NELLIE Ryan of Georgetown was passing through Almaden in the early 1900s when an illness took a toll on her short life and today, a father and daughter duo are determined to pre serve her memory with five white flowering trees.

Whilst returning to Georgetown, Nellie stopped at the Almaden Hotel where her health declined rapidly and in spite of dedicated nursing by the hotel proprietor, she died.

Marion Lawie and her father Don ald have spent many years visiting the Tablelands with a rich family heritage in Atherton and Julatten.

Marion and Donald were intrigued by the message on her headstone, with no “white-flowering tree” in sight throughout the whole of Al maden.

She was diagnosed with phthisis, a lung disease similar to tuberculous, and found herself becoming more and more weak every day on her travels.

They learned that Nellie was a 25-year-old housemaid from George town and in 1904 she fell terminally ill and began travelling back and forth to Townsville for medical help.

They continued their travel on the Savannahlander and when they reached Mount Surprise, the myste rious white-flowering tree was there waiting for them.

They hope that by planting these white trees, Nellie’s story and mem ory will forever be preserved in Al maden and surrounding communities.

They were travelling as passengers on the Savannahlander train, which passes through the sleepy town of Almaden, and decided to take a walk through the historic cemetery, where they discovered Nellie’s headstone.

A native Bauhinia, Lysiphyllum hookeri, was in full white flower in Mount Surprise’s main street, so they quickly collected the seeds and affec tionately named them “Nellies”.

Marion and Donald have sent up the “Nellies” to be planted by locals on 28 September at five landmarks in Almaden – the cemetery, the railway station, the caravan park in the old school grounds, and at the Railway Hotel with a spare tree in hand.

“The classic car club won’t come out here because the risk to their vehicles, the bike groups won’t come and people who hire cars can often not come because they can’t drive them on dirt roads.”

“There’s lot of people moving around the country right now including seniors and a lot of young people but when they find out there is a dirt road they actually get scared about driving on that,” she said.

Mr Porter has been operating a daily bus service into Mareeba for the past 18 years and his own vehicles regularly become a victim of the road’s condition.

“For example, some years ago, we had to replace three tyres because of a large pothole in the middle of the road.”

“Chillagoe has so much to offer and when tourists get here, they love it but we need to seal all of the road to increase visitation.

“I would like to know that at least the planning has been done so that when funds do become available it can be done.”

“Some say to us ‘we would love to come to Chillagoe but not on a dirt road,” Ms Wagner said.

“It puts the fear of God into them when we tell them the road is dirt”

“We have been advocating for that road to be sealed for years and we will keep advocating until it’s done.

“Many people have never even driven on a dirt road before and sometimes they don’t know how to handle corrugation and they fear what it will do to their vehicles.”

“The amount of damage to these vehicles over the years has been incredible,” he said.

Chillagoe Cabins and Tours owner Wendy Wagner says when prospective visitors discover that part of the road has not been sealed, “it puts the fear of God into them”.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui was asked why the government had failed to provide funding to get the rest of the road sealed but she did not address the question, only saying: “The delivery of these two sealed sections of highway near Chillagoe demonstrates our government’s commitment to investing in road infrastructure in our vast electorate of Cook.”

CHILLAGOE is being held back because of a failure of the State Government to seal the final few kilometres of the Burke Development Road, according to some of the town’s tourist and accommodation operators.

A Main Roads spokesperson confirmed the last 3.5km of unsealed road would remain that way “pending future funding and planning”.

years.

“We are just frustrated because Main Roads set up all the worksite and camp, bring all the machinery out here and all the workers, then why don’t they finish the job instead of having coming back to do such a small section?”

Work currently underway to seal the other two sections of the road should be completed by December. The annual average daily traffic figure for the Burke Developmental Road between Almaden and Chillagoe was recorded at 142 in 2020.

She said broken windscreens, damage to paintwork and to the undercarriage of vehicles were valid concerns of people travelling in expensive motorhomes or towing a caravan.

“As far as I know, the section they haven’t done is because they say it needs to be re-aligned and that involves Queensland Rail as well because of the crossing there,” he said.

Main Roads is currently sealing another section of the Burke Development Road between Almaden and Chillagoe but there will still be 3.5km unsealed.

