hat should be a pristine spot next to a river was turned into a rubbish tip by an illegal dumper who decided to throw out five truckloads of waste. Late last week, Mareeba Shire Council received a report of a large amount of rubbish found dumped along the Granite Creek bed, near the Granite Bridge. Mareeba Shire Council Environmental Health officers investigated the site and found a substantial amount of unwanted items, including car jacks, kitchenware, pots and pans, fishing gear, books and DVDs. A clean-up crew was organised because the unwanted goods were starting to pollute the waterway. To clean the site up, it took a work crew of five men over four hours to cart five truckloads of waste to the dump. Mayor Tom Gilmore described the dumping as “a deliberate act of vandalism” and stressed that the person would be found and prosecuted. He wanted to remind residents of the shire that there are no fees for dumping domestic waste at Mareeba’s landfills. “I am absolutely disappointed that anybody would treat our community so badly, whether it was in a fit of pique or just absolute stupidity, one will never know that,” Mayor Gilmore said. “For somebody to be so appallingly stupid is just beyond comprehension.” MSC was perusing the offender of this latest dumping incident for all associated clean-up costs. Council officers uncovered documents identifying the owner of the goods. In addition to this, witness statements and vehicle registration details were able to place the offender at the scene. Council officers were continuing their investigations using their powers under the Waste Reduction Recycling Act 2011 to take action against this act of Illegal Dumping. Mareeba Shire Council has stated that offenders who carry out this type of behaviour will be caught and prosecuted. Furthermore any clean-up costs relating to the incident will also be recovered from the offender.

WAR widows and ex-service women were beaming with joy when the Crazy Crafters Quilting Group gave them heart-warming gifts. Ex-service woman Jo Goulding was grateful for the hard work of the group, which produced intricate and colourful quilts. Mrs Goulding had served during World War Two in the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service, but she still felt undeserving of the Crazy Crafters’ gift. “We feel so honoured because we haven’t done anything special,” she said. “I might put the quilt on show because it is so pretty and feminine.” Coordinator Lynda Miller has gifted quilts before to hospitals and soldiers, but this event held special significance because she was able to see people’s reactions. “It’s lovely to see the look on their faces and they are looking at everyone else’s quilts, as well, it is so sweet,” she said.

The Man Up! team meets with Chris Ryan from Bendigo Bank, at the Masonic Centre, during their stop in Atherton.
Man up for health
By Katherine Kokkonen CLASSIC cars aren’t usually associated with health, but the two have come together as part of a campaign to raise awareness of prostate cancer. A fleet of classic cars rolled through Atherton on Thursday as part of the Man Up! tour of 37 towns in 37 days. The tour aimed to raise public awareness of prostate cancer, its detection, treatment and the need for a better support program for men living with the disease. Freemasons throughout the state were supporting the event through their new charity, Hand Heart Pocket, which aims to improve lives by providing funding in the areas of health research, education, positive aging and crisis support.
Man Up! Co-founder and Director Jill Costello said the response to the tour had been wonderful and if she had helped just one man take better care of his health it would have all been worth it. In Atherton, the tour vehicles, a 1924 Dodge Ute and a 1942 Dodge Carry All, were joined by more classic cars from the Cairns and District Historic Vehicle Club. Mrs Costello said the use of classic cars on tour had been a great icebreaker and led to more men approaching the group. “The men start to look and they start to talk about the cars and then they always go, ‘what’s man up?’,” she said. “We find that the men know they need support. Men with prostate cancer have a lot to deal with: they have incontinence, sexual dysfunction, depression—
they commit suicide four times the national average of their peers.” Mrs Costello believed that because men with prostate cancer endure such a heavy burden access to a dedicated prostate cancer care nurse would be invaluable. She said a prostate care nurse would be able to provide on-going constant support and information for men, which would provide sufferers with a sense of stability and comfort. “They would use it and it would be just what they need,” Mrs Costello said. “We leave these men after treatment and we say, ‘Ok, done all the hard work, off you go, do the best you can’. Well, the best you can is not too good on your own. My favourite saying is: ‘together we can make a difference’.”

