CONSTRUCTION of a $120 million solar farm near Georgetown will begin this week, adding to a wave of planned Far North renewable energy projects worth more than $700 million. The Kidston Solar Project will eventually feature 540,000 solar panels generating 50MW of electricity. That translates to 145,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of power generation per annum, which is enough to power 27,000 homes. Owned by Sydney-based company Genex

Power, construction of the solar farm will be done by 85 workers at its peak, to be recruited from Einasleigh, Georgetown, Townsville and the Tablelands. Genex co-founder and executive director Simon Kidston said when complete by the end of next year, the solar farm will be the fourth largest in Australia. “Because we’re quite a long way west of Townsville, we’ve got the highest solar resource of any solar project in the country,” he said. “We’re lucky we’ve got a substation and a transmission line that goes from our site all the

way to Townsville so we’re tapping into that infrastructure.” In a further boost to the region’s economy, Genex has instructed head contractor UGL to preference local sub-contractors where possible on the project. Mr Kidston said Genex had reached an agreement with the State Government for their solargenerated electricity to feed in to the wider grid. “Having a sunny location means we get a huge number of megawatt hours, which is what we sell into the national electricity market,” he said. “Far North Queensland really is a natural

place for solar development.” The solar farm, which is being built on the site of the historic Kidston Gold Mine named after former Premier William Kidston, will eventually be joined by a second, larger solar farm pumping out 270MW of power and a $300 million pumped storage hydro project. Mr Kidston said it was too early to say when the next two projects would begin, but Genex had told its shareholders they will have enough funding secured by the end of next year.

Jon Gambino, 12, and sister Breanna, 11, marvel at the mango they’ve entered into the KP Mango Competition.

Mrs Gambino said if she won the competition, she would donate the prize money to the Sandra Cadorin Wish Foundation, named after the popular local woman who lost her battle with brain cancer in 2013. Held annually by The Express, Total Food Network and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association (MDFVGA), the competition is open to all Tablelands farmers and backyard growers in a bid to see who can grow the region’s heaviest Kensington Pride mango. All mangoes entered must be photographed on electronic scales, clearly displaying its weight and viewed by a member of The Express team or MDFVGA president Joe Moro. Mangoes must not be tampered with in any way. Entries close on January 31 with the winner to be announced at the end of the harvest season. First place will win $500, second $300 and third $200. All mangoes will be retained by The Express for verification and consumption.

MANGO munchers, meet your competition. The Gambino family have submitted the first entry in The Express’ KP Mango Competition, coming in at a respectable 943g. But Giovanna Gambino, whose husband Sam and fatherin-law John own Marlin Mangoes just outside Mareeba, vowed there would be bigger and better entries to come. The mango was discovered inside the farm’s packing shed as a busy fruit picking season gets underway for local growers. Mrs Gambino said the secret to growing a big mango was simple. “It’s not just a six week process like everyone thinks, it’s bloody hard work throughout the year,” she said. “It’s making sure the trees get what they need.” Mrs Gambino’s children, Jon and Breanna, said they loved being able to munch on a tonne of mangoes over the school holidays, as well as helping out their parents on the farm.

Rotary FNQ Tablelands Inner Wheel Club member Desiree Siemon helped raised money for sick Mareeba teen Lachlan Shorey.

A MAREEBA teenager has been touched by an outpouring of community generosity as he battles an ongoing heart condition. Lachlan Shorey, 17, was diagnosed with ventricular bigeminy back in August and has since had two failed surgeries in Brisbane to try and fix the problem. With a cure up to a decade away, Lachlan has been forced to go on costly medication to try and mitigate his condition. But the Mareeba community has rallied behind him, raising more than $2000 through a Mareeba State High School charity car wash and local line dancing club fundraiser to help pay for his ongoing medical costs. Now, members of Rotary’s FNQ Tablelands Inner Wheel Club have banded together to raise a further $285 for Lachlan. Club member Desiree Siemon said all 12 club members pitched in money for La-

chlan at their breakup party last week. “Our group has just started, we haven’t been going for very long…and our aim is to give back to the community and to help people who are in need,” she said. Lachlan said he was overwhelmed by the amount of generosity to help with his treatment. “It’s pretty touching and unexpected… It’s a very supportive community,” he said. “None of my family can believe it. We didn’t expect as much as we got. The support’s just been phenomenal.” Ventricular bigeminy is a condition in which the patient suffers from an irregular heartbeat, with symptoms including dizziness, nausea, tiredness and shortness of breath.

