T
he Afghanistan Avenue of Honour in Yungaburra received another high-profile visit on May 13 when Australian Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove made an appearance at the site during a tour of Far North Queensland. Sir Peter spoke at the Avenue’s Honour Board, saying fallen soldiers listed on it were
‘immortalised’ by the memorial. Sir Peter and his wife Lynne landed at the Avenue in a Chinook military helicopter and were greeted by Avenue of Honour president Ray Byrnes, Gordon and Sue Chuck, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore. Gordon Chuck, the father of Australian commando whose death in an Afghanistan helicopter crash inspired the creation of the Avenue, led
the Governor-General to the Honour Board. Sir Peter lauded Mr Chuck for the creation of the Avenue in addition to Ben Chuck and his comrades for their sacrifices. “Lynne and I greatly admire you – in creating the Avenue of Honour, the Yungaburra community was following your lead, your desire to honour your son, and all those Australia lost in this conflict – I can see from where Ben got his courage, drive and stamina,” Sir Peter said to
Mr and Ms Chuck in his speech. “As a former soldier, I can’t help but be greatly touched by your obvious respect for all the men and women who serve our nation in uniform – for their fighting spirit, courage and desire to make the world safer. “I know from the time I spent in this region in 2006, that your community is special - tightknit, supportive, stoic and determined – but CONTINUED P3

Jonathan Gibson is on a crossglobe adventure for national depression initiative Beyond Blue. The 27-year-old self-confessed motorcycle addict is attempting to ride from Sydney to London on a 1969 Royal Enfield, which belonged to his grandfather Herman Whitehead. Accompanied by his father Trevor Gibson, his aim is to raise $20,000 and awareness of mental health issues. “I lost some close friends to suicide and having left notes they let loved ones know that they didn’t quite live up to expectations they had of themselves, so they felt as though they didn’t know what was required of them to be a man,” Mr Gibson said.
“I didn’t know the answer to that question myself so I set out to explore it and so I decided to do this ride to London gather as much information I can about mental health. “Men always have problems talking about issues that affect them in their lives, by just looking at them you would think that they are fine but most find it difficult to talk about these types of problems. “Men usually find it difficult to admit that they are struggling a bit and unfortunately they feel that the only alternative is to take their own life, which is unfortunate. After spending two months on Misima sightseeing and getting to know other mining families working on the island, Flo returned to far northern Queensland and was working in Dimbulah grading tobacco that she first met her husband Alan. The couple were married in Gordonvale on July 29, 1941, when Flo was 27. Starting their married life on a tobacco farm in Dimbulah, then lived in Tolga for several years on another small farm and later settled in Mareeba with their three daughters – Janice, Elaine and Gayle. Alan enjoyed a career with the Tobacco Growers and sadly passed away in 1980. Alan and Flo shared a love of fishing and enjoyed many a holiday at Airlie Beach, with Flo fondly recalling the time she caught a 20 pound mackerel. “Alan had to help pull it in,” she laughed. Flo has been a member of the Mareeba Senior Citizens club for more than 30 years and anybody who knows her is careful to schedule their visits around these much loved social gatherings.

A century of memories and experience for one Mareeba woman was celebrated at the Graham Hotel last week. Flo Boundy celebrated her 100th birthday on May 16 at a special gathering of family and friends. Flo was born in Gordonvale on May 16, 1914 to parents Charles Edward Horton and Lavinia Sarah Horton. The fourth daughter of seven children, Flo grew up in the family home Charles built in Gordonvale. After finishing school she remained in Gordonvale for some years before she embarked on several adventures. One such adventure she often talks about is how she travelled by boat to Misima Island near Papua New Guinea to visit her older sister Jessie, whose husband was working in a gold mine there. Flo was a young, unmarried woman of 23 at the time, and the memory of the trip is still fresh in her mind. “I travelled from Cairns to Samarai on a Burns Philip steamship, I think it was called the Montoro,” she said. “The rest of the trip was on a much smaller boat, not much bigger than a yacht.”