Aquis comes to Mareeba MAREEBA Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch with Aquis representatives to give community members more information about how the project will affect them. While talk about Aquis has been primarily focused on the coast, President Joe Moro said if the project were to go ahead there would be a flow-on effect across the Tablelands. “This will have a significant change to Cairns and the Far North Queensland area in terms of size and impact of the project,” he said. “The opportunities for economic growth are phenomenal and if it goes ahead there will be some flow-on effects and it will have impacts right across the Tablelands. It is important for people that are interested to come along and be open minded.” The lunch will be held on September 24, 12pm, at Mareeba Memorial Bowls Club. RSVP by noon on Monday, September 22 by calling the Chamber of Commerce on 4092 6050 or by emailing admin@mareebachamber.com.au.
Angel Flight founding member Marjorie Pagani is worried the charity will be grounded if the Civil Aviation Safety Authority imposes more bureaucracy on them. By Katherine Kokkonen Angel Flight might have its wings clipped if the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) imposes an extra regulatory layer on the not-for-profit organisation. Angel Flight provides a free service for remote people who need to travel long distances to attain medical treatment, but all of this could end if CASA gets its way. CASA released a paper in order to stimulate discussion about how community service flights should be regulated. The paper outlined CASA’s preferred option, which would involve the establishment of an Approved Self-administering Aviation Organisation. Angel Flight founding member Marjorie Pagani said this would require
Angel Flight to be responsible for taskspecific pilot training, pilot and aircraft assessment, proficiency checking of pilots, monitoring pilot currency and pilot and aircraft tasking. She believed that Angel Flight would have to stop operating due to the enormous cost involved with becoming an aviation organisation. “This would strangle our charity with red tape,” Ms Pagani said. “Federal bureaucrats are inflicting unjustified and costly red tape on our charity that could blast us out of the sky. There is no way we could continue.” Ms Pagani said that nowhere in the discussion paper did CASA raise any serious safety concerns and that all of Angel Flight’s 2,700 volunteer pilots already operate under stringent federal regulations. Angel Flight also requires pilots to have at least 250 hours in command be-
Red tape threatens to ground Angel Flight fore they are able to volunteer for the charity. Angel Flight provides a service for passengers who need to travel for medical treatment. They also operate “compassionate flights”, such as taking family members to visit sick relatives, but they do not do emergency flights. In the decade the charity has been operating, they have flown more than 16,800 missions and delivered more than $50 million worth of free aerial services. “We will fight these unworkable and nonsensical CASA proposals for the sake of the tens of thousands of needy people who rely on Angel Flight,” Ms Pagani said. “I’ve never been a quitter. Angel Flight must win or disadvantaged and isolated Australians will lose and that would be heartbreaking.” For the people on the ground who
have relied on Angel Flight, the possibility of CASA being responsible for the charity closing its doors is perplexing. Susan Robyn Brown, from Cape York, accessed Angel Flight over a 12 month period, starting in 2013. She described the service they provided her as being essential in helping her access breast cancer treatment in Cairns. Her treatment required her to go to Cairns every three weeks, which would have required a six hour drive, a two night stay and six hour return journey. “Without them I don’t think I could have done it because I would have been too tired,” she said. “They would come and pick me up at the closest cattle station and take me down to Cairns. The pilot would quite often be the one who took me to the hospital. They were magnificent and they saved my life.”
Funding comes through for sewage plan tal Protection Agency effluent standards for at least 20 years. He said due to the cost and scope of the project Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has been in discussions with Member for Cook David Kempton in regards to funding.
“The vast cost of this kind of infrastructure is essentially beyond the capacity of a small community to carry,” Mayor Gilmore said. “This is the most important health and environmental issue in the whole of the Tablelands region.”

Book Club unites readers By Katherine Kokkonen
Avid readers have come together to form a book club at the Mareeba Library.
READING no longer has to be a solitary passion, with Mareeba Library hosting a book club for people to unite over their love of stories. The Mareeba Book Club launched earlier this month with eight readers coming together to socialise and choose the first book to read. Book Club coordinator Andrea Crooks said more readers were always welcome to join
the book club and the program will be run across Mareeba Shire Libraries. Mareeba library will host the book club meetings once a month and provide a relaxed environment for conversation to flow. “It’s for people to get together and chatting about a book—it’s for people who love books,” Ms Crooks said. Helen Holman agreed with Ms Crooks and said she joined the book club so she could share her passion.
“This about the joy of reading a book and sharing your enjoyment with others,” she said. Mareeba Book Club members have shown they have a sense of humour by choosing The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe to read before their next meeting. For more information, head into Mareeba Library, go to http://msc.qld.gov.au/library-services/ or call Andrea Crooks on 4086 4624.