Council supports ‘One Night Stand’ TABLELANDS Regional Council has tentatively backed a potential bid to host one of Australia’s most iconic youth concerts. Run every year by radio station Triple J, the One Night Stand offers a regional town in Australia the chance to host a star-studded, drug and alcohol free concert for one night only. Past host towns include Mildura, Dubbo, Alice Springs and Tumby Bay with acts like Illy, RÜFÜS, Flume, John Butler Trio and Birds of Tokyo performing. Only members of the public can apply for their town to host the One Night Stand, but council support is key to the application progressing further. While expressions of interest for 2017 have not yet opened, council voted at last Thursday’s meeting to provide “in principle support” to any potential submission to host the concert within the Tablelands shire. Division 6 councillor Bronwyn Voyce, who put forward the idea, said

the concert would help youth re-engage with their community. “We lose youth to the cities because there’s not enough fun things happening here and a lot of bands come out of the regions so it could inspire them as well,” she said. “There are also opportunities to leverage off the concert and have a raft of events around that.” Atherton could be one possible town to host the concert, given its size, accommodation options and choice of suitable venues nearby like Tolga Park or Roosters Stadium. Cr Voyce said if the Tablelands was chosen to host a One Night Stand, there would be economic benefits for local businesses in the region. “There’s people from all over Australia who do an annual pilgrimage to the various One Night Stand locations,” she said. “Who wouldn’t want a tropical holiday during winter? You would probably get some two to three night stays in the

region from it.” This year’s One Night Stand in Geraldton attracted an audience of about 15,000 while Mildura got about 10,000 people at their concert in 2014. Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella also lent his support to the proposal, believing the concert could be held at

any one of several towns in the shire. “It’s something that would be fantastic for the region, not just for the people within our shire that could attend but it would be bring a lot of tourists in,” he said. “It would benefit businesses in the area.”

Georgetown solar power project From Page 1 Genex’s solar farm forms part of the State Government’s “Solar 150” program, which aims to have 150MW of solar power generation in Queensland. The company received $8.9 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for its solar farm, which is run in conjunction with the Solar 150 program. Genex’s solar farm follows a swag of green

projects for the Far North currently planned or underway, including MSF Sugar’s $75 million power station, the $380 million Mt Emerald Wind Farm and two solar farms at Lakeland worth $42.5 million and $220 million respectively. Etheridge Shire mayor Warren Devlin said he was excited by Genex’s sizeable investment in the area. “I’m very much a supporter of the renewable energy industry and I welcome Genex with

open arms,” he said. “It certainly will give business confidence… There’s a handful of locals from Georgetown who work with Genex now and I believe there are local contractors having meetings with them in the next couple of weeks.” Mr Devlin said council has been “working closely with the renewable energy sector” to encourage investment and job creation within the shire, as well as developing tourism and agriculture.

Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the move was justified. “It’s just making it a lot easier so council can operate a lot more efficiently,” he said. “Many councils throughout Queensland operate like this and it’s just a matter of being able to give our staff a lot more time to devote to the applications that come through.” A Regional Land Use Planning Standing Committee will also be established to debate any

“It could be a three hour meeting, it could be a five hour meeting just depending on the issues that come through.” The move follows Mareeba Shire Council’s decision to switch to monthly meetings in July, which was done to increase the number of items discussed on each agenda listing. Cr Paronella said the meeting date change would be advertised in local media to make residents aware of the change. Like ordinary meetings, planning committee meetings will also be open to the public. The first ordinary meeting will be held on January 25 followed by a planning committee meeting on February 9.