Racing for charity By Carl Portella The 11th annual Great Wheelbarrow Race was run at the weekend as a record 745 competitors and race personnel descended on to Davies Park Mareeba last Friday to line up for the start. The fundraising total of the weekend was a staggering $433,000, just short of the previous year’s record of $461,000. Schools from across the region took time off class, businesses suspended trading and townspeople watched and applauded the colorful line-up of teams as they paraded through Byrnes Street, each displaying enthusiasm and waving to the thousands of onlookers. The 74 teams that took part this year surpassed last year’s record of 72. The teams consisted of 28 mixed, 11 ladies’, 2 men’s’, eight over forty years, eight schools, seven duos, three solo men’s, two services teams and five solo females. 15-year-old Jenny Hoskins from Cairns was
the youngest solo runner. 51 teams raised money for many worthy charities across the region. The procession of competitors and their support crews rolled into Dimbulah on Friday afternoon, where a night of fun and entertainment and much needed rest awaited them. The tiny community of Almaden greeted the hundreds of competitors to their town on Saturday where they rested before the final leg to Chillagoe on Sunday morning. As competitors began their preparations, news had filtered through that Indie Rose Taurima had lost her battle with leukaemia. The Indiestructables, who were running for Indie, used her memory and all that they have been working for to help them over the finish line. Exhausted after the 140km trek from Mareeba, Chillagoe, residents turned out in droves to welcome them home. Organizers of the event where overwhelmed by the response of local communities in each of the three towns, which hosted the competi-

tors and support crews as they travelled to their final destination. Next year’s race promises to be even bigger as the wheelbarrow race becomes even more recognized as one of the largest charity fund raising events in the region. clearly indicative of the Avenue of Honour assuming a position of national significance. “It’s also great that Sir Peter is back up in far north Queensland because the region has definitely retained a lot of respect for him after the Cyclone Larry cleanup.” Sir Peter led recovery efforts in far north Queensland after Cyclone Larry in 2006 as the head of a government-appointed task force. His visit to the Avenue of Honour formed part of one of the Governor-General’s first regional tours after being appointed in March, with Sir Peter also visiting the Mossman Gorge indigenous community, In-
nisfail and Jezzine Barracks in Townsville. The Governor-General also commanded Australian peacekeeping forces in East Timor in the 1990s, served as Chief of the Defence Force between 2002 and 2005, and was awarded Australian of the Year in 2001. Noted as a man of the people, the Governor-General took a minute to say thanks to students from Mt St Bernard College, who sang ‘Advance Australia Fair’ during the ceremony. Other high-profile visitors to the Avenue of Honour include then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard and then-Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

By Boyd Robertson Mareeba State High School (MSHS) students got a competitive edge in last week’s NAPLAN test after receiving leading-edge tutoring from one of the school’s teachers. Maths teacher Timothy Lehmann developed the online tutorial in conjunction with former MSHS teacher Rosemary Wiffin. MSHS Year 8 students that used the program over its 8-week course saw their marks
improve by 16.34 per cent in practice tests. The program teaches problem-solving strategies for complex maths problems, using theories developed by Hungarian mathematician George Polya in 1945. Available through the online education platform Blackboard, the program features an interactive chat and virtual whiteboard for students and the teacher to use. Mr Lehmann said the program teaches four steps – ‘see’, ‘plan’, ‘do’, ‘check’ – to break
down complicated problems. “One of the issues we have in maths education particularly when it comes to NAPLAN is that the curriculum is so crowded,” he said. “Teachers don’t often get the chance to teach problem-solving skills because they have to devote so much time to covering the curriculum. Learning problem solving strategies helps students’ confidence in approaching the NAPLAN tests – these are skills they carry with them right through to Year 12 mathematics.”

