Teachers at Mareeba State School will have their work cut out for them in 2014 with the school boasting a record 12 sets of twins.

Rates left steady Mr Gilmore said there were three major financial challenges facing council and the community in the short-term: paying for de-amalgamation, upgrading the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant, and absorbing an 860 per cent increase in the cost of raw water. The final cost of de-amalgamation is yet to be finalised but is expected to fall somewhere between $5 and $6 million or between $500 and $600 for each rateable property. “... while we will explore options to lessen the impact on ratepayers, the fact remains that whatever payment option is chosen, the end result is the same – the full cost has to be borne by the ratepayer,” Mayor Gilmore said. Upgrading Mareeba’s dilapidated waste water treatment plant is expected to come at a cost of between $27 and $30 million which would see

atepayers have avoided short-term hip-pocket pain as the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) left rates steady in its inaugural budget handed down on January 30. A lack of time, and the absence of key financial data stemming from de-amalgamation, limited the ability for council to make wholesale changes from the budget it inherited from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). Mayor Tom Gilmore said the budget marked the first step in restoring the Mareeba Shire as a viable local council but that ratepayers needed to be prepared for future “price shocks” in the 2014-15 budget which will be handed down in June.

the annual charge for sewerage increase from $700 to $1300 for each household. As a result of the looming expense, the MSC has increased sewerage charges by $75 for the six-month period until the next budget is bought down. Non-residential premises in Kuranda, already paying an exurbanite amount for sewerage, will avoid this increase. Late last year, State-owned bulk water supplier SunWater advised council that the price of water supplied to towns across the region would increase from $58.72 to $563.54 a megalitre. SunWater has agreed to defer the increase for 12 months as a result of de-amalgamation but once implemented the increase will add $2.728 million to the operating costs of the Mareeba, Kuranda and Dimbulah water supply schemes. “The estimated increase in the annual water

Reflecting on the budget, Mr Gilmore said handing down the budget had been an enormous

Inspirational opportunity By Ryan Groube A talented singer from Mareeba has returned home after spending a week being tutored by some of Australia’s biggest country music stars. Kate Wilcox, 14, was awarded a Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) scholarship from the Walkamin Country Music Club. Valued at $2200, the scholarship paid for Kate to spend a week at Tamworth, in the lead-up to Australia’s biggest country music festival. During the week, 21 of the best young country musicians from across Australia descend on Tamworth for a series of song writing, performance and career building workshops. The group of singers was broken up into three upon arrival which each cohort receiving their own mentor. Kate was paired with country rocker Jayne Denham whose hit ‘Addicted to the Diesel’ hit number one on the Australian Country Singles charts. A jam-packed schedule saw the 21 singer’s warm-up as a group in the morning before splitting off into their groups across 12-hour days. “There were a lot of jam sessions in that time though,” Kate laughed.“The whole course helped me a lot with the performance and technical elements of my singing.” On the final night, Kate took to the

stage at the leagues club where she performed Mean by Taylor Swift on the recommendation of Ms Denham. Kate said the whole week had been an extraordinary experience and wanted to thank the Walkamin Country Music Club for the opportunity. “The scholarship has helped me immensely. I made so many great friends and created so many great memories. It was one of the best weeks of my life,” she said. The youngster, who counts Sara Storer and Kasey Chambers as her music idols, has been singing since she was four and was one of the opening acts for the Wolfe Brothers in 2013. Walkamin Country Music Club president Darryl Chaplain said awarding the CMAA scholarship had become a central part of the club’s annual Far North Queensland Country Music Festival. “The academy is a great opportunity for our young singers to learn from the best in the industry,” Mr Chaplain said. “We award the scholarship not just based on their musical ability but how they support the club, treat members and who the person the judges deem will most benefit from it.” Kate hopes to return to Tamworth in the coming years to perform at the 10day festival. The Walkamin Country Music Club will hold its first open mic night for the year at the Mareeba RSL on February 15, kicking off at 6pm.

Mysterious unveiling at Heritage Centre By Boyd Robertson A mysterious sculpture and two pieces of local history will form the Mareeba Heritage Centre’s latest exhibit, which will be unveiled this weekend. Lake Eacham artist Viven Plant worked with welder Bruce Rowe to create the sculpture, which is being kept under wraps until the opening of the exhibit at 10am Saturday morning at the centre. Although the nature of the sculpture is still secret, Ms Plant said that it was con-

structed from steel and fibreglass and that it was ‘comical’ in nature. “Put it this way – it looks very improbable,” Ms Plant told the Express. “Personally I think it’s the best thing I’ve made so far and I think it’s hysterical. “It’s been a ton fun making it and not boring by any means.” The other attractions in the exhibit include the marking the centenary of the first amateur experimental radio station licence in Queensland. The licence was issued on February 7,

