URTHER post-election change has swept through the Tablelands Regional Council, with CEO Ian Church moving on from his post via mutual consent. In an open statement to TRC ratepayers, Mayor Joe Paronella said that Mr Church’s duties concluded last Friday afternoon, with Deputy CEO Matthew Hyde filling in until a permanent replacement is found. “At the recent election, the community gave Council a mandate for a new era of local governance,” he said. “Please know that I, along with your new Council, am committed to ensuring we deliver just that. I have already let every Council employee know that I will continue to draw on their considerable expertise and strengths. “Their insight and knowledge will enable us to create even greater value for all our Tablelands communities, and help deliver even more innovative and efficient services for us all. “I am particularly proud of the people

who work for you, and I have thanked them for their significant efforts to deliver quality services over the past few years, despite the tumultuous period that has confronted us all. “We will be starting a national recruitment drive over the coming weeks and are hopeful that by September, we will be in a position to appoint a new CEO. “We are looking for someone who understands rural and regional communities, has a strong business and customer service focus and, most importantly, demonstrates positive and inspirational leadership for both Council, and the communities we have the privilege to serve. “Setting a new strategic vision for our organisation and our region is something we will do in collaboration with our new CEO, along with everyone who works with us. Most importantly it must be driven by the wants and needs of the people in our communities.” Mr Church’s career in local government began in 1995. Over this period, he has been involved with a variety of economic, community and social integration responsibility during his tenure.

Suncorp raises the beef industry profile A combined fundraising effort by the Atherton and Mareeba Suncorp Bank branches has helped a small local community organisation with a generous donation. The Tableland Stud Cattle Show and Sale Inc. (TSCSS) was established earlier this year to assist the promotion of stud cattle and to encourage younger people to become involved in the beef industry. An amazing $1300 was raised by the Atherton and Mareeba branches, with combined funds from a successful Easter egg raffle and sausage sizzle.

Branch manager Sherryn Rendall and business service officer Jonathan Bell presented a cheque to TSCSS President Charleene Pedersen and Secretary Kathleen Carson. Ms Rendall said it was fantastic to support the community and was overwhelmed with the generosity of the local people. Funds raised will assist the TSCSS committee to hold the first all breeds stud cattle show and sale at the Malanda Showground in late August. The show and sale will give local stud cattle breeders a chance to showcase and sell their seed stock.

There will be led and unled sections at the show, which will allow ample opportunity for visitors to view a multitude of breeds. The sale will be a helmsman bid system. The TSCSS hope to encourage local school students to participate in junior handling competitions, and to also apply for the position of associate judge. President Charleene Pedersen said that the TSCSS committee were very grateful for the donation from Suncorp, and looked forward to seeing everyone at the show and sale later in the year.

DEDICATED Mareeba dancer Rowena Petersen has been selected for the highly prestigious Creative Generations (CGEN) State Schools Onstage 2016 event as a feature dancer. Held on July 15 and 16 (Friday and Saturday) at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Rowena earned the highly coveted spot after successfully auditioning amongst 200 other dancers. Rowena is the only dancer from FNQ who succeeded in becoming a feature dancer, with the overwhelming majority hailing from the south east corner of Qld. Across the show, she will complete 10 different genres of dance, along with a number of dress changes. “For me, when you do the different genres for a very long time, they just come naturally,” she said. Currently in Year 11 at school, Rowena has a delicate daily balance. Along with training and performing, she needs to ensure her schoolwork is

up to date. As the CGEN competition is school-based, her situation is understood by Mareeba State High School staff, who ensure she remains on track. “With rehearsals for CGEN, I’ve noticed I’ve already improved in terms of dance steps. I think the process also builds confidence. “When we rehearse, it is usually for four hours – so you just keep going and going. It’s definitely challenging, but that’s just how it is.” Rowena added: “When I was auditioning, there were so many kids in the room. We learnt the dances and then two minutes later, had to perform them in front of the judges. “You had a little bit of time to go over them, but it’s just so quick and you have to give the judges all that you had.” If you are interested in attending CGEN State Schools Onstage 2016 and cheering on Rowena in July, tickets can be purchased via: http://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show. aspx?sh=CREATIVE16&v=CVN

Petitions surface for disgruntled voters RESIDENTS across the Far North have been inundated with local, state and federal politics issues over the past two years. The latest issue surfaced only a fortnight ago, when the Palaszczuk Government successfully passed a controversial amendment without any public consultation. Tabled by State Attorney General Yvette D’Ath, the amendment (which was added to the Electoral (Improving Representation) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill) means that from 2018, preferential voting is no longer optional. In the days after the announcement, a new

website – www.myvoicematters.org.au – has been set up for voters to sign an online petition, should they be unhappy with the decision which was passed by all members of the Palaszczuk Government and independent crossbenchers. Shadow Attorney General Ian Walker said: “This petition gives Queenslanders their voice back. “We need to tell Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Labor Government to honour their election commitments, scrap their sneaky plan and bring back choice at the ballot box. “Every Queenslander deserves to be heard

and now they can tell the Premier that ‘My Voice Matters’.” Locally, former Palmer United candidate for Barron River Andrew Schebella has launched a petition of his own, of which he intends to present to the Federal Senate. Mr Schebella said that both businesses and members of the community receive nowhere near the same level of benefits that Federal politicians and their family members receive. Mr Schebella’s petition intends to: 1) Abolish free business class travel for family members of Federal politicians

2) Amend Federal MP’s travel allowance, so they do not receive an allowance if staying in a family member’s residence 3) Force politicians to pay for all expenses 4) Make the Administrative Appeals Tribunal & Remuneration Tribunal panel members include a minimum of 50 per cent from the private sector to get a real view on salary and entitlements. If you are interested in filling out Mr Schebella’s petition, please visit: https://www.gopetition. com/petitions/federal-politicians-lead-by-example-abolish-entitlements-live-like-the-rest-of-us.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and fellow councillors are committed to beautifying streets across the MSC in the next four years.

