MAREEBA and Tablelands irrigators are hoping for a solid wet season as Tinaroo Dam slowly comes back from the brink. The dam hit its lowest level in more than 12 years when it dipped below 38 per cent capacity last November, but has been slowly rebounding with the help of some much-needed rain.
The capacity of the dam is currently about 47 per cent. In a further boost for irrigators, the medium priority water allocation was increased from 81 per cent to 100 per cent on February 1. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro welcomed the move by dam operator SunWater.
“It means irrigators in this water year are not going to face any shortfalls from their allocation, which means that most farmers can maintain their current business operations without having to cut back,” he said. “But the concern is what happens after the wet season and how much rain finally does end up

Our Mary a true centenarian HARDSHIP might as well be Mary Stirrup’s middle name. The former Mareeba mother, grandmother and great-grandmother celebrated her 100th birthday last week, following it up with a family party at Mt Kooyong Nursing Home last Saturday. About 36 family members attended, with Mrs Stirrup’s son John proud of his mother’s milestone. “Mum’s a very quiet, private sort of a person…She’s a good mother,” he said. “She’s got a strong heart. Even now she hardly takes any of her medicine.” The daughter of a Cobb & Co driver, Mrs Stirrup eventually met her husband Herb in Mareeba before the couple found themselves raising a family on a tobacco farm and later, a dairy farm in Malanda. “It was constant work on the farm. You had to milk the cows twice a day, seven days a week…rain hail or shine,” John
said. “There were five of us in the family. We didn’t have all the modern conveniences we have today. “House work those days was nearly a full time job when you had five children to look after as well.” The couple then retired to Mareeba in the 1960s, with Mr Stirrup senior passing away about 15 years ago. Part of what’s dubbed “The Greatest Generation”, Mrs Stirrup has lived through the Great Depression, World War II and the subsequent prosperity boom of the 1950s – all the while raising a growing family. “She’s always coped with life. They were a different generation, not the sort of pampered generations we have today,” John said of his mother. “You just had to get up and get on with it.”

A CHRISTIAN service to highlight the struggles of women in the Philippines has been well received by Mareeba parishioners. More than 60 people from several denominations packed Saint Thomas of Villanova Catholic Church last Friday morning for the annual World Day of Prayer. This year’s theme, “Am I being unfair to you?”, focused on the plight of women in the Philippines, who face poverty, domestic violence and human trafficking. As members of the Catholic, Anglican and Uniting Church took part in the service, Mareeba Filipino community member Marlene Cotterill gave a powerful speech about her home country. “We have a lot of hardships and struggles in the Philippines but our faith is what keeps us going,” she told The Express. “Education is most valuable to us because we know it transforms lives when you’ve got issues like poverty and exploitation.” Mrs Cotterill also emphasised the importance of family in her
speech, which is the backbone of Filipino society. Members of the Cairns and Mareeba Filipino community performed cultural dances at the church entrance and morning tea at the Saint Thomas’ school hall afterwards. Saint Thomas priest Father John Sullivan was thrilled with the turnout on the day. “It’s good to get together, pray together and do things together,” he said. Fr Sullivan said he had seen the first hand the hardships endured by Filipino workers while serving as a priest in South Korea for 26 years. “They have to do the jobs the Koreans don’t want to do, which were called the three Ds – dirty, dull and dangerous,” he said. “Some of them would lose a limb or maybe their life.” 2017 marks the 91st year the World Day of Prayer has been held, with over three million people in more than 170 countries taking part each year.

Health reps look at options HEALTH care representatives are yet to decide on what the future patient care model will look like for Mareeba once the town’s hospital loses $2.1 million in Federal funding. Northern Queensland Primary Health Network CEO Robin Moore met with local GPs and Mareeba Hospital’s medical superintendent on February 22 to discuss options for how future outpatient services would be delivered in the town. It comes as the hospital is set to lose its Council of Australian Governments (COAG) 19(2) funding exemption in October, along with $2.1 million that goes with it. The funding relates to Section 19(2) of the Health Insurance Act 1973, which provides an
exemption for certain hospitals to claim against the Medicare Benefits Schedule for non-admitted, non-referred professional services provided in emergency departments, such as outpatient (GP) services. But Mareeba, which has had that exemption since about 2006, is now no longer eligible because of the increase in its population. Ms Moore is due to meet with Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre and Mareeba Shire Council representatives this Friday to “further progress options to ensure a suitable outcome for the Mareeba community”. “I can assure Mareeba residents that future arrangements will be focused on increasing primary care services, based on community en-
gagement and partnerships with local GPs and Aboriginal Medical Services,” she said. Ms Moore said the February 22 meeting was “very constructive” and she would be presenting the best scenarios back to the GPs which participated “following further discussion with stakeholders”. Federal Assistant Health Minister Dr David Gillespie previously told The Express if there were “unintended consequences” following the hospital’s funding cut, the decision to lift the COAG exemption could be reviewed. Mareeba Hospital employs 14 staff on COAG contracts, with eight of those permanent full-time. However, the remaining six temporary ad-
ministration staff may be assigned new roles once the COAG funding is cut in October. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) Administrator Terry Mehan has previously said the community of Mareeba “would be no worse off” under any changes to the health service model once the COAG funding goes. Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s Health Insurance Amendment (National Rural Health Commissioner) Bill 2017, which was due to be debated last week, has been delayed until the next parliamentary sitting later this month.
Dam needs downpour
VITAL: Tinaroo Dam is slowly refilling.
FROM Page 1 The allocation is then reviewed on a monthly basis and, if feasible, can be increased on top of the base level of allocation set until it reaches 100 per cent. The allocation was only at 70 per cent for irrigators when the current water year started on July 1 last year, before it gradually increased over the next six months. SunWater Mareeba service manager Charlie Martens said he was happy with the inflow of water but “would like some more”. “We’re hoping for more rain and we’re monitoring it closely,” he said. “The fuller the better. For our customers, the higher the dam level, the higher the announced allocation will be in the next water year.” To make your own water allocation prediction, head to www.sunwater.com.au/schemes/mareeba-dimbulah/ scheme-information/announced-allocations and click on “Start of Water Year Announced Allocation Prediction Graph”.