1914 to Marcus Brims, who was forced to surrender it to the government shortly afterwards due to the outbreak of the First World War. By the time the war had ended and the bans on broadcasting were lifted, Mr Brims had lost interest in amateur radio, with the licence only recently being uncovered by the Heritage Centre. The Tableland Radio and Electronics Club (TREC) will initiate communication with other amateur radio stations all over the world at the unveiling to mark the cen-

Robin Gourley said the land adjacent to his business has become an illegal dump and race track. Pictured with a grenade he found during an inspection of the site last week. Above right, a mound of trash typical of those scattered around the site

Dumping ground By Ryan Groube Land slated for the long-awaited Mareeba bypass road has become a hot-spot for illegal activity. The vacant land is littered with deep ruts where hoons have been doing burnouts and illegal dump sites are scattered at regular intervals. Robin Gourley lives and operates Mareeba Armoury off Slade Road at the edge of the road reserve. He said he is sick of the dust from burnouts clogging up specialised machinery, the late-night noise and the mounds of trash at the edge of his property. Last week, Mr Gourley gave The Express a tour of the land which uncovered a grenade, an ammunition box home to a resident green tree frog, soiled sheets, empty alcohol bottles and assorted household goods. “They are just dumping everything here and I just don’t have any idea why they can’t

take it to the dump where they can get rid of this stuff for free,” he said. “The hooning is just getting ridiculous. The dust from the burnouts gets into my machines which cost $5000 to replace a motor. I am getting sick and tired of having to pay big money to have them replaced.” Mr Gourley said the land was being used illegally at least twice a month with the last instance of illegal dumping occurring on January 28 with six boxes of rotten mangoes left less than 20 metres from his fence. “I ran out to try and get their number plate details but they had gone before I got outside,” he said. About five years ago when the hooning and dumping first began, Mr Gourley said he reported the incidents to Council and to the police but the illegal activity hasn’t stopped. He said he has since stopped bothering to report each instance. Officer in charge of the Mareeba Police

Station Derek Garner said it was important the public reported all illegal activity to police, particularly in relation to hooning offences. Senior sergeant Garner said if police are aware of hot spots they can increase patrols in affected areas. He said the best chance police had of apprehending people, however, was by getting reports with license details. Penalties for illegally dumping waste can range from $220 to $2200 for an individual and $1600 and $7040 for a corporation. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said it “defies belief” that people would illegally dump waste when a $135 waste levy allows for the free disposal of household goods and green waste at the Mareeba Transfer Station. Council has not had any recent reports of illegal dumping in the area but found a “few old ones”. Anyone witnessing illegal dumping has been urged to report it to council.

Mayor Tom Gilmore will use a looming trip to Brisbane to lobby State ministers for financial support for the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. More than 40 years since it was commissioned, the treatment plant services about 3250 homes and has been operating in breach of its environmental license for more than a decade. The cost of upgrading the plant is expected to be as much as $30 million and without funding ratepayers may be forced to fork out about $1300 each year in sewerage fees. Mr Gilmore said the community would need assistance to cover the cost of the upgrade. “I will be going there [to Brisbane] looking for ministerial support because it is clear that we are going to have to seek government assistance for this thing,” he said. In March 2013, The Express reported that the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) would no longer tolerate the breaches at the facil-

ity, and, regardless of de-amalgamation it would need to be upgraded. The comments came after an inspection of the facility in January 2013 showed that the plant “continues to be non-compliant”. “The department expects that irrespective of the outcome of the [de-amalgamation] referendum, the sewage treatment plant will need to be upgraded to meet the standards of the recently issued development approval,” a department spokesperson said at the time. Last week, The Express asked the department if they will continue to apply pressure on the Mareeba Shire Council to upgrade the facility. “During the de-amalgamation period, EHP met with the Transfer Manager and engineers in August and September 2013, to discuss the management of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The future of the plant will now be a decision for the new Mareeba Shire Council,” a spokesperson for the department said. “EHP’s priority is to establish a solution to the ongoing issues with the Maree

Vivien Plant has come out of retirement and has been commissioned by the Heritage Museum to create one more of her stunning sculptures. The identity of this sculpture is being kept a surprise, for you to come and see at our Museum this Saturday, 8th February at 10am, when Vivien’s work will be unveiled. It is one of her best pieces of work and will be enjoyed by young and old. Vivien was assisted by a multi-talented friend Bruce Row, to create this masterpiece. Vivien Plant has been involved in pottery and sculptures over the last 40 years and ran workshops for the Potters Society and Craft Council in Queensland. Her first sculpture on the Tablelands was a cow in Millaa Millaa and then she built further heritage icons across the Tablelands, including the horse in Malanda, the frog in Yungaburra and several others at the Malanda Dairy Centre. Also this Saturday, the Museum is also celebrating jointly with Tableland Radio & Electronics Club (TREC), the centenary of the very first Queensland Amateur (Experimental) Radio Licence which was issued to Marcus Brims on the 7th of February 1914. Due to World War 1, all amateur radio equipment had to be surrendered to the government by the 6th August 1914. After the war Marcus Brims pursued other interests and his spark gap wireless equipment remained in storage. TREC member Ron Goodhew, VK4EMF, managed to acquire the station, which is in pristine condition, and arranged for it to be on permanent display at the Mareeba Heritage Museum. This Saturday will also include the unveiling of the 1937 Mareeba Hospital Plaque in the Museum’s Rail Ambulance and Medical Exhibit.

