Landscape Architecture

“
Landscape architects have the power to enhance connection between people and nature and facilitate interaction between each other. I believe that through our design work we can create spaces that are aesthetically beautiful, perfectly functional, and (ideally) inspirational. A good design is not only attractive, but also tells a story. I personally feel inspired in well-designed spaces and am excited to use my own skills to enhance the experiences of others. My decision to study landscape architecture was impulsive and borderline accidental. I’ve always leaned towards a design-related career, I just wasn’t entirely sure what specifically that might be. It wasn’t until I actually started classes when I really began to understand what the field entails. Landscape architecture marries my academic interests of math and sciences and art and design. My intention for my portfolio is to illustrate these strengths and display how I will use them to enhance spaces and inspire others. I hope it inspires you too!

The Scott Residence
The Task The intended goal for the project was to design and grade a residence for a chosen client. After surveying the assigned vacant lot in a quaint Athens neighborhood, it was evident that there were many restrictions to the site: the neighborhood’s specific zoning laws, the gradual slope from the lot’s south end to its north, the close proximity of the neighbor’s house to the shared property line, and the lot’s location across from Piedmont College on a relatively busy street. These limitations were only in addition to the specific assignment’s requirements of an accessory building with its own street access, a two-car driveway that didn’t require backing into the street, and a design that would efficiently mitigate stormwater runoff.

The Vision
This residential site is designed to function as both a social and a private space, meeting the client’s desires to entertain, garden, and unwind. The client preferred an accessory dwelling that doubled as an additional space for guests and an occasional AirBnB, so it was critical to create a sense of removal from the main residence but also maintain connectivity. Distinguishing the two dwellings by the retaining wall and raised gardening beds best enabled this vision. Due to the less desirable views across Hill Street, the client expressed more interest in having a more prominent side yard rather than front. The side yard functions as a barrier between the street and the more private areas of the site but will still sanction social interactions with the neighbors. CIRCULATION

Bishop House Redesign
The Task The objective of this assignment was to redesign a vacant, heavily eroded courtyard located in the University of Georgia’s North Campus. The site is sandwiched between a quaint office building, the College of Environment and Design, and a heavily used parking deck. The combination of the moderately steep topography and heavy shade from the myriad of trees made the site particularly tricky to design and landscape.

The Vision
The intention of the design was to further facilitate a connection with the outdoors and create a space for students and faculty alike to decompress between classes, study with peers, or take their lunch break. I found that a three-tiered deck with a linear rain garden beneath best enabled this vision. The changing elevation follows the natural terrain, limiting the need for much grading or reconstruction of the landscape and maintaining each existing tree. The rain garden will not only mitigate soil erosion but will also adhere to the studies of the students of the College of Environment and Design.

The Villages at Moss Lake Athens, GA
The Villages at Moss Lake
The Task The purpose of this project was to design a community for a client with specific taste and values for their ideal neighborhood. The site is proposed on a site off Jefferson Highway in Athens, Georgia. The design required a slew of sustainable components, including eight acres of farmland, six-hundred square feet of solar panels and a rain cistern for each house, plus a system of constructed wetlands that act as waste water treatment.

Before designing anything, particularly that of a sustainable nature, it’s imperative to analyze the existing conditions. After an insightful site visit, thorough research about the specifics of the region, and a detailed soil analysis, I discovered the locations most suitable for construction and noted areas of potential and other distinctive features such as open space, winter and summer winds, and surrounding land use.

SUITABLE FOR CONSTRUCTION
The sustainable, eight-resident eco-village is an ideal “floating community” that facilitates interaction and community engagement while also providing the residents with many options for a private getaway. The Villages at Moss Lake supports the client’s desires for heavy engagement within the boundaries of the site while feeling removed from the surrounding neighborhood. To best enable this vision, the design has dense vegetative screening in order to block the existing neighborhood. The layout of the village community both supports interaction and the client’s wishes of fully utilizing the site’s natural remedies. Each house has its own parking and front yard but the back opens into a shared community space. Less than one hundred yards away is a fenced-in dog park, an open reading room equipped with books and boardgames, a fire pit and picnic area, and a formal garden with a fountain and covered pergola. The remaining areas are preserved and dedicated to meandering hiking trails with a hidden gazebo and an open amphitheater that takes advantage of the picturesque views across the pond.
