JASELSKĂ KASĂ RNADIPLOMA PROJECT
Dwellings in the park. Focusing on new city structure, designing one group of houses round the central courtyard. Based on the urban planning proposal of the pre-diploma project.
A PLACE IN THE CITY DATE: 2012
WHAT`S GOING ON? Living in the park - connecting the advantages of being surrounded by nature with the vicinity of the city. Solitary houses, each containing 4-6 flats, are placed around the central courtyard, surrounded by the park, creating a gradient of public, semi-private and private spaces. The design aims to remove fences around the buildings by clearly defining the urban spaces. It also promotes the identity of the place, and of each individual group - each group of houses has its own facilities, and can be built in one stage. The design of the flats is simple, thus keeping the main focus on the surrounding, yet providing a quality accomodation of varied size.

JASELSKĂ KASĂ RNAFORMER MILITARY BARRACKS A conversion of military brownfield into a place, which creates a strong identity in the city. A free area of 4ha, lined by one of the most historically important city streets.
A PLACE IN THE CITY DATE: 2012
?
WHAT`S GOING ON? The area is characteristic by the duality - city and park. City - as the area is lined by a very important street through the history of Brno, it deserves a decent city house. The area of former barracks, 4ha of free space to create a new entity in the city, not to divide the place up and accomodate 1000 people. Therefore - park as a connecting element, inviting the city in, and creating a valuable and natural place for living.

STUDENT DWELLING WITH A GARDEN IN BRNO LOCATION: Brno, Úvoz street, CR
How to accomodate 80 students in a place with identity? What does a student need? Morning coffee (beer), three hours to finish a drawing, place to learn, but most of all, place to meet and talk and spread ideas. Garden or kitchen, both a living centre of student life, combined to form a platform for gathering and learning from each other.

Contact and interaction - the main place of contact is kitchen, a natural and obvious solution, and in order to highlight its importance - it has a prominent place on the facade! and moreover - a garden full of people can make people forget their dinner...

Noise - although there have always been apartement houses on this busy street, the current regulations do not allow for a living or sleeping room to be located on the street facade, thus, these need to be kept behind a noise reducing facade. In contrast with the usual dull facades against noise, this one bursts with life - place to sit and watch surroundings, read morning news, grow plants... all visible and attractive from the street, creating a pleasant street - house interaction.

DATE:

WHAT`S GOING ON? This project is not about a vision of a unique sculpture, it proposes a set of objects, that have quite universal usage and location. Single objects represent air molecules, in a scale that is suitable for human perception and, of course, usage as an alternative city mobiliar. The main goal of installing groups of these objects, besides cleaning air in the problematic areas of the city, is raising curiosity and ecological awareness of the inhabitants and passer-bies. Their suggested locations around Brno are places suffering from too much traffic, but having public places with unused potential.

RE-THINKING KONEČNÉHO SQUARE BRNO LOCATION: Brno, Konečného náměstí, CR
Put aside your shopping bag, roll of drawings, and rest yourself on the grass, lean against the tree. Forget the cars, trams, feel the city. Admire the gorgeous art nouveau architecture, the genius loci. Watch the passerbies, playing kids, people in the balconies - Konečného náměstí at its best!
CITY INTERVENTION TEAM:
Kateřina Benedová Marek Matrtaj
DATE:
2010 - 2011
WHAT`S GOING ON? City intervention, a project that aims to reclaim the great but forgotten public spaces, is about simple interventions that improve and foster the usage of the public space. Originally an initiative of two slovak architects, Wallo Sadovský, this idea spread to other cities as well, including Brno, and architects donate their projects and ideas in favour of the city - and public space! Konečného náměstí (square), is a remarkable place with three brilliand art nouveau buildings by Franz Pawlu. However, this place is plagued by heavy traffic, since three main roads directions cross right at this spot, weakening the urban potential of the square. Idea - cleaner place, less noise, more people, more activity - and, along with the idea of the city intervention project - no change to the traffic structure or city plan. Material required - 30 trucks of building waste, 15 trucks of soil, flower seeds, 200 concrete blocks + work
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL HOUSE IN PŘEROV BACHELORS PROJECT LOCATION: Přerov, Czech republic
City house on a river bank. Based around the idea of urban interaction, the house combines city-forming ; such as cafes and shops in the street level, free time centre for kids built around the roof terrace, and housing tower. The house is designed to attract people to the river bank, creating a valuable urban space.
PŘEROV RIVERFRONT DATE: 2010
WHAT`S GOING ON? the programme of the building consists of three supportive elements - flats, most of which are small-area flats for young or elderly - free time center for kids - helping the young families living atop and also beneficial for the neighbourhood - shops and restaurants on the groung level are supporting the riverside URBAN ATTRACTIVITY visually interesting free time center with a lot of activity attracts passer-bies and is a good trigger for urban interaction - look, something is happening there! there are people watching! + multiple entrances making a lively streetfront = attractive city spot !
IDENTITY city dominant vs. riverfront vs. přerov landscape different angles of view offer different experience passer-by ussually actively percieves only the first 3-4 floors, and therefore the riverfront is concieved so as to respect the height of the surrounding buildings - and the necessary dominant is recessed, being visible from a distance, creating an appealing and easy-to locate picture from the other side of the river.