AFTER a combined 67 years of serving the local community, Jenny Henning and Carol Crapp are calling it a day. The Mareeba Meals on Wheels delivery drivers have hung up their car keys and are hoping a new generation of volunteers will fill the void. “It’s not a hard job but you are doing a wonderful service for people who can’t care for themselves,” Mrs Henning said. “Now we’re really looking for the younger ones to step up.” Mrs Crapp, who has served clients at Meals on Wheels for more than 30 years alongside Mrs Henning, said she had loved the camaraderie amongst all volunteers. “You get more back than you give which is
quite true,” she said. “You joke and you laugh. It’s the social aspect of it. “I can come along and be a bit cranky to start with and then come home in a happy mood.” Mrs Henning said Meals on Wheels provided a vital service to the elderly or those in need through simply checking up on them. “I went to one lady’s house who I’d known for a long time, and when I saw her, I thought “She’s not well”. So when I came back, I rang her son up and asked him to check on his mother,” she said. “They’re the sort of things we can help with. In the end, that lady went to a home because that incident was almost a turning point
for her.” The community organisation has about 40 volunteers but is in need of more drivers, food delivery people and kitchen helpers to lend a hand. “If we don’t get new blood in, Meals on Wheels will cease to exist,” Mrs Henning said. “It’s a very rewarding thing to do for the community.” Mareeba Meals on Wheels vice-president Margaret McCann said the organisation would love to see more local businesses get on board, with Bendigo Bank’s Mareeba branch sending a staff member to help out once a month. To volunteer at Meals on Wheels or to arrange home delivery, call 4092 2278 or phone Margaret McCann directly on 4092 1480.

COOK Shire residents are staying put in their State electorate after last month’s redistribution shake up. The shire remains largely unchanged under the proposed electoral boundary redistributions released by the Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) on February 24. “The redistribution maps again highlight the incredible geographic, environmental, social and cultural diversity of the Cook electorate,” said Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott. “The electorate stretches from the Torres Strait down to Mareeba and Cairns and across to the Gulf, covering almost 200,000 square kilometres, but has only 24,000odd people on the electoral roll.” By contrast, the seat of Barron River is only 600 square kilometres but has more than 27,000 people on the roll.” The redistribution will see four extra seats in south-
east Queensland created, increasing the number of MPs from 89 to 93, while several existing seats have been renamed and had their boundaries redrawn across the state. Under the QRC proposal, Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth’s seat has been broken in two and part of it merged with another. That has seen the new seats of Hill and McMaster created in place of Dalrymple while State MP Robbie Katter’s seat of Mt Isa is renamed Traeger and expanded to absorb Charters Towers. Cook Shire, which is already a member of the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, has recently been accepted into the Torres and Cape Indigenous Mayors Alliance. “We are looking forward to building further on our relationships with our fellow councils and their respective State Government ministerial champions to ensure the Cook electorate as a whole has the attention and support of the State Government,” Cr Scott said.

PHONE: 4092 4774 180 Walsh St, Mareeba www.communityfunerals.com.au THANK YOU: Mareeba paramedics Tony Virzi, Phil Underwood and Vicki Carne. The ambulance service is celebrating 125 years.
Ambos marks milestone
FROM simple stretcher bearers to a virtual hospital on wheels, Queensland’s ambulance service is celebrating 125 years of serving the community. Mareeba Ambulance Station acting officer in charge Phil Underwood said technology and the role of the service had changed dramatically since the formation of Brisbane’s “City Ambulance Transport Brigade” way back in September 1892. “If you look back to the days when they first started, it was basically transporting people to hospital as fast as they could possibly get there,” he said. “But the changes we’ve had have come in leaps and bounds with technology, the level of education and equipment we have these days. It’s just phenomenal.”
SPECIALS AVAILABdLaEy
Paramedics are now able to administer lifesaving medical procedures and treatments, all the while stabilising a patient long enough to get them to hospital. But Mr Underwood said even that role was evolving. “The role of a paramedic has changed quite a bit. Back in the day, it was more trauma-related, so you had a major injury and the paramedics would be involved,” he said. “The dynamics have changed since we’ve starting to become an older generation. We’re living longer, so we’re picking up more patients with medical and chronic illnesses. “We can also help educate patients with things they may be doing wrong in their lifestyle that’s exacerbating their condition.” New paramedics coming through the ranks

are all degree-qualified and Mr Underwood said the role would soon become a nationally registered health profession, similar to doctors and nurses. Mareeba has a core group of experienced paramedics who have been working in the area for more than 20 years. The town’s local ambulance committee has always helped purchase new equipment to further boost the service over the years. “The support from the local community has been great,” Mr Underwood said. “When we turn up, people are obviously very happy to see us and if we can make them feel better, we’re helping with their recovery and it’s also helping our job as well.”

Horn Island veterans remembered
HISTORIC: Bomb craters on Horn Island’s runway during World War II. PICTURE: Torres Strait Heritage.
A FAR North politician has urged the nation not to forget the contribution of thousands of veterans who served on a remote Torres Strait island during World War II. In the aftermath of the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin on February 19, Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch spoke passionately about Horn Island in parliament last Tuesday, which was the second hardest hit air base in Australia during the war. After an attempted raid by Japanese fighters and bombers was repulsed by allied fighters on March 14, 1942, Horn Island would be attacked eight more times over the next 16 months. About 500 bombs pounded the island during that time, with 156 servicemen killed on or around the island. At least 36 bomb craters remain there to this day. Torres Straight Heritage Museum curator and Horn Island historian Vanessa Seekee said the air base was of huge strategic importance to the Allies. “It was the most advanced operational airbase Australia had for Papua New Guinea while still being in Australian waters,” she said.
“The sea lanes up here had to be kept open because they supplied southern areas like Townsville, and if you were coming south from Darwin you had to come via the Torres Strait as well.” By the end of 1942, about 5000 troops were stationed on Horn Island, and an additional 2000 on Thursday Island. That included members of the famed Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion, who Mrs Seekee said provided valuable local knowledge of the area and served with distinction. “They’re the only indigenous battalion Australia’s ever had,” she said. “They were attached to units where they could provide their expertise, like piloting vessels up to PNG. “They knew the islands and the sea lanes so their local knowledge was vital.” March 1, 2018 will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion. Mrs Seekee, who runs an “In Their Steps” World War II tour on the island, said visitors were always surprised to learn of Horn Island’s involvement in the war. “The tours are a mix of archival and personal stories. We’ve interviewed about 300 veterans over the years,” she said. “People are completely surprised that Horn Island had so many air raids and so many were killed on or around it, especially the number of civilians, which was 84.” Mrs Seekee said a joint museum, Torres Strait Regional Authority and Torres Strait Island Regional Council team had already completed conservation of one historic site and were hoping to get funding to conserve another site, a slit trench and machine gun installation.
New teachers welcomed
Mareeba High School Principal Scott Whybird, Mareeba Primary School Principal Mandy Whybird and Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore at the welcome night.
Mareeba State High and Mareeba State Primary schools combined to welcome new staff at both institutions at a special BBQ held at the Mareeba Golf Club on Friday February 24. The evening event included a welcome by indigenous community members and Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore. The evening was staged to introduce new and existing staff to the plans for and history of Mareeba.
Third Far North black spot fixed BUTCHERS Creek has become the latest Far North town to have their mobile black spot fixed. The Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP) has now fixed three problem trouble spots after installing mobile base stations at Forsayth and Speewah last year. Another 15 locations will be fixed under Round One of the MBSP, which is bringing Telstra 3G and 4GX mobile coverage to the Far North. “We expect to complete more sites this year, ahead of schedule,” said Telstra Area General Manager for Northern Queensland Rachel Cliffe. “We are also providing innovative 4G small cell technology to another 11 areas in the Far North, funded solely by Telstra.” Round one of the MBSP is already delivering 499 new and upgraded mobile base stations across the country. Combined with round two of the rollout, starting this year, it represents an investment of $228 million from Telstra, $134 million from the Federal Government and tens of millions in additional funding from various State Governments, local councils and other phone providers.