Anyone walking the grounds of Mareeba State School (MSS) this year might think they need to get their eyes checked. 12 sets of twins are now enrolled in the school for 2014. New arrivals Andrew and Steven La Spina-Knowlton, Roman and Kane Gibson, Prue and Abby Pillar, Kaleb and Joshua Hine and Nathaniel and Jasmine Bishop bolster MSS’s pre-existing ‘twins crowd’ of Amy and Anthony Simonato, Dannica and Bridie Mead, Georgia and Isabella Battistin, Zac and Ryley Cotter, Maya and Dolique Courtney, Phoenix and Ulysses Body and Joey and Josh Srhoj, making for 24 twinned students in total. Although only a few of them are identical to their siblings, MSS principal Shirlee Gallo said it was a remarkable to have so many twins in one school. “It’s always exciting for us to have so many twins here – we’ve always seemed to have a fairly large twins crowd but this year we’ve happened to have a couple of new pairs enrol which has bumped the numbers up,” she said. “The parents have been very accommodating, dressing them in different shirts so we can tell the identical ones apart or giving them different hair cuts to make things a bit easier. “There’s still plenty of mischief they can get up to, particularly early in the year when the staff still can’t tell them apart too well just yet.” The chief mischief-making twins are the self-confessed ‘troublemaker’ brothers Joey and Joshua Srhoj, 9, who were already putting their near-identical appearances to good use at previous school St Thomas’s, playing havoc with their teachers’ memories. “It’s cool to be twins,” said Joshua. “We used to swap classes and trick our teachers at St

Thomas’s and it was hard for them to get us in trouble because they couldn’t tell who was who. “We try to do it here as well but they have gotten better at telling us apart so it’s harder to do.” Joshua, who is older by his slightly taller brother by five minutes and has a telltale birthmark on his left cheek, also claims Joey has ‘a fatter and uglier face’ than his own. The two brothers share interest in the same TV shows and games, although Joey says he likes classes more than his brother. “Joshua likes to run around more,” he said. “We aren’t going to stop doing pranks when we get older. “It’d be a waste of being twins, I think.” MSS’s 24 twins represent nearly 3 per cent of the school’s 815 students, twice the national average. The town seems to be a hotspot for the phenomenon, with nearby St Thomas’s reporting nine sets of twins while Atherton Primary School has four pairs and Atherton State High School only has two. Identical or “monozygotic” twins occur when an egg is fertilized by a single sperm cell then splits early in development, causing two genetic copies of the same baby to grow. Fraternal or “dizygotic” twins occur when two eggs are simultaneously and both are fertilized by separate sperm cells, resulting in two distinct embryos developing. Despite their similarities no identical twin is exactly the same as their sibling – small mutations and stresses early in development mean the pair’s DNA and fingerprints will still be different. The rates of twin births in countries including Australia and the United States have been rising since the 1950s, a phenomenon attributed to the increasing use of fertility drugs and procedures like in-vitro fertilization.

By Boyd Robertson A former Mareeba woman has been honoured with a major award from the Royal Australian Navy. Warrant Officer Shannon Locke, 35, received a Conspicuous Service Medal (CSM) on Australia Day for her work as the Navy’s Hydrographic Surveying Category Manager. Her job requires her to oversee personnel levels for the Navy’s hydrographical survey arm, which consists of about 120 people. WO Locke said receiving the CSM was a great honour and very unexpected. “Honestly when I first saw the big flash letter they sent me I thought I was in trouble,” she said. “When I opened it, I was stunned – I didn’t expect something like this at all. “To receive the medal is a great honour and I feel very privileged.” WO Locke joined the Navy in 1996 at age 18 after graduating from Mareeba State High School, in the hopes of ‘seeing the world’ but was posted in Cairns for several years until transferring to Canberra in 2010. Her role in Cairns was that of a Hydrographic Survey Operator, mapping the ocean floor and water conditions for the seas surrounding Australia to ensure safe passage for military and civilian vessels. She did manage to get ‘out and about a bit’, however, including a stint as an instructor at the Navy’s hydrographic school in Sydney in 2005 and a posting in the United Kingdom under an exchange program called Exercise Long Look. WO Locke recommends the move to any other young women considering joining the Australian Defence Forces. “I’d definitely say ‘give it a go’ to any-

There’s plenty of inter-service rivalry at family gatherings, WO Locke explained. “Kristin and I gang up a bit on Darryl at Christmas when we’re all together,” she said. WO Locke’s mother Sharron Porter said she was ‘immensely proud’ of her daughter’s achievements.

