Irene’s pick of the bunch
FOR Mutchilba farmer Irene Westwood, finding the region’s biggest mango is as much about the fun of it as it is about pure luck. The lucky local, pictured here with granddaughters Gemma and Laura, has won The Express’ KP Mango Competition with her winning whopper topping the scales at 1.198kg. Mrs Westwood said she was delighted her entry was crowned champion mango. FULL STORY – PAGE 2
Just get on with it Cook MP backs $21m shopping centre land deal By Michael Serenc COOK MP Billy Gordon has backed a proposed
$21 million shopping centre for Mareeba, as the State Government considers selling a parcel of land needed for the project to go ahead. In an unexpected endorsement, Mr Gordon said the shopping centre would “drive business opportunities and jobs” for Mareeba and promised to write to Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham to encourage the State to sell the land needed to developer Reed-
lodge Pty Ltd. “Let’s get on with the project. There’s nothing else in the pipeline that matches this one,” he said in a statement. “Mareeba Shire has high youth unemployment. This project would generate about 250 jobs, including entry-level jobs in maintenance, construction and retail.” The move comes after Mareeba Shire Council voted against relinquishing their trusteeship over the 1128m2 parcel of land needed for the project at last month’s council meeting. While the decision on selling the land ulti-
mately rests with the State Government’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM), they will be influenced by council’s decision. Mr Gordon criticised council for not backing the shopping centre. “This is not good for business confidence when a local investor’s willingness to keep contributing to his local economy is stagnated because State land is not being made available for development,” he said. The land, originally reserved for aged housing, is hampered with drainage issues, lack of road access and a power pole which would all

need to be rectified if council eventually decided to build on it. Mr Gordon said the shopping centre would have economic flow-on effects by acting as “a vibrant commercial and trade-hub for Cape York communities and the South Western communities beyond the Tablelands”. “It’s a significant economic stimuli being offered at the door-step, at a time when the Queensland Government is courting non-Australian investors,” he said.

Nominations for the 2017 Great Wheelbarrow Race are now open, and with a new look nomination form, registering a team has never been easier. One of Far North Queensland’s greatest events is being revitalised in 2017, with the race now starting in Chillagoe and finishing in Mareeba. “After 13 years and thousands of runners later, the decision was made to bring the gold home,” said race chair and Mareeba Shire councillor Nipper Brown. The charity event remains a three day, fun-filled endurance event, taking in the rugged picturesque landscape of the region. Competitors will start the 144km journey in Chillagoe on Friday morning and arrive back to Mareeba
Sunday afternoon. Participants can form teams, pairs or even compete individually as they walk or run with a wheelbarrow. Mr Brown said he was looking forward to the event and urged those interested in competing to get their nominations in early. “Nominations will close on Monday, May 1,” he said. “We are going to be strict on late nominations this year. As long as we receive your nomination early, we can update your information should things change.” The 2017 Great Wheelbarrow race will be held between May 19 and May 21. To nominate head to www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com. Nominations close on May 1.
Monster mango wins KP competition MANGO munchers, look no further. Coming in at an impressive 1.198kg, the freakish fruit has been named winner of The Express’ KP Mango Competition after a four month long search for the region’s heaviest Kensington Pride mango. Found by farmer Irene Westwood while walking through her mango orchid with her sister late last month, the grandmother-of-five knew she had found something special. “The season’s finished for us but sometimes there’s fruit caught under the tree and you don’t see it, so we went looking for mangoes to dry,” she said. “We saw this one and I thought “Holy Moly, it was meant to be found”. “I just knew it would be a winner.” Mrs Westwood’s husband Brian, also a farmer, said he liked the fact the competition “created a bit of excitement” for the region. “It’s all in the spirit of good fun…No matter how busy you are when you’re picking, you’ve still got an eye open for that big mango,” he said. “It also gives the KP some publicity. It’s one of the best-tasting mangoes out there.” Mrs Westwood will receive $500 prize money for her winning entry, which will be split
amongst her five grandchildren. Last year’s competition winners Roy and Elizabeth Fresta had an even bigger mango entry which came in at 1.536 kg. Meanwhile, Dimbulah woman Shandell Hilditch came in second with her 1.083kg entry, winning $300, while Biboohra farmer Steven Johnston netted third place and $200 for his 1.074kg mango. The Express’ managing editor Carl Portella congratulated all competition winners and said he looked forward to seeing another wave of entries when the competition started again in October. “The KP Mango Competition has always generated excitement amongst mango munchers across the Tablelands and it’s great to see that enthusiasm again this year,” he said. “I can’t wait for what whoppers fall off the tree next season.” Mr Portella also thanked the competition’s sponsors, Total Food Network and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association, for their ongoing support. The competition winners will be formally announced at a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon in the coming months.
HOW’S THAT FOR SIZE? Irene Westwood’s 1.198kg KP mango has won this year’s KP Mango Competition.