The ‘Beautification’ of Mareeba By Justin Fris MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Tom Gilmore is determined for his council to beautify streets throughout the Shire. Speaking at last Wednesday afternoon’s Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Mayor Gilmore said he was hopeful that streets across the MSC could sport leafy, tranquil hues. “I would like to spend the next four years doing something about the beautification of our town,” he said. “Some of you are old enough to remember the fig trees that used to line the main street of Mareeba. “They were magnificent trees. I would like to think that as a council, we might be able to do something about returning our streets – and I’m not just talking about the main street – but our streets in Dimbulah, Chillagoe and Mareeba in particular. “Returning them back to something that is green and attractive – where there is shade for people to sit under.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president

Joe Moro agreed with Mayor Gilmore’s comments and believed that a more attractive environment could increase economic development in the region. “The reason the Chamber supports Council on beautification is because it is good for the economy,” he said. “If the town looks beautiful, if the town looks nice, not only will people come here and spend money in the shops, they will enjoy coming to Mareeba and it will be great for investment.” Mayor Gilmore also updated the business community about several of the Shire’s projects (Mareeba Aerodrome, Mareeba Industrial Park, Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant) and how they were progressing. “In terms of the Mareeba Shire, this is an exciting time to be here,” he said. “The role of council and the role of government are to provide conditions in which private enterprise can thrive. “Put together the underlying fabric of social necessities that then brings the potential for private enterprise to bring their innovation,

new ideas and investment.” The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has been working diligently with the MSC and several local organisations in the revitalisation of the Bicentennial Lakes precinct. A tremendously untapped resource in our town – Bicentennial Lakes typically sits idle – and Mayor Gilmore is determined for this to change. “The Bendigo Community Bank, Mareeba Lions, Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce were all involved in the idea of turning Basalt Gully (Bicentennial Lakes) into a real central feature of this community,” he said. “I visualise this precinct as an entertainment precinct. There are opportunities there for us in terms of lighting. “It just seems to me that there are opportunities there that have been languishing for years. They need to be revitalised – and with the Chamber and others – we can work together towards building a precinct that the community will actually go to.” “I want people in there and I want them to enjoy it.”

Newlands awarded coveted academic medal in Queensland last Wednesday. Newlands was awarded the Thomas Joseph FORMER Mareeba State High School (MSHS) (T.J) Ryan memorial medal and scholarship, student Carla Newlands received the most cov- due to her outstanding all round effort as a eted secondary schooling academic achievement secondary student. The award also includes a scholarship to support tertiary studies valued at $10,000. Only 10 TJ Ryan medals are offered annually, with each high school only allowed to nominate one student. Not only was Carla crowned ‘MSHS 2015 School Dux’, she also had the rare achievement of topping the class in every single Year 12 subject she studied. MSHS gifted and talented co-ordinator Christina Ellacott said Carla was a worthy winner of the award, given her modesty and tenacious work ethic. The application process was extremely lengthy. It required Ms Ellacott to sit down with Carla and ensure that she met all requirements for the award. “The Principal has to approve the nomP: 4095 5383 • E: shop@texgun.com.au ination firstly,” she said. community, leadership and sporting records. “She couldn’t have achieved all of these things without the opportunities given to her at the school,” she said. “Carla is one of those kids who took advantage of every single opportunity along the way.” Along with her academic talent, 2015 saw Carla represent her state in swimming, along with raising money for various charities. “She’s an all-rounder,” Ms Ellacott said. “She’s a leader – she’s an academic, a sportswoman – in every area, just a lovely kid.” But with such success comes a price. While other students may have had other things on their minds, Carla would always put her

studies first. Ms Ellacott added that Carla even avoided social media during her final year of high school. “You would never say that she did all effortlessly – she did have to work very hard,” she said. “She had to be very self-disciplined. “She wasn’t even on Facebook. But she always completed everything with good humour, manners and grace.” Ms Ellacott added: “This award is very much a community thing. It’s all about all the people in the community who have helped her along the way, having supportive parents and the right student who is able to give it their best.” Carla is currently studying in Brisbane.

ASDOGS volunteers Bill Brown, ‘Buddy’, Linda Brown, Sandra Hammond, ‘Sharni’ (5 months old), Claire Marson and Helen Holt are keen for more residents across the Tablelands to become involved with their team.

ASDOGS need your help By Justin Fris ASSOCIATION of Australian Assistance Dogs NQ (ASDOGS) volunteers are committed to assisting those in the community who need it. Through hours of dedicated training, ASDOGS volunteers train dogs in a bid for them to assist members of the community who have a physical disability. These dogs are not merely companions – they can assist disabled residents with opening and closing doors, turning on and off lights – and can even assist with dressing and undressing. Last Thursday saw several ASDOGS volunteers spend time outside Cornetts IGA in Mareeba, where they

spent time chatting with locals about their role in the community. ASDOGS representative Claire Marson said the shopping centre visits across the region were a bid to engage with all sectors of the community and maintain their presence in the community. “(The promotional visits) It’s just a refresh for the community,” she said. “Letting the community know about what we do and giving the community an opportunity to assist us if they wish.” If you are interested in joining the ASDOGS team as either a volunteer (for example, puppy boarder) or assist with one of their many community projects, please contact ASDOGS on 4092 3344.