Yungaburra community member Ros Lauder next to the post which will have an additional plaque to honour soldiers from the Yungaburra Rifle Club.
Plaque of honour By Katherine Kokkonen Volunteers have been researching the history of a group of mostly forgotten soldiers, in the hope of finally getting them recognition. The group has been delving into the history of 49 men of the Yungaburra Rifle Club who were called to join the Naval and Military Expeditionary force during World War One. Many of the soldiers went to Thursday Island and onto German New Guinea, but for some the ship they were on, The Kanowna, was turned back to Australia before they could go on to capture Rabaul. They arrived back in Australia in September 1914 and some immediately joined the AIF. Over the course of the war, some of them went on to fight and die in the battle fields of Gallipoli, Europe and the Middle East. The group’s hard work has paid off with a plaque inscribed with the names of the soldiers to be installed at the
Yungaburra War Memorial. The group will host a symbolic welcome home and farewell function on Friday, starting at 6.30pm at Lake Eacham Hotel. Donations will be taken to raise the $860 needed for the plaque. Community member Ros Lauder was glad the soldiers will finally be honoured for their service to Australia. “This means that little bit of history that we had largely forgotten about is recorded,” she said. “I still get choked up about it. Some of them were only 22 or 23, some of them were middle-aged men who went, but they all seemed to think this was a really important thing to do.” The group has been unable to fully trace Robert Bruce, Charles Burge, Phil Richard Clarke, William R Fletcher, Thomas James, James Davis Nelson and James Chas Roberts. If you have any information, contact Ros Lauder on 4095 2228 or find the Yungaburra Rifle Club 1914 on Facebook.

A colourful celebration of life By Katherine Kokkonen NUNS, cookie monsters and jockeys were out in force at the Relay for Life, in Mareeba, on the weekend. The event brought out the community’s artistry and the 25 participating teams made the most of the occasion, donning creative costumes. More than 350 participants registered for Relay for Life bringing with them a festive atmosphere to Davies Park. The event kicked off with an inspiring opening ceremony, with more than 60 survivors and carers complet-
ing the very first lap of the grounds before having a special afternoon tea provided by the Leagues Club. Relay for Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan said they hoped to raise more than $80,000 for Cancer Council Queensland over the weekend. “If we get over $85,00 we will beat last year’s total, which would be fantastic,” she said. “There are lots of young kids, as well, which is fantastic to see. It’s great to see the community get behind us.” For more photos, head to The Express Newspaper Facebook page.

Politicians take on the challenge By Katherine Kokkonen MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and Member for Cook David Kempton received a frosty reception at the Relay for Life, but it was all for a good cause. Mayor Gilmore and Mr Kempton took on the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and funds for MND Australia. Mayor Gilmore was nominated to take on the challenge by his friend and Mayor of Toowoomba Regional Council, Paul Antonio, whose wife suffers from the disease.
“I think there are some things that you do because it’s valuable not only to the local community but it’s valuable to him (Paul Antonio) and his wife to think that somebody else cares enough to take up the challenge and I’m happy to do that,” Mayor Gilmore said. Mayor Gilmore roped in Mr Kempton to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, but he was a bit sneaky in the way he got him involved. “It’s interesting the way Tom did this because he left it on my voicemail and I hadn’t actually spoken to him and then he carried on as if that was an acceptance,”

Cr Hodge responds to Marnane Road concerns I write re your front page article of 10 September, to correct the record on this matter in accord with my knowledge of it. Marnane Road was part of two entirely separate Items considered at the Tablelands Regional Council meeting on 4 September 2014. Item 9 considered Round Four of the Royalties to the Regions program and in particular, a requirement from the State Government that Council prioritise projects put forward for potential funding from this scheme. Council voted to prioritise the Tinaroo Sewerage Treatment Plant, construction of a trucking pad at Tumoulin and the upgrade of Brooks Road, Jue Sue

Road, Peakes Gully drainage, Beantree Road and Marnane Road. It is important to note that the State has specified it will consider projects on merit and against set criteria, not on how Council has prioritised them Road and drainage issues are, I believe, a major concern for Council and I am delighted that Council voted to prioritise so many for this potential funding stream, although the final decision on this is, of course, a matter for the State Government. Separately, the specific issue of providing a section of seal on Marnane Road in response to a request from Mr Cescotto was considered as Item 24. As is clear from the agenda, the design of an upgrade for Marnane Road from the junction from Fraser Road through to the existing culvert at Rocky Creek

