he owner of Tableland Concrete Blocks (TCB) has urged customers not to abandon the business following the announcement of a major restructure that will see nine local jobs lost. TCB managing director Warwick Colefax confirmed to The Express that the business will stop manufacturing concrete blocks on December 6 and will also sell its Tolga depot and a small parcel of land in Mareeba. Mr Colefax said rumours circulating Mareeba
and the Tableland that the company had gone into liquidation were false and that for customers it would be “business as usual”. A substantial loan facility, as well as the lingering effects of the Global Financial Crisis, prompted the restructure. “We have been under a lot of pressure from the banks since the Global Financial Crisis,” Mr Colefax said. “In 2006 we bought the business, we had a good year in 2007 but when the GFC hit in 2008 it [business] went downhill. “We bought as much time as we could, about three years, waiting for an improvement but it has

just reached the stage that we had to do something drastic to reduce our borrowings.” Mr Colefax said the business would continue to sell concrete blocks “they just won’t be our blocks” which will be sourced from a far north Queensland supplier. The business will also continue its masonry supplies arm and will look to add to and enhance its landscaping yard. “For the most part it will be business as usual, if anything, we will be increasing our range of products, unless of course our customers abandon us,” Mr Colefax said.

“If they stay with us and bear with us then we will continue to be able to be the only supplier of these services on the Tableland.” Mr Colefax, who is based in Sydney, travelled to the Tableland on November 14 to personally inform staff of the changes. He said the decision to restructure had not been taken lightly. “This is obviously something that we didn’t relish doing but we were forced into doing it to survive,” he said. Mr Colefax said he was optimistic of the future of the business on the Tableland. TCB has been operating in Mareeba since 1971.

The team... THE FLAMING MOS: Aaron Mehmet, Craig O’Farrell, Snow Heathfield, Geoff Mammino, Brandt Cummings and Greg Cummings. Snow will shave off his goatee of 35 years after the Flaming Mos team reached a $4000 milestone in their fundraising for men’s health.

THE mo’s got to go. The Flaming Mos team are willing to sacrifice decades-old facial hair in the name of men’s health research and awareness. The entire team is growing out their moustaches, and those with longstanding goatees have pledged to shave them off when fundraising milestones are reached, with one already committed to going bare-chinned. Aiming to raise $10,000 by the end of Movember, the team, who all work at Pumping, Irrigation and Machinery Services in Mareeba, the team hosted a barefoot lawn-bowls and sausage sizzle event at Mareeba Memorial Bowls Club on November 24.
They also put on a car wash on Saturday morning at Mareeba Beaurepaires. Towering team member Snow, who has not been clean-shaven in 35 years, has vowed to lose his silver goatee now that the team has raised more than $4000. If the team reaches the $10,000 target team member Ron Cummings will also shave off his goatee, which he has had for 15 years. Organiser Geoff Mammino said the team was well-motivated to take part in the Movember challenge, with his father passing from cancer in 2009 and the Cummings losing a family member in 2011. “We’ve all lost people so we decided to jump on board with this thing and
really give it a go,” he said. “We’re pretty hopeful of hitting our $10,000 target but we’re getting close to our deadline at the moment. “Snow was pretty confident he was going to get to keep his goatee but we’ve passed that threshold now so we’re going to have a big public shaving for him at the end of all this.” Snow, however, laughed off the fear of losing his facial hair. “I’ll grow it all back in about three weeks because it grows about three millimetres a day,” he said. “It’s for a good cause so I’m not that bothered about it. “The only thing I am worried about is getting sunburnt on my chin.” Mr Mammino said the concept of Movember combining fun and charity
Carols in the Park will kick off Christmas By Boyd Robertson This year’s Carols in the Park is set to both open the festive season for the Tableland and raise money for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Run by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and Mareeba Rotary, the Carols will kick off with 30 minutes of pre-show entertainment at 6pm, with the main show starting at 6.30pm, in Arnold Park, Mareeba, on Walsh Street and wrap up around 8pm. The event will feature performances by singers of all ages, choirs, local artist Dennis Rose and will also include
a visit from Santa Claus before finishing with a fireworks display. Funds are raised for the Mayor’s Appeal through the sale of candles and food on the night. The Mayor’s Appeal raises money to buy food hampers for the less fortunate across the Tableland at Christmas time. Mareeba Rotary’s Natasha Srhoj said new music and performances would draw a bigger crowd and hopefully a bigger fundraising total this year. “This year we’ve got a performance of Felize Navidad in Spanish, which is sure to get everyone in the spirit, as well as all the regular favourites with lots of variants on

is what made it so easy to get behind. “Movember gets the issues out there not just with the fundraising but it gets people talking about it, mainly because you’ve got a great big moustache on your face the whole month,” he said. “A lot of the work we do here at the shop is dealing with farmers, guys out on the land have a higher and higher suicide rate - so these are issues close to our hearts.” When asked who had ‘the filthiest’ moustache out of the Flaming Mos, Mr Mammino was quick to answer. “It’s definitely Craig O’Farrell, he’s definitely got the filthiest mo,” he said. “He’s got dark hair but a red moustache. “We call him our trans-ginger.”