planning matters on the second Thursday of every month. Development applications have a statutory timeframe of 20 business days in which to be processed, hence the need for a planning committee meeting as they may be too late for the ordinary meeting. Despite taking planning matters out of the ordinary meeting agenda, Cr Paronella said it would likely not reduce how long ordinary meetings run for nor the number of items to be discussed. “They could maybe be a little longer because the issues that may come up on the planning committee meeting days could be included on the ordinary meeting days because they usually take a little bit more discussion,” he said.

Air support key in fire fight AIR power proved critical in helping to contain a spate of bushfires that engulfed Koah last week. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Western Command station officer Darryl Chaplain said a Bell 412 and Squirrel helicopter were instrumental in giving firefighters on the ground a reprieve, with water bombing and aerial mapping to identify how far the fires had spread. “It would not have been brought under control so well without that air support. It was crucial,” he said. “It supported the ground crews by taking a lot of heat out of the fire so they can just go in there and mop it up. They didn’t have to face walls of flames and so were able to go into much calmer fire conditions.” On the ground, firefighters contained the blaze by creating fire breaks, backburning and “blackening out” areas, which involves wetting the area 30m inside a fire break to prevent fires spreading further. The fires, which broke out on December 3, temporarily forced the Kennedy Highway to be shut the next day as flames approached the road. Since then, up to 15 trucks and about 50 firefighters from stations across the Far North worked around the clock to desperately contain the fires in the first few days. Mr Chaplain praised the mammoth effort by volunteer, auxiliary and full-time crews, as well as an incident management team brought up from south-east Queensland to assist with co-ordinating the wide-

scale operation. “That’s why you needed that management team to look after all those crews and provide food, refreshments, fuel, water and all those things,” he said. “We had crews from as far away as Mena Creek north to Wonga and all the southern Tablelands like Millstream. We draw from all areas to give support to the local brigades who were there initially, which was Speewah, Koah, Kuranda and Davies Creek. “The whole organisation works as one when it comes to the big battles.” Mr Chaplain said about 10 properties were saved around the Clohesy River area, but a vehicle, caravan and shed were destroyed. No-one was injured. “There were lots of nervous people on the western side of the Kennedy Highway at Koah because there were lots of subdivisions there that could have been under attack,” he said. Mr Chaplain said he was not surprised by the veracity of the bushfire, with low humidity, high heat, strong winds and thick, rugged bushland essentially creating the perfect storm. Last weekend, firefighters continued to monitor a large fire at Lamb’s Head at the back of Dinden National Park. “Obviously there’s fires all over the state, so we’re just watching, managing and putting resources into the right locations as they’re needed to bring them under control,” Mr Chaplain said.

Welfare centre closes for Christmas TABLELAND residents relying on welfare support are being urged to take note of changes over the Christmas break. All service centres and most phone lines providing Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services will be closed from December 26 to 28 and again on January 2. But Department of Human Services general manager Hank Jongen said self-service options would continue to be available during the holiday period. “The department’s Express Plus mobile apps, phone self-service lines and online ac-

counts through myGov, are the easiest way to do your business with us over the Christmas and New Year break,” he said. “You will be able to check your reporting dates, update your details and report your earnings quickly and easily with these options. You can also lodge some Medicare claims this way.” Automatic payments will not be delayed by the holidays, but some people may receive their payments earlier than usual. “You may need to budget carefully so this payment lasts until your next payment is due,” Mr Jongen said.

“If you are due to report on a holiday closure date, you may need to report early. Your payment will be made after you have reported.” Welfare recipients can check their reporting date on their reporting statement available on either their myGov and Centrelink online accounts or phone self-service. “While your reporting date may be different, the assessment period remains the same. You still need to report estimates of earnings and other changes for your normal 14 day assessment period,” Mr Jongen said. “There are no changes to child support ar-

rangements, however payments made after December 22 may be delayed by public holidays. “People can continue to lodge Medicare claims at their doctor’s office or using self-service. Critical services for Medicare providers such as organ donor and PBS authorities will remain available over the Christmas/New Year period.” People can transfer funds to their BasicsCard throughout the holiday period by using self-service or calling 1800 132 594 between 8am-5pm. BasicsCard balances can be checked at any time by calling 1800 057 111.