What to do with that wet spot? After Ita and the wettest April for a long long time, we all certainly know where the wet spots in our gardens are! So, what to plant in a wet spot which is likely to go under water every year? Well, here’s some solutions for you.... First to the tried and trusted way, with popular and hardy melaleucas and callistemons … you certainly can’t go wrong with these! They grow along watercourses and in bogs and soaks naturally, so they are perfectly adapted to sitting with their feet in water for a few weeks at a time. Melaleucas come in all shapes and sizes from shrubs such as Snowstorm and Claret Tops, to large trees such as Melaleuca leucadendra. Similarly, callistemons come in all sizes from small shrubs (such as Little John) to medium shrubs (such as Wilderness White) to large shrubs or small trees such as the Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis). So there’s melaleucas and callistemons which will do the job in any size yard. Now to something more adventurous. Did you know that the beautiful Corkwood Tree (Melicope elleryana) which attracts the Ulysses Butterfly grows naturally along watercourses and in swampy areas? And what about the gorgeous Red Beech (Dillenia alata) with its glorious copper-red flaky-barked trunk and beautiful bright yellow flowers, which thrives in boggy sites? And the Freshwater Mangroves … there’s two species, Carallia brachiata which attracts the phenomenal 4 O’Clock Moth, and Barringtonia acutangula which drips nectar-laden bottlebrush flowers in spring. And the Lilly-pillies with their cascades of beautiful new growth – we’re spoilt for choice here in the tropics as far as Lilly-pillies go. And a special favourite of ours, the Swamp Tamarind (Dictyoneura obtusa) which has purple new growth and masses of orange berries that form a spectacular cascading curtain. So, once you’ve created a canopy with these beautiful trees described above, you can fill in underneath with Mangrove Lilies (Crinum pedunculatum) with their huge strap-like leaves and large white perfumed flowers, and Swamp Orchids (Spathoglottis paulinae) with their bright purple flowers and so easy to grow! Crowd them in for a real wow! effect. And for something really different (if it’s not too shady) pop in a couple of Swamp Banksias (Banksia robur). Yes, this banksia really does grow in swampy soils. It has huge serrated leaves and large olive-green banksia flowers which really have to be seen to be believed. If there’s any room left, fill in any remaining space with as many Lomandras as you can fit. They will cover the ground, soak up water, and fill the air with beautiful perfume when they send up their flower spikes. And here’s a third very easy solution to your wet spot – simply create a palm grove. Palms like the native Alexandra Palm grow naturally in damp spots. An informal clump of palms can look fantastic. So, there’s no excuse for not planting out your wet spot this weekend!.

Saving lives on our roads Fatality free Friday, Australia’s largest community based road safety campaign. It is an initiative of the Australian Road safety Foundation and calls for all road users to promise themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey all road rules. In this issue of The Express we see the roll Police have in road crashes. Sergeant Andrew Osborne from the Tableland Patrol Group gives a retrospect on the consequences of life and death in road crashes.
As a Police officer since 1991 I have travelled throughout Queensland with my postings. One thing that remains the same whether you are stationed in Aurukun or Brisbane is the effect that a fatal traffic crash has on the community. Every crash that occurs has a ripple effect within the community. A crash does not just impact upon the people directly involved in the crash. It impacts upon the community as a whole. These are some of the people who will be affected by the crash: The people directly involved in the crash, their families, the emergency services providers, any witnesses, their families, tow truck drivers, their family, staff at the hospital, their family, if the people involved are school children – their school friends and students, the teachers and of course again their families. The list could continue to grow. So you see that a fatal traffic crash impacts upon the entire community and that is why I am so enthusiastic about

projects to ensure the plants reliability and capacity to handle this year’s increased tonnage,” Mr Slattery said. “We experienced Cyclone Ita in mid-April, which left some cane lodged and fields flooded; however the crop hasn’t been significantly impacted. “Site maintenance works were the only thing impacted by the cyclone, with the necessary shutdown resulting in the crush start being delayed by one week.” B-Double trucks have also started carting Tableland Cane down the Rex Range to the Mossman Mill.