Shopping centre deal backed by Cook MP FROM Page 1 If Dr Lynham approves Reedlodge’s request to purchase the land, State Government body Property Queensland will then need to examine the transaction to ensure the land is being sold at market value before signing off on the purchase. If successful, the block would add to Reedlodge’s existing 12,403m2 of land situated across from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, allowing the company to proceed with a development application to council. A major supermarket chain is planned to be an anchor tenant if the development is approved, which would generate between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Once built, the 7000m2 cen-
tre is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs. Reedlodge solicitor and spokesman Pietro Girgenti praised Mr Gordon’s support for the land sale and shopping centre. “The decision does rest with the State Government so for him as the local member to get behind it is a fantastic show of support,” he said. “We maintain our position that this is a small parcel of land that is not usable and is in the best interests of the shire and the State for it to be disposed of to allow our development to proceed. “We think we have a strong case, it’s disappointing council doesn’t agree, but notwithstanding we think the State will see it’s the right decision.”

Lions’ plan for Priors Creek ATHERTON Lions Club has countered Tablelands Regional Council’s Priors Creek Master Plan with a modified proposal to maximise community benefit. The club’s Priors Creek Investigation Committee wants to instead turn land set aside for retail and accommodation space into more gardens and facilities for the public. Committee chairman Terry Clark said he did not want the area to become a “concrete jungle”. “We’ve studied the area and we feel it’s ideal for botanic gardens for education purposes, as well as scenic viewing,” he said. “We don’t want shops in there or accommodation…The only buildings we’d like to see there is the information centre and maybe the bus stop, with a souvenir shop and restaurant.”
Mr Clark said Priors Creek should be solely a “recreational space” with gardens, a rotunda for weddings, walking tracks, picnic and barbeque areas and a playground able to accommodate handicapped children. The club has also taken issue with a proposed road going through the eastern side of the precinct and more parking to service the retail and accommodation precinct. “This takes up too much of the public open space, while an extra road can be dangerous to our children visiting and using the parkland,” Mr Clark said. Instead of a road going into Priors Creek, the club has proposed the parking areas of the Carrington and Barron Valleys Hotels become a “vehicle

and van park with their exit onto existing roads outside the Priors Creek area”. “We’d eventually like to see our park go right through Platypus Park to the end of Grove St,” he said. “We’d still leave the railway track there for the bikes. We think that’s a great, integral part of the gardens.” Mr Clark said the club had discussed their proposal with council and wanted the public to decide which plan they preferred. “We’re looking at raising the money ourselves for our proposal, other than council providing the roadworks, power and water,” he said.

Farmers to shape quad forum TABLELANDS farmers could help shape the future framework of quad bike safety training at an innovative forum in March. The inaugural National ATV Safety Forum will bring together several farming, motoring and workplace health and safety organisations to Cairns for a discussion on the latest quad bike safety technology and training standards for using quadbikes in the workplace. Forum organiser and Quadsafe Australia director Colin Lawson said it was vital farmers gave their workers accredited safety training on operating quad bikes. Mr Lawson, an avid quad bike rider and former dealer on the Tablelands, said the two-day forum would be the first of its kind in Far North Queensland and would help clarify several “grey areas” around quad bike safety. “We have some awesome speakers at the event, ranging from the Queensland coroner’s office to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland,” he said. Queensland has the most quad bikes in use within Australia, but 50 per cent of fatalities last year also came from the state. The forum comes as new laws introduced by the State Government at the start of this month ban children under the age of eight from riding as passengers on quad bikes or utility off-road vehicles, also known as Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs). Riders who go on roads or a road-related area with either a quad bike or UTV must