Locals try to save hall Will Evelyn Pioneer Hall be saved by local residents?

A group of locals have launched an 11th hour bid to try and save Evelyn’s ageing hall. Tablelands Regional Council was due to a make a decision on selling off Evelyn Pioneer Hall and its associated land by tender at last Thursday’s meeting, but will now delay that decision until next year after a last minute plea from a group of locals. Division 2 councillor Annette Haydon said she had received two emails, three letters and several phone calls from residents in the Evelyn area who have asked for time to form a community group that could potentially take over the hall from council. The hall, which has been closed since March, needs a whopping $87,500 to bring it up to scratch with the kitchen area infested with termites. It was not hired by anyone in the last financial year. Council will make a decision on the hall’s sale early next year but if it decides to go to tender, the group of locals would be required to bid against other interested parties to purchase the hall. However, the vote delay gives council officers more time to consult with

residents interested in banding together to save the hall and seeing what proposals might come forward. “It’s a good idea to delay the vote because it gives people time to get themselves organised,” Cr Haydon said. “We’ll give them a couple of months to see if they can come up with something.” Cr Haydon said locals she had spoken to hoped younger people in their community would back their move to save the hall. “I do understand its ageing infrastructure and will cost a lot to fix, but if someone can revive it, I think it’d be great,” she said. “If that’s what the Evelyn community want, then I’m happy to support them.” Former hall caretaker Bob Kelso, who still lives next door to the building, previously told The Express he supported council selling it off given its lack of use and dilapidated state. The closest hall to Evelyn is Ravenshoe Town Hall and The Mountains Institute, which are both 15km away. Council will make a decision on the hall in the first quarter of 2017.

Priors New rodeo boss continues legacy Creek feedback wanted

SLOW and steady will be the mantra for incoming Mareeba District Rodeo Association president Darryl Chaplain. The father-of-two was elected president at November’s committee annual general meeting and takes over from long-time president Jim Blakeney, who retired after 32 years in the job. “The rodeo’s always been a big part of our family. My father was on the committee before me and my grandfather was here working many years ago as well,” Mr Chaplain, a former rodeo association vice-president, said. “It’s in our blood basically, as it was with Jim’s family.” Mr Chaplain, who is also vice-president of the Walkamin Country Music Club, said he loved the atmosphere of the rodeo, having been Kerribee Park’s arena announcer for the past 33 years. “It’s something we want to keep going for our children’s children,” he said. “The rodeo committee is a team that manages the event with a lot of volunteer help on our big weekend.” Mr Chaplain is just the 12th man to be president in the rodeo’s 67 year history. While some past presidents had served two separate stints in the top job, Mr Blakeney has been the longest serving president after first taking the reins in 1984. He will remain on the committee and stay on with wife Shirely as caretakers of Kerribee Park. “The time was right to give it away and I’m sure Darryl will do the right thing,” Mr Blakeney said. “The president doesn’t run the show, he guides it...And we’re still fortunate that we have individual volunteers and volunteer organisations that help us.” Short of a few tweaks, Mr Chaplain said he wouldn’t be looking to make “wholesale changes” to the Mareeba Rodeo. “My strategy is to help the committee take

what we have now, which has been a pretty good recipe over the years…and just enhance it a little bit,” he said. “We’re not here to lose our history and heritage…If you mess too much with what we’ve got, it’s bound to fail.” Mr Chaplain said his primary focus would be on attracting more locals to the rodeo, overseeing the construction of 10 new steel grandstands for Kerribee Park’s main arena and installing a new PA system and lights hopefully in time for next

year’s event. “That will see a huge improvement in comfort and quality of performance with sound and lighting,” he said. “There’s a lot of Mareeba people who may not have been to the rodeo for many years. We want them to come and see the rodeo and what it’s grown into.” Mr Chaplain also thanked his wife Coral and two sons Kurt and Dean for their support in his new role.