Highway upgrade on the cards Motorists are set to benefit from a safety boost at the intersection of Kennedy Highway and Malone Road. Member for Cook David Kempton said the upgrade would include the installation of a dedicated rightturn lane to improve safety for vehicles exiting Kennedy Highway. “I have fought hard for this upgrade and am pleased to announce that $400,000 has been made available for this project,” Mr Kempton said. “This is another example of the
Newman government keeping to its election promise to deliver better infrastructure and better planning. “The intersection is in a 100 km/h zone on one of the busiest roads on the Tablelands. “Growing residential subdivisions mean a growth in traffic volumes in the area, which is why this intersection needs this upgrade. “The Mareeba district has been overlooked for years and I am working hard to attract as much infrastructure to this region as possible.” Mr Kempton said the funding
would allow crews to widen and seal the road shoulder to build a dedicated turning lane. “Line marking and signage for the entire intersection will also be upgraded, which will improve visibility for all road users and clearly guide through-traffic around any stationary traffic in the middle of the road.” The funding is in addition to $1 million in safety upgrades already announced for the Kennedy Highway. The upgrade is expected to begin later this year.

The 2014 cane season has kicked into gear, with the Mossman Mill expecting a crush of more than 1 million tons thanks to an influx of about 500,000 tonnes of new Tableland cane. The Tableland Mill on the other hand is looking at a much-reduced crush of 300,000 tonnes down from about 800,000 last year after many growers began sending their cane to Mossman. Canegrowers Tableland manager Bronywn Dwyer said the Tableland crush would be smaller than last year’s above-average crop.
“Last year’s crop was a bumper crop, it was an exceptional year so you can’t really compare the two,” Ms Dwyer said. Meanwhile Mossman Mill and new parent company Mackay Sugar is looking forward to a deluge of Tableland cane, with the mill having recently completed an upgrade in preparation for the big 2014 crush. Mossman Mill manager Haydn Slattery said although the mill had experienced a few teething problems during the start-up, the operations were now running satisfactorily. “During the maintenance season, we completed a major upgrade of our boilers and several other associated

Saturday 31st May 2014 sees the grand opening of the newly amalgamated and renovated TGT Mareeba Home Hardware Store at 204 Byrnes Street in Mareeba. While doors will open at the usual time of 7am, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9am and a FREE Breakfast will be offered to visitors between 8am and 9.30am (after which time a small charge will apply). Opening hours on Saturday have been extended to 5pm and the store will open during the usual hours of 8am to 12pm on Sunday. A huge number of very exciting activities for the whole family have been planned for the day. These will kick off after the official opening at 9am, from which time a live 4AM broadcast will run until lunchtime. In addition to calling the Red Spot Specials at regular intervals during that time, the Announcer will be drawing customers’ attention to the other catalogue specials that are running and chatting with a few people who have played a role in the union of the two iconic companies. Rusty and Sandy will be in-store and they will also parade down Byrnes Street with plenty of promotional give-aways for all the kids. Gearing up for festival By Boyd Robertson The Dimbulah Lions Festival on May 31 is shaping up to be a cracker, with the event’s traditional combination of parades, food stalls, fireworks and the crowning of the festival’s King and Queen set to draw in another massive crowd. Events kick off at 5pm with the Festival Street Parade, with the Festival proper officially opening at 5:45pm. Dimbulah Lions president Jamie De Lai said there was ‘loads of entertainment’ to be found at the Festival, including the great Battle of the Schools. Dimbulah State School, St Anthony’s School and Mutchilba State School will all face off with unique performances of art and music. School students will also collect prizes for art projects completed during the term at the Festival. A magnificent array of food stalls will provide a culinary overload, with Lions stalls offering steak burgers, palenta sausage, and Italian pastas.