wear a helmet. Riders not wearing a helmet will be liable for a $362 fine and three demerit points. However, there is no legal obligation for people to wear helmets while riding a quad bike on their property. Mr Lawson said he understood farmers found helmets cumbersome and hot to wear, but with recent changes to Australian helmet standards, a line of European models would offer more comfort and choice. “The reality is even if they’re not mandated, if you have staff on a quad bike, it’s your responsibility to make them as safe as possible,” he said. “Even though it is an excuse and it’s the culture that we don’t wear helmets when we’re on a quad bike, it is going to have to change. “The sad thing is there will be more local farmers fined before people get the message.”
A North Queensland farming business was fined $125,000 for the death of a 21-year-old worker in 2013 after pleading guilty to meeting its obligations under workplace health and safety laws. “The problem with quad bikes is because they’re so easy to operate, farmers don’t believe they need safety training,” Mr Lawson said. “We need to educate farmers on how these fatalities are happening and then they can make a decision on their use and their predicament – how to protect their employees and family on quad bikes.” The forum will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre between March 30 and March 31. To attend, contact Jane Lawson on 0427 911 746. Cost is $175 per person.

Donations sought for medical boat A PAIR of compassionate Mareeba men are calling on the public’s support to help an impoverished region of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Keith Courte and Laurie Rasmussen were shocked by the squalid living conditions endured by local tribes after they first visited the region about five years ago to help train local sawmill workers. “It was just horrendous. There
was an aid post there but there was virtually no medicine,” he said. “Mothers were dying in childbirth and children were dying from diseases they shouldn’t have died from. The men want to convert a 16m motor cruiser boat they have purchased into a floating medical aid station to help several local tribes living along the Fly River in PNG’s Western Province.
The men are hoping to raise $50,000 to build living quarters on the boat for doctors and nurses operating with Australian Doctors International based in the port town of Kiunga on the Fly River. The boat would also provide day clinical and pharmaceutical facilities. To donate, contact Keith Courte on 0429 395 799 or email fnqdt43@ gmail.com