‘The worst thing you can do is give a financial shock to your community’

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore after bringing down the budget on January 30.

– Mayor Tom Gilmore

From P1 challenge and that he was disappointed more changes couldn’t be made. “It has been a very difficult exercise to bring all of this together with much of the information unavailable to us,” he said. “We expect by bringing down the next budget in June 2014 we will have a far clearer perception of where we are going and how our level of service might have to be adjusted and how our charges might have to be rearranged. “We are headed now into a very complex period of financial management and financial discipline and I would have liked to have made some other changes [to fees and charges] to ease in the impact. The worst thing you can do is give a financial shock to your community. “We will have that information delivered to us in its full and final situation within the next

couple of months and we are getting information through all the time. Within two months we will be able to say this is our position but right now we cannot say that.” Acting Mareeba Shire Council chief executive Rod Ferguson, who finished with council on January 31, said in his budget statement: “Every effort will be made by council to restrain costs as much as possible but a reality of de-amalgamation is that as a smaller shire the ability to spread costs across the greater region of the Tablelands has now gone.” “The Council is committed to providing the services expected by a modern community as long as the community appreciates that such services come at a cost.” The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the budget but President Joe Moro said the looming costs were a concern to the community. “The Chamber is glad with the minimal in-

950 houses without power in Mareeba About 950 Ergon Energy customers in the Mareeba central business district and the eastern side of town had their power supply interrupted for up to two hours on January 31 due to a blown lightning arrestor on Hastie Road. The outage began at 1.45pm and was restored to more than 500 customers an hour later after crews had patrolled a section of the feeder line and not identified any faults.

Crews then located the faulty equipment in Hastie Road after a resident reported that a transformer in the area had made a loud noise at the time the power went out. This enabled the crews to quickly replace the lightning arrestor and restore power to all customers by 3.40pm. Ergon Energy apologised for any inconvenience this power supply interruption caused.

crease for next six month period, however is concerned with the upcoming costs such as the bulk water increases, de-amalgamation cost and the sewerage plant upgrade,” he said. “We encourage the MSC to work toward a minimum impact on the local community and to source funding from State Government to assist in funding some of these costs. The Chamber will work with the Council in dealing with these challenges. “ The budget contains a $10.796 million capital works program and returned an operating surplus of $1.685 million. Key capital works projects include: almost $5 million for road projects including $1.5 million to upgrade the Boonmoo/Mt Garnet Road, $400,000 to extend the Mareeba Gymnastics Hall and $800,000 for the new Kuranda Visitor Information Centre. New course paves the way for trainees By Boyd Robertson Tableland students entering Year 12 will be able legally drive by the end of the year, but only a select few will be able to operate titanic construction machines like excavators and front-end loaders. The trainees undertaking the second year of their Certificate III in Civil Construction and Plant Operation with Construction and Machinery Training School (CMTS) at Redcorp Quarry near Mareeba, however, will be able to do just that. CMTS’s ten trainees, most of whom are aged 17-18, are now halfway through their two-year certification course, with many already logging several hundred hours on vehicles like excavators and heavy dump trucks – while also balancing Year 12 studies on the other four days of the week. While their peers might be stopping and stalling during driving tests, the trainees are already piloting massive machines to crush through solid rock, excavate massive holes and haul serious tonnage around – and they are doing it safely and confidently, according to their instructors Phil Hogan and Zeb Luhrs.

“These guys are really putting in a massive effort and they are honestly surprising us with how fast they are picking it up,” said Phil. “They are showing knowledge beyond their years and we’re fully expecting most, if not all of them, to finish this with their certificates of competency in hand. “Their work ethic is impressive as well – we’ve had a 100 per cent attendance rate since they began, even with guys coming all the way from places like Herberton and elsewhere.” Zeb, who makes the final decision on if a trainee is qualified to operate a machine, also said the students are impressing him. “I can put most of these kids into a digger (excavator), let them go at a site and just watch them fill four or five buckets in nothing flat,” he said. “These can very dangerous machines if they’re not handled properly but the guys are already showing us that they can use them safely, efficiently and with timeliness.” In addition to learning to use the heavy vehicles the trainees are also being taught engine repair and many other necessary skills for working in the civil construction industry. When they are finished they will either be offered jobs in CMTS’s parent company Redcorp or given excellent recommendations for other companies. The trainees are ‘graduating’ in November but Zeb said each will be judged competent or not individually over the course of the year. “Every day is an exam here,” he said. Figures from the Department of Education, Training and Employment show that 31,813 students received a Vocational Training and Education Certificate I, II, II, or IV qualification in 2013.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The truth about life on the land I feel the media is constantly implying that graziers and primary producers are receiving benefits and “assistance” hand over fist, but this is not the case. We frequently hear comments that there is natural disaster assistance, flood assistance, drought assistance, etc, all readily available but, in reality, the only assistance truly accessible is low interest loans and only some graziers are eligible for these. Most grants and rebates are so finely scrutinized and detailed, that one small element renders you ineligible. Should we be well off enough to outlay the expenses prior to submitting an application for a percentage refund, DRAS rebates are capped at $20,000. This amount does not even cover the cost of one semi trailer load of lick/supplement blocks. The drought package is designed to help stricken graziers who still might have some money. They offer a 50 per cent rebate of