Region key to Gulf Country EXCITED: Gulf Savannah Development small business officer Annie Cork knows the importance of Mareeba and the Tablelands to Gulf Country.
ROLE MODELS: (L-R) Jodie Turner, Glenda Johnston and Lenore Wyatt will celebrate International Women’s Day today.
Girl power rocks Women’s Day WHETHER it’s politics or business, Glenda Johnston, Jodie Turner and Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt reckon there’s no challenge too big for them to overcome. Ms Johnston, who owns Mareeba and Atherton Curves gyms, and Ms Turner, who runs Maximum Pest Management, are forever busy dealing with clients, managing staff and planning for future growth. Meanwhile, Cr Wyatt spends her time passionately fighting for her community as their local government representative. So when it comes to International Women’s Day, a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in society, the trio jumped at the chance to get on board. “It’s about women getting together and empowering each other,” Ms Turner said. “It’s a time to celebrate our strengths and support our weaknesses,” added Ms Johnston. Cr Wyatt said it was also important to focus on the next generation of young women who face a new set
of challenges in the 21st century. “We need to make sure we keep empowering them, especially in this age of social media,” she said. “Young girls can lose their confidence in a flash with what people say about them and we need to keep reminding them that there are outlets to talk to people.” Ms Johnston said she didn’t see a “man-woman divide” in society, and never let her gender stop her from achieving her goals. “I go for what I want and I work hard to get that,” she said. An International Women’s Day networking function will be held at Mareeba Leagues Club today from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Tickets are $15 per person. To purchase tickets, call the Leagues Club on 4092 2922. >Turn to pages 13-15 to read more about local women in business as we celebrate International Women’s Day today.
MAREEBA and the Tablelands continue to be a crucial retail and service hub for people living in the rough and rugged Gulf Country. Gulf Savannah Development (GSD) small business officer Annie Cork said the six Gulf shires of Burke, Carpentaria, Croydon, Doomadgee, Etheridge and Mornington all benefitted immensely from Mareeba and the Tablelands’ geographic location. “I think there’s probably more of it happening than what every day people know about,” she said. “I know people that come here to get mechanical work on their cars done and buy feed for their cattle and horses,” she said. “There’s a lot of big grazing properties up there.”
Mrs Cork said the region’s abundant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables and country-style retail outlets was another factor in helping local businesses benefit from Gulf customers. “The synergies and the linkages between Mareeba, the Tablelands and the Gulf are enormous,” she said. “Everyone has to come through Mareeba, it’s on the Savannah Way.” GSD continues to drive economic and tourism-focused progress in the Gulf, offering several support services for businesses wanting to grow their market share. Currently, the organisation is in the process of managing export bids for a cattle station and Karumba’s fishing industry. “We’ve got a diversity of people that we’re helping,” Mrs Cork said.

Satellite switch still hard on outback CHILDREN relying on satellite internet for distance education in remote parts of the Far North may benefit little after a major switch over late last month. NBN Co’s Sky Muster satellite has taken over from the current Interim Satellite Service (ISS) after it shut down on February 28, promising better speeds but similar reliability compared to the old system. A second Sky Muster satellite, which was launched last October, is due to come online by May. About 1000 homes in Australia had not taken any action before the switchover and stood to lose internet entirely. Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) spokesman Andy Pegler said those who had already switched over to Sky Muster were still experiencing issues. “It’s certainly not been a very robust service at the moment,” he said. “There’s been a number of outages such as problems with the ground stations. Some of them are weather-related. If there’s any amount of rain or even heavy cloud up north where the user is, the service goes off.” Mr Pegler, who recently dealt with his own satellite outage, said the unreliable nature of the service was compounded by the slow response times by NBN when it came carrying out repairs.
“The unfortunate thing is the target time for NBN to do these sort of repairs is 90 days for isolated or remote areas,” he said. “It’s very scary at a time when the Productivity Commission has suggested putting our telephones on the same system. “Sooner or later someone will die from not being able to communicate.” Sky Muster promises speeds of 12Mbps download with a 1Mbps upload, or 25Mbps download with a 5Mbps upload, depending on the service provider. REACH GREAT HEIGHTS WITH CROPLANDS NEW 10 HEAD ULTRA TOWER
Croplands dealer, Tableland Pumps and Pipes in Atherton recently delivered two modified Quantum Mist Ultra Tower sprayers in the Atherton Tableland region of far north Queensland.
Croplands created a customised version of the Quantum Mist Ultra Tower sprayer for far north Queensland orchardists Remo Terranova and Sony Koci.
The two machines are identical and custom built for two mates and fellow orchardists in the region - Remo Terranova of Terranova Farms and Sony Koci of Koci Avocados.
Designed with the Tableland’s tall tree growers in mind - Croplands NEW 10 Head Quantum Mist Ultra Tower will enable you to reach great heights. Croplands’ Quantum Mist is unmatched in horticulture application worldwide for coverage, both on the canopy leaves and the fruit beneath. With its high volume, turbulent, directional air – the proof is in the harvest. TABLELAND PUMPS PIPES AND RURAL 40 - 46 Eclipse Drive ATHERTON 07 4091 2277 www.tpprural.com