LOCAL residents are being urged to give their feedback on a proposed new development for Atherton’s town centre. Consultation on the Priors Creek Master Plan will begin late next month, giving a chance for business operators, community groups and individuals to have their say on the draft plan. The master plan, which features a mix of trails, gardens and residential, recreational and commercial space will be a staged development likely to be carried out over at least the next 10 years. The precinct would also pay homage to the area’s history with a number of old railway lines running through it. The possibility of moving Atherton’s existing visitor centre from Silo Rd to the proposed precinct has also been flagged in the plan. “Council considers it important that all members of the community have the opportunity to comment on the master plan and we will therefore defer the consultation until after the Christmas period,” said Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella.

Mareeba economy ‘Racing Ahead’ THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce released its annual economic publication on Monday, Racing Ahead, with a focus on some big-ticket developments. The publication gives an economic snapshot of Mareeba and the region for 2016-17 financial year, with a range of informative stories detailing growth, future developments and opportunities for investors. Re-elected Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said Mareeba and the region had continued to flourish and there was a lot more on the horizon. “This publication provides an insight into what’s happening and what is going to happen in the area,” he said. “Amongst others it features the wonderful new investment that is occurring at Mt Emerald, the new drag strip at Springmount and overall, highlights many other future developments and opportunities.” In further development news, the expanding transport hub at Mareeba Industrial Park is also featured, highlighting the recent opening of Lindsay Australia’s new $9.5 million facility and the multi-million dollar Blenners Transport depot. “Along with the Mareeba Airport expansion, there is a lot more potential for further development at the industrial park, which will continue to bring benefits to the community into the future,” Mr Moro said. “It really is a great time to live and do business in Mareeba,” 2016 has been a big year for the chamber, who relocated and joined forces with the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Information Centre and together appointed an operations manager to oversee the two organisations. “By working together we can provide an integrated approach to the delivery of internal organisation services to our respective members and external services to the community, visitors and potential investors,” Mr Moro said. 2016 also saw a local tourism taskforce established to support Tropical Tablelands Tourism and in 2017, a new campaign, “Visitors are vital to the community”, will be launched to enhance the potential of tourism in the area. Many other exciting initiatives in the pipeline will also be launched which includes the “Spend a Redback’ shop local campaign, as well as looking into the possibility of creating monthly Thursday late night shopping in Mareeba. “It’s an exciting time with lots happening and the chamber is looking forward to the future and working with the business community to ensure a resilient and prosperous future,” Mr Moro said. “Mareeba is literally racing ahead.” The publication will be distributed over the next couple of weeks, or you can grab a copy at the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Information Centre.

Mareeba man benefits from unit A NEW unit at Townsville Hospital is benefiting people as far north as Mareeba. Local man Andrew Anning underwent cataract surgery on both his eyes at the hospital’s new $12.1 Planned Procedure Unit (PPU) last week. Mr Anning, who also had both his retinas reattached last Tuesday, suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumours to form on nerve tissue and other damage such as vision loss.

Mr Anning’s mum Diane said the opening of the PPU, which features two extra operating theatres and 22 beds, meant it was far more convenient for the family to travel to Townsville instead of Brisbane for any operations. “It’s a lot better…Andrew started coming down for treatment between four and six months ago,” she said. “We were lucky we didn’t have to go to Brisbane.” Mr Anning and his family are expected return home either today or tomorrow.