freight on feed or lick for livestock which can be claimed after the invoices have been paid, but no subsidy on the actual feed itself. They offer a 50 per cent rebate on water infrastructure installed for drought affected livestock however this can also only be claimed after the initial investment from the property owner. It costs the graziers dearly to transport stock to agistment, without any rebates offered to take them there. There is an insulting tongue-in-cheek rebate offered for a percentage only reimbursement of freight spent to bring stock home from drought agistment. It would be great for the media and urban folk to have the whole story. The government package is only designed for the financially secure and leaves the majority of graziers in total devastation on their own. We are one of the very few families who have been granted a lifesaving reprieve by temporary agistment allow-

ance on Blackbraes Resource Reserve. Without this we would also be going under. Although only a limited number of properties have access to such a solution, this scenario is a win-win arrangement which puts no financial demand on the government or the tax payer, as well as saving the lives of untold numbers of suffering livestock and graziers. Recently, we assisted other graziers muster their cattle off the lush, substantially grassed National Park next door as they were forced to take their cattle off by December 31, 2013. Some were lucky enough to be sold – I dare not ask at what prices - but the others had to be trucked – in the intense heat - back home to a starvation paddock and certain miserable demise. The (former cattle station) now National Park was fortunate enough to receive a normal wet season unlike most of Queensland and has abundant fodder going to waste. The Rangers in charge have been incredibly helpful and have gone far above and beyond their call of duty and worked tirelessly to assist the graziers to sustainably utilize the fodder readily available on the land they (the rangers) are responsible and care for. Without grazing in the National Parks, intense, destructive wildfires are inevitable. These dedicated Rangers are expected to deal with the infernos by unnaturally burning out of season to reduce fuel or fighting storm lit, perilous

flames to save not only the National Parks and the wildlife therein, but also the neighbouring properties. By limited grazing of stock, these hazardous fires can be brought to a manageable, environmentally friendly level that sustains the ecosystems as nature intends. We dedicated graziers are devoted to the land and believe limited, controlled grazing is beneficial for the country and its native inhabitants. Des and Ineke McDowall Perryvale Station via Einasleigh Dairy industry problems run deep The excellent article ‘Decline of the dairy industry’, The Express, January 15, page 5 provides insight into the ailing Tableland dairy industry. As a retired dairy farmer myself, I commiserate with dedicated farmers like Dennis Byrnes. Perhaps, however, the factors for the stricken industry go far deeper than the reasons Mr Byrnes asserts. It is the production system employed mainly which lies at the heart of the industy’s demise. The supermarkets are merely stimulating sales through their discounts, and the declining terms of trade were well evidenced before deregulation occurred. Fundamental changes are required for milk producers in the area of fertilizer selection and usage in order to create significant reductions in the unit cost of production. It will be found that these changes

will greatly increase the farm carrying capacity, improve livestock health and the quality of milk they produce, particularly in the area of the molecular compositional integrity of the milk’s protein. Geoff Downey Mareeba Training a must for new council In response to ‘Change to MSC protocol’, The Express, page one, January 22. Perhaps the first priority for the new CEO of Mareeba Shire Council, Mr Peter Franks will be to source Governance and leadership training for all the newly elected councillors. I did not elect the Mayor and councillors to micro-manage the CEO and staff, I elected them to lead our shire forward to a renewed position of growth, prosperity and community renewal. Patricia Berry Mareeba Flying flags stir pride In regards to Australia Day. As a patriot and defender of our Aussie flag in the past, this year I must give credit where it is due. Anyone passing through the central business area of the town on Australia Day could only be impressed by not one, but two brand new Australian Flags in full flight on the poles in Anzac Park. They made a wondrous sight. Elwyn Troughton Mareeba

Funding for festival By Ryan Groube

Atherton residents Tim and Leanne Narbrough, along with neighbours Lyn Byrne and Roseann Green, want the Tablelands Regional Council to finish sealing a section of Aerodrome Road.