Sony designed the modifications he wanted and the Croplands R&D team went to work to create this new tall tree sprayer. The mast of the standard Quantum Mist Ultra Tower has been extended by a metre to stand 6m tall. The custom built machines also have five fan heads on each side, instead of the standard Ultra Tower’s four on each side. The bottom fan is mounted low to enable the sprayer to blow air up the skirt of the tree. The next two fans from the bottom are angled upwards to lift the canopy and the top two fans can be adjusted to
blow down and create converging air currents resulting in turbulent air. This turbulent air is laden with small chemical droplets and provides efficient coverage at all angles. This custom configuration with 10 heads and extra height is predicted to be very popular with other orchardists in the Atherton Tableland area. Tableland Pumps Pipes and Rural will be conducting demonstrations in 2017 by appointment. If you are in far north Queensland and would like to see these custom Quantum Mist sprayers in action, please call Luke Cannon on 0408 180 379 to book a time.

Coeliac Awareness Week SMILES ALL ROUND: Mareeba Gladiators A-grade coach Tye Ingebrigtsen, fullback Joey Burchell and Mareeba Junior Rugby League Club president Darrin Hastie at Friday’s night jersey auction.
Gators nab big bucks in auction THE Mareeba Gladiators have netted themselves more than $11,000 from the local business and sports communities after last Friday’s night’s A-grade jersey auction. Expertly run by club member and professional auctioneer Mark Peters, a feverish wave of bidding took place at Mareeba Leagues Club as players modelled every jersey from one to 17. But it would be Mareeba Junior Rugby League Club who topped the bidding, buying the number one jersey for $1050. Club president Darrin Hastie said he was more than happy to pay the big bucks. “The senior players are going to do a lot for us this year,” he said. “It’s only early in the season but we’re really happy
with how things have been going. “It’s exciting times. We’re keen for the year ahead.” Fullback Joey Burchell said he was his chuffed his jersey scored the highest bid. “I feel proud that the junior club is sponsoring the jersey,” he said. “It’s going to be a big season. All the boys are pumped.” Meanwhile, The Express bought the number nine jersey on the night, currently worn by Gladiators co-captain Maddie Oosen. A-grade player-coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said he was thrilled with the auction. “It’s good to see we’ve got the local support for our club. It’s great,” he said.

one thing we’re going to be talking more about at the conference,” Mr Puglisi said. A fourth generation cane farmer in Mossman, Mr Puglisi said the sugar industry was in a good position with steady prices over the past few years. “We’ve been in a bit of a supply deficit for a few years, which has helped push the price up,” he said. “How long it’s going to be around for, we don’t know, but it has helped get some of the younger people back into the industry.” Mr Puglisi said the mining industry downturn had also helped lure more young people into the sugar industry. Crop diversity is another initiative that will be discussed at the conference, with Mr Puglisi himself growing cocoa and running tours of his farm to further boost his business. “All that sort of thing will be discussed, like alternate crops that can be used on a rotational basis which benefit the sugar industry,” he said. “It’s a chance for some growers to get another income from land that might not be productive under cane but it could be productive for another crop like rice or soy beans.” The Case IH Step UP! 2017 conference will be held at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre from March 27 to March 29. THE next generation of the Far North’s sugar industry are being urged to take part in a biennial conference focused on their future. To be held later this month in Mackay, the Case IH Step UP! 2017 conference will “share, learn and explore ideas” with farmers, harvesters, millers and researchers in the industry. The conference is organised by industry lobby group Next Gen. Next Gen officer Gerard Puglisi said it was important to involve all players young and old in the sugar industry at the conference. “We want to encourage the current generation to come as well because succession planning is a big issue I've been finding throughout the region,” he said. “We’ve got more than 140 people registered so far and we’re aiming for 180 to 200 people.” Next Gen currently runs a program designed to “encourage and support young people” in a career with the sugar industry, leveraging the knowledge of existing industry players. The program stretches from Mossman in the Far North down to northern New South Wales. The conference will feature several new technologies, such as drones and automatic weed sensors, designed to make things easier for cane farmers in the field. That includes a presentation by former Queensland Premier and SwarmFarm Robotics director Campbell Newman. “Drones are becoming more prominent and that’s

New cropduster packs punch A NEW cropduster powered by a massive 800 shaft horsepower engine is set to dominate the skies over farms in North Queensland. Atherton Tableland Air Service’s (ATAS) new $1.2 million Thrush 510G will give the cropdusting business a huge boost in aircraft reliability, performance and availability for farmers in the region. The 510G is powered by a H80-100 turboprop engine from General Electric (GE), the same manufacturer which produces engines for some of the world’s fiercest fighter jets. The aircraft, which arrived at Atherton Aerodrome late last month, is the first of its kind in Australia to be powered by a GE engine. ATAS owner and chief pilot Hamish Jacob was full of praise for the 510G’s performance, which features a 1930L spray system, also known as a “hopper”. “This new aircraft has broadened our horizons as far as our capacity to do extra work,” he said. “We’ve got more total hopper capacity now than we’ve ever had between our three aircraft. “There’s less maintenance with the Thrush… It’s going to cut that labour out. We’ll just become more efficient as a business.” GE Aviation Business Development manager David Auer said the H80 engine was type rated to temperatures as high as 40C, meaning the 510G could operate at full power in hot and high conditions across Mareeba and the Tablelands. “That means pretty much all year round, you’ll have 800 horsepower,” he said. “We have them operating in South Africa, Brazil and North America in similar conditions. “I’m happy to see that Hamish is not only willing to become a pioneer for this aircraft in Australia, but he’s proud to fly something new.” Mr Auer said with ATAS’s purchase of the 510G, he expected to have several more opera-