EXCITEMENT is building daily for members of the Atherton State School community, who will celebrate their 125th anniversary on Saturday, May 28. Last Thursday morning saw current school leaders hoist a seasoned time capsule from the turf – amid intrigue and amazement from all around. Deputy Principal Kylie Jones said the capsule was opened every quarter of a century, albeit with specific guidelines. “The capsule was last put down during the centenary year (1990),” she said. “In the coming weeks, we will be contacting recipients who have put items in the capsule and wish to view them. “However, there are certain items within the capsule that are not allowed to be opened until 2084 – and these items have been put aside and marked accordingly.” Planning for the 125th anniversary has been in the pipeline for several months. The sheer level of detail and preparation is nothing short of inspirational. “The anniversary celebrations will begin at the old school site on Mabel Street at 12pm,” Ms Jones said. “There will be an official walkthrough of the old school grounds, but due to the current nature of the site, we will only be able to walk through the gardens. “At 12.40pm, there will be an official reenactment of the first walk in 1984 from the old school site to our current site on Armstrong Street.

DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

Consultation on bus shelter What’s the ADVERTORIAL

“value” in Wylandra Estate?

Wylandra Estate’s new stage ‘Hoevet Field’ is better than before: • Asphalt rather than bitumen • Underground power • Tree-scaped streets • Great pre-sale bargains*

By Justin Fris DIVISION 5 Tablelands Regional Councillor Katrina Spies showed a perfect example of transparent and effective local governance last Thursday morning. At the February 14 meeting, the TRC was successful in attaining $35,000 of funding, which in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) would either see the construction of a new bus shelter in Atherton, or a major upgrade of the current shelter on Main Street. Excluding Mayor Joe Paronella (who declared a personal conflict of interest), councillors voted unanimously in favour of upgrading the current site, due to significant safety and lighting reasons. But after being informed of the decision, business owners in the vicinity of the shelter were miffed, as they believed there wasn’t enough public consultation from major stakeholders. Interim TRC CEO Matthew Hyde apologised to the councillors and said the provided report was a ‘rush job’, due to the limited timeframe available for council officers. He added that a subsequent report would be handed down at

a future council meeting, with further public consultation information included within the document. As soon as Cr Spies was contacted about these concerns, she rolled up her sleeves with her fellow councillors and put the concerns and needs of her constituents into play. She told the gallery: “I feel it is only fair that we suspend progress on all construction, until we get a report back with the added public consultation information. “I also believe we should consider doing an internal audit of the complaints which have already been received. “That will help provide better context with our decision making. “I think we need to have a full and proper look at this – and from a personal point of view, stuff has come to light for me of which I wasn’t aware of when I voted on this decision. “Whether it will change my decision – I don’t know – but I want to make sure we make the best decision for the whole community.” Mr Hyde confirmed to the gallery that construction on the facility wouldn’t commence until 2017, which would give the council plenty of time to thoroughly consult the community.

Pavetto takes aim at ALP MSHS students plan for LIBERAL National Party candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto has hit back at recent remarks by Federal Labor (ALP) Opposition regarding land clearing. Under a Bill Shorten-led Government, the ALP said they are prepared to introduce national tree clearing legislation – which, on top of proposed State-based Palaszczuk Government legislation would leave FNQ landowners on their knees. Mr Pavetto took direct aim at the ALP, by stating that he believed the pledge was nothing more than an attempt to win the southern state Greens vote. “Labor’s plan to introduce new, federal tree clearing laws, on top of new, state laws shows they are willing to sacrifice jobs in North Queensland, in order to win green votes down south,” he said. “Farmers, whose livelihoods depend on looking after the land they work, are the most responsible environmentalists we have and should be

given proper credit. “At the same time as the LNP is planning to develop North Queensland, Labor is teaming up with the Greens to lock up high quality farming and grazing land and throw away the key. “Not only are these laws an unprecedented assault on farmers and graziers in North Queensland, they will also impact towns across the Kennedy electorate – like Ingham, Charters Towers, Mareeba and Mount Isa – that rely on agriculture to survive.” Mr Pavetto said that despite pure intentions, the Katter’s Australia Party was struggling at federal and state level to hold the ALP at bay on the matter. “The Katter Party is proving it is unable to block Palaszczuk’s new tree clearing laws in the Queensland Parliament – despite having unprecedented power in the Parliament,” he said. “If Labor is elected on July 2, Bob Katter as a lone independent will have no chance at blocking the tree clearing laws in the Federal Parliament.”

courtroom stoush

By Justin Fris

MAREEBA State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College students will be determined to outsmart each other on May 17 at the Mareeba Courthouse. But don’t panic – this courtroom stoush is all about intellect and improving understanding of our legal system. MSHS gifted and talented co-ordinator Christina Ellacott explained the fundamentals of the Tablelands Schools Mooting Competition, along with the educational benefits for the students. “St Stephen’s have got quite a good record in the competition,” she said. “We’re hoping this year that we can trounce them (laughs), but we might not be able to. “Raymond Heggie, Peter Apel and Magistrate Tom Braes all sat down many years ago and got the competition under way – and it’s a fantastic

opportunity for students in year’s 10, 11 and 12 who are interested in law.” Ms Ellacott added: “The students get given police evidence and statements and then are required to develop their case. “It is a very formal process. They need to learn about court etiquette, using appropriate language and there is quite a strict marking scheme.” Once the information has been attained, the students are required to work as a team in a bid to put their best possible case forward. Along the way, they will also receive generic advice from Mareeba Police on how specific court situations can play out. “This year, St Stephen’s will be prosecuting and MSHS students will be defending,” Ms Ellacott said. “The interesting thing is that the majority of our previous students who have done this competition have gone on to do law.”