‘Finish the job’ residents ask TRC By Boyd Robertson A group of Atherton residents are calling on the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) to finish works on an unsealed road that is virtually burying their homes in dust. The group includes property owners on Mountain View Drive who they say their houses are regularly blanketed in thick yellow dust from a still-unsealed 250-metre section of the access road to the Atherton Aerodrome, while the rest of the facility has been fully upgraded with bitumen surfaces. The TRC launched the upgrade of the aerodrome midway through 2012 using funds from a $75,000 Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) grant. The TMR grant, however, was not sufficient for the entire project, meaning council was forced to use its own money to complete bitumen sealing around the aerodrome and leave the access road unfinished. Group spokesperson Tim Narbrough said dust blew constantly from the unsealed road directly onto the residents’ properties, making enjoying their own back yards impossible. “We can’t open our windows, we can’t go onto the back patio – everything is completely covered in the dust, it’s in the air and you’re forced to breathe it in,” he said. “It was tolerable before the upgrade

when there was only a little traffic but now there are regular trucks along the road and every one stirs up huge clouds of it, especially the big ones carrying fuel for the planes - we don’t understand how they can bitumen the parts between the end of the road and the hangars so people can get to their planes easily but not finish this bit right next to it. “We want to make it clear that we aren’t opposed to the upgrade of the aerodrome, which we think is a very important project – we just want council to finish the job it started.” The residents appeared at the January 16 council meeting to voice their complaints, where they were met with scepticism from Division 6 councillor Marjorie Pagani. “We’ve got dozens if not hundreds of roads all across our area that are in need of sealing so we have to prioritise which ones we pay attention to,” Cr Pagani said during the meeting. “If this road is only affecting a few people it’s not fair to others to push them to the front of the queue, so to speak.” TRC Mayor said council would look at the issue but made no promises when it came to sealing the road. “In addition to the lack of grant funds there are other issues to be resolved in regard to vehicle access between the aerodrome and the highway before any further decision is made,” she said.

ONE of Mareeba’s most popular social events has been granted funding surety by the State Government. Previously, the Mareeba Multicultural Festival had to apply for funding to hold the free day-long event each year. On January 29, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes travelled to Mareeba to announce the festival would receive funding two years in advance. “There are a number of multicultural festivals across the state that are growing really well and this one here in Mareeba is one of those,” he said. “These functions that communities across Queensland put on are an opportunity for people to mingle with, and get to know, the array of Member for Cook David Kempton, Mareeba Multicultural Festival cultures that make up their commu- committee member Ramkrishna Kolala and Minister for Multiculnity. tural Affairs Glen Elmes “Not only will we announce funding for this festival early so the portant Mareeba is as a diverse regional centre. committee can keep in front of their planning we have MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said multiculturalism had also increased its funding from $7000 to $15,000.” always been a great asset and strength of the district and The announcement, which was held at the Mareeba that the Mareeba Multicultural Festival was the showShire Council (MSC) office in Mabel Street, was also piece event in celebrating that diversity. attended by Mareeba Multicultural Festival commit“Here in this region, particularly in Mareeba and tee member Ramkrishna Kolala and Member for Cook Dimbulah, we have this potpourri of culture and it is an David Kempton. extremely rich culture,” he said. When young Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is sent away to live with adoptive parents Rosa (Emily Watson) and Hans (Geoffrey Rush) in a small German town during the war, she befriends Rudy (Nico Liersch) a boy her own age. Just as she learns to read for the first time, thanks to Hans, a young Jewish man, Max, (Ben Schnetzer), turns up seeking refuge and is hidden in the cellar. Here, Liesel reads to Max, who encourages her to read and also to write. Inevitably, the war disrupts this arrangement - and indeed, Liesel's whole life.

THE RAILWAY MAN

English soldier and railway enthusiast Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) is captured among the thousands of Allied prisoners after the 1942 fall of Singapore in World War II and forced to work on building the ThaiBurma railway. When a secret radio receiver he builds with fellow prisoners is discovered, he is severely beaten and tortured, leaving him traumatised for many years. Years later, in 1980, on one of his many rail journeys in England, he meets Patti (Nicole Kidman) and they fall in love - but his ongoing nightmares and his refusal to speak about his torment impact on her, and their otherwise loving marriage. Patti is determined to help Eric slay his demons, and with help from army friend Finlay (Stellan Skarsgaard), they discover that the young Japanese soldier who was one of his torturers is very much alive, working as a tour guide at the railway museum. JACK RYAN – SHADOW RECRUIT