Foods from the Spanish Club, the Philippines and elsewhere in Asia will also be on offer, in addition to traditional fare like hot chips, chicken nuggets and pizza. Show rides, duck-shooting and dodgem cars will keep kids entertained. The Festival’s fireworks display is scheduled at 9pm – earlier than usual so kids won’t have to stay up as late to see it. The Queen search will also climax as one of the six entrants is crowned Dimbulah Lions Queen. Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore and other Tableland notaries are expected to attend. Mr De Lai said this year’s Festival was sure to be a corker. “It’s absolutely the biggest event on the calendar alongside the Wheelbarrow Race,” he said. “We’re expecting about 1500 people – it should be a fantastic night. “The Festival is a tradition that has been going in Dimbulah for 50 years, we have a lot of local support and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Although planning and preparation for the Tablelands Relay For Life has been in full bloom for a number of months now – on May 30 we will officially launch the Relay in Mareeba with a Spring Carnival themed celebration! This is an event for the whole community and we would love for you to join with us at Davies Park on Friday, May 30 from 4pm. This year we have selected the Spring Carnival theme for both the launch and the September Relay, and we look forward to all that it will bring. For me personally, spring evokes a wealth of new ideas surrounding new life, fresh beginnings, plenty of sunshine and hope. It’s a time that lifts spirits and that is exactly what Relay embodies. Relay symbolises a new start for survivors, and creates hope for those who have lost loved ones, and hope for a cancer free future.
This is highlighted during our powerful fight back ceremony which is held in the early hours of the morning at Relay. Participants pledge to fight back and leave Relay with fresh ideas, new inspirations and a new found passion to make a difference. This month’s launch will also be a great opportunity to find out what Relay For Life is all about, register a team, meet the committee – and most importantly, be inspired. At the launch we will announce our 2014 Face of Relay, who is a cancer survivor and will be such an inspiration to the Tablelands community. I look forward to seeing you all next week! Mystery in Mareeba By Boyd Robertson Tableland literature fans now have a chance to read a tale of mystery, romance and drama that unfolds in their own backyard. Rocky Creek is the latest novel by Toowomba-based author Louise Rotondo and is set partially in the massive Allied military hospital at Rocky Creek during World War 2. The Yungaburra Markets in addition to the Syd Beck Military Museum and Coffee Works in Mareeba also make an appearance in the book, which is described by Ms Rotondo variously as a combination of historical drama and romance. The story follows a man named Eamon, who after a conversation with his dementia-suffering grandmother begins to unravel the secrets of his family history.
“Basically, the story asks the question of ‘what happens when a family’s skeletons all fall out of the closet at the same time?’”, Ms Rotondo said. Rocky Creek is the first book of a planned trilogy, with Ms Rotondo now planning the second novel, Marigold. Ms Retondo, 41, grew up in far north Queensland and spent a lot of time visiting her grandparents on the Tableland. Her grandmother Audrey was one of her main sources of information when creating the background of the book. She said researching the book revealed more about the region than she ever knew, particularly about the Rocky Creek Hospital. Rocky Creek was released on April 23, two days before ANZAC Day. The novel is currently available only through Amazon but Ms Rotondo is hoping to have it displayed for sale at Coffee Works in Mareeba.

Firstly a huge thank you for everyone who attended the Townsville and District VMX Club Relay For Life Motocross Practice weekend at the Cairns MX club track 2 weeks ago. This was a fundraiser with all Practice fees being donated to the Cancer Council’s Cairns Relay For Life and a staggering $1820.00 was raised!! Many thanks to all the local clubs and riders who came to support this event and it was great to see a good turnout of Vintage and Modern Motocross bikes. I personally would like to thank Mr Yamaha, Duane Hutley For organising this fundraiser event and also for giving me a sweet 1986 Yamaha YZ 250 to ride, so thank you Duane you are a legend, and the sweet smell of two stroke is still in my riding gear!! Recently I saw a large group of riders out on the road and they were all over the place which nearly resulted in an accident so I thought I might touch on some things you should be doing when riding in a group on the road. Road Riding in a group of motorcycles brings enjoyment and a ton of fun, but riding in this environment should have it’s own set of precautionary measures too. There is nothing like the thrill of riding in a large pack of bikes, but