“We have people calling us up and asking whether the road is sealed and when we tell them part of it is dirt, it’s off-putting to them and they decide not to come to Chillagoe,” Chillagoe Observatory and Eco Lodge owner Ian Porter said.

“We’re a proactive chamber – we made free wi fi available first and this was another project we thought would create a good vibe in the street.”

The chamber secured grants as well as spon sorships from19 businesses to fund the installation of the sound system.

The promotion started at the end of August and will run until 27 September with custom ers being able to purchase $2 donation cards at Coles stores across the state including Mareeba – they feature four unique designs created by Hummingbird House families.

MALANDA’s Chamber of Commerce has admit ted they could have consulted the community bet ter introducing the “Music in the Street” program which has drawn some criticism from locals.

“When we started our Christmas festival a cou ple of years ago, we realised people couldn’t hear what was happening – we had a PA system but the sound was an issue,” she said.

But while some like the new vibe, others are angry that the chamber of commerce did not con sult the wider community before going ahead with the project and say the music has ruined the ambi ance of the street and interferes with people using the public space.

Lead dog trainer Carly Starr PhD is excited to see the dogs make it halfway through their training and hopes they will be able to help their future owners with everyday tasks.

“Assistance dogs change people’s lives – they are a helper, a companion, an aide, a best friend and a member of their recipi ent’s family and they give them independ ence, and confidence to carry out day to day tasks.“It is amazing to finally have new pup pies into the program after covid lock downs. When we get new puppies in, they start a crucial socialisation program which exposes them to the world in which they will work as assistance dogs.”

Chamber president Jeanette Suffield has de fended the program, saying it came out of a need for an effective sound system during community events.

“Secondly, is it in the public interest for busi nesses to pay money to the chamber to enable them to broadcast advertising in public places? In public areas highly regarded by locals and tourists alike for outdoor dining no less.

“Principally, the issue is one of lack of con sultation, the complete and utter disregard of the community’s right to have their say on a scheme that directly affects them,” he wrote.

IT has been several months since the Atherton cenotaph was vandalised and its rifle sto len and now a team of histori cal experts have joined forces to replace the missing gun.

The team have removed the hand of the solider on the ceno taph to make sure the rifle fits appropriately and then plan to repaint it to the correct colour.

KAP calls for grants to help crime victims

Mr Katter said North and regional Queensland communities were overrepresented when it comes to property crime data.

“This is a small gesture to show the government is aware of the crisis situa tion in these regions, and that they shoul der at least some of the responsibility for it.”

The funding pool would be capped at $10 million a year, which would assist at least 6500 property or business own ers who wished to take up the dollar-fordollar incentive.

Internationally renowned sculptor Tom Tischler with the replica rifle he made for the Atherton Cenotaph.

Under the KAP proposal, the annual round of grants, which would be open to property and business owners, would provide a “dollar-for-dollar” contribu tion up to $1500 for those who invest in security measures such as CCTV camer as, alarms, bollards and bars and security screen installation.

Local historical archae ologist Gordon Grimwade is leading the project with worldrenowned sculpture Tom Tischler to create an 80 per cent replica of a Linfield rifle 303 – which was commonly used in World War I.

As the cenotaph is heritage listed, the replica must be an exact historical replica and Mr Grimwade has ensured the rifle has been crafted to perfection.

KAP Leader Robbie Katter has called on the Palaszczuk Government to offer $1500 security grants to Queenslanders affected by crime in communities that have a property offence crime rate that is more than double the State average.

The Express, Wednesday, September 14, 2022 PAGE 7www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Experts step up to replace cenotaph rifle

Mr Katter said the move, which would apply across crime-riddled com munities like Mareeba, Cairns, Towns ville and Mount Isa, would demonstrate to the State Government that there was a cost for their inaction on effectively spi ralling crime rates.

“We are very fortunate to have internationally renowned sculpturer Mr Tischler with us to create this rifle.

Mr Katter said the State average for offences against property was 373.48 per 100,000 ERP (estimated resident popu lation), and there were currently 18 po lice districts across Queensland that had a crime rate (for offences against proper ty) that is more than double this average.

“I am annoyed that some one has decided to vandalise the cenotaph but on the other hand I am glad to be involved in this project,” Mr Grimwade said.