Tree planters needed ENVIRONMENTALLY conscious Tablelanders are being urged to attend a community tree planting event this Saturday. Barron Catchment Care’s “Green Corridor” project is in need of help to plant 500 trees in the Barron River catchment area, adding to a staggering 110,000 native trees that have already been planted covering 91ha. Barron River Catchment Coordinator Ian Sinclair said the area had been transformed over the decade into a thriving eco-system. “The area downstream of the bridge was planted a number of years ago, however the trees suffered badly from the exotic vine Turbina corymbosa. Now that the turbina has been removed, the trees are really thriving,” he said.
“The new site not only had turbina, but was also infested with Japanese sunflower and guinea grass. These weeds have been treated and the site is now ready. The planting will not only add to the biodiversity value, but enhance the visual amenity of the area”. Cairns Airport has been supporting the project. The tree planting event starts at 8:30am with morning smoko provided at 10am. Volunteers are urged to bring a hat, gloves and drinking water. For more information, contact Ian Sinclair on 4095 7109. Council decision defies logic, flies in face of economic growth THEY’VE done it again. The two goats/ few shops mentality is alive and well at Mareeba Shire Council after a land re-assignment of inaccessible, virtually unusable proposed pensioner residential land that was vital to the Reedlodge shopping centre plans, not to mention an extra 200 jobs and more shopping options for residents was knocked on the head via the powers that be at the MSC. When you think of it, a couple of things have become very apparent from this latest chapter in the ongoing saga. If you are unemployed and would have sought a job at the new shopping centre, remember well the names of those who voted against progress in Mareeba CBD when they next stand for local government election in March 2018. Among that anti development group,
there's at least one Councillor who, as my memory serves me, spoke out vehemently against Mareeba Shire Deamalgamation. That was Mayor Gilmore himself. Perhaps he needs reminding that he is no longer in office as Mayor of the TRC, Rosa Lee Long had him voted out. Now Cr Gilmore is supposed to support Mareeba Shire and its residents and job seekers. In reflection, despite massive residential and industrial growth in the past 20 years, Mareeba has had just one major retail development in place since 1979 - 38 years ago - when Mareeba Square was opened. The town's other main retail shopping centre was merely replaced after a fire. Apart from some remodelling of buildings that went up in the 1950s and 60s and the Post Office Centre the only other major CBD
development have been offices constructed by the very people who propose the new shopping centre. For those of you who think Atherton gets everything - THAT pro active town and council has had four major shopping precincts namely Tableland Shopping Village - Silo Central Shopping Centre - Barletta's precinct and Big W all within the last 25 years or so. Atherton does not have a large tract of land bang smack in the middle of their CBD as a long standing monument to stupidity on the part of their civic fathers and mothers. Instead Atherton has progressive "can do" councillors who leave it to developers who follow the rules to create the proactive progress, shopping choices and jobs that follow for all sectors of the community to keep place with local residential and industrial development .
If you really want to see how proactive Mareeba Shire Council is, keep a close watch on services etc. that remain at Mareeba District Hospital over the next few years. Another MSC Mayor and council of a bygone era made SURE that Mareeba Hospital and its services kept place with residential and industrial development. Might I remind you all that the worst thing that can happen to Mareeba Shire is a repeat performance of the "no go" Tully Millstream Hydro scheme debacle that once was good enough to get a local State politician re-elected and then abandoned just a few weeks later when he said it was "dead in the water and to move on and get o0ver it". History doesn't repeat itself... does it?
Mayor needs to listen on bus stop
then a population of about 2000 people. Since then the area has tripled in size and a good idea would be to turn the bus shelter into a loading zone for the delivery trucks to park and unload safely without holding up traffic every day. I made a point of going down to IGA at the Silo Central Shopping Centre, and talking to the representatives there, I was told that the VIC was to go there but no decision was made to have the bus shelter moved as well. It sounds like the mayor and the council might be doing a backflip on moving it. Darryl Drury, Atherton
are being considered now for them to be listed federally as Endangered. Mothers are pregnant for 6 months and breast-feed for 6 months, having one baby a year for an average of 4 years. It will take a long time for numbers to build up now they are so low. There is a second species of flying fox in Mareeba at the moment. They have their young in April/May and Council will have an opportunity to disperse this mixed camp of flying foxes before any of these young are born. Yes some people find them noisy and smelly but the media exaggerates the health risks associated with flying foxes. The only disease people can get from infected Australian flying foxes is Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV). It is extremely rare in flying foxes and completely preventable in humans. You are more likely to be struck by lightening. Jenny McLean Director, Tolga Bat Hospital
Is it any wonder almost 12,000 jobs have disappeared from the wider North Queensland region, including Ingham, since Labor came to office? At every turn Labor has looked to hurt farmers and stifle development in North Queensland. But the LNP has fought Labor every step of the way. It was the LNP which delivered genuine marketing choice for sugar growers. It was the LNP which stopped Labor’s unfair and extreme vegetation management laws. North Queensland has so much potential and that’s why I’ve spent a lot of my time on the road in the region listening to and talking with locals about the projects that are important to them. The LNP will continue to stand up to Labor and the green activists looking to stifle development and we will continue to fight to make sure North Queensland gets its fair share. Tim Nicholls Queensland Opposition Leader
I am writing in response to Mayor Joe Paronella’s letter in The Express on January 25. We, the shop owners, were unhappy with the meeting we had with the mayor and four other members of the council in November last year. The mayor has said the council was to embark on extensive community consultation of the Priors Creek project. It makes sense to relocate both the bus shelter and the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) to that location. We could see quite clearly at the meeting that the mayor was not happy that we, the store owners, wanted to move the bus shelter from the dark stares and the blank look on his face. He could not take the time to talk to any of the shop owners, as Councillor Eden and deputy mayor Katrina Spies took the time to ask questions and take down notes to try and do the best thing for all involved. It only makes sense that it would be the ideal to have both the bus shelter and VIC together at Priors Creek. When bus passengers, many of them tourists, get off the buses, the first thing they look for is where to go or what to do in town. You have to remember, Cr Paronella, that the bus shelter has been in the same location for 70 years and was built for what was

THERE are several hundred young Spectacled flying foxes currently in the camp in Mareeba. Any dispersal at this time would leave many of them orphaned. They are too young to fly, and too big for their mothers to carry. Any attempt to disperse the Spectacled flying foxes would create an animal welfare as well as a conservation issue. This species of flying fox is a pollinator and seed disperser for a wide range of ecosystems, from the dry forests around Mareeba to rainforests, wetlands and mangroves. Spectacled flying foxes have declined 60% in the last 10 years according to CSIRO data. They are currently listed as Vulnerable to extinction Advertisement but submissions Queensland Health
Govt out of touch with North Qld NORTH Queenslanders feel like they are being left behind by this do-nothing, Brisbanecentric Labor Government. This is the one thing that well and truly came through during my most recent visit to the region. Despite having the balance of power, KAP has failed to deliver more jobs and investment to the north. Infrastructure spending in the North Queensland region has been slashed by $180 million this year alone.