riding in a group often means that you will be riding closer to others on the road than you would be if you were riding by yourself. to let everyone know where your heading, where any stops are likely to occur like your coffee, fuel and lunch and what sort of roads and conditions you may encounter on the ride and this is the time to elect a lead rider and a tail rider. The lead rider will need to keep an eye on what’s going on behind, and ride in a manner that’s suitable for the rider with the lowest skill level in the group. When you’re out on the road it’s best to assume a staggered formation, where the bikes behind you and in front of you are offset to the right or left so that your vision ahead and behind is maximised. This also gives you a lot more space to work with if something goes drastically wrong, and you need an escape route in a hurry. Corners. For example, the lead rider makes a left hand turn onto another road and continues on, and the second rider then pulls up and safely positions themselves on that corner until everyone else and finally the tail rider comes past, that rider then giving the thumbs up signalling that everyone is through. The rider who pulled up now becomes the tail rider. At the next turn, the new person in second spot and does the same as I described before, and so everyone shuffles through a spot in the order of riders, apart from the leader. It’s a little regimented, but when carried out properly means you should never have a group ride split up accidentally or lose someone ever again. Finally, let common sense rule your spacing and your group riding in general. The faster you go, the more space you should allow between you and the bike in front, and when you’re riding with strangers, allow a bit of extra spacing until you get a feel for the general level of riding skill of those around you. Staff at The Express Newspaper was given the opportunity to test-drive the new Mazda 3 SP25 for a whole week courtesy of Mareeba Mazda at Byrnes Street. This gave all staff members a chance to see for themselves what all the fuss was about. True to the rumour this great looking sports car was a treat to drive. The keyless entry was a little awkward at first and so too was the bush button start, (no Keys) but we got use to it. Settling back into the very comfortable wrap-around bucket seats you couldn’t help but notice the instrument cluster right at your fingertips. The sporty feel of the vehicle matched it exterior curves. One of the great features of the SP25 is the rearview camera and satellite navigation
panel mounted just to the left of the drivers view. Great for backing on to the street or when pedestrians are about, it’s an excellent safety feature. The 2.5lt in-line 4 cylinder DOHC S-VT petrol engine with i-stop is simply sensational. Some other standard feature include: front fog-lamps, rear spoiler (on the sedan), dual-zone climate control air-conditioning. Headlamps auto on/off function, 2 speed wipers with rain-sensing function not forgetting to mention the superb handling especially around corners. A feature of last week’s Mareeba Basketball competition were convincing victories in the majority of senior and junior fixtures, as well as a number of individual players who scored many good baskets for their respective sides. Certainly with the winter season semi-finals just 3 weeks away, some teams in all divisions will need to look at their game plan in their quest to contest the grand finals, otherwise their season will conclude at the semi-final stage. No doubt a highlight of fixtures played last week was the excellent shooting ability of various players in all divisions. A Lessandro Campo continues to impress in scoring 21 points for Eurostars. While another strong performance in the Senior Mens division was turned in by Graeme Wood for Topshots with his 16 points. Standing out in the Senior Ladies scoring department were Deidre Brumby with a haul of 26 points for Baiada Steggles, together with 23 from young Brianah Cater for the High School Divas combination. A dominating performance by Ayden Smith (Panthers) and Omar Myrteza (Warriors) earned their respective under 16 junior teams valuable competition points. They constantly found the baskets and finished with 33 points each. The last fixture of last week provided the only real thriller in which under 14 juniors, Tigers and Lakers continually exchanged the lead during the last quarter before Lakers gained victory by 40 to 38. Excellent displays by Zayd Myretza scoring 22 points for the winners and 20 points by Lane Hanush for Tigers. This game certainly pleasing supporters. Many thanks to Helen Harris who coaches them each Saturday. U10’s again played a fantastic round robin. Although conditions were wet all teams handled the added pressure of sweeping rain and wind in their stride. With the Raiders versing the All Stars and then taking on the Sharks all games were closely contested with neither team able to take advantage. Andrew Earl, Felix Raddcliffe and Lucy Edsen fought hard against