Hey, Hi, Hello! Introduction

2016-2017

The artistic direction for this year’s TAGA publication is a conceptual celebration and deconstructed expression of printing.

We are working with a CMYK styled color pallet and range of typefaces. The typography is expressively modern and clean (using League Gothic and Univers), with a tone of classical typography (using Bembo Std). The colors are a direct nod to the modern 4 color printing process (specifically the one we will be using in-house). The materials we will be making are a “broken down” presentation of our printed work as well as a digital publication of the same materials. The book will be split into 3 (6in x 9in) books this year, 6 essays over 2 books as well as a 3rd book to encompass RIT TAGA’s history, process, members, and messages to our donors. There will be 2 major teams for designing this publication – a digital and print. Each print designer will be paired with a digital designer to work with on the same section. These two publications must match, and so the two members will be working on the same section but ensuring that the designs will match cross both media.

All these guidelines must be followed to ensure we meet our deadlines – but if you have a good idea on how to improve the initial designs, talk to us (Margaret & Ben)! We are super flexible if there is good reason for change, so let us know your thoughts.


First Things First The Basics We are working on 3 seperate books, as well as a digital book that combines all three. Our content has been given to us and already gone through the editing process. To keep everything consistent, please use the master pages we have provided & the styles (character and paragraph), but don’t change anything in these! Make sure all the colors you are using are the approved colors! Set up a swatch book in your files so you don’t have to try and estimate. We are using a CMYK color profile for print, RGB for digital. Make sure you know what profile you are using! When working with type, don’t leave widows or orphans. These make for bad rags and ruin the easy readability of the essays. Bodycopy, figures, graphs, and anything that involves text or images cannot bleed past the margins. If making a pullquote, use hanging quotes! If you don’t know how to do this, ask Ben or Margaret how to do this. Color blocks are allowed to bleed off the edge of the page and into the gutter.


So What Do We Have? Colors All colors must be in CMYK when used in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop. Neutral and universal colors must be present in every major design to offset a primary.

No more than one primary per page. One primary will be the dominant color per book. Hierarchy of color importance: • PRIMARY • NEUTRAL • UNIVERSAL All graphs will use the dominant primary and universal colors for information – other colors will be used as needed, but must be approved for hierarchy/information/any other reason for use.

An aside The Earth was small, light blue, and so touchingly alone, our home that must be defended like a holy relic. The Earth was absolutely round. I believe I never knew what the word round meant until I saw Earth from space. We have an infinite amount to learn both from nature and from each other Dinosaurs are extinct today because they lacked opposable thumbs and the brainpower to build a space program.


Even More Typography When using Bembo for text, use the oldstyle numbers that come with it! They’re gorgeous and dynamic. Use ligatures when you can. They create a more readable flow in the text. When using pull quotes, don’t use more than 4 columns of space. We want to ensure that the essay and infographic are the most important parts on the page. Keep footnotes in the same format as the text originally gives. Adhere to the style guide typography requirements, but do not change the information unless discussed and approved by Ben or Margaret. Allow for visual breathing room on the page. The content may be very text or graphic heavy and its best to leave resting space for the eye. Folios on pages should be the bottom outside corner in Bembo’s oldstyle numbers. Standard size as the body copy. Univers and Bembo Std can be found on the Universal Type Client (UTC) League Gothic Regular must be downloaded from Adobe Typekit.

Images All images must be resized and colored in Adobe Photoshop and saved as .tiff files. All vectors must be made in Adobe Illustrator and as .eps files with transparent backgrounds. All images will be placed in the book in Adobe InDesign. For the print book, images must be used at 300dpi, CMYK color, and at 100% size, but no larger than a 2in x 4in box. Images from the same section must all be at the same size. Images may not take up more than 1/3rd of a page. Images must be on the same page they are being discussed. Images cannot be duplicated onto another section unless called for in the text as a comparison to another image. Images must be properly named as: author_page_imagenumber All graphicly created images must adhere to color scheme for this year.


Document Set Up Document must be 36p0 picas wide, aka 6 inches. Document must be 54p0 picas tall, aka 9 inches. Always start your document on the second page to ensure that you can work with a spread. We are working off a 6 column grid.You are not required to use all 6 columns for text at the same time, but consider the useage of space vs any images you may need to include. Ensure your gutter is 0p8 picas. Margins must be 3p0 picas, aka .25 inches, all the way around the document. Bleeds should be 1p0 picas, .16 inches, all the way around the document.
