Motivation letter / ERASMUS+ FOR TRAINEESHIP A.A. 2017/2018.

To Whom it may concern, I would like to start this motivation letter with my name: Margherita Pasquali. I am currently attending the fifth year of Architecture at the Polytecnic of Milan. I would truly welcome the possibility of attending the ERASMUS+ FOR TRAINEESHIP A.A. 2017/2018. Since the start of my educational itinerary, I have always been interested in the relationship between nature and architecture, nature and metropolis, and between natural materials and architectural context. In order to investigate these relationships I have always been interested in the metamorphosis of the metropolis and how the natural element is integrated with the architecture. This was the principal reason behind my decision to attend the Master course in Architecture. This selection has given me the opportunity to work on different projects of urban development, landscape and architecture; to attend courses of urban sociology, landscape, Critque of Art and Architecture. More than any other course, this Master is allowing me to experience teamwork with students from all over the world and with different backgrounds; I am always eager to expand my knowledge and welcome the possibility to compare points of view with others. In addition, throughout my academic career I have always worked. Since the second year of the bachelor I have been working with “Pasquali Giaume Architetti Associati” bureau, I worked for architect Cecilia Lurani and I did my internship at “GDMP” bureau in Milan (where I learnt the importance of looking for details, materials and textures related to the natural context and how to use them in the architectural project ). I am currently working with Paola Iacucci Atelier on an Urban Project for a future publication and I will be working with the professor Antonella Contin on digital mapping. These experiences have allowed me to apply those concepts that I have learnt in university to actual architectural projects. More importantly, working has allowed me to understand that there are other skills necessary to be able to work well. Skills like time management, precision, working under pressure are no longer novel to me. After several workshops abroad (as can be seen in the CV ) I have decided that the time has come to be able to work abroad for an extended period. The Erasmus+trainership programme will allow me to put together the skillset that I have developed so far and put it to good use. Living and working abroad will permit me to further explore the different ways of team working, the different cultural approaches to architecture and at the same time being completely out of my comfort zone. In return I offer my enthusiasm, academic background and previous work experience. I am young, eager to learn and I am sure that I would be an added value to the dynamics and environment that this Erasmus opportunity has to offer. I attach my CV and Portfolio. lation “the movement of the bee”. At this level it will be possible to observe the free and continuous movement of bees, into the intermittences of the architectural element. After having observed the free movement of the bees, the visitor will be ready to access the third level, in which he will be able to experience the free and continuous movement in the space.

The exhibition is an itinerary developed on three levels.

The final level of the exhibition will reproduce different rhythms, such as the noise of the bees working, so the visitor will be attracted to move from one to an other “intermittence” freely.

The visitor, from the street level, enters at the first level of the exhibition and of the architectural element “the movement of the man”. Walking through a suspended grid of boardwalks, the visitor can partially choose which direction he would like to move in. The installation will stop his walk path just as a traffic light, houses, fences would do in reality. Going downstairs the visitor will reach the second level of the instal-

Level 1/ Man Movement

The first level is characterized by an open cubes, made on steel profiles laminated in red. At this level the itinerary of the visitor will be stopped and devieted following the directions dectated by the open cubes. As man in everyday life, by cars and traffic ligh.

Level 2/ Bees Movement

The open cube, now is changed into a cage of smaller cubes. Into this cage, bordered by glass, the noise and the motion of working’s bees is reproduced by moving little balls. Here the visitor can look at the constant motion of bees.

Level 1/ Man and Bees

The final level is characterized by an physical cubes, made on steel laminated surfaces in red. Inside the cubes a kinetic system is making a wall of little balls moving. The visitor can move from one to an onther listening to the different frequencies of men, bees, bees and man.

Concept/ Unopened Agorà Abstract / If , in Greek times the square was the cultural and social center of the whole polis, today Agorà wants to open its doors to all citizens. The square, in one part , takes on the likeness of the shell of the former Cinema Adriano: and in the other, the project elements are inserteds. The new elements are nothing more than boxes opening onto the square, commissioned by ceCINEpas : like the cinema-theater, the center of the project; the entrance to the cinema and exhibition space, the bistro, the archive of screenplays and the co- working space . During the day, natural light, entering from the original openings and the “sail”, redraws the existing shell and the square; at night the project and “sail” become illuminating elements for Agora ‘ . ± 12:00 +0.14 5 +0.14 5

The free area, which opens onto the urban area, is here recreated in the former Cinema Adriano thus changing its sky, with a unopened sky.
The square in ancient Greece was surrounded by different activities: cultural, political, social and commercial; while Agorà today interacts with art, cinema, theater and music.
The design idea is to recreate two distinct nuclei that are in communication with each other.