GRANTS of $1500 to help victims of crime in communities such as Mareeba have been proposed by Katter’s Austral ian Party.

“These grants would of course just be a short-term solution, and to ensure crime is eventually controlled, the KAP will continue to call on the government to make some real changes, such as supporting our Relocation Sentencing Policy for recidivist youth offenders,” he said.

“This crime wave doesn’t discrimi nate, people have packed up their bags and left towns, as well as businesses who are under siege already have, or are prepared to, shut up shop as a result of crime, and this is a crying shame in every instance,” Mr Katter said.

He said he has “mixed feel ings” about the project but feels honoured to be working on such a unique cenotaph.

Regional Plan to be reviewed

Deputy Premier and Minister for Planning Steven Miles said much had happened since the Far North Queensland Regional Plan 2009-2031 was implemented.

“We replaced the roof in 2020 at a cost of $52,000 and recently installed a new sound system, with overhead projectors and audio visuals, costing about $22,000,” she said.

Atherton Parish Catholic Ladies treasurer Josie Raso gives $10,000 to Father Mathew Kochuveettil for the Restoration Appeal. The money was raised from old-fashioned catering, cake stalls and lamingtons.

“The pioneers of Atherton Tablelands built this magnificent St Joseph’s Church 90 years ago,” fundraising committee chair Annette Seawright said.

“Updating the regional plan to reflect the latest forecasts is crucial to provide the basis for identifying improved op-

“This informs important levers such as the planning and delivery of infrastructure and services, and connections across council areas.”

In Far North Queensland, the updated plan will be developed in conjunction with the Far North Queensland Regional Infrastructure Plan, that will be underpinned by a regional economic strategy to consider and prioritise significant infrastructure needs.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the government had listened to local governments, stakeholders and the community.

“By involving the councils, community and industry in updating the plan, we will be bringing the Far North closer

“Steps must be taken now to repair and repaint the exterior and interior of the church.

Mr Miles said Regional Infrastructure Plans reflect a place-based approach to better align regional infrastructure with regional priorities, recognising the important role infrastructure plays in catalysing regional economic recovery, resilience, growth and liveability.

“Major renovations are needed so it is our turn now. In a one off – for the first time in 90 years – a restoration appeal has been introduced, running for the four weeks of September.

While it is yet to receive quotes for the work, the estimated cost of the repairs is expected to exhaust all the church’s funds, so it has launched a restoration appeal for the month of September, hoping parishioners and other members of the public will donate to get the repairs done.

“Through a new Far North Queensland Regional Plan, we will be able to address issues that are specific to the region.

Mr Miles said good planning would deliver more jobs in more industries, better services and protected the Queensland lifestyle.

“Mayors, councils and councillors, as well as various advocacy bodies in Far North Queensland have requested a review of the FNQ Regional Plan as a priority,” he said.

The Atherton Parish Catholic Ladies group has already contributed $10,000 to the appeal from money they have raised through cake stalls.

“We have listened to those requests and are moving forward for the benefit of Far North Queensland communities.

THE Far North Queensland Regional Plan is set to be updated to reflect the fast growth being experienced in the region.

“Reviewing and updating the Regional Plan is vitally important for the local councils and our communities as we plan for future growth.

Mrs Seawright said anyone who donated to the appeal would be recognised on an Honour Board which will be permanently displayed in the foyer of the church. There are five levels of sponsorship available.

“Our region has gone through enormous change since the current Regional Plan was implemented 13 years ago,” he said.

“Regional plans set the long-term direction for how our regions will grow and respond to change over time,” he said.

Queensland Health Plan We're expanding Townsville Hospital, and creating a new Mental Health Unit for Cairns Hospitalmeaning better healthcare for North Queensland.

Our Australian cuckoos do mostly lay eggs in other bird’s nests, each species having its own set of target species.

One species, well-known in cane-growing areas, is the Pheasant Coucal and it is now thought to be a genuine member of the cuckoo family, despite the fact that it builds its own nest and raises its own young.

Keep a list of all property with a serial number, model number and specific features, and keep the list in a safe place.