Weier announced as Greens candidate for Kennedy

THE race for the federal seat of Kennedy is heating up, as prosperous candidates size up their chances. As it stands, current candidates in the running are sitting member Bob Katter (Katter’s Australia Party). Jonathan Pavetto (Liberal National Party) and Norm Jacobson (Australian Labor Party). The trio were joined last week by Malandabased Valerie Weier, who Malanda-based resident has been pre-selected as Valerie Weier will reprethe Greens’ candidate. sent the Greens in the Ms Weier ran as the race for the federal seat of Greens candidate for the Kennedy. state seat of Dalrymple at the 2015 Qld state election. She polled 4.23 per cent of the overall vote, with the majority of her votes coming from Malanda and voters who pre-polled in Atherton. Despite this result, Ms Weier is a very positive person who is committed to her local community, with an extensive background in several industries. As a resident of the Tablelands for the past 15 years, Ms Weier has been active in many community organisations including as a former co-ordinator of the Malanda Falls Visitor Centre and as a committee member of the Festival Malanda in the early 2000s. Valerie has a background in nursing, natural therapies and social research, and volunteers with several organisations across the Tablelands which support the restoration of the environment and the development of sustainable agriculture in the region. Ms Weier said she was motivated by her grandchildren and wants to help preserve our nation in a bid that future generations can enjoy the luxuries that we enjoy today. “Australia deserves an accountable, transparent government that cares for its people, protects the environment and creates a just and equitable society based on a sustainable economy,” she said. Additionally, Ms Weier is passionate about protecting our land and water from the expansion of coal mining and coal- seam gas extraction, and believes North Queensland has the potential to become a world leader in renewal energy generation, providing jobs and economic growth for the region as Australia transitions way from fossil fuels. “I believe the long-term protection of the Great Barrier Reef is also of vital importance to all Australians and must have priority with all levels of Government,” she said.

By Justin Fris LOCAL innovation champion Christine Doan is a passionate member of Startup and Innovation Tablelands (SIT) – and she has Mareeba in her sights. A series of workshops will be held in Mareeba next month and in August, with Ms Doan encouraging Mareeba Shire residents to participate and turn their elusive ideas into reality. The first set of workshops cover the topic of ‘Crowdfunding’ and will be held on May 9 and 10 (Monday and Tuesday) at the Mareeba Leagues Club between 5.30pm and 8pm. Crowdfunding is a way of raising money for a specific cause, with all donations made online. The workshops will give people a complete understanding of the process and how Crowdfunding can be executed successfully. Later in the year (August 20-22), the SIT team will facilitate a weekend-long event, which will see people form teams, develop an idea and then eventually pitch it to consultants and other members of the audience. At last Wednesday afternoon’s Mareeba Chamber

of Commerce lunch, Ms Doan spoke with members of Mareeba’s business community and why the concept was imperative for the region. “It’s time that we all brought out our inner entrepreneur,” she said. “Many of you have been brought up with the idea like I was, that you would go to school, get a job, have that job forever and that was it. “These days, we all know that the pattern has changed. And becoming an entrepreneur and being a little more creative, is a really important aspect of everyone’s business. “We’re here to encourage people of all ages to develop and maintain the skill set of entrepreneurialism.” In the long-term, SIT is keen to establish an entrepreneurialism ecosystem, which it hopes will enhance the overall future of the Tablelands economy. Additionally, they are also committed to forming a solid base with both the Tablelands Regional and Mareeba Shire Councils, and build a framework to enhance job creation and investment across the region. If you are interested in attending one or both of the workshops, you can either register via: hello@startuptablelands.org or phone Ms Doan on 0419 656 247.

Emergency service grant success for Cook Shite Cook Shire Council has been successful in an emergency services grant application, which will be used to provide essential equipment to local emergency volunteers. The funds, from the Energex, Ergon and Powerlink State Emergency Services (SES) Equipment Program, will be used for an inverter generator for the Coen SES group, a split basket stretcher for the Cooktown SES group and an inverter generator and scene lighting for the Lakeland SES group. State Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner Peter Jeffrey said Energex, Ergon and

Powerlink were very proud to be able to support the SES. “We hope the additional equipment provided through this program will enable you to improve your response to the community,” Mr Jeffrey said. Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott added: “These volunteers have an extremely thankless and often dangerous job, and they don’t get paid to do it. “They are there to support the community in times of need, and this funding will help them improve those essential emergency services they provide.”