(which includes the area at Mr Cescotto’s property) has already been funded in Council’s 2014-15 Budget. At the September 4, meeting Council did not vote to reject Mr Cescotto’s offer, nor did it reject the need to upgrade Marnane Road. Instead, Council voted receive and note Mr Cescotto’s offer and to wait for funding for upgrading Marnane Road to be identified. There was a discussion with him, undertaken at his request, about his issues with Marnane Road and following those discussions, a letter from him came to Council. At his meeting with myself and the Mayor, no promises were made to Mr Cescotto about his issues, other than that they would be taken to Council and that is what happened. I believe Council is in fact working hard to resolve Marnane Road’s ongoing issues – including those affecting Mr Cescotto – as professionally and as efficiently as possible. Councillor Peter Hodge.

We are all residents who are negatively impacted by the disgraceful state of Marnane Road, in Tolga. Cr Marjorie Pagani has been agitating on our behalf for two years to have this abysmal track improved. It is badly corrugated, potholed, has constant washouts across the road that are very damaging to our vehicles, has dangerous road edges, and creates an enormous dust problem, all the way up to the homes on lower Rangeview. The traffic has increased substantially during the past year, with increased farming activity, heavy vehicles, machinery, and increased passenger vehicle numbers. Whilst we welcome the productivity associated with the traffic, we call upon the council to honour its funding priorities for this road. We have been following council meetings with interest, and are appalled at the treatment being dished out to us by the Mayor and Crs Hodge and Stocker. Last week they voted against a request from Mr Cescotto for some limited work to be done: he had even offered to contribute substantial funds for the sealing of a section of Marnane Road in front of his home. He and his elderly wife suffer from appalling levels of dust in their home, and have been trying for decades to have some work done. Then, to add insult to injury, they voted to put Marnane Road at the very bottom of the funding request to government under the Royalties for Regions program (and that was after some debate by Crs Pagani and Marti—the initial resolution proposed by Cr Stocker left out Marnane Road altogether!). But they also voted to elevate funding for Jue Sue Road to No. 2 on the road funding list—despite Jue Sue Road being NUMBER 38 on the council’s own road prioritisation tool, and Marnane Road being NUMBER 10. How did this road jump from 38 to 2? And why? At previous meetings the general manager has confirmed the prioritisation is accurate – Marnane Road is 28 places AHEAD of Jue Sue Road. Even Cr Marti voted in favour of Marnane – recognising that it is a higher priority even though Jue Sue is in his division. We demand answers from the Mayor and these two councillors. Why are Tolga residents suffering this continuing injustice? Please explain. The school holidays are here and there is plenty of fun for the family on the Rising Sun screen. This Saturday, September 20, is a very special day at the cinema, as it celebrates its first birthday. There are free giveaways and birthday cake for all who come to make a day of it. It's been a year of movie excitement since The Rising Sun started providing the people of Mareeba with a first class latest release movie venue and there's heaps more great film entertainment coming to the Mareeba big screen in the next few months as we lead into 2015. Megan Fox and Whoopi Goldberg are the big name stars in the action packed TEENAGE MU-
TANT NINJA TURTLES, whilst PLANES FIRE AND RESCUE, is the big new film, starting on Thursday. It continues the Planes franchise, providing colourful entertainment for all ages. Also starting on Thursday is IF I STAY, a moving drama that will provide riveting viewing due to it's content. As it's the holidays, there's heaps of extra shows – check the advert every week session times. There's also one last chance to see the excellent feel good film HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY, starring Helen Mirren, and the unique LUCY, today Wednesday, September 17. Plus come along and help us celebrate this weekend. Los Angeles”) in Bay’s patented more-is-more style. There’s even one crazy, extended chase involving Foot Clan vehicles, our heroes and an 18-wheeler all sliding down a snowy mountainside that makes turtle power start to seem infectious again.