Wonders

All 12 Australian cuckoo species occur in our region of northeastern Queensland and many are at least partially migratory. The largest is the Channel-billed Cuckoo, so-called because of the distinct groove that runs along the huge upper mandible (bill).

Unlike many cuckoos, the Channel-billed Cuckoo hatchlings do not kill or eject the other young in the nest, but rather simply dominate the feeding so that the young of their hosts die of starvation.

For the Channel-billed Cuckoo in our area that will usually mean Torresian Crows or Pied Currawongs. Even though crows are known to be very smart birds, a pair of Channel-billed Cuckoos will often succeed in fooling them.

RECORDING and identifying your property not only helps you, it greatly assists police to return stolen or lost and found property back to its rightful owner.

While this is happening, the female cuckoo will slip into the nest and lay an egg. Several eggs can be laid in the same host bird’s nest, perhaps by different females.

These big birds look a bit like a flying cross as they pass by at height, and many call as they do so. Once they arrive the cuckoos pair up and start looking for their host species.

There is however a small population that seems to overwinter in the gorges of Boodjamulla National Park where rock figs continue to provide food through the winter. This leaves us with a slight puzzle – is this species an Indonesian bird that migrates to Australia to breed?Orperhaps an Australian bird that likes to travel to Indonesia for our winter – a bit like many other Australians. In the end it is both!

It is often difficult to trace ownership due to limited details being provided at the time of reporting or the items never being reported as stolen.

CUCKOOS are well-known and fascinating birds found across the world. The English name itself is derived from the scientific name of the common European cuckoo which is based on its call – kukku. But none of the Australian cuckoos make that sound! However, I expect many Australians know the name, and the call, by exposure to European culture, including the famous Cuckoo-clocks of Germany in which a bird figure pops out of a wall clock on the hour to sing its name - kukku.

Cuckoos are also well-known because of their interesting habit of laying their eggs in the nests of other species of birds and thereby having their young raised for them by other species! This practice, called brood parasitism, is common to most cuckoos.

Once fledged, the host parents continue feeding the loud-calling cuckoos for several weeks, usually struggling to keep up with demands. Another interesting observation is that although raised entirely by a different species, the juvenile cuckoos will often flock up with others and then migrate together in small groups.

Channel-billed Cuckoos are the world’s largest cuckoos and feed mainly on fruit, particularly figs. They occur as far west as Sulawesi in Indonesia where the population is resident (non-migratory), but in Australia almost all our birds migrate each year.

Such negative predictions served only to motivate the couple however and Jamie said it was “challenge accepted”.

“The green of the Tablelands spoke to me and I can't imagine ever wanting to leave here,” she said.

Local organic market farmers Jamie and Annie Ah Gee of Ah Gee Farm near Lake Eacham have become the only growers to produce the plant in tropical North Queensland and have been fielding enquiries from buyers as far afield as Singapore and Hong Kong.

BY SALLY TURLEY

“We started growing wasabi during the 18 months we spent near Kuranda, while we were searching for the right property to buy,” Jamie said.“Two years ago, we bought 3.25ha of rich red soil bordered by a permanent creek and thick rainforest outside of Malanda – an absolute sanctuary.

“Those jobs are okay if you have no family, but it’s hard to do both well.”

"We use regenerative farming practices, favouring exclusion methods and biological controls over pest extermination,” Annie said.

Ah Gee that's great wasabi

Jamie and Annie's wasabi journey began 7-8 years ago when they were told wasabi seeds were impossible to source and even if they could find seeds, the crop was impossible to grow.

“I go out to check on the vegetables in the morning and just get lost in the garden for hours.

Annie's background, growing up with her parents' newsagency and book store in Broken Hill, in the far west of New South Wales, made farming a completely new experience for her.

pose and recycle wherever possible throughout the farm.

“Through deep mulching techniques, we have reduced our water usage by 90 per cent.

“I have always been associated with food and if we can just keep the scrub turkeys, bandicoots and grasshoppers off the wasabi plants, there is potentially a massive financial upside to this venture,” he said.

Annie and Jamie Ah Gee have achieved “the wasabimanagingimpossible”togrowsuccessfully for the North Queensland market and have found the perfect balance between business and family in their regenerative farm near Lake Eacham.