Health service downplays funding dispute THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) has called for calm over a funding spat between Mareeba Shire Council and the State Government. Council wrote to Health Minister Cameron Dick last week, demanding he and Department of Health director-general Michael Walsh meet with Mayor Tom Gilmore to address concerns over future funding for Mareeba Hospital. Cr Gilmore said council was concerned the State Government would not make up a shortfall of about $2 million a year when the existing Federal Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding agreement runs out next October. "Mareeba's population has reached a level where it will no longer qualify for additional hospital funding from the Federal Government beyond October 2017, through the COAG agreement,” he said. “The hospital is crucial to this community and we are very concerned after seeing what appears to be a reduction in services. We need to know what the intentions of the State Government are.” In a statement made last Friday, CHHHS chief operating officer Tina Chinery said she had contacted Cr Gilmore to offer reassurance that there are no

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

changes to services at Mareeba Hospital. While Ms Chinery said the specific COAG funding for Mareeba Hospital was “not a significant portion” of what CHHHS provides to support services there, she was still concerned about how to bridge the funding gap once the existing COAG agreement runs out. “The Mareeba Hospital provides a range of important hospital and community services for the people of the Tablelands and the Health Service is committed to working with the Department of Health to establish a solution to ensure the sustainable future of the hospital,” she said. Mr Dick said he was “more than happy” to meet with Cr Gilmore, but refused to say whether the State Government would pick up the slack over the expected Federal funding shortfall. “I am very disappointed that the Federal Government has continued its cuts to health by stealth in refusing to renew this longstanding funding arrangement,” he said. “This cut is yet another example of the Turnbull Government dudding regional Queenslanders, this time in Mareeba.”

End of an era for ‘The Shoe Store’ In 1932, just as the depression was really starting to hit North Queensland, two enterprising sisters, Lilian and Vi Pink, decided that Atherton needed a shop that specialised in shoes. So they registered the name “The Shoe Store” and went into business. They hired a man called Ben George to run it. Ron Weare as a lad worked for them too. But when Mr George was called up to go to war in 1939, Mr Weare ran the store until he himself deployed to Dutch New Guinea and Bougainville from 1942 to 1946. After the war, Mr Weare worked at The Shoe Store in Main St, Atherton for Mr Sampson, who then owned the Jewellery Shop and The Shoe Store together. He worked for them until 1948 when Mr Sampson sold to Afton Westacott. In 1950, Jack Kershaw, who was Mr Westacott’s and Mr Weare’s accountant, became the new owners of The Shoe Store. They were in business together for 21 years. Greg Weare started working in the family business when he was just 15 and in 1971, Mr Kershaw sold his part in the business and retired to the Gold Coast. This left an opening for Greg to join the business as a partner with his father. Due to illness in 1999, Greg retired from the business and his wife Gail has continued on to this day. “I was quite relieved after I made the decision to close down the store, it’s not an easy decision to make after spending all the time here and basically on my own since Greg got ill,” Mrs Weare said. “Greg and I would like to thank the community and all of our clients that have come in over the years and I would like to make special mention to the wonderful staff that have worked for us in that time. “We will never forget you.”

A regular performer at Tamworth, Holland said next year would be a huge opportunity to further her blossoming career. “You’ve got a good network and the people who are connected with the competition are all there to help you, like Tom Inglis and Cheryl Burns. You’ve got these incredible contacts at your fingertips,” she said. “It’s also about your shows. The competition counts country superstars Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan, and James Blundell amongst just some of its famous past winners. Now living in Townsville, Holland said she always had a soft spot for Mareeba and was proud to represent her home town. “I’m always thinking about my home town when I’m on stage,” she said. “I haven’t been back up there for ages… I’m definitely keen to come home and do a show or two and catch up with everybody.”

Blenners Transport has reached another milestone in the company’s history with the opening of their seventh depot in Mareeba late last month. Led by company owners Les and Judy Blennerhassett, Blenners Transport is one of North Queensland's largest familyowned road and rail transport operators. Through constant customer commitment and continual striving for excellence, Blenners now boast a fleet of 164 trucks and 20 rail containers. After 28 successful years specialising in refrigerated freight, Mr Blennerhassett is still always available to talk to customers directly on his mobile. “We have been looking to open in Mareeba for some time and with the amount of loyal clients we have in the district it’s the best thing we ever did,” said Mr Blennerhassett, who is also the company’s managing director.