An Air Tractor AT-401B, also owned by the company, crashed on a farm near Mareeba on January 21 after the pilot experienced engine failure. The 25-year-old walked away from the crash
with only minor hand injuries. ATAS currently employs two full-time senior pilots and two trainee pilots, servicing properties across North Queensland.
Mareeba to take part in Com Games MAREEBA will take part in next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games celebrations when it hosts the Queen’s Baton Relay. Local legends are being called to take part in the Relay, which will come to Mareeba on March 14, 2018, as the Baton ventures towards its final destination. About 3800 “batonbearers” are needed across the country to take part in the Relay, which will kick off on December 25 when the baton arrives in Australia from its global journey throughout Commonwealth nations and territories. Mareeba locals who have achieved something extraordinary, made a significant contribution in sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or the wider community or have excelled athletically or personally are encouraged to apply. Locals who aspire to do any of the above can also apply. Nominees must be at least 10-years-old from December 25 and either be an Australian citizen or lawfully entitled to reside in Australia during the relay period.
PAGE 10 The Express, Wednesday, March 8, 2017
The 100-day relay will finish on the Gold Coast on April 4, 2018 for the start of the Games. The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Queen Elizabeth II through the entire Commonwealth. The Games are then declared officially open when the message is read aloud. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said the Queen’s Baton Relay was a chance to shine a light on the people and places that help make the community truly great. “We’re delighted to be a part of an event that will take Mareeba to the world and I encourage you to nominate a local legend you think deserves to be a batonbearer, whether they’re an aspiring young person or someone who is already accomplished,” he said said. “It’s a tradition that celebrates community pride and that shows us how important a role sport plays to build our great community, which is why we’ve chosen to embrace the baton’s visit wholeheartedly.” To nominate, head to www. gc2018.com/qbr

Power price rise to hurt residents, business LOCAL residents and small businesses will face more financial strain after the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) announced its proposal to increase power prices from the next financial year. Under the draft decision handed down late last month, the typical small business customer on tariff 20 will cop a 1.5 per cent increase while residential customers on tariff 11 are set for a 1.7 per cent increase. “The annual notified price bill for a typical customer on the main residential tariff is expected to increase by $25 from $1490 to $1515,” said QCA chair Professor Roy Green. “For the typical customer on the main small business tariff, the annual increase is expected to be $37 (from $2449 to $2486).” But Queensland Electricity Users Network (QUEN) coordinator Jennifer Brownie argued the supposedly small rise would be worse than it looked once it was introduced on July 1. “Queensland has the dubious honour of being the highest average weekly wholesale electricity price in the National Electricity Market almost every week this year,” she said, adding that wholesale electricity prices make up about 25 per cent of a power bill.
“This is despite the Queensland Government owning and controlling 65 per cent of the electricity generation capacity in Queensland.” According to the QUEN, the wholesale electricity price has risen from an average of $59.99/MWh in calendar year 2016 to $96.89/MWh so far this year. Businesses in regional Queensland were also stung with increases ranging from 11.2 per cent to 15.8 per cent in 2016-17. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said power price increases had been impacting on small businesses for the “last seven or eight years”. “It is impacting on growth and it is causing problems for business that are huge power users,” he said. “This increase is just one of many and it’s an underlying trend that needs to be halted by government. “It’s crippling growth and affecting jobs.” A final decision on regulated retail electricity prices for regional Queensland will be published by the QCA on May 31, with the new prices to apply from July 1. For more information on the price rise, head to www. qca.org.au. Cook MP Billy Gordon did not respond to a request for comment.

PEST: Rabbits are a growing threat to landowners across Australia. PICTURE: QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT
A VIRUS designed to stem the growing population of rabbits has been released across Australia. The national release of a Korean strain of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus, known as “RHDV1 K5”, was rolled out last week. More than 35 community groups and land managers across Queensland were involved in its release, which affects only European rabbits. “Those who are releasing the virus on their properties will be working closely with biosecurity officers in their regions to ensure they achieve the best management outcomes,” said Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries rabbit researcher Dr Peter Elsworth. “It is amazing how two rabbits can become 200 rabbits in just two years, and in another two years that could be 40,000. That is why it is important that we keep on top of the problem with new interventions and new tools.” The virus release comes after more than five years of testing through the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre RHD Boost project, with financial support and resources provided by the Federal government, State governments, industry and

non-government organisations. While they weren’t a major problem in the region, Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said he was pleased that biosecurity measures were being against the spread of rabbits. “If they get to very large numbers, they become a problem,” he said. “It’s more an issue of keeping them out.” Mr Moro said wild pigs were far more of an issue for farmers across Mareeba and the Tablelands, given the damage they cause to locally-grown crops. Dr Elsworth admitted that rabbit bio-control was “not a silver bullet solution” but was “most beneficial when applied as part of an integrated and complementary pest management approach”. “That’s why we recommend that land managers undertake follow-up control measures after the release of the virus on their properties,” he said. To report sightings of rabbits or evidence of disease in your region visit www.rabbitscan.org.au or download via the iTunes or GooglePlay stores by searching for “FeralScan”.

Come clean on Mareeba hospital WELL done to those individuals and councillors who are fighting for the Mareeba Hospital. And well done to the many staff at the Mareeba Hospital who are struggling with the reality of knowing what is going on, but due to confidentiality agreements as part of their employment, are unable to speak out. As one of the major employers in town, it is quite the norm that we all have family, close friends or associates who work at the hospital. Luckily this is not Cairns or Brisbane - this is Mareeba, and in true regional style, we all stick together when the need arises. I have no doubt that the Mareeba community greatly values, respects and supports everyone who works at the Mareeba Hospital. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) can say whatever they like in the papers but until they come forward with how they are going to maintain services once the $2 million Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding is cut in October, nothing they say is believed. I too have heard about the potential staff losses and cuts to the ED department.
CHHHS CEO Claire Douglas’ statements about flexibed numbers also needs further clarification so that there is a clear understanding of exactly what this means and the implications to the ongoing funding for the hospital. The continual discussions of Atherton vs Mareeba Hospital need to be put to rest once and for all. Both towns are major centres and both towns need to be able to service the health needs of their communities. CHHHS and Queensland Health need to come clean and address the concerns of the Atherton and Mareeba communities about their local hospitals and the health services they will provide into the future. In light of all the recent media about the subject, surely it would be appropriate for CHHHS to host an information evening in Mareeba so that there can be clear, open and honest communication about how the Mareeba Hospital is going to maintain the current services once the $2 million COAG funding ceases in October. It would also relay honest communication about the future of both the Mareeba and Atherton regional hospitals. Until they do, the mistrust of this community will continue. Diana Pregl, Mareeba