“As a chef, I was aware that while everyone had heard of wasabi and probably thought they

CONSIDERED by most experts to be the most difficult plant in the world to grow commercially, it stands to reason that wasabi (Wasabia japonica), should also be one of the most expensive, legally cultivated plants on the planet to buy.

“Each plant produces around 1-1.5kg of edible rhizomes and the whole plant is usable, so we are also able to sell the leaves for $1 each,” he said.

In fact, it is estimated that only 5 per cent of the wasabi served in Japanese restaurants around the world comes from the actual plant.

These days, their lives are filled with planting and pruning, picking and packing produce to fill orders for customers for local supermarkets, Tablelands and Cairns restaurants and local distributors like Tablelands to Tabletop.

had eaten it on sushi, most people have never tried the real thing,” he said.

“Our life here is a far cry from our hectic former existence. I worked for years as a chef in high end restaurants, hotels and cafes and Annie was working in the demanding environment of the sales world.

The heat and flavour of the wasabi rhizome, lasts for only 10 to 15 minutes. For the genuine experience, a grater is sent to patrons' tables with a fresh wasabi root and the patron has the experience of grating their own.

Jamie grew up on his family vineyard in country Victoria and though he did not follow the vintner path, he was growing small crops between the grape vines.

“While we are best known for our wasabi, we also grow a range of herbs, leafy greens and edible flowers which we sell within a 50km radius to ensure freshness and keep our food miles down.

“Our business is totally demand-driven. We have quite a bit of room to expand here, but we don't want to create an oversupply of product. We plan to just grow along with our market.”

“We don't even use approved organic chemicals on our food crops. We re-use, repur-

“We chill and cryovac the rhizomes and deliver them as quickly as possible as there is only a six-hour window before the plant deteriorates beyond use.”

Jamie said Australian restaurants were happy just to be able to source the product and though it was hard to establish the plants and they took years to reach maturity in our climate, their sale price of $300 - $400/kg made it worth the effort.

Ms Thomson said the larger hazard reduction burn offered a perfect opportunity to complete practical basic training assessments of some keen new volunteers of Wonga Beach Rural Fire Brigade.

Ms Erakovic has a Bachelor Degree in Science and she also owned and operated two small businesses early in her career.

A LARGE hazard reduction burn conducted on 115 hectares off the Clohesy River Road recently has provided some comfort for landholders with the fire season on our doorstep.

“We have developed the eHub to share the outcomes of this work, including regular video and results updates from demonstration sites, event information, moth activities, insecticide resistance results, and to allow growers to engage in discussion.”Formoreinformation, go to menthub.com.au/fallarmywormwww.daf.engage-

Ms Erakovic will commence her new position from 17 November 2022.

ABGC Chair Stephen Lowe welcomed the appointment and said he had no doubt Ms Erakovic was well equipped to advocate and represent industry, ensuring the long-term sustainability for all growers and the wider industry.

Speewah Rural Fire Brigade’s Yvonne Thomson said approximately 115 hectares of land off Clohesy River Road was deemed a wildfire hazard and planning began in June to alleviate the problem.

“Unfortunately, the constant rain in the beginning of the year produced a heavy amount of grass and allowed the ground to become waterlogged and cold and earlier work could not eventuate,” sheLandholderssaid. offered to clear breaks to provide access and safety for brigade vehicles. The area was mapped and divided into sections which would be controlled by Sector Commanders in a mosaic pattern which would slow the fire and make areas safe, from which other sections could be burnt.

Ms Erakovic (pictured) has been with the ABGC for the past six years, in the role of executive officer.

“We had a very strong field of highly experienced applicants to choose from and Leanne is an outstanding choice for this role,” Mr Lowe said.

Ms Erakovic has more than two decades of experience in management and business development, previously holding sen-

“Operation Mustang” involved 13 “appliances” and 42 volunteers from seven fire brigades to complete the job over two days.

“Over the past six years, I have been an active advocate for banana growers in my role as executive officer and I look forward to continuing this close relationship with members and industry at large.”

“Ms Erakovic brings a wealth of experience from both working with the ABGC for the past six years and her business background. We are confident she has the expertise and vision to lead the ABGC and the banana industry into the future.”

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said since the exotic plant pest arrived in the far northern regions of Australia in early 2020, it had spread across much of the south, west and east of the country.