“The facility will benefit farmers enormously and I am happy to invest in Mareeba as we see this region as a progressive one. “After Cyclone Larry we decided to move onto the Tablelands and diversify into other products and crops and now of course, we have a massive mango base here. “We spent just over $2.2 million on this facility. We’re a family company and will be around for a long time.” The newly-built Mareeba depot hosts five loading docks, 220 pallet space cold rooms and ante-room, allowing Blenners to cater for produce at varying temperatures during loading. And with Mareeba-based trucks and drivers, Blenners now have the capability to service local businesses directly with freight from Brisbane and southern states.

Blenners are proud members of TruckSafe and are safe food accredited to ensure the safety and quality of transported food products. Blenners are audited under NHVAS and are leaders in fatigue and chain of responsibility compliance, ensuring their drivers are safe, legal and taking care of your freight at all times. If Blenners Transport is your freight solution, the experienced and friendly Mareeba team would love an opportunity to meet with you. They always stick by their motto, “We go the extra mile”. You can find Blenners’ Mareeba depot on the corner of Martin Tenni Drive and Thora Cleland Drive in the Mareeba Industrial Park. MAREEBA DEPOT NOW OPEN Farmers welcome Blenners to Mareeba

Local farmers check out the new Blenners Transport depot in Mareeba at their recent grand opening afternoon.

TABLELANDS farmers have welcomed Blenners’ new $2.2 million depot to Mareeba with open arms. Depot manager John Law said their official opening late last month at Mareeba Industrial Park had been well supported by growers, delighted there was now a local facility to transport produce directly to southern markets. “It’s been very well accepted. There were a lot of growers here,” he said. “What they liked about our depot was that it has all state-of-the-art equipment with the latest technology.” Blenners’ Mareeba depot features five cold rooms capable of carrying 220 pallets in total and an ante-room, meaning farmers will no longer have to rely on Blenners’ Tully depot for produce storage. Another four transport bays will also be added from next year, with about

eight staff currently employed at the depot in addition to drivers regularly transiting from Blenners’ Tully and Cairns depots. Mr Law said Blenners was using local businesses to purchase parts and service their Mareeba-based trucks and other equipment at the depot. “The people we’ve employed up here are local drivers too,” he said. During Mareeba’s traditional fruit season, Blenners will load up to as many as 30 trucks a day with Tablelands produce. Local bananas, mango, avocado and citrus crops have always been the company’s primary market, but the opening of a Mareeba-based depot means they can now cater for any type of produce grown on the Tablelands thanks to their storage facilities..

CONGRATULATIONS Blenners Transport on the opening of your new depot in Mareeba.

Your money couldn’t buy more Sitting high at the rear of the two and half acre block and catching all breezes’ could be the answer to your home search. The second shed is 9m x 6m, plenty of ventilation and two doors opening onto another concrete pad which comes in very handy for a work from home tradie (concrete floor, power and phone). WHITE CHOCOLATE BLUEBERRY TRUFFLES Ingredients

Method 1. In a small sauce pan simmer heavy cream. Remove from heat, add softened butter and stir until butter is completely melted and combined with heavy cream. Add powdered dried blueberries and stir to combine. Set aside. 2. Over a double boiler melt chopped white chocolate, stirring casually until smooth and completely melted. DO NOT heat above 40°C. 3. Gently stir in lukewarm blueberry mixture into melted chocolate. It should be approximately the same temperature as melted chocolate when you combine them. 4. Cool to room temperature, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough to roll the balls (2-3 hours or overnight). While it’s cooling take it from the fridge and stir with a fork to prevent the fat separate on top. Cover with plastic wrap and place back into the fridge. 5. Scoop out the mixture and roll into 1 inch balls. Clean your hands with paper towel after each truffle if the mixture stick too much or you can dust your hands with powdered sugar. 6. Roll each truffle into powdered sugar to coat them well.