Lockout losses
FEBRUARY 1 is the day that Labor’s unfair lockout laws were meant to begin. In case you that announcement, Annastacia Palaszczuk has decided to backflip on her so-called strong commitment and break another election promise. Yet again the government that is making it up as it goes along and reacting to the politics of the day - rather than providing good government to the people of Queensland. To be clear, the LNP never supported the lockout laws. However, Annastacia Palaszczuk could have saved everyone from a year of uncertainty and supported our comprehensive plan to reduce alcohol and drug-related violence – the Safe Night Out strategy. We now have a situation where the lockout laws are in place but Annastacia Palaszcuk is telling Queenslanders to ignore them and instead embrace a new ID scanning and banning regime. The frustrating thing is this scanning and banning scheme has been instituted since 2014, but is only coming into force now after the Palaszczuk Government put the brakes on it. Sound hard to follow? You’re not alone. How does the Government expect Queenslanders to keep up with the law of the land when they don’t really know themselves? This is yet another bungle from AttorneyGeneral Yvette D’Ath and another broken promise from Annastacia Palaszczuk. Only the LNP has been consistent on this issue, putting community safety and the late night economy ahead of politics. Jarrod Bleijie MP Shadow Minister for Employment and Fair Trading

Local science and agriculture students are being urged to register for the Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition. PICTURE: DAF Coles Mareeba service manager Julie Collins and team members Lenny Sturgess and Sharon Austin are getting behind Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Comp lures plant buffs Coles digs deep for TABLELANDS science and agriculture students are being urged to register for an innovative competition. The annual Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition generates interest in agriculture and science among young Australians through hands-on experiments and activities in the classroom. So far, over 100 schools have registered to take part. DAF competition organiser Kerrie Rubie said the 2017 theme ‘the Dirt on Soils’ aimed to educate Prep to Year 12 students about the vital natural resource soil. “With creative, engaging and hands-on activates, students will gain an understanding of the important role soils play in our ecosystem,” she said. “Participating students will be experimenting on soils, presenting the global importance
of soils, playing the ‘A Day in the Life of Soils’ card game, creating a soils diorama and more. “Students with an interest in art can also enter the Art in AgRiculTure Awards section, and create an artwork depicting what agriculture might look like in the year 2217, using soils and other earthy materials.” 2017 competition winners will be awarded prizes during National Science week on August 15 at the Hermitage Research Facility Awards Day and Agricultural Science Expo, Warwick. Entries for the 2017 DAF Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition will close on June 23. Both schools and individuals can register their interest in participating at any stage. It is advised participants are to allow at least 6 weeks to complete the required activities before the closing date. For more information, call 13 25 23 or visit www.daf.qld.gov.au/plants/ field-crops-and-pastures/research/hermitagecompetition
cancer research COLES Mareeba will once again get their tins rattling for an important cause. Held annually, the supermarket chain’s nationwide fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month will allow customers to purchase a $2 teal ribbon, $3 teal pen or make a donation at Coles stores, with all money raised going towards Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA). Coles Mareeba service manager Julie Collins said her staff had always embraced the month and hoped to top the $1300 raised by the store last year. OCA provides direct support to those living with the disease and funds vital research. The month will culminate on February 22 for
“Teal Ribbon Day”, when supporters across the country have the opportunity to host an “Afternoon Teal” to have a cuppa, raise funds and start a conversation about ovarian cancer. Ms Collins, who lost her father to cancer, said her store would host their own staff fundraiser and other activities in support of the day. Each year, more than 1500 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and only 43 per cent of women will survive five years post diagnosis – one of the lowest survival rates of any women’s cancer. Mareeba could host Cup visit MAREEBA could host a visit by the iconic Melbourne Cup, if the community wants it bad enough. The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will travel across Australia and New Zealand again this year, clocking up more 30 destinations with the 18-carat gold Cup while celebrating a milestone 15 years on the road. The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has now opened up the tender process for the Cup Tour, with submissions being accepted. Since 2003, the $175,000 Cup has travelled more than 456,000 km to rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand. One of those towns was Croydon, who received a visit from the Cup last September in the lead up to November’s “Race that stops a nation”. “We never dreamed that the Tour would evolve into such a significant community event, which 15 years later, continues to grow in popularity,” said VRC CEO Simon Love.
“We are humbled by the pleasure the Cup provides to people of all ages, and want to ensure that as many communities as possible share the same unique opportunity again this year.” In 2016, the $175,000 gold trophy toured 34 destinations, providing schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs with a unique opportunity to host a day of community events and raise valuable funds for local causes. Past racing legends also accompany the Cup each year on its epic journey to recount some of their remarkable stories. Each host destination selected for the tour must commit to provide memorable and engaging community events involving the Cup for everyone to enjoy. Local fundraising initiatives will also be supported. The tour officially commences in July 2017, with successful destinations announced in June. Tenders to be submitted at melbournecuptour.com.au by 5pm AEST April 3.