the All Star’s but with great defence from Talitha McDonald, Alex McGowan and Jordan Relph both games resulted in nil all draws. The Sharks then backed up against the All Stars with neither team able to take advantage and again a nil all draw was the end result. With such hotly contested games early in the season the leader board will be hard to determine. U13’s saw some great action: In the first game Scorchers took on the Vikings. Joel Grace was dominant for the Vikings scoring all three goals. Although the Scorchers were unable to convert in the box Emily Muller, Makenzie May, Ella Curcio and Leah MacCallum showed great skill and determination to keep the Vikings attack of Joel Cooney, Jake Gowen and Tom Flounoy at bay. Another great game with the final score not reflecting the great defensive and attacking skills of both sides. In a thrilling game the Troopers took on the All Stars. With neither side gaining any clear advantage throughout game Bailey Hutchinson and Keelan Boyd were dominant for the Troopers putting away three goals. Not to be outdone the All Stars replied with 2 fantastic goals scored by Frankie Constant and Kate Keevers. Again indication’s are that the top of the ladder will be hard fought for. In the U17 games the All Stars took on the U13 Rep Boys Team: Harry Phillips, Connor Clair and the young team fought hard and kept the girls to 3 goals only. Lilly Curcio Gabrielle Gallo and T Tessaro all scored a goal apiece for the All Stars. The newly named Malanda Jaguars took on Totally Tilted in a great game. With a number of girls playing their first season Totally Tilted took the Jaguars to a thrilling end with Tanya Barron and Charlie Marst scored for the team . For the Jaguars L Baira had a hat trick of goals while G Doull scored one. A great games with a 4/2 victory to the Jaguars. In the final game the U17 Boys (Bombers)were dominant against the normally strong Voodoos. Will Coleman, Tom Watson, Brodi Parsons, Calum Parsons and Jack Howard all got goals in the box whilst Tanya Purdy scored the lone goal for Voodoos. The Veterans team of Plastered Vets out battled Totally Holcim to a 2 nil win. Dorcas Heap was dominant in the box. Woteva was no match for Waterloo with Helen Harris again the player of the match for Waterloo putting 5 in the goal box with Louisa Greatrex putting away 3. The final matches of the day saw the Ladies and Men play in miserable conditions. White Knights faced off against Bombers in a thrilling game which went down to the wire. Both teams played great defence with the final score 2 goals a piece. Belair again demonstrated their dominance in the Ladies competition defeating Cruisers in a rain drenched match. Helen Harris was again superb in the goal box supported by Angela Wood and Katrina Lange. Shooters and Pluckers fought hard with Jess Finlen and Caron Byrnes scoring for Shooters putting a combined 3 goals in the box; whilst Pluckers managed two in the box. In the final game of the day K9’s and Shed Boss Shamrocks battled appalling conditions. Toby Furber and Brendan Geraghty each put a goal in
the box for the Shammies whilst Riley Muller scored for the K9’S. Final score 2/1 to the Shamrocks. BMX May Mayhem carnival Atherton BMX Club will host their May Mayhem Carnival this weekend at their sporting facility located on Groves Street in Atherton. The best BMX riders in Far North Queensland will compete for selection to represent their zone at the state championships. The two-day carnival will attract riders from all over the Far North with some 200 competitors expected to descend on Atherton. The carnival starts Saturday afternoon May 24 and continues Sunday morning May 25. Racing starts 3pm on Saturday finishing around 6:30pm and starting again on Sunday at 9:00 am. Club representative Warren Phillips said the carnival would bring the best riders from far and wide. “The weekend is an ID round with competition aimed at selecting the best riders in the Far North and to show what
they can do on the track,” he said. “There are four of these events held this year in Townsville, Cairns, and Mt Isa and at our club this weekend.” The Atherton BMX club encourages a safe family environment with lots of fun for all. The club has approximately 80 members and have club racing Saturday nights and Sunday mornings (alternate) and training two days a week.

Winning streak By Boyd Robertson An informal ‘State of Origin’ golf series organised by a group of Mareeba players looks to be imitating its rugby equivalent with a long stretch of Queensland dominance. Created five years ago out of an idea by three related men – Eric Iacutone, Sam Gambino and John Cavasini – the State of Origin pits a Queensland team from Mareeba against a New South Wales team from Sydney. New South Wales won the first two annual matches but Queensland has begun to build an impressive winning streak after winning the fifth match played across three games in Cairns and Port Douglas over May 2-5. The Queensland side won 5-1 on the last day of play in Port Douglas on May 5.