Atherton didn't adapt well to the conditions at Griffith Park on Saturday where they took on top-of-the-table Rovers in a two-day match. Rovers decision to send Atherton in looked to be a good one with valuable wickets falling early. Paul Nasser nicked one to slips and at 1-4 Gerard Fox and Pete Sceresini had to work hard to see off the opening attack. Foxy didn't quite get all of a hook shot and was unlucky to be caught on the boundary for 12. Tom Boorman 16 and Caleb Constant 23 both got starts but didn't go on, batting around Pete who had dug in and posted his 50 off 124 balls.

Batting through 64 overs, Pete Sceresini celebrated his maiden first grade ton with a cover drive for 4 before being run out shortly after for 103. That concluded the innings and allowed time for Atherton to bowl one over. The boys will need to work hard to defend their 180 when they resume the match with Rovers this Saturday, continuing their innings 0-3. Congratulations to Dan Parnell who was named in the Queensland Country North Qld T20 team. Atherton will be without the services of their star leg spinner as Dan travels to Brisbane this coming weekend to compete in the finals series.

Shield games cause upset wins ST Thomas School’s rugby league juniors have triumphed in the Chris and Debbie Sheppard Shield games held earlier this month. The matches, which have been played annually for the past seven years between St Thomas and Mareeba State School, have mostly been won by the latter. But it wasn’t to be this time around, player of the match Hannah Geary leading St Thomas to a 12-8 victory in the Debbie Sheppard Shield. Mareeba State’s Tenean Brimm was her side’s player of the match. Meanwhile, Harrison Birch impressed in the Chris Sheppard Shield for St Thomas, who snuck past Mareeba State 6-4. Birch picked up St Thomas’ player of the match for his efforts, while Caine Hastie got the gong for Mareeba State. St Thomas’ PE teacher Mick Raso praised the level of talent on display in both games, which featured students from grades

a really good atmosphere.” Mr Raso said St Thomas’ girls team was the most competitive he had ever seen contest the Debbie Sheppard Shield. Former Mareeba man and retired NRL veteran Chris Sheppard attended the matches with his mum Debbie, delighting the players.

Martial arts man arms up

INTENSE: Ben Gilmore executes a twin downward knife hand strike.

A MAREEBA Taekwon-Do instructor has taken his martial arts discipline to the next level after earning international accreditation. Mareeba Queensland Taekwon-Do Academy senior instructor Ben Gilmore has now been promoted to the rank of international instructor after completing an intensive course on December 3. The 25-year-old, who has been involved in Taekwon-Do since he was nine, is currently ranked as a fourth Dan black belt. Gilmore’s promotion to international instructor level also means he can now conduct International Taekwon-Do Federation classes anywhere in the world.

MAREEBA’S Under 12 Cricket side travelled to Mossman on Saturday to take on a strengthened Port Douglas, with Mareeba captain Angus Campman playing for the Port Douglas Muddies to even the teams up. Mareeba batted first to be 4 down for 0 in the second over. Bryce Fincham and Will Hanlon came to the crease and had a partnership of 55 runs and Mareeba went on to make 9/166. The Muddies batted well with Angus Campman making 26 and helping to get them over the line with 4/185. Best bowlers for Mareeba were RJ Johnson 1/3 and Jack Kruse 1/10. The Under 12’s were the only Mareeba team who played at the weekend, with all teams now on Christmas break.

“This is a huge achievement for him and demonstrates to the community Ben's dedication and commitment to his hobby,” said Taekwon-Do North Queensland chief instructor Jeff Dieben. The International Instructors course was presented by ninth Dan Grand Master Ming Tuck Low and focused not only on the technical aspects of Taekwon-Do, but also on the importance of the philosophy in the discipline, including the subject of moral culture. Taekwon-Do club training is run from 6pm to 7.30pm every Monday and Wednesday at the Mareeba PCYC. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/itfnq/