Zingo 100% Pure Mango
(It’s pure, it’s natural, it’s real mango, but best of all its totally local!) Mareeba passionate mango growers, John & Debbie Nucifora developed a pure mango frozen fruit stick called Zingo. The Nucifora’s installed a freezing & packaging facility at their mango farm in Mareeba in 2012 and started on the development of their product. Handmade from only the freshest, locally grown & hand-picked mangoes. The mangoes are then peeled & de-seeded by hand, and the luscious pulp is used to make Zingos. Ensuring the mango is used in its most natural form, the pure mango is not reconstituted or watered down. No preservatives or additives of any kind are added. There is only one ingredient in Zingo and that is real Australian mango straight from the farm. It really is 100% pure mango and nothing else! They are delicious & nutritious, likewise a great choice if you may be gluten, dairy or nut intolerant. Zingos taste so divine, you’d have to be forgiven, if you actually forget they are healthy. Zingo’s are currently available in North Queensland at various shops including health food shops, IGAs, swimming pools and tourist attractions. The goal would be to have them available Australia-wide and if this is achieved then the next goal would be world-wide. Local Farmers, Local Manufacturing & a Family Owned Local Business…

Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan. Review by Bruce Ingram: It’s pretty much business as usual: one personality trait per turtle (with the most screen time for party-dude Michelangelo), lots of wisecracks, plenty of thin-crust product placement (Pizza Hut this time around), and even a last-minute cowabunga. And, of course, tons of ninja-turtle combat action, amped up by director Jonathan Liebesman (“Battle

Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. Mia Hall thought the hardest decision she would ever face would be whether to pursue her musical dreams at Juilliard or follow a different path to be with the love of her life, Adam. But what should have been a carefree family drive changes everything in an instant, and now her own life hangs in the balance. Caught between life and death for one revealing day, Mia has only one decision left, which will not only decide her future but her ultimate fate.

Fruitful festivity By Katherine Kokkonen THE farming community came together for a night of laughs and to honour industry leaders at the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association Annual Gala Dinner. More than 350 people came together at the International Club, on Friday, to celebrate and have fun. The prestigious Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award was presented to Joe and Tony Bianco for their innovative approach to the industry. The Bianco brothers are pumpkin, cane and watermelon farmers and during the presentation they were praised for being pioneers of drip irrigation. While Joe Bianco knew he was a contender for the award, along with Howe Farming and Taste of the Tablelands, the win still came as a surprise. “We knew we were nominated but you never think you are actually
going to win it,” he said. President Joe Moro said while all three nominees deserved to win, the Bianco brothers were notable for being young farmers who were unafraid of a challenge. “What stood them out is that they are guys who had started out on their own and gone about building their reputation and their business on their own and doing it in a very innovative way,” he said. “They have also worked with the market and the buyers to deliver the product that they want.” Fresh Produce Group Commercial Director Dell Graham said the Bianco brothers were highly deserving of the award. He said customers, including a major supermarket, appreciated the Bianco brothers’ innovation and the high quality produce that results. “With the water conservation it is a more effective and efficient type of growing method and it is better qual-
ity fruit,” Mr Graham said. “It’s their growing methods and their attention to detail and they’re in love with their fruit. With this drip tape method they’re using, it allows for better water usage and better chemical usage and produces a cleaner fruit, which has good customer appeal. They are good to deal with and we have an honest relationship—they are straight shooters.” The Gala Dinner was an actionpacked night with attendees helping to raise $12,200 for the hospital through the fruit and vegetable auction. The money will be used for the Kindy and playground project. “Everyone seems to have had a good time and it’s been a good night,” Mr Moro said. “I think everybody has not thought about their businesses, they have just thought about their community and their fellow man and had a good time.”

Lot 10 – last lot available at Yarrabee Don’t miss the opportunity to build your dream home in Yarrabee. $15,000 Grant still available for First Homeowners. When you consider the advantages, the decision to build a new home over buying existing is an easy one. Better construction: Today’s technology of home building has improved tremendously over the past few decades and new homes are built better than ever before. Solidly constructed and well designed for today’s lifestyles. New homes are highly energy efficient, with new flooring products , roofing and windows, today’s building products work better, last longer and look better. The result is a brand new home that is far more comfortable and healthier, easier to maintain and more enjoyable to live in. Warranty: Existing homes do not come with a comprehensive warranty. If something goes wrong, you have to deal with it there and then, no matter what it costs. Buying a new home, on the other hand, offers peace of mind. Professional builders stand behind their work with a limited warranty. No Surprises: With a new home, there are no surprises when you move in. You know how the house was built and what went into it- what
you can see and what is hidden behind the walls. You also know exactly how to operate and maintain your home’s systems and equipment. If you have questions later, your builder will be there to give you a helpful and accurate answer. Your home from the start: With a new home, you can have what you want from the very start. From layout to cabinets to flooring, new home builders offer a wide selection of standard and up-grade options. You can pick and choose what suits your own lifestyle, needs and budget. Safety: Oueensland homes have hazards such as asbestos, lead based paint, leaking gas lines or faulty wiring. They may predate building codes that have improved and changed over the years. New Homes have been tested to meet the strictest of safety standards. Appreciation in Value: Virtually all new homes appreciate quickly. In most cases you can have instant equity in your new home the day you move in. With buying an existing home it can take years to build up equity in your home.\ Contact Debbie Sweedman on 0409 321 000, or visit us at the Land Sales Centre at Hastie Road, Mareeba.