ISN’T it frustrating when seemingly credible sources keep telling you things that you know just aren’t true? Consider the element carbon, for example. Carbon is abundant, versatile and essential to all life but these days we’re told its “poison”. Plants are green because of chlorophyll, commonly made by combining 55 carbon atoms with 72 of hydrogen, 5 of oxygen, 4 of nitrogen and one of magnesium. The chlorophyll then takes energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into the carbohydrates that are the basis of the food chain. Carbon dioxide is plant food and the plant world is short of it. Burning coal and oil benefits every living thing by returning natural CO2 to the biosphere from whence it came. The political Left’s seemingly irrational war on CO2 is really all about global taxation powers and a single world government to enforce the Left’s rules on everyone. Peter Campion Tolga
Pollies need to step up WITH lots of media reporting on the future funding of the Mareeba Hospital as the COAG agreement terminates in October, it is quite noticeable that elected members of the Federal parliament in both the seats of Kennedy and Leichhardt have been conspicuous by their absence on entering the debate as to how the Federal Government is going to fund the shortfall come October. There is no doubt that if the funding is not forthcoming from the Federal Government before October, then some services at the Mareeba District Hospital may change and not necessarily in the best interests of the general public and the staff
of the hospital. It is therefore critical that both Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch and Kennedy MP Bob Katter, as the Federal Government’s representatives of the people of Far North Queensland, take a major role in any future discussions to ensure the funding from the Federal Government for the retention of all existing services and staff at the Mareeba District Hospital are maintained in their entirety come October. It is well past the hour of midnight for both Federal parliamentarians in Far North Queensland to be seen and heard on the floor of parliament in Canberra demanding and ensuring the funding required to deliver all primary care health services at the Mareeba District Hospital is further enhanced or at a minimum maintained at existing levels come October. Denis McKinley, Mareeba
Cook Shire Council treats locals with contempt IT is refreshing to see two elected councillors (Robyn Holmes and John Dessmann) note concerns in their February monthly report to council regarding constituent unhappiness over contracts being awarded to outside contractors, and citing the example of two local contractors in the pest control field losing to a Cairns firm. Yet again, we see work going out of the shire at the expense of locals and money bleeding out of our shire. The town continues to die and suffer because council insists on employing non-locals. The council response to our association does not pass the pub test and treats our members with contempt. Unfortunately, the vast majority in council senior managerial positions making these decisions and appointments are non-locals. It’s about time the remaining five elected representatives stood up and represented their community. Maybe these five need to get around the town and ask the business people shutting up shop and the families leaving, why? The Cook Shire Ratepayers and Residents Association Inc.
Sounding out radio volunteers TO all interested persons of Ravenshoe and beyond, I have been thinking for quite a while now of starting a community radio station. This will need and take a lot of work and will take some years before we can be on air. What I’m looking for is dedicated volunteers to travel on this journey with me. The radio station will be run by volunteers either as announcers, office assistance, admin and fundraising. As I said earlier, this will be a long journey so I’m looking for people that are committed to the cause and prepared to put the time in. There is no promise of success but I’m sure all together we can achieve this great project. I need as many people that would be interested to get involved. You either email me with a support letter to davidarmstrong52@gmail.com or drop a snail mail to post office box 972 Ravenshoe, Queensland 4888. The more supporters we get, the more chance of making this a reality. David Armstrong Ravenshoe

Women’s Day Mareeba ladies finalists for rural women’s award As women all over the world celebrate International Women’s Day today, two inspirational and innovative women from Mareeba were last week announced as finalists in the prestigious Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award. Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Economic Development, Bill Byrne announced the three Queensland finalists last Friday. Mareeba ladies Tracey Beikoff, Rescue Swag founder and Chief Executive Officer and Jessica Fealy, accounting and communications business owner, were both named finalists. They join Jacqui Wilson-Smith, co-founder and chair of the Food and Agribusiness Network and Global Innovations Manager at McCormick from Eerwah Vale. “Each finalist is a tribute to Queensland agriculture, demonstrating a commitment to the development of rural industries and communities,” Mr Byrne said. Mr Byrne said a $10,000 project bursary is awarded to each state and territory winner in support of their project to benefit primary industries. “The recipients will partake in a programme of professional development, leadership support and networking opportunities,” he said. Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman said an outstanding selection of women had applied in 2017. “The Rural Women’s Award enables us to recognise the significant contribution women are making to ensure our primary industries are innovative, profitable and sustainable,” she said. The state winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in Brisbane on March 22. State and territory winners will then compete for the Australian Rural Women’s Award title in August 2017, with the national winner receiving an additional $10,000 to contribute to her project. With this year’s theme being #BeBoldForChange – Tracey and Jessica are certainly two ladies to watch.

Women’s Day
DEBBIE BOARDMAN
Opening her first business at the age of 57, Debbie is proof that it’s never too late to live your dream. Early this year, Debbie decided it was time to do what she loves everyday and with the support of her family, Love Them Flowers became a reality. After raising her children, Debbie discovered her love of floristry 10 years ago and has never looked back. She loves the smile that overcomes a person’s face when they receive a gift of flowers. “The most satisfying part of being a business owner is the completion of a gift of flowers and to hear the recipient say – wow they are beautiful and that’s just what I wanted,” said Debbie. Debbie prides herself on friendly service, value for money and most of all beautiful flowers that everyone will love.
cr. ANGELA TOPPIN
International Women’s Day is annually celebrated and this year the theme is “Be Bold for Change”. International Women’s Day has always been an important catalyst and vehicle for change, and over the decades there have been many brave women who have challenged gender parity and achieved breakthroughs. This year is a “call to action” for each one of us to “be bold” and take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. By collaborating we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential to effect change the world over. Thank you to the many women who have “lead the way” and achieved success in all aspects of life, society, family and work. I would like to acknowledge and honour these women for supporting, inspiring and empowering other women.

Millie has been affiliated with many Tableland schools as well as The Mareeba Theatre Group and has supported as many as five choirs at the one time. This saw Millie receive the 2010 TRC Senior Cultural Award for her dedication for the arts on the Tablelands. 15 years ago Millie saw the need for a new style of music teaching to be brought to the area that would see young people enjoy learning piano, organ, guitar, ukelele, violin and voice lessons to students from as young as three. The success of The Music House stems from offering students tailored lessons from assisting students to prepare for AMEB examinations to preparing students to perform for their local community or just for their own satisfaction. Millie strongly believes music assists our cognitive abilities and believes all people would benefit from learning music. You can never have enough music in your life.