No election recount By Ryan Groube
Brad Maisel, Gavin Linde and Junior Walker are hoping the rain stays away with thousands of tonnes of cane stranded on farmers paddocks.
Delays mean cane is uncut By Ryan Groube
SUGAR cane farmers on the Tableland are counting the cost of a late crush as about 140,000 tonnes remains stranded on paddocks as Christmas closes in. As wet weather settled in last week, disrupting Maryborough Sugar’s Tableland Mill and harvesting, farmers are running out of time to prepare their paddocks for next season. A crop of about 860,000 tonnes – about 75,000 tonnes more than anticipated – as well as 300 hours of “unscheduled mill performance stops” has put the crush well behind schedule. Representatives from the mill met with Tableland Canegrowers this week to provide an updated finish date that is expected to fall on December 18. The Express understands that date only has limited contingencies for wet weather and maintenance delays and would require the mill to be operating at full capacity – about 5000 tonnes a day for the remainder of the season. Brad Maisel, whose family owns a 1000 hectare farm at Arriga, said farmers faced huge financial losses as a result of the late season. On November 22, as skies began to clear, the Maisel family began harvesting their “get out of jail paddock” – a paddock that will be ploughed out next year for the soil to recuperate. Mr Maisel said once farmers had exhausted these paddocks they would be faced with an unenviable choice; plough out replant paddocks and leave them sit for a season, or plant cane with the knowledge it won’t be fully matured by the next harvest. “Finishing this late costs us huge money,” he said. “We’ve still got about 20,000 tonnes left [of about 130,000t] to harvest. We’ve never had this much to cut this late in the year and anything that we cut af-

ter about mid-October we just won’t get return on for next year. “This has left us way out of sequence and there is no need for it. We should be finishing like everyone else in mid-November.” Maryborough Sugar chief executive Mike Barry conceded there “was still a fair bit to go” but was confident of getting the crop off well before Christmas. Mr Barry said teething problems stemming from a $42 million upgrade of the mill, which included infrastructure to increase the mills processing capacity from 185 tonnes per hour to 250, had set the crush back. “We are looking at finishing on December 18 due to a reasonable significant increase in the initial season tonnage estimates as well as a delayed start as a result of early commissioning problems,” he said. “Since then we have been delighted with the performance of the mill and at our current throughput we should be finished by December 18. “The Tableland has much more stable weather conditions than the coast. If we were at this stage at a coastal mill we would be a lot more worried.” Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said despite Maryborough Sugar’s assurances, farmers would be looking skyward hoping for dry conditions. “If we get any of this forecast rain and we get forced back to Christmas there could be some real dramas,” she said. “Having 140,000 tonnes to go is a huge amount and if we get any substantial rain the worry is that we could have as much as 40,000 tonnes that we just don’t get off.” Meanwhile, the Mackay Sugar-owned Mossman Mill’s 2013 crushing season ended on November 15, with approximately 7,580 hectares of sugarcane harvested and just over 587,000 tonnes crushed.
The Electoral Commission of Queensland has declined Mareeba Shire Council Mayoral candidate Mick Borzi’s request for a recount. Mr Borzi was narrowly defeated in the Mayoral race by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor-elect Tom Gilmore. In a statement to The Express, which has been run in full, Mr Borzi said he was disappointed by the decision. “I am disappointed that a recount was refused because based on the fact that mistakes were made, one of which involved 100 votes, there will forever be serious doubt about the result,” he said. “However I should not be surprised when we have some who are high up in government that did not favour de-amalgamation. I nominated for election as Mayor knowing that with elected councillors who share the same attitude we would make the
Mareeba Shire boom again to the benefit of all its residents. It is widely acknowledged that with good management the new MSC will be financially viable and successful. “It is now up to all of us to closely monitor the performance of the elected council and only accept facts, nothing else.” The ECQ declared Mr Gilmore the winner of the Mayoral race after he had established a 147 vote lead with only a handful of postal votes uncounted. The Express made a formal request to the ECQ to provide reasons why they did not grant the recount but they failed to respond by deadline. A recount of all ballot papers was completed on November 10, the day following the historic election. During the recount, 100 votes were found allocated to Mr Gilmore instead of Mr Borzi as the race narrowed. The ECQ closed its office at the Post Office Centre in Mareeba last week.

Concept drawings for the new Kuranda Visitor Information Centre.
New centre for Kuranda By Boyd Robertson Kuranda will finally be getting a new Visitor’s Information Centre (VIC) after the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) accepted a tender for the facility’s construction, but the town’s Chamber of Commerce has criticised council’s consultation process. Council granted the $578,765 tender to Cairns-based company Osborne Construction Solutions on November 21, with the new centre to be built adjacent to Centenary Park on the corner of Condoo and Therwine streets. The total cost of the project is estimated at just under $800,000, about $665,000 of which comes from the Kuranda Tourist Infrastructure Levy, which is paid by the town’s businesses and is administered by the Kuranda Infrastructure Advisory Committee (KIAC). The rest of the budgeted funds come from the TRC’s capital works budget. Council has been attempting to expand or replace the town’s small information centre, which has a total floor area of just 33 square
metres, since 2008 but was unable to find a satisfactory tender to begin works. TRC Division 8 councillor Jenny Jensen said the decision would help Kuranda capitalize on its high visitor numbers and act as a tourist gateway to the rest of the Tableland. “This has been a very long-awaited thing,” she said. “Kuranda visitor numbers are by far the highest in the region – this centre will be much, much larger than the existing building and allow for things like interactive displays that will really show those visitors what there is to see on the Tableland. “One thing I want to make clear to Kuranda locals is that the new centre is not going to take up any of the green space at Centenary Park, so they don’t have to worry about losing that recreational space.” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she was relieved a tender had been found for the construction of the new centre. “We have been fighting to get this underway for a very long time and I’m please to see that all the boxes have at last been
ticked,” she said. “I am looking forward to the first sod being turned.” However Kuranda Chamber of Commerce head and KIAC member Robert Matthews said there had been next to no community consultation by the TRC throughout the tender process. Mr Matthews said the KIAC was allowed little design input on the centre and largely kept out of the loop through the saga. “The design process has been nearly completely controlled by council the whole way through even though most of the funds come from the KIAC,” Mr Matthews said. “We are meant to be an advisory committee and we haven’t been able to give any advice. “We want a full review to make sure there is proper community consultation.” It is unclear at the moment how council’s contribution will be affected by the upcoming de-amalgamation of Kuranda into the new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC), but Cr Jensen said that MSC transfer manager Rod Ferguson had approved the process and that “those transactions will be balanced out.”