CHERIE Bramich's equine dentistry services are in big demand.

“Horsemanship skills, the ability to read horses and a calm and confident manner are very important in this job.

Ms Bramich said in an ideal situation, owners should introduce their youngsters to dental checks at around 12 months when they start losing their baby teeth.

Equine dentist Cherie Bramich is one of just three practitioners operating north of Townsville.

“Their horse may still be in good condition, but there are many signs to alert owners to existing or developing problems,” Ms Bramich said.

“I worked as a custodial prison officer for years in Mareeba, Townsville and various locations down to the Gold Coast, doing sentence management, transfer and parole.

“My clients own a mix of competitive, work and leisure horses, but by working together as an industry and keeping it local, we can raise our level of horse health awareness, which will benefit everyone.”

Ms Bramich inspects a horse’s teeth which are critical for the overall wellbeing of the animal.

their gums and jawbones, causing severe pain. Long incisors can cause chewing problems and sharp points on the inner and outer edges of the cheek teeth can create painful lacerations and ulcers.

She believes there is a big need for education around horse health.

The Cert IV in Equine Dentistry graduate said dental issues were not always obvious to owners.

“Many horse owners are spending a lot of money on good quality feed for their animals, but the best nutrition in the world won't help if their horses can't chew and digest their feed.”.

ON LANDthe

Clients north to Cooktown, west to Croydon and all over the Tablelands, are discovering the benefits of including their horses in Cherie's progressive dental health program.

The most obvious sign of dental trouble is a change in chewing habits. The horse may dribble or drop feed out of its mouth while eating, roll feed into balls rather than chewing and drop it on the ground (quidding) or wash their feed in their water container.

Some hold their head to the side when eating, refuse to eat hard grain or begin swallowing their food before chewing is complete which can lead to life threatening colic from impacted food.

The former human dental assistant is one of just three equine dental practitioners operating north of Townsville, and is passionate about helping horses and their owners.

“The more knowledge you get the more you can share and knowledge costs nothing to carry with you and share with others.

“I enjoyed the work and got to ‘see some stuff’' but once I had my son Bryce, I wanted to move back home.

Ms Bramich says because humans have taken horses out of their natural (wild), semi-arid environment, enclosed them in paddocks and fed them with softer, improved pastures and/or processed feeds (hay and grain) that don’t require much mastication, it reduces natural wear on their teeth.

“I grew up with horses at Herberton and have always loved them. I was into barrel racing and am keen to get involved in camp drafting and the obstacle-based Extreme Cowboy Racing.

“We have a lot of knowledgeable horse therapists up here now and a lot of horse owners and the more we can share that knowledge around, the better,” Ms Bramich said.

These problems often translate into behavioural issues such as tossing their head or pulling to one side when being ridden, gaping or chomping the bit, increased resistance to the bridle, nervousness and even rearing or pig rooting with riders.

“As a member of their association, I can access advice from practitioners in Switzerland, the United States and Germany.

We can stop them taking our freedom, but, as I keep saying, it relies on those of us that know these truths to wake up those that are still oblivious to them – and for us all to unite in voting the ALP, LNP, and Greens out permanently and ensuring control-freak anti-capitalists never again get into office.

We now live under a fascist/corporatist dictatorial regime, as the Covid era made obvious to everyone. Corporations en forced medical diktats that governments could not because of Section 51(xxiiiA) of ourFascism/corporatismConstitution. is not, as some say, “the dying gasp of capitalism”. It’s what happens when governments and cor porations subvert capitalism and force a society onto the road to socialism. From there it’s ultimately on to communism, full central command, and inevitable and una voidable complete economic collapse.

WE are in some serious trouble people!

I WISH to convey my sincere thanks to the medical team at Atherton Hospital who took care of me in early August, namely Dr Craig Fairley, Registered Nurses Beta and Emma in Accident and Emergency area and the Medical Wing staff.

I reckon the Liberals will be wringing their hands again, thinking of the next three or four terms they will surely get after this new Labor thoughtless debacle.

Responses were mixed when The Express asked whether car registration stickers should make a comeback given a lot of people forget to pay their rego now there is no sticker to remind them….

With crims cloning number plates the return of labels might be a good option.