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt in another medium sized bowl. Slowly add dry ingredients to the egg mixture until well combined. 5. Pour the batter into the pan and spread evenly. 6. Once set, add chocolate chips and shortening for topping to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on 15 second increments until the chocolate and shortening are melted and smooth. 10. Spread chocolate into an even layer over the fudge. 11. The chocolate should cool quickly and become firm. Cut into bars.

LOCAL RUGBY LEAGUE 2017 Atherton primed for strong season THE 2017 Cairns District Rugby League premiership season kicks off this weekend in what will be the Atherton Senior Roosters’ 99th year of competition. After a resounding 2016, which saw the Roosters play semi-finals and make the leap as genuine contenders, this season sees the club ready to surprise again. Several players will be missing from last year’s side but the club is confident their mixture of local youth and some new, experienced faces is enough to build a solid unit for a very competitive season. Second year first-grade coach Dean Howard has had a busy off-season looking to recruit some big men to fill the prop forward gap at the club. “Negotiations to bring a couple of quality props to the team have been ongoing and we now have some late arrivals which will be a huge bonus,” Howard said. “Our player numbers at training started slowly but are now increasing and we can

expect to be the big improvers in all grades as the season rolls along. Pre-season trial match form wasn’t good for us but we now know where the improvement is needed.” Jamie Blain (reserves) and Greg Rockley (under 19) also have their second stint as club coaches. Plans for the Roosters’ centenary next year are continuing, part of which includes Martin Grandelis’ book detailing the entire history of the Red, White and Blues. In other news, the Queensland Rugby League have advised that the Senior Roosters are one of only 12 regional clubs selected to feature in the upcoming XXXX Gold State of Origin Collectable Can campaign. The first-grade premiership season for the Roosters kicks off against archrivals Mareeba Gladiators this Saturday night at Davies Park.

EACHAM Junior Rugby League is set to enjoy continued growth in 2017 with a fifth club added to the competition. Innisfail club the Cowboys will join established local teams Ravenshoe, Malanda, Atherton and Herberton. The Cowboys bring players in age groups from under 7’s to under 14’s and gives Eacham continued player growth. All clubs are experiencing strong numbers, particularly in the younger grades and the league may include under 9 and under 11 grades in the competition. Also new for this year is the inclusion of an Eacham under 17 representative team to play in the Cairns Junior Rugby League competition on Friday nights. Numbers for the Eacham women’s team are also expected to rise as they proved to be a real powerhouse in 2016. Eacham is looking to have several players selected in the Peninsula and North Queensland representative sides. The Eacham league promotes a family friendly environment that provides fun, fitness and enjoyment for all involved and is backed up by a “Safeplay Code”. The first competition games for 2017 begin on March 18.

Home semi final for Atherton Atherton have secured a home semi-final after a confidence-building win in the final round of the competition last Saturday. With the two-day match reduced to 40 overs after a wash-out the previous week, the boys were keen to have a hit and fortunately, rain skirted around to allow a full day's play. Sent in by Barron, Gerard Fox and Paul Nasser put on a 43 run first-wicket partnership, with Paul going on to score 63 runs and celebrate his third 50 for the season. Pete Sceresini consolidated the start scoring with 31 in a 62 run partnership with Nasser. Atherton closed their innings 7-163. Barron, batting a man down, took the game to the wire and fell just short to be all-out for 160 with one ball to go. A valiant bowling effort under pressure by Dan Parnell (4-58) and Tom Boorman (2-39), plus a great run-out by Nasser and Fox got the boys home in a nail-biter. Atherton will play Norths at Loder Park in the semi-final match this Saturday and Sunday, from 10am each day.
Finals double header for Mareeba juniors
After the final round of the regular Far North Cricket competition Mareeba have secured a finals spot in both the Under 14 and Under 16 grades. Both games are scheduled to play at Kerribee Park, Mareeba, with the Under 14’s from 8am and the Under 16’s from 1pm, on both days. The Mareeba Cricket Club invites all families, supporters and sponsors to come along and cheer on the boys in a huge weekend of local cricket. In last weekend’s matches, the Mareeba’s under 12’s

Mareeba’s under 16’s were defeated by Norths in First Innings Points – 11/154 to 3/228 and 6/96 to 5/192. Mareeba’s best batters were Kobe Martin (26), Chris Adams (33), Wade Peace (25), Richard Thompson (24) and Braydon Olufson (25), with best bowler going to Jett Prien with 1/15 and 3/23.