Sam Gambino said the games were always something to look forward to. “We like to say that it’s not about winning and it’s all friendly but we really do love giving them a good hiding,” he said. “We love doing it, these guys have become like extended family to us and we always look forward to the games.” The matches are timed around player commitments but are usually held in advance of the rugby State Of Origin, in which Gambino is confident Queensland will continue its dominance. “I definitely think it’s going to be nine in a row for Queensland,” he said. Ideas for the location of the next golf State of Origin are ‘already being kicked around’, with Melbourne and the Sunshine coast currently considered as possible venues.
Mareeba tennis open The Mareeba Tennis Open will be held at the tennis complex on Chewko Road from Friday 23 from 6pm through to Sunday May 25. This is the Mareeba Tennis Club’s major tournament of the year and is sanctioned by Tennis Australia. The Mareeba Open, which was first played in 1994, has often attracted local players from the region as well as players from interstate to participate in the event. Last year’s winners were Ryan Coffey from Cairns in the open men’s singles and Amy-Lee Evans from Ravenshoe the open ladies single winner. This year’s tournament promises
to be quite spectacular with large numbers expected to enter the various categories. Event Categories include A and B grade men’s and ladies singles, A and B grade men’s and ladies doubles, AMT men’s and ladies singles, AMT men’s and ladies doubles and A and B grade mixed doubles. Brawl ends game The Atherton Roosters home match against the Mossman sharks on Saturday night was marred by an all in brawl prompting the referee to call an end to proceeding with seven minutes still remaining on the clock. The decision was made after four Roosters players were sent from the park because of their involvement. A fuming Roosters coach Karle Hammond said: “it’s an absolute disgrace, that is the worst care from a match referee and official I’ve ever seen. To abandon the match with seven minutes remaining. He sin binned the player, then informed him that he had been sent off and then when we questioned the decision he said the player could come back on, he wasn’t sent off. When you’ve sent someone off that’s the end of it.” “It was the most inept performance and it led to the trouble we had at the end of the match, and that’s as diplomatic as I can be,” said Karle. “34 players trying to play football and the referee thinking the
spectators have come to watch him. It was an absolute disgrace.” When asked if the club would lodge a formal complaint he said: “It would fall on deaf ears, it’s a tough enough job, but what we saw here tonight is not the standard for an A-grade competition.” Despite being down by 18 points at half time the Rooster clawed their way back before being denied the opportunity to see the game out. The final score was 26-40. In the reserves grade match Mossman defeated Atherton 38-10 While the under 18’s had a 14-10win The Mareeba gladiators travelled Yarrabah to take on the Seahawks in all grades in the Sunday game but another disappointing display by the Gators saw them come home empty handed. The under 18’s went down 52-18, the reserves were narrowly beaten 34-32 and the A-grade also went down 46-18. The Gators are away again this coming weekend as they travel to Callendar Park to take on Innisfail Brothers.
Callan aims for top of the podium Callan Sayers and his Team XCLUSIV took to the Wakefield Park Raceway in Goulburn NSW at the weekend to compete in Round 2 of the Australian Swift Racing Series. Callan and his team were a support class for the Super Truck Nationals at the event. After picking up pole position on Saturday Callan made it a clean sweep by securing a lap record and
three wins in Sundays racing. The XCLUSIV team which ran consistently into 3rd place finish at Bathurst last month was aiming to be at the top step of the podium on Sunday and to make a stand in this year’s championship. “The Swift field was pretty competitive with everyone hungry for the win so the racing was door to door” Callan said.
“I enjoyed a strong outing at Wakefield last year with the tight 2.1km circuit suiting me well. We reviewed the on-board video footage from last year and Bathurst with Michael and dad before the race, and so we made a few minor changes to my driving style for this one.” The weekend challenge consisted of five 8 to 10 lap sprint races, so qualifying up front was very important.