Thrills at hockey finals
Plastered Vets win the Veterans final in a hard fought game.
The Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association was pleased to host their grand finals on Saturday, September 13. All games were played in the spirit of great gamesmanship and were tough, hard and competitive. In the U10’s neither the All Stars or Raiders were able to gain the upper hand with a final nil all draw resulting in a count back of goals for and against with All Stars being declared 2014 Premiers. The U13 Games were also fiercely contested with the Scorchers testing the skills of the All Stars and being very gallant in the narrowest of defeats. Abby Toshach scored the goals for the All Stars with a final score line of 2/0. The Troopers gained the upper hand over the Vikings and were able to maintain the slimmest of leads to be declared 2014 Premiers with Ian Haughton scoring the only goal of the game. The U17 Voodoos maintained their dominance on the field with a great win over the All Stars; Sophie Gampe put two
in the box with a finals score of 3/0. The U17 Slammer’s outplayed the Bombers in a fast action packed game in a great win 8/2. The Ladies minor premiers Belair went into their finals as the favourites and again showed great skill on the field winning against the Shooters to maintain their dominance in the Ladies competition; Helene Cirrani, Alice Phillips and Jess Finlen (Shooters) all scored with a final tally 3/1. In the Veterans finals Waterloo were unable to match Plastered Vets in a great game of skill which kept the crowd on their toes for much of the 60 minutes, with Carrie BeBruey scoring the only goal of the game. In the final game of the day, the much fancied White Knights took on the Bombers and were dominant on the field being declared Premiers for 2014. The Association would like to congratulate all Premiers for 2014 and thank all sponsors, volunteers, players and spectators for a wonderful season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2015.
Runners-Up are still winners
Poppy Boltz (center) from Marlin Coast broke the girls under 15 400 meters’ in a new record time of 1.03.22. Montana McAvoy was second and Krystal Schultz third.
Records Tumble The Kuranda Rangers Under 14 team fought valiantly in their grand final. By Katherine Kokkonen
THE Kuranda Rangers Under 14 team might have just missed out on taking home the finals trophy, but they are still champions in the eyes of their manager. Manager Miry Cobham said the Rangers played incredibly well on Saturday, at Endeavour Park, in Cairns, taking the grand final into extra time, before just losing out in penalties. It was close game against the Saints with the score tied one all at halftime and then again at two all at fulltime. Captain Aldi Blackwell and striker Ori Cobham scored the two goals of the match. “It was a very tight game and everyone fought,”
Cobham said. “The teams were really into it and it was just go go go the whole game. The defence was really strong and they really fought. At the end, there was a lot of pressure for the goalie who was really holding up nicely.” Cobham was proud of the development of the players; the team had started the season with only 10 players, some having never played soccer before. “It took a while to get them to that stage,” she said. “The development was massive for everyone. To come from nowhere to second place, that for us means we won.”
Eels pumped for grand final By Katherine Kokkonen
THE Malanda/Mareeba Eels will head into their grand final next week having lost only one game in the season, but the team isn’t letting it get to their heads. Coach/Captain Darren Ball said while the team is pumped for the showdown in Cairns on Sunday, they were still working hard in training. “We are Pretty confident, but not getting our hopes up just yet,” he said. “It is a grand final and everybody is keen on
the day to win.” The Eels have only been beaten by Mossman, who have already been knocked out of final contention. They will face either Brothers or Edmonton in the final. In the lead-up to the big game, the Eels have been focusing on developing more line speed and building fitness. “It doesn’t really matter who goes through, we are prepared for whoever it is,” Ball said. “Everyone is performing well and this is the best season we’ve had. Everyone has bonded together a bit more and we are keen to win”