Rains dampens match Wet conditions made for a tough cricket match at the weekend for the Under 14's in the top of the table clash against Atherton. Mareeba batted first with Zac Myrteza opening with a quick 25 runs. The wet deck made it hard to get the ball out of the inner circle, and runs were scarce. Jarrod France knocked a steady 18 off 33 and the team were bowled out for 99. Play resumed after rain during the changeover of innings and Mareeba struggled to control the ball in the wet conditions. A few catches got put down and Atherton ran away with the win, finishing on 4/148. There was some tidy bowling from Ben Jones with 0/1, Ryan Peace with 1/6 and Liam Rofe with 1/8.

and play here again.” Allen said the club’s recent Summer 6’s competition helped to generate increased interest in families playing during the regular season. “It inspires people to actually think ‘I could play this game’,” she said. The club will again host a junior carnival this year for noncompetitive ages (6-11), open to all clubs across the Cairns region. “It’s the only time our juniors get to play at our home ground because all our games are normally played at Endeavour Park,”
PLAYER PROFILE
THE Mareeba Bulls are being invaded by a record number of relatives on the pitch. A whopping 11 local families now have members playing in junior, ladies and senior men’s sides at the club, with president Jodi Allen absolutely stoked. “It’s just the case that we’re structured as a club where anyone can feel they can play at any age,” she said. “You can start at five and play until you’re 55. “There’s such a passion here, a lot of people started when they were six, they go on to bigger and better things and then come back
Allen said. “For this season, once they reach competitive age of 12 they’ll follow the senior matches so they’ll have a few games in front of their home crowd.” The Bulls will host their junior sign-on day at Borzi Park on February 18 from 9am to 12pm. Boys and girls aged between five and 16 are welcome to attend. “If you’ve ever thought about playing, come along,” Allen said. “Whether you’re a boy or a girl, you can start at any age.”

Sports and community organisations in need of a dollar or two are being urged to get in touch with a local pizza store. Mareeba Domino’s, which only opened in December last year, is able to do a “Doughraiser” fundraiser, which donates a small amount of money from every pizza sold to a chosen sport group, charity or community organisation. Store owner Rohit Patel said he loved living and working in Mareeba and was happy to give back. “The people here are friendly. I’ve been living here eight years so we know quite a few of them,” he said.
“We’d love to support local sports teams, schools and organisations by hosting a Doughraiser to fundraise for them.” Mr Patel said he would also consider sponsoring local sports teams in the area. “It’s a good way to show we are supporting local teams and the culture,” he said. The store is looking to hire more staff, while Mr Patel will also visit local high schools to offer work experience for students. For more information about fundraising, call 1300 366 466.

Gladiators triumph in first test THE Mareeba Gladiators have scored a confidence-boosting win in their first pre-season hit-out last Saturday. Player-coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said he was satisfied with his side’s performance after defeating the Northern Pride Under 20s 26-10 at a wet Calendar Park in Innisfail. “It was a really tough hit out,” he said. “It was very fast. Obviously they’ve been training three times a week since November so they were in a lot better condition, fitness-wise. “But we really stuck it to them and came home strong.” Tries to Boche Satrick, Jack Hogan, Birdsall Faapepelle,

Ingebrigtsen singled out forwards Kurt Jackson and Henare Meava for their dominating performance on the day. “They were the two big go-forwards in the middle for us,” he said. “Boche Satrick was brilliant out in the backs as well.” The win announces the Gators as serious contenders heading into the regular CDRL season, as they aim to make the finals this year. “It wasn’t about the result. For us winning last night, it was
just about putting in a good performance and seeing how different players play,” Ingebrigtsen said. “There’s a really good buzz at the moment.” Ingebrigtsen said he was keen to improve his side’s match fitness ahead of another gruelling pre-season clash away against Mossman/Port Douglas this Saturday. “It’s always going to be a tough game against them but we’ll get a few players back who didn’t play last weekend,” he said. “Hopefully we can put in another strong performance and keep the confidence and the roll-on going.” > MORE ACTION PHOTOS Page 21