Marine forum healthily attended More than 30 people attended the inaugural Cooktown Fishing and Marine Industry Forum last week to discuss the barriers and opportunities for growth in their industry. The joint Cook Shire Council and Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism (CCCT) event attracted Council staff, local fishing and sightseeing boat operators, seafood salesmen and others related to the industry. “It was a great first meeting,” CCCT president Mick Davies said. “We heard directly from the industry what is holding them back and what their concerns are, and then discussed how we can all work together to improve the industry.” Cook Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Timothy Cronin added: “Community engagement is vital to ensuring community needs are met in relation to anything

Council does that will impact the fishing and marine industries. Council will work closely with the industry and other stakeholders in the upcoming Charlotte Street and Webber Esplanade upgrade and are also investigating ways to improve identified issues such as lack of parking in the wharf precinct,” Mr Cronin said. Issues raised included limited access to the public pontoon, lack of parking at the wharf precinct and the short tourist season, while opportunities raised included better promotion, holding local fishing events and partnerships with industry heavyweights such as Ports North. The group agreed to put their ideas on paper, including a concept drawing of the Webber Esplanade and wharf precinct area upgrade. Impressed with pavetto The announcement that the Northern Co-Operative Research Centre was to be located in Townsville was very important for all of Northern Queensland. Senator Matt Canavan was invited to make the announcement by Ewen Jones, the Federal member for Herbert, along with young Jonathan Pavetto, the LNP candidate for the seat of Kennedy at the July 2 election. Kennedy is a huge electorate with voters spread across a very large area. The people of Kennedy would all be interested to know that Jonathan Pavetto has the ear of members of the Federal Cabinet and is being treated as a part of the team. Whilst in Townsville - at Jonathan’s invitation - Senator Canavan visited farmers in the Herbert River district, to be a part of a ‘Walk and Talk’ day. If ever we are to progress with the development of the North, we need a young politician who is well educated, with drive and enthusiasm to get the job done and who is well

Pitt talks social reform Recently I introduced into State Parliament an important social reform — establishing the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS) in Queensland that will be debated in coming weeks. The NIIS will operate parallel to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS supports people born with disabilities while the NIIS will initially cover people catastrophically injured in vehicle crashes who “fall through a gap” in compulsory third party insurance. CTP insurance is a fault-based scheme. If you are at fault in a crash or nobody is at fault – such as crashes involving animals on a road – then you are not covered for the costs of treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care even if you

sustain catastrophic injuries such as brain or spinal damage, amputations, or blindness. In fact, around half of the 140 people catastrophically injured in Queensland crashes every year aren’t guaranteed lifetime care. The State Parliamentary Committee that examined legislation to establish the NIIS estimated motorists would need to pay $76 per vehicle to fill the gap. A rise in CTP has occurred in every state that has implemented the scheme - some as high as $110. However, after considerable work by Queensland Treasury and the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, that cost has been reduced to $32 a year or 60 cents extra each week for lifetime care and support – the nation’s most affordable scheme. In 2013 the LNP Government signed a national agreement committing to introducing the NIIS and the Palaszczuk Government is implementing the scheme and acting to fill the CTP gap. Queenslanders should expect bi-partisan support when the legislation is debated because it benefits us all. Curtis Pitt MP, Treasurer of Queensland

Brain Cancer action week Brain Cancer Action Week, May 1-7, is an opportunity to increase awareness and support for Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with a brain tumour this year. Risk factors are not easily identifiable, and no screening procedures currently exist. Brain cancer is the leading cancer killer for people under the age of 39 and children under 10. This Brain Cancer Action Week, with your support, we will continue to invest in research and support for those affected, including carers and families. ANZAC DAY

What feelings are evoked by those two words? Sadness, futility, yes; but courage and pride rise above the negatives. We, who have never had to answer the call to defend our Country can only wonder at the awesome courage that these men and women displayed, and the glorious pride and love for their families and homeland that encouraged them on. We are the grateful and proud recipients of their courage. 2014 to 2018 has been declared a Commemorative period of WW1. The volunteers of the Mareeba Heritage Museum contributed to the commemoration by collating the names of as many Woothakata Shire (now Mareeba Shire) residents who enlisted for service in WW1 as possible. These names were sourced from Cenotaphs, Honour Rolls, Plaques in Churches, and in one case, a board under a mango tree. Because many of the enlistees came from small towns, no longer in existence, it is quite likely that names from these places are not listed. The book is on display in the WW1 section of The Mareeba Heritage Museum. We would welcome information to either add or correct any entry that has been made, after all, these incredible people were our forefathers, and “we will remember them”. Please come and visit. Entry is free but donations are always welcome.

Brad Maisel 1965 - 2016

Tom Maisel delivered the below Eulogy to family and friends at the Maisel family property on Friday, April 22, 2016. Bradford Zaiser Maisel was born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on September 10, 1965. He was the youngest of the three – my sister Carol being the oldest and myself stuck smack in the middle. I think the word close aptly describes three siblings born over a period of just three years, four months. When Carol and I started school, Brad bore the brunt of that closeness. I can remember my Mother telling the story about how Brad’s boredom at being home alone almost drove her crazy. I’m pretty sure this was when Brad developed his jigsaw-puzzle passion. Pretty soon he was doing 500 and then 1000 piece puzzles. The only problem was, he never wanted to take them apart, so almost every rug in the house was full of puzzles underneath. We grew up happily enjoying the life of thrills and spills provided by being raised on a family farm with cousins our own ages. Our father and uncle grew, harvested and processed around 1000 acres of Lucerne, maize and oats turning it into pelleted cattle and horse feed. Two things came from this agricultural background. The most awesome and fearsome homemade playground ever built and the agricultural environment where Brad and I learned to operate and repair a diverse range of equipment. Of course, at that young age we just thought it was fun and didn’t really fully appreciate just how beneficial those skills would be until we were teenagers. No one enjoyed a prank more than Brad. He was clever, funny and fun to be around and he knew how to use these talents to his advantage. It was hard to know whether to be angry or to laugh at his pranks. If you ever had a meal with Brad you would know he hated vegetables. His favourite way around it was to quietly sneak out the back door while Mom had her back turned.