The Tablelands Regional Council has finalised the purchase of 51 Mabel Street for $1.3 million. Inset, Mayor Rosa Lee Long inspects progress on the renovation.
Who pays for this? By Ryan Groube The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has finalised the purchase of office space adjacent to its Atherton headquarters but it remains unclear who will foot the $1.3 million bill. In October, The Express exclusively broke the story that a faction within the TRC was looking to pass the cost of purchasing land and an unoccupied building at 51 Mabel Street onto Mareeba Shire ratepayers. The Transfer Committee – made up of Mareeba Shire Council transfer manager Rod Ferguson and TRC chief executive Ian Church – are yet to formally discuss the prospect of the sale being included as a de-amalgamation expense. “The contract [for the sale] has been settled but we haven’t discussed it formally,” Mr Fer-
guson said. “I expect that an argument will be made to include some part of the purchase as a de-amalgamation expense.” Mr Ferguson however reiterated that in his view he “didn’t see it being a de-amalgamation cost”. The TRC also concede in a media statement that the “likely outcome of this matter is that agreement will not be able to be reached at the Transfer Committee”. If not, the matter will be forwarded to Local Government Minister David Crisafulli who will act as the final arbiter. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the acquisition is significant in centralising services in Atherton which would lead to savings for ratepayers. “The purchase of an existing office building right next door at a price that came in at less

than half that of the next best option has provided ratepayers with a very cost-efficient answer to the issues highlighted by de-amalgamation,” she said. “This purchase will see us be able to grow here in Atherton well into the future. We are very fortunate that this came on the market when it did. “It will cater for growth and by centralising everything in one location we will be much more efficient then having staff spread out all over the place.” On November 22, Cr Lee Long inspected work being done on the building with staff expected to be moved into the building in early December. A final ruling on who will pay for the land and building is expected to be announced before the end of the year.

PAGE 6 Mareeba Express, Wednesday, November 27, 2013
In the 13 years Gordon Turner has been the top traffic cop in the Mareeba District he has come to dread this time of year. In a one-on-one interview with The Express’ Ryan Groube, Sergeant Turner speaks about the upcoming Christmas Road Safety campaign and why staying safe on the roads is everyone’s responsibility. Q: Is this traditionally the worst time on the regions roads? A: This time of year usually sees the most amount of traffic on the roads at any one time. People tend to push things too far be it with the distances they travel, how far they drive in one stint, or how fast they drive. Q: With that being said, does the extra traffic on the roads lead to a higher crash rate? A: It does, unfortunately. The crash rate usually increases during the holiday period which starts from when primary school finishes on December 13 and goes right through until the end of January. That is our Christmas and New Year and school holiday period and is a period where we concentrate a lot of our resources to. Generally our crash rates can go up by at least a third compared to other periods throughout the year. Q: What will the focus of police be during the Christmas period? A: Our focus in this district will continue to be the highways because that is where most of our fatals - or just about all our fatals - have been occurring on the highways within the district. We need to ensure that we have that police presence out there doing our highway patrols with mobile radar and also our static RBT to create a presence and hopefully with our presence on the roads jolt people back into alertness. The idea is to get as many police out there as we can during the Christmas holiday period and keep people doing the right thing. Q: Will police be relying solely on local resources this season or will additional resources be made available from other districts? A: With the new Road Policing Command structure the district that we used to know as Mareeba, Innisfail and Cairns is now one big district. We are now working with the other patrol groups and we’re extending our patrols into those areas where we would normally have just kept to our own area. I am providing staff in patrol-
ling the Bruce Highway over Christmas to create a greater presence down there. The Mulligan Highway continues to be our worst road in the patrol group and Cairns are now providing regular patrols up here along the Mulligan Highway to Cooktown in a bid to prevent some of those fatals. Ever since 2006 when they bitumen the road from Cairns to Cooktown it has continued, every year, to be overrepresented for fatal crashes. Q: What do you attribute this time of year being the most dangerous time on our roads? A: It is a combination of all those factors (speed, fatigue and drink driving) combined with the fact that there are more vehicles on the roads. Also, the roads on the Tableland are not the best. They were built in the horse and cart days and they have never been upgraded to deal with the sheer volume of traffic and the type of traffic that we have. Inexperience also brings a lot of people undone at this time of the year with the road conditions becoming tricky as we enter the wet season and people aren’t slowing down to the road conditions. When we’ve had a dry spell and we get some rain there is a lot of oil and grease on the roads that lifts and creates hazardous conditions. Q: Does the extra callouts during this time a year take a toll on staff personally? A: For all emergency services this is the time of the year we dread most because from the nature of the crashes – high speed, fatigue and alcohol usually results in the worst type of injury to the extent they become fatal crashes and we’ve certainly had a bad year for those and we’d certainly like to get through the holiday period without any. It doesn’t just impact us though, for families that suffer the worst case scenarios with fatal crashes, every year afterwards this time becomes a memorial time so Christmas and New Year is a sad time for them because they have lost loved ones and at the end of the day that is what we are trying to avoid. Q: What is the key state-wide road safety message this year? A: The message that we’re pushing through the Road Policing Command is that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. If everyone took that on board and thought about their involvement in the road safety program across the start and took their part seriously perhaps it may go a long way to reducing the road toll which every year continues to increase.