In his pre-CIA days, Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) is working on Wall Street as a financial analyst until recruited by the CIA's William Harper (Kevin Costner) to investigate global financial terrorism. When a plot that could sink the US economy is uncovered, Jack is pushed into the field, to travel to Moscow and con-

ed to thank Michael and Maggie Lee for their generosity and allowing them the opportunity to fundraise at the Chinese New Year celebrations, as well as the businesses and individuals who donated prizes and the community who digs deep to support this worthy cause each year. Fireworks was a highlight of the night with music by John Hardy. Major Prizes Winners of Saturday night were: Chainsaw donated by Chano Trentin – winner Peter Brady of Mareeba. front the Russian businessman Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh) behind it. Review by Louise Keller: A terrorist attack and the collapse of the US economy is the plot trigger for this fastpaced, action thriller in which Chris Pine assumes the latest screen incarnation of Tom Clancy's heroic analyst, Jack Ryan. A lean 105 minutes is the result of an economical script and tight direction from Kenneth Branagh, who crams a satisfying mix of top action and good character development, ensuring that the dynamics of a meaningful romantic relationship plus that of a cold, calculating villain sit at interesting angles. As for Pine, he ticks all the boxes in his portrayal of the decent, heroic covert CIA desk analyst turned operative, with the added bonus of dashing good looks and piercing blue eyes as he follows Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in the role. It's good escapist action with a likeable hero to whom we can relate and enough points of difference to give it an edge. As the action escalates, so too does the frenetic nature of the music and the editing - at times to the film's detriment. There is a smoke and mirrors element about the technological aspects of the plot - if only technology worked so easily for me - but no matter and I maintain that anyone who has a desk as tidy as Viktor Cherevin should be regarded with great suspicion. But this is a Tom Clancy character and there is much to enjoy in this easy-to-like thriller that races to its heart-pounding and spectacular conclusion is fitting style.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY The day-dreaming Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) escapes his dull, anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job is at risk, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have imagined.

I arrived at the refuge with my mum and 2 siblings when I was just tiny. My brother , sister and mother were stunners and found homes quickly, but because I am fairly ordinary looking, I have missed out. I am, however, a gorgeous personality and must find a home soon before it is too late!!

Kiara wows judges

Mareeba’s Kiara Cabassi

Photo: Reflections Photography

Search for a Superstar was held at Cairns Central Shopping Centre during the school holidays, running heats for junior and senior sections daily for a week from Monday to Friday. One winner of each heat was chosen to perform again on Saturday January 18, for a chance to win great prizes. Mareeba local, Kiara Cabassi, performed ‘Skinny Love’ in the senior heat on Friday and won (13-17 years old). Kiara wowed the judges who couldn't believe the maturity of her voice for one so young and how she was able to control her voice to produce light and shade when needed to provide an outstanding performance. In the final Kiara performed Adele's ‘Someone like You’ taking out the Judges Choice award winning a $500 recording contract donated by Pegasus Studios in Cairns.

Interactive garden a hit with students There were very few tears for St Anthony’s students when they returned to school last week and found the brand new Interactive Garden looking spectacular. The Interactive garden was a result of funding submissions to create a garden that students could enjoy discovering things. The garden features musical instruments. Activities soon to be introduced are “digging for dinosaur bones” and “touchy feely boxes” and exploring with giant magnifying glasses. Principal of St Anthony’s School,

Mrs Katrina Miller said that “The Interactive Garden added to the aesthetic value of the school which is an added bonus as it was intended to provide students who find academic learning a little difficult with an alternative place and manner in which to learn. The garden is part of our long-term plans to add features to the school grounds and buildings in order to nurture the development of the ‘whole child’ which is an essential part of 21st century education and the essence of Catholic Education.”

A girl and her horse

Kristie Lane with her Australia Day award which she received for her sustained equestrian success with her horse Liquorice

By Ryan Groube Kristy Lane and her beloved horse Liquorice are quite the team. In the years the two have been teaming up for riding competitions across Queensland, Kristy has collected enough blue ribbons for a crafty aunty to stitch them together into a blanket. On Australia Day, Liquorice had a mellow morning at pasture at the Lane family’s Speewah home oblivious to the fact Kristy had just been named the Mareeba Shire Council’s Junior Sportsperson of the Year at an awards ceremony at the International Club. The 14-year-old Mareeba State High School student won the award after a bumper 2013 that saw her cement her place as one of the most promising young showjumping, sporting and gymkhana riders in Queensland. In gymkhana and sporting events riders compete in a series of eight different events over the course of a day. Points are tallied and an overall champion is crowned at the end of the event. Gymkhana events have a focus on technique, appearance and precision while sporting events typically are judged on the speed in which an event is completed.

Showjumping is a timed event that sees riders jump a series of obstacles with the height of jumps for 14-year-olds set at 1.1 metres. In April 2013, Kristy competed in the Queensland State Championships in Beaudesert before travelling to Rockhampton for the gymkhana and sporting State Championships in October. At both State Championships she recorded top 10 finishes. To compete at the championships riders have to qualify by recording four “qualification scores” at sanctioned events throughout the season. In addition to her riding commitments, Kristy actively helps out at the Kuranda Horse and Pony Club, where her Mum Fionna sits on the committee, and last year raised more than $6000 as part of the Pony Club Association of Queensland’s annual princess competition. She said she had been delighted at being nominated for the Australia Day award but didn’t think she had any chance of winning. “I thought there were so many other people out there who had done more than I had so it came as a big shock to me,” she said. “When they read out the award Mum had to tell me ‘that’s your name’. It made me think ‘Wow, I did do a lot last year’”. The Lane family moved from Cairns to a rural property at Spee-