ENTRANCE TO THE GARDENS AND CASTLE OF LEDNICE LOCATION: Lednice Unesco heritage, Czech Republic
The entrance to the gardens and the castle enlisted in the Unesco world cultural heritage was a complex task, requiring a sensitive approach to the neogothical castle in vicinity, the square of Lednice and the gardens.
ENTRANCE PAVILLIONS DATE: 2010
WHAT`S GOING ON? The desgn creates a transition between the public urban space and the gardens. Finally enclosing the existing square, yet inviting the people inside. Three main buildings (semi-public volumes), making space for three piazettas, two of which are housing cafes, providing more than an enrtance to the gardens, creating spaces to explore. The rhytmical spatial arrangement, simple shapes and focus on detail are key to this project, supporting the historical character of the place and not competing wiith the important elements of Lednice (the Unesco listed gardens and the castle)

DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT SACRAL SPACE IN VR LOCATION: virtual space
Virtual sacred space what does it take? Is it even possible? Arent the words virtual and sacral mutually exclusive? Physical sacral spaces are overwhelming, even for non-believers, their presence in time just seeps out of every brick pore- making it a remarkable place, but what happens in a space created by a stream of 0 and 1?
VR SACRAL SPACE DATE:
user

VR interior
2009
After realising this project gave more questions than answers, I have come to a conclusion that old fashioned sacral space as such is impossible in the virtual space, for in VR everything was programmed before, has a known creator and hence no mystery is left. The virtual reality, therefore, has little use in speaking the Gods word, but nonetheless can be used for self-reflection and meditation, because the inner self is the only sacral thing left in VR. Music is an ideal medium for the virtual space as it dilutes the conflicts of different faiths or attitudes. Hearing a choir in a gothic cathedral is a moving experience, for the great space, presence of others and yet the ability to focus inwards. In VR, immersed in a sacral music performance broadcasted via VR, one can decide, whether to join the crowd and be flooded by the warm light generated by the users, or drift away and meditate in a distance, aware that a lot of users are present as well, perhaps having the same aim. The VR place with no limits can offer new view on the best of the real sacral spaces (and other designs as well), and produce a lasting experience. These virtual places would later form a network of places for self-reflection, however, I focused on traditional forms to get the idea through more clearly. (available on video)

PRIMARY SCHOOL PRE-SCHOOL AND AUDITORIUM LOCATION: Hammarby Sjostad, Stockholm, SWE
Conceptually emerging from the surrounding terrain, the complex offers a varied spatial scheme, creating a playful, inspiring environment, and removing the institutional feeling, yet keeping the design simple enough for kids to understand.
EDUCATIONAL COMPLEX DATE:
2009
In the project of the school, the terrain served as a main source of inspiration. Not only it was already occupied by kids - obviously a good place for school, but it also created interesting configuration. Keeping this in mind, i wanted all the classrooms to have a direct access to the terrain, for possible outdoor learning or simple breaks or out-of-school activities. I have also opted for informal and inspirig designs of the clasrooms - every three classrooms are clustered around a common space, which stems from the terrain and has platforms of different height.

ROCKHOUSE COMPETITION LOW-ENERGY HOUSE The house has been designed around the ancient principle of the socrates house. Keeping in mind the modern needs for living, this house can create either a standalone structure, or can be assembled into a row housing structure.
PASSIVE HOUSE NO.12 TEAM:
Kateล ina Benedovรก Marek Matrtaj
DATE:
2009
WHAT`S GOING ON? The shape of the socrates house allows for winter gains and summer shading, with no need for moving parts. The whole structure is well insulated, with a concrete core of the house for thermal accumulation and subsequent heat/cold radiance as needed. The house also uses an underground heat exchange system under the garage. It is labelled with an A energy consumption label.
POLYFUNCTIONAL HOUSE IN BRNO LOCATION: Brno, Bratislavskรก street, CR
A mix of commerce, housing and administration in this building creates a lively spot on an elevated courtyard. Its location is an infamously known problematic area, although close to the centre and possessing great 19th century buildings, nicknamed the bronx of brno.
CITY HOUSE DATE:
2008
WHAT`S GOING ON? Elevated courtyard - creates a semi - public zone, keeping the place easily accessible, yet under very good visual control of the inhabitants and users. At the same time it enables a direct pedestrian access to the 2nd floor services, thus increasing their attractivity.
CAFE WITH A LOOKOUT TOWER ABOVE A RIVER LOCATION: Brno, Zbrojovka, CR
Conversion of a former military lookout tower into a cafe overlooking the river Svitava. Surrounded by objects subjected to demolition, the river cafe stands as a new orientation point on the newly designed river quay.
CAFE IN A TOWER DATE:
2007
WHAT`S GOING ON? Simplicity and rationality are the keywords in this project. The geometrically perfect shape of the tower, as well as the fine brickwork needed a decent counterpart - thus the simple shape, that embodies the airy volume of the cafe. The composition is strenghtened by the 9m cantilever over the river.
GOLF COURSE SHELTER LOCATION: ?
This structure-based work has been inspired by a traditional slovak craft - basket weaving. The shape comes from terrain undulations, that can be found on a golf course.
WEAVED HOUSE DATE:
2007
WHAT`S GOING ON? The elements creating the vauld are held together using pressure and friction forces. Moreover, the complex double curvature is created from flat pieces only. The entire construction is made of wood, which together with its simplicity ensures quick and cheap prefabrication and construction.