A top health official says Atherton’s hospital may not be able to handle the increased demand caused by the looming closure of a private medical imaging service. On December 20, Cairns Diagnostic Imaging (CDI), which offers X-Ray and ultrasound services, will close its Atherton office. CDI’s managing radiologist Doctor Jean Haddad cited increased competition in both the public and private sectors as the reasons behind the closure. “We have been committed to the Atherton community for many years and have tried very hard to maintain our service. But with the
local public hospital radiology service and increased radiology options in the Cairns region we are unable to sustain and staff a local private radiology service in Atherton,” he said. “We understand that this will impact the local community and we are encouraging local doctors to refer routine examinations to the local public radiology service at Atherton Hospital.” The chief operating officer of the Cairns and Hinterland Health and Hospital Service Robin Moore has not ruled out the possibility of the public system being overwhelmed by the closure. “This closure is expected to increase demand for imaging services
at Atherton Hospital,” he said. “Should this demand exceed local resources, some patients may be referred to Cairns Hospital in order to meet their medical imaging needs in the most timely and appropriate manner.” CDI falls under the umbrella of Brisbane-based Queensland X-Ray which markets itself as “the largest diagnostic imaging practice in Queensland.” The Express made efforts to contact Queensland X-Ray chief executive Dr Philip Dubois to find out how many job losses would be felt. A spokesperson from Queensland X-Ray said that things were “still being finalised”.

Remembrance Day disgrace Who is to blame for what happened on Remembrance Day, or should I say what didn’t happen on that day? The president of the Mareeba RSL told me that the Tablelands Regional Council had been informed one month ago about what was needed and normally done every year since the inception of Remembrance Day. The road wasn’t closed and no PA system was supplied.
Chairs were put out at the last minute by the RSL’s maintenance man. In other words total disrespect was shown for this day and the men who gave up their lives for our country. Roy Tyler Emerald Creek

Pastor says ‘Thank You’ A huge Thank You to all the people of Mareeba and the Tableland who were extremely generous in donating to our community food bank. We would also like to thank Carl Portella and The Express newspaper for freely promoting our annual food drive and making it the success it currently is. The needy also say thanks. May God richly bless you all. Have an incredibly good Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thanks for caring. Pastor Jeff Xhafer Living Waters Christian Churches Katter lets fly at CASA Just this week in Canberra, we have had discussions at the highest level with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) officials, making light of the fact that the burdensome and onerous cost structures being imposed upon people in aviation are driving our North Queensland small charter operators to ground their planes. I’m informed continuously and uniformly that time delays, red tape and subsequent cost impacts are being imposed by CASA. To point to one example, there have been reports of hold ups on medical reports being issued to pilots. Without a medical certificate, pilots cannot fly. At the present moment this issue seems to be widespread throughout the industry. We have increased our pressure on CASA and expressed, yet again, our extreme dissatisfaction with pilots and small charter operators throughout Kennedy and Australia, having their planes grounded and businesses closed down whilst they await the good graces of medical administrators in CASA. As we write this, our repair and maintenance engineers in North Queensland are under severe stress - crisis some might even say, again due to the requirements imposed on them by CASA. Again, another example of Government unreasonably placing demands on small operators. I’ve expressed our extreme unhappiness at this situation and to say the least, I’m not even pleased remotely. We have demanded that these issues be addressed immediately. Bob Katter Member for Kennedy Awareness month for cancer It’s one of the hardest cancers to detect and treat, but that doesn’t stop us from trying. Every day researchers are learning more about pancreatic cancer. And this November, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, we’re calling on all Far North Queensland locals to help raise awareness and funds to beat the disease. The signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer often go undetected, but if you detect it early, doctors have a better chance of treating it more effectively. While we don’t have a routine screening test for pancreatic cancer, it is vital to know the symptoms of the disease. These include pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, changes in bowel motions and jaundice. If you or someone you love has any of these symptoms, don’t delay talking to your GP. Right now CCQ is funding a number of research projects that aim to help control pancreatic cancer and improve treatment options. It remains one of the five leading causes of cancer death in Queensland – but with community support we can help more Queenslanders survive this tragic disease. Queenslanders with questions about pancreatic cancer or seeking support can call us anytime on 13 11 20, Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm. ADVERTORIAL
Learn how to create the life you desire
Is life wearing you down? Sometimes the most important thing you can do is just get away from it all, even if it’s just for a day. Successful lifestyle coach Roberta Alexander, founder of Top Living International, has mastered the art of living a balanced life, as well as creating the life she desired for herself and her family. In an exclusive one off retreat, Roberta and her experienced team will teach you the fundamentals to creating a bigger and better life for yourself today and for years to come. You too will learn the art of living in balance and creating the life you desire and deserve. Ask yourself these three simple questions Do you want to live a life with less stress? Do you want more energy? How do you create your top life? If yes is your answer than this day is for you. Roberta says “A top life is feeling completely fulfilled and living each day in total balance and harmony. It’s about being grateful about the life you live and being in touch with your inner self
and needs. It is also about having the space for growth within and time to for others”. “Many people that I have coached possess the same problem over and over and it affects their health and mental wellbeing – this is the problem of letting go.” “Experiences are what generally help shape and form a person. Positive experiences tend to fuel a person to do more, however negative experiences can stop a person from progressing and moving on to a positive life path and direction.” With clients around Australia and overseas, Top Living International has received praise for their work and commitment to helping people change their lives for the better. Client Robyn Richardson of Brisbane said working with Roberta has changed her life. “I have worked with Roberta regarding my life experience for the past year and the transformation and growth I have had in this time is astounding. Roberta truly teaches the art of living a life of complete fulfilment daily. I am so grateful to have learnt these tools and strategies that will carry me through for years to come”. Formed a little over two years ago, Top Living International specialises in one-on-one, plus group coaching sessions. Roberta is a mobile wellness and lifestyle coach and will work a coaching program to suit your needs. Roberta’s aim is to help people achieve their Top Life no matter what their dream is. The Mind, Body and Spirit Retreat is on for one day only at the beautiful Kewarra Beach Resort and Spa. Due to the secluded nature and personalised attention of this course, spots are limited. Katherine Apelt (third from left) is looking to reunite with any members of the Mareeba Baronelles Marching Girls, who took to Mareeba’s streets in 1958 and 1959.
Were you in this marching band? By Boyd Robertson A Mareeba woman hopes an old photograph might bring forth buried memories and reunite the members a girls marching band she performed alongside decades ago. Katherine Apelt, 73, was a member of the Mareeba Baronelles Marching Band in 1958 and 1959, and is looking to get in touch of any others of the group, which numbered about 12 and performed in street marches during Mareeba’s festivals. Through her own efforts she has already found several of the Baronelles still living in Mareeba but is hopes that seeing the photograph might “jog the memory” of any other remaining members.
“We were all 17 or 18 at the time we were doing this, and now we’re all grandmothers,” she said. “In Mareeba, it was a different time – women’s dresses didn’t usually go about the knee and there we are marching down the street with those little skirts on so we caused quite a stir. “Some of us were still in high school and some of us were working at the time and I remember we were all organised by a man named Dodd O’Connell.” Ms Apelt is also looking to find any members of the Red Robins marching group, which performed alongside the Baronelles and consisted of younger girls. Anyone wanting to contact Ms Apelt can reach her on 4093 2558.