I can also remember Mom being flabbergasted to find Brad’s vegetables in his pants pockets when she did his laundry. I have always been bigger than Brad, and even though he knew he’d get the worst of it when he picked on me, he just couldn’t help himself. He just knew how to push my buttons to the point Mom worried Brad wouldn’t survive his childhood. But we were good friends, too. As the years passed plans started to be made to find another location where farming could continue. You guessed it… Hello Australia. While part of the family started the move over, Brad stayed behind to finish his education. Even though he had such a carefree attitude, he was very intelligent and earned a Bachelor of Business degree in marketing as well as completing his trade school qualification as an electrician. Office life was not for Brad, though. He preferred working with tools and working outside. For several years in the US, Brad applied his skills in several areas of the construction industry. Early in 2000, shortly after Coby was born, Brad and his young family made their permanent move to Australia. We all knew Brad worked hard, often seven-days a week during the harvesting season. He was a well respected canegrower in the area and gave of his time to the benefit of the industry. Brad was on the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area Council and the Mareeba Dimbulah Channel Scheme Local Management Arrangements Interim Board. His involvement in the industry was centered on ensuring water security and affordable water pricing for all irrigators. His knowledge and interest of the scheme infrastructure drove his passion for a locally managed and maintained irrigation scheme. Brad also had a mind for logistics and was instrumental in the process of bedding down the harvesting

and transport system for the Tableland cane being supplied to Mossman Mill. The local cane industry recognized Brad’s contributions by presenting him with the 2014 Industry Co-operator Award. This award recognizes a cane grower’s contribution to productivity, profitability, sustainability and technological advancement. It was for specific recognition of Brad’s instrumental role in securing the B-double permits on Mareeba Shire Council roads and for helping to develop the campaign crush model. Brad also knew the importance of balancing the priorities in his life. He played as hard as he worked; and family was important to him. His wife Stacey and three children – Jordan, Nate and Coby, were his world. When Jordan spent a semester in high school in the US, Brad flew over to see her off to her first prom and to watch her play in the Maryland State High School Tennis championships. When Carol and her children visited Australia, Brad was always available to whip up some fun. He took them sky diving, knowing it was an adventure that would develop courage and a sense of accomplishment in all of them and which they would never have completed without his encouragement. There was flying and fishing with his friends. He often told stories of these adventures and the fish he had caught. And some were even true. Once Brad’s children found the need to move to Brisbane for educational and tennis pursuits, Brad frequently flew down to be

with them. Today has been a hard day. We can’t really understand why Brad was taken away from us. We can take a small comfort in that on his last day he was “Living Life to the Full” enjoying two things he loved – fishing and flying. How will I remember my brother? That’s easy. He was just that, my little brother. First and foremost I see him as the family man. He loved his family profoundly. He was always available to guide and protect them and his devotion to them was the foundation of his actions. As his children grew older, he mentored them in a way that each one will be able to say that he was a positive role model and an inspiration in their lives. Brad always strived to be the best he could be: son, brother, husband, father, uncle, friend and businessman. I want us all to remember to laugh and smile, pull a prank and have some fun every day. We only get one life and if we can learn anything from my brother, it would be to work hard and to enjoy the fruits of your labour just as hard, for none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Thank you for celebrating my brother’s life. We love you Brad.

Well done Kate Wilcox in winning the public speaking section of the Lions Youth of the Year District Final in Townsville. Well done indeed. Lions Australia is one of Australia’s largest service organisations with almost 30,000 members and 1,400 clubs across Australia. Lions Australia raises over $20 million per annum to assist in community and health projects, and funding for Lions foundations and programs. Lions Australia has been supporting childhood cancer research at least as far back as 1976. Since that time childhood cancer survival rates have improved to about 75% but unfortunately every year in Australia more than 800 children are still diagnosed with cancer and three Australian children die from cancer every week. Among childhood illnesses, cancer remains the most common cause of death in Australia. Since 1996, Lions Australia has shown outstanding commitment contributing over $5 million to childhood cancer research. This effort has resulted in, amongst other things, safer and more effective blood stem cell transplantation for leukaemia patients following chemotherapy which can lead to shorter hospitalisation and more rapid recovery. Lions have done a lot but

the job is not over because we believe every child has the right to a healthy life. Mareeba Lions are again planning the town scape Metrogaine, a fun event to be held at Arnold Park on June 19. Funds raised will be used to help achieve the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation’s s mission to prevent kids with cancer dying by raising funds and donating these funds to the best scientific and clinical childhood cancer research conducted right across Australia. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. Laugh out loud with Melissa McCarthy in ‘The Boss’ New on the Rising Sun screen this week is the Melissa McCarthy comedy – THE BOSS, which has tremendous appeal for all her fans. Melissa is, after all, one of today's leading comedians. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson continue in one of the biggest movies of the year – CAPTAIN AMERICA - CIVIL WAR. It is one gigantic movie in every aspect. Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis and Kate Hudson star in an excellent comedy MOTHER'S DAY, which has a special preview screening this Sunday – Mother's Day. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. Review by Louise Keller: Melissa McCarthy fans will enjoy the ride, although this comedy limits itself within its predictable comic boundaries. Peter Dinklage is the film's greatest asset - his dastardly Samurai swordyielding mogul with the new pretentious name is impossibly wonderful - or wonderfully impossible as the occasion demands. In any event, Dinklage is loads of fun, never taking himself too seriously and delighting at every turn. This second collaboration between director Ben Falcone and McCarthy may have looked better on paper (Tammy was the first in 2014). After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Ingredients 1 cauliflower head 1/2 cup hot cooking water 1/2 chicken stock cube 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon salt salt and pepper, to taste nutmeg, to taste (optional)