wah just over 10 years ago. Kristy’s father Brenton constructed a small-scale practice ring in the backyard for his daughter who practices three times during the week and “usually on the weekends”. “When we break things Dad gets to fix them,” Kristy laughed. “I like to get out there when I can just as long as I don’t have too much homework. “It is quite a tough sport and you have to be on the ball with everything so there is a lot of training involved.” In 2014, Kristy hopes to return to the State Championships in all her disciplines. Kristy already has two qualification scores in the bag in the leadup to the gymkhana and sporting championships due which will be held in Julia Creek in October. She is also planning to attend the show jumping State Championships in Yeppon in April. After she has finished school, Kristy hopes to become a veterinarian but said owning her own riding school was a good fall back. Kristy was nominated for the award by the owners of Kuranda’s Kangazims Cafe.

Basketball bronze

A representative basketball team, which included four players from Mareeba, has claimed a bronze medal at the Under 18s Queensland State Championships. The Mulgrave team consisted of: Zac and Ben and Josh McAulay, Daniel Ruggeri, Daniel Putt, Ayden Smith, Lochlan Anthony, Brock Hawke and Lindell Heron. The boys rode a three game unbeaten streak to qualify for the semi-finals where they were defeated by Ipswich. In the playoff for third, the boys staged a huge comeback to pip the team from Ipswich in a thriller.

Behind by 10 points with less than four minutes on the clock, Zac McAulay took control scoring six points to get Mulgrave back into the game. A free throw by Ayden Smith was enough to ice the game 66-65. The Mulgrave team was cobbled together with members from smaller towns across the far north that didn’t have enough members to form their own State Championship teams. A spokesperson from Mareeba Basketball Association said they wanted to thank Mulgrave for allowing its boys to participate, with special thanks to team coach Murray Smith.

Mareeba United Football Club Inc.

JUNIOR & SENIOR SIGN-ON NIGHT

Mareeba State School students Anthea Oakley, Isabell Oui, Jaclyn France, Jett Apps and Sam Hollins had a blast trying soccer for the first time in the inflatable court set up on their school’s oval by the Mareeba Bulls last week

Tiny soccer players, giant inflatable net

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) is inviting local kids to try soccer at a sign-on event to be held at Borzi Park on Friday night. The club set up a giant inflatable soccer field at Mareeba State School (MSS) on Friday and was to deploy the device at St Thomas of Villanova’s Primary School on Monday in a bid to draw youngsters into the sport. MUFC committee member Sandro Soncin said the inflatable field, rented from Edge Hill Soccer Club, was used to introduce a ‘novelty factor’ and boost curiosity about the sport. “We’re finding that the field has a bit of a ‘wow’ factor to it – kids are obviously very keen to get in and have a look and we’re hoping that

they find playing soccer inside it is a lot of fun,” he said. “Obviously we are looking for as many new players to sign on as possible on the Friday night but if we get more than 100 signing up we’ll be very happy with that – if it’s more than 150 it’ll be fantastic and we are expecting at least 100 to come along. “We are setting the field up again at Borzi Park on the night and hopefully this will help show the kids how much fun they can have with soccer – it’s a great non-contact game that boys and girls can play, no matter how big or small they are.” The field proved to be popular and was swamped with MSS students during lunch breaks, but PE teacher Daniel Samanes said soccer was already a thriving at the school.

Call for refs

The Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) Referees Association has launched a recruitment drive to solve the problem of low numbers for 2014 junior and senior competitions across the region. With trial and regular season games, along with rugby league carnivals, taking place between February and November, referee resources in Far North Queensland have been stretched like never before. CDRL Referees Association spokesperson Pete Mackinnon said there was now a great opportunity for those with a love of rugby league to become an official. “There are so many great things about refereeing, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who is considering it,” Mr Mackinnon, the current CDRL Referee of the Year, said. “You’ve got the best seat in the house, right in the middle of the action, and it’s great for your fitness. “You can also make good money refereeing junior and senior level games, and the travel is great. Mr Mackinnon said teenagers and adults, men and women, are encouraged to apply, and referees for all levels including junior and seniors are needed. For more information, contact Pete Mackinnon on 0416 318 875, or email djpetemac@hotmail.com

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“Without fail there’s soccer matches going on both fields and an indoor soccer match happening inside in the hall every single lunch time,” he said. “The kids absolutely love it and the teachers often play alongside them.” A taste of the World Game inside the inflatable field was more than enough to convince MSS student Jett Apps, 5, to give soccer a proper try. “I want to go and sign up now,” he said. “I played a bit of footy before this and I think soccer is more fun because I don’t have to kick the ball up in the air – I’m not very good at that. “I think it’s lots of fun.” MUFC have a strong tradition of bringing juniors through the ranks through to their top premier division teams.