Funding for Cooktown school Member for Cook David Kempton has announced the State Government has allocated $7 million for the construction of a Special Assistance School campus in Cooktown. Project facilitator Catholic Education Services were awarded up to $6,907, 684 to construct a 32-bed boarding facility, services and supervisors, learning areas, dining and parents’ room, home economics kitchen, administration and amenities, a covered area and associated walkways. It will cater for up to 38 students with 32 weekly boarders from the
wider community including Hope Vale and Wujal Wujal. “It is designed to meet the needs of young people aged from 12 to 17 currently disengaged from mainstream education, Mr Kempton said. “In many cases, kids are not attending school or have a pattern of attendance or behaviour that makes them more likely to leave school without any qualifications or achievements. “The ultimate goal is to help these young people recognise their own potential and assist them in readjusting to mainstream education or seeking further training or employment.”

Cook Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott welcomed the funding. “To me this school is one of the most significant educational and social initiatives for Cooktown and the surrounding regions in recent history, certainly since I’ve been here,” he said. “This funding means we can push forward, it is a culmination of five years of collaboration with the council, CES, government and community groups.” Cr Scott said a working group made up of community members, including representatives from the local Catholic and State Schools, would be
heavily involved in making sure the capacity of the new school’s services were delivered appropriately. CES executive director Br Paul Hough said that as the largest nongovernment education provider in the region, the Catholic sector was prepared to play a larger role in providing school options for the most disadvantaged young people in the far north. Kagara fined The former operator of the Baal Gammon copper mine, Kagara, has pleaded guilty to three charges relating to the unauthorised release of contaminated water into Jamie Creek and the Walsh River west of Herberton during the 2011/12 wet season. Kagara was fined $120,000 contravening an environmental protection order, unlawfully causing material environmental harm, and breaching a condition of the mine’s Environmental Authority. In September 2013, the owner of the mine, Baal Gammon Copper Pty Ltd, was fined $80,000 in relation to the discharges. “These matters resulted from an investigation which was initiated in early March 2012 after Kagara notified the Department that the mine experienced a release of suspected contaminated water into a nearby creek,” Queensland Environment Minister Andrew Powell said. “High concentrations of heavy metals, including copper, cadmium and arsenic were identified in Jamie Creek and Walsh River. This posed a potential risk to people living near the Baal Gammon copper mine.”
Car causes Atherton outage Power was cut to part of Atherton on November 19 after a motor vehicle hit a power pole on the corner of Roberts Street. Under the direction of emergency services, Ergon cut power to a feeder on the south side of town shortly before 1.00pm for the safety of police, ambulance and fire crews on the scene. Power was initially interrupted to more than 1,000 customers as a consequence, although crews were able to divert supply around the section of network near the accident scene and restore power to more than half of those affected within around 50 minutes. An Ergon spokesman said that the impact of the accident had extensively damaged the power pole. A remaining 392 customers in areas of east Atherton were without power until just before 6.30pm while Ergon crews replaced the pole and finalised safety checks. Crab catching season closed The annual spanner crab closed season commences from midnight November 20 to midnight December 20. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Russell Overton said the closed season protects spanner crabs during their breeding season when they are most vulnerable. “The closed season gives the crabs a chance to spawn, and helps replenish crab stocks for future generations to enjoy,” Mr Overton said. “Anyone caught disregarding the closed season for spanner crabs could face a maximum penalty of $110,000 or an on-the-spot fine of $440.”

DIMBULAH LIONS CLUB INC
Tobacco Project Official Unveiling Saturday 30th November, 2013 Congratulations to the Dimbulah Lions for realising their long held ambition to create a monument to the tobacco industry. The project is a significant piece of work which will please and inform future generations on the importance of the tobacco industry to the history of the Mareeba Dimbulah area. Tobacco was the crop which formed the cradle from which everything that we have today has emerged. In a few short years it could easily be forgotten, but for those people like members of the Dimbulah Lions, who remember their industry, indeed our industry, with affection. Those of us who were involved remember the good times and the bad. We remember the hail storms, the development which followed the water from Tinaroo, the sore backs when picking lugs, the smell of the bulk shed, looper caterpillars, blue mould and the smell of burning antbed on cold winter evenings. Yes we remember, because we must. The tobacco industry was our strength and our future. It is no more, but this important project will remind us, and we will be thankful. Our community is forever indebted to the Dimbulah Lions Club for their wisdom and their hindsight.