The meet represented Qualifying rounds for the Queensland State Championships, which will be in Brisbane at ANZ Stadium, in March next year. Budding athletes from under six to under seventeen years took part in the two day event. Tony Northey president of Queensland Little Athletics said “It’s a wonderful opportunity for athletes who are keen on furthering their ambitions to take that
next step”. “Nine centers from across the region are represented here today at the meet”. On Saturday, under favorable conditions the following records were broken Liam Gilbert boys U/12 400M, Connor Tomlinson boys U/14 400M, Poppy Boltz girls U/15 400M, Shannon Reynolds U/15 Girls 400M, Augustus Brooks Boys U/14 1500M, Montana McAvoy Girls U/15 1500M and Zachery Ballantine Boys U/14 high jump. Bulls stampede home with three victories The Mareeba Bulls trampled over the FNQ Football League at the weekend coming away with three amazing grand final wins from all three mens grades. The second division boys started off the winning streak on Friday night winning 2-1 against JCU. The reserves then followed with a 2-1 win against The Heat, on Saturday afternoon in Cairns. The Bulls premier mens team then capped off the weekend with a tough, but solid 2-0 win over the Stratford Dolphins, to give the club three grand finals and the large travelling Bulls crowd something to celebrate. In the premier match it was Elliot Garnder and Steven Cater who got on the scorecard for the Bulls, but it was a complete team performance that was the key for the Mareeba boys to take out the final and bring home the clubs first grand final victory since 2006. In all the pre-game talk, it was Stratford
trying to bait the Bulls, with former Bulls QSL player Joe Rusch stating the Bulls would not be able to handle the small confines of Endeavour Park and that the Dolphins had the tricks up their sleeve to spoil the Bulls party. But after 90 minutes of football it was the total opposite, as the Bulls dominated and the Dolphins never really looked to threaten. Coach Alex Srhoj said it was a honour and he was proud of the clubs players to be able to achieve this ‘special’ year. “This year we have had special players, but more importantly we have been able to come together to create special teams” said Srhoj. “To be able to be a part of this result for the club in 2014 is a honour “ Srhoj stated. All three champion bulls teams will now head to Townsville on October 11, for the Crad Evans Shield, where they hope to be crowned north Queensland champions.
The Smishies are battling against the Smurfs to dominate the Mareeba touch football competition.
Smishies vs Smurfs in touch By Katherine Kokkonen
It might sound like a battle from a science fiction movie, but the Smishies and Smurfs have made the clash come to life on the touch football field. Mid-way through the season, 16 teams are vying to take out the competition but the Smishies and Smurfs are standout teams. The mixed touch football competition sees teams consisting of up to 14 players converge at Davies Park every Monday evening. Mareeba Touch Association Treasurer Carolyn Redfern said the
Smishies and Smurfs were noticeable leaders of the competition. Both teams have been long-term stablemates in the competition, albeit in various guises and under different team names. “They sit right at the top and basically outshine every season,” Ms Redfern said. While the season ends mid-November, the association is still accepting players into the competition. The Mareeba Mazda Roar Under 11s Team celebrates after thrashing the Predators in the futsal grand final.
By Katherine Kokkonen
YOUNG futsal players are burning bright after their spectacular grand final win on the weekend. The Mareeba Madza Roar Under 11s Team played a near perfect game to thrash the Predators 16–1 in the Winter Round of Cairns Futsal. Coach Peter Ius was incredibly proud of the team’s performance and could not praise the players highly enough for their grand final win. The Mazda Roar faced minor premiership winner the Predators, but were unfazed by their opposition. Ius said the way the team worked was clinical with minimal mistakes and the match was the best game of futsal he had ever seen them play. “The intensity the boys played at was too much for opposition,” he said. “The raw skill and speed of the boys’ game was phenomenal. They www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
had worked on it all year and put it into practice perfectly.” The team have built a solid reputation, having beaten the competition the previous two years and now winning their first year as part of the Cairns competition. While the Winter Round of futsal, which ran from April to last weekend has wrapped up, the players won’t get much of a break before the summer round kicks off in the next few weeks. Ius said the team would not have been able to achieve what they have without strong local support. He praised Mareeba Mazda for being supportive of the team and also acknowledged the players’ parents for sacrificing their time to help the children achieve their goals. “They are a great bunch of kids,” Ius said. “I am gifted to have met them and have a part in their training.”