April 21 to May 21

Method 1. Clean the cauliflower head from green leaves, and chop it into reasonably large but manageable pieces. Place it in the big sauce pan with water, bring to boil and boil for 30-40 minutes until cauliflower is really soft. 2. Remove from heat and drain cauliflower from water. You should have about 3 and 1/2 cups of cooked and sliced cauliflower pieces. 3. Dissolve 1/2 of a chicken stock cube in 1/2 cup of boiling water. 4. In a food processor, combine drained cooked cauliflower and 1/2 cup of boiling water with 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and process really well, until a very creamy sauce forms: 5. Transfer sauce into a large sauce pan and keep it warm on the stove top. Season with salt and pepper, and nutmeg (optional), to taste.

EXPRESS sPORT Sharks topple ‘out of sorts’ Gladiators

By Justin Fris A blistering second half display from the Mossman/ Port Douglas Sharks saw them run out 35-20 winners over the Mareeba Gladiators in last Saturday evening’s Cairns District Rugby League contest at Davies Park. After leading 10-0 within the blink of an eye, Mareeba’s application to the contest dropped and saw the Sharks pile on 34 unanswered points. The Express had a unique insight into the matchday environment for an A-grade coach at CDRL level during the evening, with Gladiators coach Josh Stowers opting to scan his eyes over proceedings from the press box. Stowers’ men took initiative from their opening set of six and albeit for an error on the 4th tackle, look destined to cross the line first. The visitors had very poor line speed early on, with up to four players at a time either miles offside or standing with their hands on their hips. Via a walkie-talkie, Stowers was concise and efficient with all instructions. He didn’t miss a beat and was urging his bench to seize the opportunity being provide. “Look at their forwards, they are tired already,” he directed the bench. “Let’s get our backs up the middle.” No sooner had Stowers made the comment, fullback Ricky Shave and halfback Jason Bail teamed up through a gaping hole in the Sharks defence. Three Sharks defenders were offside by about 15m, as the ball was whisked out wide to exciting winger Petale Tai, who scored the game’s first try. Coasting at a 10-0 lead, momentum for the hosts

began to erode. After charging down a 5th tackle kick from Bail, Sharks halfback Robbie Amber raced away untouched in the 26th minute and sliced the lead back to a converted try. Both sides went through the motions for the remainder of the half, with no side able to break the game open. “We need to show a bit more enthusiasm,” Stowers said, as he prepared to head down to the Gladiators dressing room. After an initial set which was full of promise, the visitors got a sniff of victory only minutes into the second half and took victory by the throat. Livewire winger Peter Tuccandidgee scored consecutive tries, with Rickie Burchill, Khaele Bowen and Eddie Daniel also getting in on the action. By now, Stowers had relocated to the bench and cast a concerned figure as he tried to arrest the disappointing turn of events for the home side. The Gladiators would run in two late tries to Tom Hughes and Ian King, which added a bit more respectability to the scoreboard. A bitter pill followed in the 77th minute for the Gladiators faithful, when Amber coolly slotted a close range field goal with no pressure imposed on him. Post match, Stowers said that he was disappointed with how the match eventuated and that he would go ‘back to the drawing board’ and regroup his side ahead of this weekend’s ‘Tablelands Derby’. It may have been a disappointing end to a promising evening, but Gladiators faithful can be assured that Stowers has the ability and rapport with his men to change his side’s fortunes.

Dale in action on the track.

Moss is destined for future in mountain biking By Justin Fris DALE Moss has recently returned from an incredible mountain biking experience – and the best appears yet to come. January was a very busy month for the Mareeba-based rider, who completed a series of qualifying rounds across Australia prior to competing in the U/17 national championships in Brighton, Victoria. “Prior to the nationals, we had to complete five qualifying rounds, which were held across Australia in places like Pemberton (Western Australia) and in Toowoomba,” he said. “Each race was held on a 5km track, of which we did three laps. “I managed to get a 7th and 9th in the two Pemberton events and a 10th in Toowoomba.” Dale explained that each rider was ranked across qualifying, with their final ranking determining their start position at the nationals. On a cold, wet and unforgiving day in Victoria, Dale made a fantastic start to the nationals, before his wheel was unfortunately clipped and he hurtled toward the

ground. “I skinned half of my body,” he said. “I was in 7th place prior to the crash and dropped back into the field to about 21st. “I just wanted to get back up, go as hard as I could and ended up finishing in 15th place.” Working keenly with his coach Steve Rankine (Tropical Training) and Nathan Jones (Bicycle Centre Cairns) Dale has transformed from a teenager who developed a passion for mountain biking, into a humble competitor who is determined to go as far as he can in the sport. “I originally played basketball – but I got sore knees,” he said. “I then cycled around the street for a little bit and said: ‘hey, my knees are feeling a lot better’. “Since then, I’ve never looked back.” Dale is preparing for his next set of challenges, which include some local races across Cairns and Mareeba, before the state championships in October. “In terms of the state championships, I’m hoping for a podium finish,” he said. “I’m really interested in going as far as possible in mountain biking.”

