Harvesters is so grateful for the work of our volunteers, who bring their hearts and hands to the job of feeding hungry people! We could not feed 141,500 people every month without the dedication and service of our volunteers.

In Harvestes service area 364,090 people are food insecure and missing an estimated 65.2 million meals annually. Of this number, 112,470 are children. And only 46 percent qualify for government assistance.

MAREI has held a networking vendor night every summer since 2004. Along about 2013, this became a free event, asking the vendors to pay their sponsor fee to a local charity, and asking all attendees for a $5 donation at the door for entry. The charity MAREI has supported since 2013 has been the local food bank Harvesters. In 2015, when the Kansas City Roayls managed to be snag many of the American League positions for the All Star Baseball game, MAREI came to the realization that the monthly meeting night in July falls on All Star Game Night. With this realization the first All Star Networking night became official. This meeting features MAREI local and National Business Associates as well as outside vendor sponsors, local experts, and meeting attendees all

coming together to learn, to network, to talk a little baseball and to collect monetary donations to Harvester's to feed Kansas City's hungry. Attendees to this event are asked for a $5 donation at the door to support Harvesters. Sponsors were asked for donations of time, money and and this year items for our Charity Auction.

Over the years we have raised $1,000 and provided tens of 1000s of meals. At the time of printing we had about $2700 in sponsor fees and another $2000 in value of auction items. You can do the math, we will probably fall a bit short. We are asking for your help now for AllStarNetworking 2019, think about being a sponsor with a booth at the event, an ad in the program and an item in the auction.

Just like last year at this time, prospective home buyers should expect a competitive housing market for the next several months. With payrolls trending upward and unemployment trending downward month after month in an extensive string of positive economic news, demand remains quite strong. Given the fact that gradually rising mortgage rates often infuse urgency to get into a new home before it costs more later, buyers need to remain watchful of new listings and make their offers quickly. Although home sales may actually drop in year-over-year comparisons over the next few months, that has more to do with low inventory than a lack of buyer interest. As lower days on market and higher prices persist year after year, one might rationally expect a change in the outlook for residential real estate, yet the current situation has proven to be remarkably sustainable likely due to stronger fundamentals in home loan approvals than were in place a decade ago. real estate news Interior Inspections & Licensing in KCMO Last year we were able to defeat the Healthy Homes Initiative that would have required the registration of all rental properties for a fee and some form of interior inspection at the City Council level. City Council members did not find the need for the ordinance when they weighed the benefits against the costs. However, the ordinance did not go away and a coalition of supporters through a petition drive was successful in getting a version of the ordinance on the ballot for August 7th in Kansas City Missouri. You can visit HealthyHomesKC.com to see the reasoning behind the initiative. They contend that too many people in Kansas City live in unhealthy, unsafe, substandard housing and licensing and inspecting rental properties will somehow fix the problem.

Here at MAREI, we have an ongoing blog post about the issues at www.MAREI.org/HealthHomes2018 where you can go to find links to the city's website and details about the ordinance. The basics are that all rentals will need to be registered for a fee, $20 and based on tenant complaint or whatever random schedule the director decides upon. There are many unknown questions and the biggest is what will this little ordinance transform into as the Director grows and changes it. Kansas City currently requires all rental and vacant property to be registered for free. Other cities that have had similar ordinances have either gotten progressively more intrusive in their regulations or have been sued for constitutionality. Tax Reform Implementation: ensure that the provisions in the just-enacted tax reform legislation including the new 20 percent deduction for pass-through income are implemented. Seller Financing: continue to support the Seller Finance Coalition and HR 1360 to expand the use of Seller Financing from 3 to 24 properties in a twelve-month period. Companion Animals: continue to address the issue and the over-abundance of a cottage industry supporting pseudo ADA claims and demeaning the rights of the truly disabled. Fair Housing and Disparate Impact: clarify HUD's enforcement practices in light of regulatory and legal efforts, and improve compliance resources for rental housing providers. ADA Reform: continue to push for an end to costly, frivolous ADA lawsuits. Flood Insurance: seek long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, enact reforms of the program that would afford better coverage options to operators of rental housing, and capitalize on efforts to bolster private market solutions for flood coverage.

2018 Policy Priorities at the National Level. Criminal Background Checks: protect the ability of rental operators to consider criminal history in employment and residential screening. Consumer Reporting: ensure that reforms of the consumer reporting process and resident screening system do not hamper necessary business operations of rental property operators. Section 8 Rental Assistance: to modernize and streamline the program to attract private sector participation as well as seek reliable funding and reinforce the voluntary nature of the program. Fourth Amendment: Realize that all persons have the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, Not My Problem: keep in mind there are issues brewing across the metro that may not be where you live or invest, but should more intrusive regulation pass in one city, look for it to come to your city soon after.