The rich history of tobacco By Remzi Mulla The tobacco timeline - early years: • Seed brought to Australia by the first settlers • First grown around Parramatta in 1790 • 160ha grown around Sydney by 1840 • Commercial scale in Myrtleford (VIC) in 1860 and Texas 1880 • 1900 there were 614 manufacturers of tobacco products. 103 were registered, the rest was chop-chop • Early 1900s NSW major producer • 1928-29 experimental farm set up in Mareeba (Parada) • By 1932-33, there were 800 growers in Mareeba and Dimbulah • 1933, 3000 farmers went broke in Australia • 20,000 acres were grown • 1932-33 every state and territory was growing tobacco • 1930-1950 was a boom or bust period • Biggest problem was availability of water: dry farming was not viable • 1950 state government looked at Building Tinaroo Dam to expand the tobacco industry Tobacco was the mainstay and the most important crop grown in the Mareeba and Dimbulah district. The industry was responsible in the development of the following infrastructure and services:
• Population growth • Tinaroo Dam and associated irrigation channel system • Prime Research facilities • Engineering services workshops • Road infrastructure development • Electrical transmission infrastructure • Business infrastructure facilities The above facilities did not only service the tobacco industry but were instrumental in the birth of other industries, for which the area now currently depends upon. We must not underestimate the value of tourism to the district. This project will relate to the history of the tobacco industry through all the facets of production. The tobacco industry was a major contributor in the development of the local community in the area and therefore needs to be preserved for future generations.

DIMBULAH LIONS CLUB INC
Tobacco Project Official Unveiling Saturday 30th November, 2013
Dimbulah unveils monument to days past Recently over the past few years, the Dimbulah Lions Club made the decision to undertake a project that would be an outstanding dedication to the Dimbulah community and surrounding districts. This project would be meaningful, informative and above all, withstand the passage of time. After some considerable thought, it was decided that a tobacco Project would be ideal and the most obvious choice. Without a doubt, it can be said that the infrastructure and lifestyle of the Dimbulah and Mareeba Districts were developed with the introduction of the ever so important Tobacco Industry. Having started in the early 1900’s on a very small scale and pioneered by a few individuals, it would have been without a shadow of a doubt, a difficult and arduous task. With little or no information regarding the agronomy of Tobacco farming and no irrigation in existence, farmers were totally at the mercy of Mother Nature. The tobacco industry grew very quickly with great enthusiasm. Enormous expansion took place and lots of people who immigrated from abroad, saw the tobacco industry as a great opportunity to settle and develop their prosperity and create a new life for themselves. With so much interest in the tobacco industry from newly settled farmers, there also came great interest from government bodies, manufacturers and businesses. As a result, the Australian Tobacco Industry was firmly established.
This project is now complete and ready to be unveiled this Saturday, November 30, commencing at 3pm. It is a monument and symbol that will be representing all peoples that have had anything to do with the tobacco industry.
“The Lions Club and its members felt very strongly that such an industry and its important role in our community, should never be forgotten.” People who pass through these communities should know the history and how it all started. Tobacco was one such industry that helped to build these communities. I know that people are enthusiastically looking forward to seeing the final result. There are people coming from all walks of life who at one stage or another in their lives had something to do with tobacco. It will be a day filled with nostalgia, story-telling and re-establishing old acquaintances. Above all it will be a day to reminisce, catch-up and talk about the good old days.

The LAND Phone tapping scandal may wreak havoc for cattle trade By Boyd Robertson Possible damage to the AustralianIndonesian cattle trade in the wake of the phone tapping scandal might have some Queensland graziers nervous but others are saying that cool heads will prevail and exports will continue unabated. Since the spying scandal erupted on November 18 the Indonesian government has stated it will “review the relationship” between the two countries, with president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono suspending military and intelligence cooperation with Australia. Indonesia, which is Australia’s biggest market for exported beef, has only recently raised its live cattle import levels after a long period of negotiations following a suspension in 2011 over humane treatment of the animals. Although there is no official change to beef import policies yet, Dr Yudhoyono met with agriculture minister Suswono on November 20 and trade minister Gita Wirjawan said on November 21 that trade policies with Australia would be reviewed. Hughenden grazier Rob Atkinson said disruptions to the newly-repaired liveexport trade would be disastrous for the Australian cattle industry, which is only now beginning recovery from the previous suspension. “I don’t want to be an alarmist but there is a lot of concern that this doesn’t affect the trade,” Mr Atkinson said. “Any negative talk about the beef trade has every producer worried.
“What happened in 2011 sent ripple effects through the entire country and the industry here is just starting to recover. “It is paramount that this positive situation remains in place.” However AgForce state councillor Russel Lethbridge, who runs cattle near Einasleigh, said that trade would most likely continue as normal. He said market forces and existing business relationships with Indonesia would override any diplomatic wrangling. Indonesia’s inability to meet its own beef requirements would mean the demand for imported Australian cattle would remain high and protect the live export trade, according to Mr Lethbridge. “To be honest the Indonesian people need our beef as much as we need to sell it, so the Indonesian government won’t reject Aussie cattle,” he said. “The Indonesians are nowhere near achieving beef self-sufficiency themselves at the moment, and we already have a good working relationship with their industry – I think the live cattle trade will be insulated. “The less everyone on the sidelines of this says about the matter the better – it should be left to senior diplomats and politicians to work it all out so we can get on with things.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said the scandal had undone years of hardwork by many within government and the industry in rebuilding ties with Indonesia.