O’Hare’s brace seals three points for Heat By Justin Fris THE FNQ Heat put their opening loss of the 2016 NPL season to bed, after defeating the Brisbane Strikers 2-0 last Saturday afternoon at Endeavour Park. In fantastic form, the Strikers were tipped to give the Heat a real fright and potentially take all three points back with them to Brisbane. However, Tim Campbell’s men had other ideas, with Crios O’Hare nabbing a

tidy brace and keeping the Heat on top of the ladder. Post match, Campbell said: “It was convincing. “I think we did deserve the win tonight and we played really well. “That’s our best performance of the year and it’s against a very good team. “We had to make some changes because we had a few injuries, but I always knew that Crios O’Hare had goals in him. “He is up to match fitness now.”

Ciggy Butts burn plucky youngsters By Justin Fris

Warren Thomson keeps his eye on Tyson Tatti during the third quarter.

PAGE 26 The Express, Wednesday, May 4, 2016

THE Ciggy Butts continue to strike fear into the upper echelons of the Mareeba Basketball League, after seeing off the Young G’s 50-47 last Thursday evening. Don’t let the scoreline or margin fool you for a minute - the Butts built their victory with a blistering 16-3 opening quarter. The G’s would gradually gnaw away at the deficit throughout the night, however their overzealous nature on offence saw them unable to land several opportunities. Warren Thomson and Fabio Nocilla were outstanding for the Butts, with their

coherent instructions on the court setting the tone for the game. The Young G’s were well represented on the evening by Ash Cater, Tyson Tatti and Omar Myrteza, who were all at their energetic best. Turning home with a handy lead, the matchwinning moment for the Butts occured with 5min left in the game, when Nocilla stole the ball from Tatti and strolled in for an easy layup. Thursday night’s fixtures are as follows: Comets v Young G’s (7.00pm), Red Devils v Ciggy Butts (8pm) and Express v Stingrays (9pm)

EXPRESS sPORT Atherton Roosters hardman Jake Dawe grinds his way forward.

Lachlan with his bronze medal at the national championships in Canberra.

Lachlan’s love for shot put By Justin Fris TALENTED St Stephen’s Catholic College athlete Lachlan Moss is hopeful for another successful year in shot put, after finishing in the top three at last year’s national championships in Canberra. Lachlan finished third in his age group (U/12), with his effort of 12.61m his finest effort in the sport. “I threw a lot further at the nationals - there was a heap of adrenaline and it pushed me to go further,” he said. “At the state championships, I was reaching the 12.28m range.” Lachlan’s involvement in shot put is entirely school-based. Unlike others, he isn’t involved with a local athletics club, but regularly will travel to Cairns to train with his coach prior to school, district, state or national competitions. It was in Year 4 when he first tried his hand at shot put, and his passion and appreciation for the sport has grown from there. “In Year 4 we had an athletics carnival - I’d never tried shot put before, and I thought I would give it a go,” he said.

“I ended up winning the competition on the day and I thought ‘maybe I’m good at this’.” In terms of success in shot put, Lachlan said it was important to develop a successful technique and ensure that your body and wrist are both at an appropriate angle. “You have to flick your wrist when you release it,” he said. “At nationals when you are constantly pushing throws out, you can really feel it (toll) on your body.” But Lachlan’s passion and success isn’t ego driven. He competes for the love of it and is humbled by the opportunity that has come with representing Queensland. When he isn’t hitting the books or training, you might see Lachlan donning the green and gold for the Mareeba Gladiators U/13’s on any given Saturday afternoon. “I play in the front row,” he said. “I really enjoy playing rugby league and I’m hopeful of staying injury-free ahead of upcoming athletic competitions.” Lachlan will commence training in coming weeks for the St Stephen’s’athletics carnival.

Roosters remain unbeaten heading into ‘Tablelands Derby’ By Justin Fris THE Atherton Roosters head into Saturday evening’s ‘Tablelands Derby’ against the Mareeba Gladiators refreshed and unbeaten. Dean Howard’s men recorded a hard fought 26-22 win over the Edmonton Storm last Friday evening, with the middle of the field an absolute quagmire. But, after the weathering both conditions and the slippery Storm backline, the Roosters managed to get on top and stay there. Post match, Howard said the weather had a large bearing on the overall gameplay and that he was pleased that his players held their application under pressure. “It was pretty even all round tonight,” he said. “There were several large muddy patches out there and there was a lot of dropped ball. “Edmonton play a very physical style of football, but I was pleased that we stood up to it. “They’ve had a few new players come into the side in the last few weeks and I think they’ll be really hard to beat as the year goes on.” The rivalry between Atherton and Mareeba extends to almost everything in this region - let alone rugby league. In recent seasons, the Roosters have had the upper hand – but they have yet to face a Gladiators side

MAREEBA

coached by Josh Stowers in a regular season fixture. The Gladiators have played excellent football at Davies Park this season, but haven’t been able to translate that form on the road. Stowers prides himself on completing sets and minimising errors. Howard loves his men to play confidently and execute excellent scramble defence. For the Gladiators to win on Saturday evening, they will need to keep Jake Dawe and Christopher Campbell quiet; and take every opportunity possible. The Roosters often start fast at home, with slick ball movement from dummy half. Howard said his players were looking forward to the Derby, as the rivalry meant a great deal to many of the local players in the squad. “With the Friday night game, we’ll be able to have a bit of a rest and regroup on Tuesday night at training,” Howard said. Stowers – who played against the Roosters during his playing days in 1999 – said that derbies were always an exciting occasion and many of the local players were keen to put on their best performance. “We’ll be able to regroup on Tuesday night at training and go from there,” he said. Kickoff at Roosters Stadium is 7pm.