No stopping super sailor
GOING HARD: Local sailor Kristen Wadley puts in some training with her dinghy out at Lake Tinaroo.
AFTER six world titles, five national titles and 10 state titles, Tablelands teen sailor Kristen Wadley is still hungry for more. The 15-year-old has a list of achievements as long as her arm, including being named Queensland Junior Sport Star of the Year last December, the same month she took out the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne racing a Laser 4.7 dinghy. And now she will vie for international glory once again, after being selected for the Women's Laser 4.7 World Youth Championships in Belgium on July 16. It marks a new era for Kristen, who only switched from smaller BIC boats in February last year and now faces another level of competition.
“Lasers are bigger boats, so your movements are more aggressive,” she said. “The people around you have more experience. They’re older, so the gap closes between first and last.” Kristen has already had a busy start to the year, winning the overall National Title in the Women's Division at the Laser 4.7 Nationals in Adelaide and the overall Women's Division at the Australian Youth Championships in January. After the World Youth Championships in Belgium, the Year 11 student will back it up by returning to one of her favourite events in Italy – the Open BIC World Championships at the end of July. A multiple world champion in BIC-class din-
ghies, Kristen will compete together with her siblings Breanne and Travis. “I’m excited to go back to racing BICs because I’ve missed them,” she said. Coached by her father Roger, Kristen regularly trains at Lake Tinaroo and loves the “shifty” conditions. “It’s taught me to be prepared for anything,” she said. “When I get down to the ocean, it’s more a steady wind which is easier to sail in.” The youngster also trains once a month with the Queensland Sailing Team in Brisbane and captains her high school sailing team. “Once you’re out there on the water, it’s all up to you…It’s a lot more of an individual sport,”
she said. “You always learn something new at each regatta. Nothing’s ever the same in sailing, it’s an open sport. Anything and everything can happen so you’ve got to be prepared for it. “I’ve met some really great people and have friends all over the world I keep in contact with.” Coming up this month, Kristen will compete at the Tasmanian State Laser Titles before heading to Mooloolaba for the Queensland State Laser Titles. She will then contest the final two weekend rounds of the North Queensland High School Team Sailing Championships.
Local triathlete powers ahead FIGHTING FIT: Yungaburra’s Megan Hendry has received her Silver Ironman All World Athlete Status.
PAGE 30 The Express, Wednesday, March 8, 2017
MEGAN Hendry is addicted to triathlons. The Yungaburra auxiliary fighter received her Silver Ironman All World Athlete Status earlier this year, placing her in the top five per cent of her age group. That comes after her efforts at the Cairns Ironman 70.3 last year, in which she placed well enough to contest the World Championships last September at the Sunshine Coast. But Hendry said she’s not slowing down any time soon, with plans to compete in the Ironman 70.3 in Busselton, Western Australia this May before returning to Cairns for her first full Ironman in June. The Atherton café worker trains on average between 15 hours and 21 hours a week, running, riding or swimming her way across the Tablelands – in between shifts as a firie. From time to time, she also sneaks in a workout at Yungaburra Boxing Gym. “It’s interesting trying to juggle it all,” she said. “Some weeks can run super smoothly and other
weeks it’s very much “What’s my important session of today? Let’s get that one done”. If I don’t do the next one it’s not as bad. “It’s a lot of early mornings and late nights.” Hendry won gold at last October’s biennial Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games, blitzing the open women’s category with a time of 1:06.23 and also finishing fifth overall against both male and female competitors. As part of the warm up to her two Ironman events, Hendry will also compete in the Lake Eacham Triathlon on March 26 and the Yungaburra Triathlon in April. “I find it a lot easier to train when I have a race coming up because you know you can put in the effort now and it will be rewarded at some point,” she said. “That’s a massive motivator for me. This year it’s all about Ironman in Cairns and purely just wanting to finish.”

Angels shoot down Bees
FAST AND FURIOUS: Luke Trabucco made his debut for the Mareeba Bulls premiers against Leichhardt in their FFA Cup clash last Saturday night.
Bulls trample Lions in FFA Cup clash THE Mareeba Bulls have enjoyed an emphatic FFA Cup regional round victory after blitzing Leichhardt 4-0 at Borzi Park. Fielding a largely new-look squad, the Bulls looked comfortable in the first half as David Ruiz scored two goals alongside Nic Tallarico to go 3-0 up by half time. Leichhardt couldn’t seem to respond before Bulls veteran David Srhoj, making his return to the premiers after several years away, came on late in the second half to put another in the back of the net and close out the match 4-0. Despite the big win, Bulls coach Alex Srhoj admitted it was a tough game.
“4-0 probably didn’t reflect the score line,” he said. “But for the first game of the year, I’m pretty happy.” Srhoj said the win was a confidence boost for the squad but there was still “a long way to go”. “We’re only just scratching the surface of what these boys are capable of,” he said. “But we’re not getting carried away with one good performance.” The Bulls will face Stratford away in their next FFA Cup clash this Saturday, before they host Stratford at Borzi Park the following weekend in the FNQ Premier League season opener.
Tough talk spurs on derby LET the mind games begin. Mareeba Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen has vowed his side will be fired up for this Saturday’s home clash against Atherton, thanks to some helpful trash talk. Ingebrigtsen has used comments made by Roosters coach Dean Howard about Mareeba in last week’s paper as inspiration for the derby grudge match. Responding to his side’s 52-4 trial match loss against Mareeba on February 25, Howard said he wasn’t worried about the opposition and would have his side ready to roll this weekend. “They seem confident, from what they’ve said in the paper,” Ingebrigtsen said. “We’ve used that as a bit of ammunition, so that will be our motivation, to play off the back of that. “It’s fired the boys up.” Ingebrigtsen said the Gators had been “training the house down”.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
“We’ve just got to keep working really hard on our fitness and keep improving,” he said. “I think the key will be ball control. If we control the ball, we control the game.” Ingebrigtsen said it would be interesting to see how both sides managed the interchange rule, which was unlimited in trial matches but is now restricted to 10 players during the season. “That’ll test out how fit we are and Atherton are,” he said. “I think Atherton are a lot less fitter than us.” The Gators thrived under a boisterous home crowd in their previous game against the Roosters and Ingebrigtsen hoped for a repeat of it this Saturday at Davies Park. “That was awesome to play in front of last game,” he said. The A-grade clash will kick off at Davies Park from 6pm.
INTENSE: Acting from last Thursday night’s Men’s Summer League match between Blue Angels and Killer Bees.
The Blue Angels have made light work of Killer Bees in Mareeba Basketball’s Men’s Summer League after a thumping 39-18 victory last Thursday night. In what was a fiery round three clash, Angels took the lead early in the first quarter, racing out to 6-0 as Bees struggled to get points on the scoreboard. Down 15-4 by the start of the second quarter, it was looking like an uphill battle for Bees as Angels captain Tyson Tatti and Jeremy Mackay terrorised the D, pushing out the score to 19-4 with six minutes to go. But an energetic Bees outfit refused to give up, Roger Poux stepping in with a neat layup from the far side of the net to start clawing back points. Tatti responded with a layup of his own before Poux struck again with a three pointer to bring his side within 10 points of Angels. It was false hope though as Mackay struck again, producing several outstanding plays which gave Angels a handy
25-9 lead by half-time while poor shooting plagued the Bees. An early flurry of points from Poux and Charles Socie had Bees making up lost ground in the third quarter, giving them a sniff at 26-15. Frustration started to plague both sides and poor discipline caused several fouls. Blue Angels held their nerve though and resumed piling on a steady stream of points, Bees having no with their shooting. Scores remained unchanged at 37-16 for the first six minutes of the final quarter despite the physicality of the match. Mackay broke the deadlock with an intercept and two points before Bees hit back with just seconds to go to close out the game 39-18. In the other matches of the week, Stingrays defeated the Green Hornets 56-37 and Ciggy Butts were too good for Barras, triumphing 42-28. Red Devils forfeited to Spare Parts.