Mangoes are ready! By Boyd Robertson
The first Tableland mangoes of the season are being packed and sent to markets around the country as the region’s growers start to pick early varieties of the fruit. On the Tableland, the westernmost growers pick first thanks to higher temperatures and brighter conditions, but the early rains this year could throw a spanner in the works. Mark and Helen Yelavich at Sunset Orchards in Mutchilba were among the first farmers to ship this year, with markets in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne along with the Coles supermarket chain on the customer list. Mr Yelavich said current wet conditions not present at the start of the 2012 season could complicate this year’s crop if they held up. “This time last year it was dry and right now we’ve got rain and storms,” he said. “If we keep getting consistent rain it will affect the quality of the fruit but right now all it’s doing is making the pickers wet. “Other than that it looks pretty much the same so far.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said mangoes were an important cash crop for the Tableland. “Mangoes are about 10 to 15 per cent of the total agricultural industry in Mango farmers Mark and Helen Yelavich from Mutchilba the Tableland – they’re worth about 30 with one of the region’s first trays of the season. to 45 million dollars to us per annum,” Mr Moro said. varies, Mr Moro said that there was a roughly equal “And our product goes all over the place, not just three-way breakdown between local professional down south but to Singapore, Tokyo, London and eve- workers, backpackers and Tableland students on break rywhere else. from university or school. “Everyone loves the Australian mango.” The Tableand picking season is expected to run all While the number of pickers employed each season the way through to the end of February.
Values improved this week but numbers down Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 387 head of prime and store cattle this week. Numbers reduced by 73 head, values for the better finished heavy bullocks and cows did improve but rates remained unchanged for heavy slaughter bulls. Bullocks and steers suitable for the local trade sold to val-
ues 1-2 c/ kg stronger than last week and bullocks suitable for the export slaughter trade improved by 4-5 c/ kg for the best on offer. Cows suitable for the local wholesale market remained unchanged and returned a similar average to the previous week. Cows suitable for the export
slaughter trade improved in value with some very heavy cows selling to rates 4 c/ kg above last week’s top of 138 c/ kg. There has been very little change in rates being offered for heavy slaughter bulls with one or two bulls returning to the paddock to breed at 138 c/ kg.

www.mareeba4880realestate.com.au Here is an opportunity for you to purchase what the current owners thought is the best of the Rayfield blocks. Regrettably they have to part with it. The big plus points are that it is at the end of a no through road, it faces the North, it already has a one neighbour so there is a fence on that side and there still is a vacant block on the other side if you wanted a double. As you probably already know at Rayfield land comes with the town water hooked up and there is a bore hole as well. Take a drive to see for yourself and let me know what you think. Students shine at Music house Quest

The sixth Music House Quest was held on Sunday, November 17, at the APA Theatre in Atherton. The all day event that saw more than students of The Music House participate in almost 150 songs for Judges Pauline Stevens, Karren Glaspy and Pam Strelnikoff. SOROPTIMIST TROPICAL TABLELANDS raised funds for Carinya Home for the Age after holding their recent Trash and Treasure Sale. Soroptimist ladies donated goods for the stalls and morning tea for the Atherton Guides who celebrated 80 years in Atherton. The day was a success, and in line with our policy of helping women and girls. They would like to thank everyone who donated and supported us on the day. RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
There IS loads of fun and laughter in the new movie at The Rising Sun Cinema, at the Mareeba RSL Club this week . Johnny Knoxville stars in JACKASS - BAD GRANDPA, which will not only appeal to fans of this franchise, but to a much wider audience. There's plenty of hilarious situations as the naughtiest grandad around, played by Knoxville, escorts his grandson across America. Also showing is THE BUTLER, based on a true story and with a top cast including Oprah Winfrey, Robin Williams, Jane Fonda, John Cusack and Forest Whittaker as the butler. THE HUNGER GAMES – CATCHING FIRE, has had a sensational launch week , and continues with daily screenings all this week. Remember, you don't have to go to Cairns to see the latest movies – all the big ones come to the Rising Sun at the same time as the big cities.
Students as young as three years old enjoyed the friendly competition. Junior (up to grade 7) Aggregate winner was Albina Niceforo, who received a perfect score from one judge for her rendition of Little Polka Dot Bikini, as well as singing whilst accompanying herself on piano, guitar and uke-