– Darren Alston

Miss the stickers. Don’t need them as a reminder however they were one less thing we needed our phones for. I would love to see them make a comeback as I know many people who are not good with technology still do need them as a reminder (my mother for one).

– Kim Cahalane

Every freaking single western govern ment from Germany to England, from Australia to New Zealand are being run by idiots.

Thank you to hospital

China has over 2,500,000 troops. New Zealand has a few sheep dogs.

And last, but not least, the beautiful meals I enjoyed thrice daily from the kitch en staff.

Our children and grandchildren are de pending on us.

– Debbie Moore

While our government and corporate sub-elites think their wilful compliance with the globalists’ agenda is their ticket to wealth and safety, it’s not. In selling out their own countrymen they have dem onstrated they cannot be trusted. History shows that new despotic regimes delete such traitors first.

It is time.

Because, if someone doesn’t wake the hell up in Government very soon, we are going to be extinguished like a cockroach under your boot!

Yes, definitely will help with remembering to pay and also for car theft – so easy to change number plates now.

If we had trained people in the first place in the proper way this would not be happening. And what’s more we haven’t enough housing, we are short of fresh wa ter due to dams not being built, we have droughts that cannot be controlled and so much more.

– Lyn Fletcher

It is Timetime.toput an adult in charge.

Hell, even if it’s a month, just think how crazy this is?

I can remember the home insulation mess where we lost young men from elec trocution, new school buildings built for schools that were closing, just to mention two, but surely that is enough to make us realise that their latest migration policy to fill jobs will be a disaster.

Wake the hell up and redirect every sin gle policy that is killing us with wokeness!!

We are destroying our energy sec tor, in every single Western country. The green new deal is actually a Marxist plan designed to make every country willingly convert to renewable energy without a back-up plan.

Yes, bring back rego stickers! They are great at reminding you when your rego is due! They are also very informative, if you spot a car type you may like and want to know the particulars.

China, meanwhile, is building a coalfired power station every single week or two.

Most of us have mobile phones. Set up a reminder to pay it say like a week before. I knew plenty of people who had sticker and still forgot to pay it.

The boys played hard and fast in July for the Cup, which was held in Townsville, go ing head-to-head with some of the best play ers across North Queensland.

At only 15 years old, Asha Lynch-Simmons will be the only player from the Tablelands representing Queensland in the 2022 Netball Queensland Nissan State Titles.

NEXT year, 22 of Mareeba’s finest gym nasts will travel 14,794 km across the seas for their first ever international event and are calling on the community to help get them there.

“We went down for the Brisbane compe tition in 2021 where we performed a series of displays and came second, but little did we know we qualified for World Gymnaes trada,” she said.

Gymnastics mum Beth Fleming has set up a GoFundMe on behalf of the team in hopes the meet their target of $10,000 before they depart in August next year.

“My brothers were very into basketball, and so was my dad, and I watched them play ever since I was little, but I knew that I didn’t want to play basketball,” Asha said.

The competition will kick off on Sunday 18 September at the Nissan Arena, home to the Queensland Firebirds team, with Asha full of ex citement, determination and nerves as she heads to the southeast corner.

“I want to get even fitter and step up my healthy eat ing and the more focussed I am the more energy I seem to have.

Coaching director Kelly Tulloch was in shock when she found out her team had qualified and is ready to take her team to the next level.

Mareeba gymnasts Dayna Pearce, Frank Tulloch, Kip Fealy (on shoulders), Andrew Hawthron, Emma Hawthron, Ryan Pearce (kneeling), Lexi Fealy (doing splits) and Lizzy MacLaughlin (hand standing) are heading to Amsterdam next year.

The team from Granite Engineering and Manufacturing (back) designed and donated trophies to the Mareeba Junior Rugby League U10’s team to recognise their efforts at the Gorden Tallis Cup.

World Gymnaestrada Amsterdam is held every four years and is one of the largest non-competitive gymnastics events in the world.Alongside 627 other affiliated clubs in Australia, Mareeba gymnasts are hoping to put Mareeba on the map whilst proudly rep resenting the green and gold colours.

Asha’s has strategically planned out her next steps to become a greater netball player, hoping she can con tinue to be role model for other players in the region.