entertainment the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places, and situations that give new meaning to the term "childrearing". The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons, and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.
THE HUNGER :CATCHING FIRE
Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE BUTLER
Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) has been the Chief Butler for eight consecutive US presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Working intimately with these world leaders at the White House, from his unique vantage point Cecil Gaines witnesses radical transformations in American history through the civil rights movement to Vietnam and the Cold War - and sees how those changes affect his life and family. SUMMER SEASON GRAND FINALS WEDNESDAY 27TH NOVEMBER, 2013 The Grand Finals of the Mareeba Summer Season Fixtures will be decided this Wednesday 27th of November. All grand finals are sure to be keenly contested and supporters should witness an excellent display of basketball. Semi-Pros and Lieutenant –Dans will contest the senior men grand final. No doubt Andy Harris, Christy and Garrett Perks are key players for Semi-Pros. While top performances from David Schmidt and Daniel Ruggeri are required for Lieutenant Dans hope for the championship title. Baiada Steggles are slight favourites to take out the senior laddies grand finals over Gummaz. Natasha Grogan, Rosina Gutchen and Angie Goodyear require to produce top performances in order to gain any advantage over Baiada Steggles, while they must contain the strong court play of Mar Hagger and the free scoring ability of Tua Aue to prevent a Baiada Steggles victory. Wednesday’s program commences at 3:40 when the young under-10 juniors will display their talent. While under-12 junior teams Taipans and Tigers meet in the opening grand final at 4:10 pm. Zac Myrteza and Toby Kennedy may well play a major role in a Taipans victory. Tigers will look towards Zayd Myrteza and Arosh Heenkenda for any success going their way. Kangaroos appear the team to defeat for top honours in the under-14 junior division. Jonah Hastie is certainly a match winner
for Kangaroos and None-ya will require a top team effort if they are to topple Kangaroos for the championship title. Certainly Sarrah Myrteza and Dale Moss can give None-Ya every winning chance by producing their best form. Bullets are strong favourites to claim the under-16 junior title over Panthers. Lochlan Anthony plays strongly for Panthers, but needs necessary support from other players to cause Bullets any problems. To gain top honour, Panthers must overcome the outstanding form of Daniel Ruggeri and also Ayden Smith, who has improved greatly over the season. Mareeba’s Chris Adams has been selected in the Queensland Under 12s team which will contest the national championships next year Picture: Peter Roy Lisa Curry takes swimmers through drills on the starting block and inset Liam Davies was given the opportunity to wear Curry’s Commonwealth Games gold medal and showed how he’d celebrate
Olympian inspires By Ryan Groube Former Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lisa Curry visited the Tableland last week, hosting a series of clinics hoping to inspire the next wave of Australian swimming stars. On Saturday morning, Curry held a free hour-long swimming clinic at the Mareeba Swimming Pool where she spoke to members of the public and Mareeba Wildcats swim squad before taking them through some basic drills. Much of the work took place on the starting blocks, but Curry said swimmers at the Mareeba club were disadvantaged by not having access to standard starting blocks used at major swimming carnivals. “These kids can train for eight months and then go to a carnival with racing blocks and not know how to get off to the best start,” she said. “If you don’t get a good start you can find yourself a second behind all the other swimmers right away. “If the club can get access to a government grant to get even one of these blocks it would make such a big difference.” Talking to The Express after the clinic, Curry said despite the challenges of living in regional areas youngsters could still aspire to representing their country at the highest level. “Australian sporting history is littered with people from regional areas,” she said. “Just because people come from the country doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t make it one day.” Curry cautioned however that for regional swimmers and sportspeople more generally, to reach the upper echelons of their sport, they needed to be willing to work hard and listen to their coaches. “To be successful a child needs to be involved in a good program. Most of our coaches, even those in re-
gional areas, are very well trained and should be respected and listened to,” she said. “The kids who take what they are told on board and who tick off small results and small achievements have the best chance.” Mareeba Swimming Pool licensee and Wildcats coach June Cotter said the value of having Curry speak to her students was invaluable. “A lot of what we went through today is what I teach them anyway but it has a bit more weight when it is coming from an Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist,” she said. “It is amazing the inspiration that kids can take out of meeting and learning from someone like Lisa.” Cotter said it had been a little bit disappointing that Curry’s visit clashed with a major swim meet in Cairns and that a large portion of her squad had been unable to attend. Liam Davies, 10, was one of the children who attended the clinic and was given the opportunity to wear one of Curry’s “heavy” Commonwealth Games medals. Davies said meeting Ms Curry had been “exciting” and that he looked forward to continuing his burgeoning swimming career, especially freestyle and backstroke. Curry arrived on the Tableland on November 22 where she made a speech at Atherton State High School and to the Atherton Chamber of Commerce before travelling to the Dimbulah Swimming Pool. After the clinic in Mareeba on Saturday, she attended the Atherton Family Fun Day at the town’s pool before delivering a motivational workshop at Mt Uncle Distillery in the evening. On Sunday, she visited the swimming pools at Mt Garnet and Kuranda. Curry’s visit was organised by the Tablelands Regional Council in partnership with Atherton IGA, Lake Tinaroo Resort, Atherton Coffee Club and TRC pool lessees.
Finals spots up for grabs as six-a-side heats up By Alex Srhoj The Mareeba United Football Club’s summer six-a-side competition has reached its half way mark with four grades all playing for spots in the finals. After five rounds of play every competition is evenly based and up for grabs. In the mens A-grade comp, Los Torros, lead by Bulls captain Victor Madrid leads the way unbeaten, with some fast paced techniqual football. Road Runners lead by Bulls vice-captain Wayne Srhoj is a close second using their experi-
ence to overcome their more youthful counterparts. Positions three to six are up for grabs with four teams fighting it out of the final two finals spots. In the ladies A-grade, Intimidators, Ghensi and Snatch are close in the race for the top spot, with all teams evenly balanced the top four could come down to the wire. The ladies football has shown some quality football and some exciting close matches. The competition was forced to take a break last week due to the rain, but will resume tonight (Wednesday).
Queensland calling By Boyd Robertson Mareeba schoolboy Chris Adams will represent Queensland at the bat after being picked for the state’s Under 12s Schoolboys Cricket team. Adams, 11, will take part in eight days of games at the national schoolboys championships in Bendigo in early January 2014, and was the only far northern Queenslander on the side. He made the side after a standout performance captaining the Peninsula team at state titles in Brisbane at the beginning of November, scoring an average of 40 runs over the course of five games. The finals in Bendigo will be preceded by a rigorous seven-day training camp over the new year in Brisbane. If making the national schoolboys side wasn’t enough, Adams will also travel to the Gold Coast on December 16 for a four-day Under-13s club championship representing Mareeba. The Year 7 St Thomas’s School student said he was “feeling pretty good” about the nomination for the state team. “I didn’t really expect to get onto the team, even though I had some pretty good games down in Brisbane,” he said. “I’m definitely keen to score some runs in the nationals.” “It’s exciting and I’m a bit nervous – it’ll be the hardest cricket I’ve ever played.” Adams, who primarily enters the field as a batsman, is a fan of Australian cricketer David Warner and aims to
emulate his aggressive style. “I like David because he likes to score quickly,” he said. “I play with one foot in the crease, I like to go at the ball and when it comes to runs I know that there’s one run in fielder’s throw so if I see him with the ball in his hand I go for it. “The kids bowling in Bendigo are going to be really good so I’m going to have to make runs off good balls and not just wait for trash – but I’m also going to have to be patient and not get too ahead of myself.” Adams’s dad Robert “Bomber” Adams of the Mareeba Bandits said he was immensely proud of his son’s achievements. “He’s done really well to get to this level, it’s a huge effort,” he said. “And there is a real big difference in being selected from up north, a kid has to be five times better than kids from Brisbane to get noticed. “He’s been playing cricket ever since he could hold a bat – I’d get out of the car from work and he’d instantly be there trying to get me to throw a ball at him.” The junior Adams also enjoys football and camping but finds his greatest enjoyment on the cricket pitch. “You’ve got to absolutely love cricket or you won’t like it at all,” he said. “You can’t just like it a little bit – you have to love it to play. “I’d definitely love to be a professional cricketer but I’ve got a way to go yet.”