“It isn’t competitive, and it is essentially a series of artistic movements on a large floor as well as tramp and track apparatuses.”

“It is about $7,000 per gymnast and we have about 22 of us going and the club is not funding any of that. Individual athletes have to fundraise themselves and that’s why we have a GoFundMe page set up,” Ms Tulloch said.

Gymnasts have been preparing for the big event next year, including level 7 gym nast Andrew Hawthorne.

FIERCE and dedicated, Atherton netball prodigy Asha Lynch-Simmons will be the only woman from the Tablelands representing North Queensland in the 2022 Netball Queensland Nissan State Titles.

“This is the second year we have gotten involved, and we do it all for the betterment of the community,” he said.

“It makes the bits feel good about their achievements and they have it as a memory.”

“My mum was pretty happy as she was a netball er too – she played in the Australian Championships when she was younger, and she has been my coach ever since. My mum’s cousin was an Australian Diamond and I want to play for Australia too one day.”

Determined to do her absolute best, the 15-yearold travels to Cairns from her home in Atherton up to four times a week to receive a high level of training to prepare her for each compe tition.

Playing in the Under 16’s Northern Rays team, this competition is one of the most important in a young netball player’s career.

“This is the first time we have ever been to any event like this, so it is all very new to us.

The highly trained gymnast said he was excited to head overseas for the first ever and to doing it alongside an incredible team.

“This is the second year Granites has do nated these trophies and they have been su per supportive of rugby league in Mareeba.

In order to make it to Amsterdam, the gym have been fundraising to support all 22 of their gymnasts.

“We won’t only be representing Mareeba gymnastics; we will be representing Aussie Gymnastics in green and gold.”

“I want to be a good role model for others and rep resent Atherton Tablelands well too and one day I want to play for the Queensland Firebirds and then represent Australia at the international level. I would also like to go to university and become a physiotherapist.”

“I found out we qualified the day after we did the display event in Brisbane and it was a pretty cool feeling to hear we are going to compete in an international event,” he said.

Mareeba Junior Rugby League extends their thanks to the ongoing support of Gran ite Engineering and Manufacturing.

She has always been in love with netball, taking up the sport at age eight when

“When my grade two teacher Mrs Constant started ‘Net Set Go’ at school I was hooked, and I have loved it ever since then.

Through this competi tion, Asha will hit a tran sitioning point from asso ciation based netball (State Age and Northern Netball League) into broader region al representation such as the Ruby and Sapphire Series Competitions.

“My next steps are to become more versatile on the court and play other po sitions outside of circle de fence,” she said.

“My young fella is involved in it this year as well and sports is really important in creat ing lifelong friendships and building fitness and other skills, so we had to get onboard.”

“They play eight games in the none-scor ing competition and the boys played really well,” he said.

Asha is no stranger to the limelight, with this being her third state championship this year representing North Queensland at the Queens land School Sport Champi onships in May and playing representative level for the Cairns Pythons.

Coach Greg Brown said the boys played incredibly and the donation of trophies will

be a great memory for them.

Granite Engineering and Manufacturing Manger Troy Gulliver said the idea behind the trophies was to be like a football and to

have each of the kids’ names engraved into them.

The Atherton local began playing cricket in his hometown competition in before it was affiliated with the Cairns competition, playing in sparse games with no real organisation.

A team of dedicated cricket stars from Atherton High have represented their region with pride at the Queensland Conference final in Mackay.

The team rallied and wickets began flowing again, with Rockhampton Grammar posting a total of 122 to win.

“There was not much organised cricket back then I just played when ever I could – I don’t even know why I got into it I’ve just liked it for as much as I can remember,” he said.

A TEAM of determined young Atherton High School senior girls have taken out the Northern Queensland Conference final in Mackay, led by their captain and young cricket star Amy Hunter.

ATHERTON is gearing up for a highly competitive cricket season as their A grade side rebuilds and attempts to make a semi-final appearance with new coach and veteran player Shane Legge at the helm.

Legge was on the cusp of playing a visiting West Indies team around 1991 when he was 12th man in a Queens land side, a time when the West Indies were regarded as one of the best and most feared teams in the world.

As the rain began to close in, so did the Atherton High ladies.