Concept/ Adaptive margin technological development Abstract / This building technology studio worked on the structural and executive development of the project that was developed in NYC at NYInstitute of Technology. We started working on an urban scale in the Red Hook district by devoloping a new waterfront and the cultural programme that concluded with the project of the museum. During the studio we developed the waterfront system and the museum by drawing and studying the structural details.

Concept/ Waterfront perspective

The waterfront was designed with a system of reticular beams that allowed a suspended walkway along the waterfront, reaching the detail of 1:20 The Museum was also defined with the same approach , from the design phase 1:200 to the executive phase 1:20.

Concept/ Networking twin towns Abstract / Starting from an analytical work based on the parallel development in Badolato Superiore and Badolato Marina of the building typologies DA O DBLOAALDTAOT LOA T O and public spacesB AB(from 1850 to contemporary times) the whole design strategy primarily focuses on one of the main problems of this huge territory: the lack of unity and homogeneity between parts, which consequently lead to a detachment of them all, forming a system in which the main parts don’t work together. For both towns the strategy is to improve connections, developing an homogenous system; which 1850 1947 1947 1947 for the newer Badolato Marina1850 is1850 firstly based on the division in four main districts, all directly connected to the waterfront: four main paths, all starting from a point which is the landmark public space for that proper district, and ending on a pier on the beach. From the first district, ‘’South Marina’’ to the last one ‘’Foreign Village’’, we reorganized the landmark public spaces in order to give inhabitants a reference place in all parts of town, giving a new quality to a town which has no specific identity. Moreover it will be possible for them to go across the whole town arriving to the waterfront through a direct pedestrian path, crossing the huge green territory, marked by a B AB DA O DBLOAALDTAOT LOMA A M TO RAI RNMIAN AA RINA series of pavilions providing different public services. are not limited at the urban scale, but they also link the territory: so with a system of pedestrian and bicycle paths, it will also be possible to directly go to Badolato Superiore, crossing the territory and all its viewpoints. On the other hand for the upper town, maintaining the same strategy of network, the main issue was quite different. The shrinkage of this town will continue to be an issue in the years to come. Therfore, our study explores how to promote an increase in the population density of Babolato Superiore. The aim is to give the opportunity to possible investors to come to Badolato Superiore and see 1953 1953 19601960 1990 19901990 its1953 potential, in order to give1960 it a new system of inhabitants therefore improving its economy. In view of this, we provided diffused accomodations sprawled throughout the town, using abandoned buildings and ruined ones. With an individualized design strategy for each, with the intention of preserving their rural identity. We also provided a network in which every accommodation unit is connected to the main road. Furthermore, a series of public spaces is designed to improve this connection system, giving new spatial qualities and functions to existing medieval places. Also in this context the topic of landmark buildings remains central, four existing buildings along the main road have been renewed to become part of a wholistic touristic system. 1901

Concept/ Produ(A)ctive district Abstract / Our work on “Produ(A)ctive district” starts from existing development analysis. The new buildings on the area are based on the idea of the circular economy (CE) and are multifunctional. Municipality doesn’t have a clear strategy for each zone. We included spare zones in our CE project as a possibility to develop a productive district. By enlarging the strategic area, we create land-use based economy and intensive production. Wide space along the Johan van Hasseltkanaal used for placing sourcing production for the new system. It is based on growing plants in order to give the materials to the new artisans in the district, gardens and orchards provide food. The system of new plantations is regulated by supporting biodiversity corridor along the canal. It connects water transitional eco system with existing urban fringe. The CE that we propose on this site starts with described sourcing and continues with manufacture, which includes processes from treatment base materials to the local production in wooden laboratories, arts and crafts, multifunctional workshops located on a main site given by the brief. The part of distribution is based on existing connections on the area and on planned by municipality. Different storages for

Concept/ Axonometry site 1:500

materials and production sites are available by roads and new water connections. The new inhabitants are meant to use and participate in the CE. We provide new accommodation for them, new services and facilities, major part of which is connected to our CE. The main production process can be described as a part of this circle. Starting from planting sources, coming ingathering. Then treating and storing materials before final production and selling. Leftovers are transformed into compost and help to support fertility of the soil on production lands. Korte Papaverweg became the main axis of the system. In order to increase the quality of connection, we renew existing paths, create connection between Veldbiesstraat and Papaverhoek, bringing new cycle routes. This network connects new public spaces. Besides the main plot, we provide three buildings, functions of which are related to described CE. One part of the main building is allocated to research laboratories, co-workings and workshops. Another one is housing for new inhabitants. Buildings functions are recognizable by use of different languages for façade. The interesting part of housing is “rotating” plans and supporting green elements as extended “green houses”.

Concept/ Project description Abstract / GDMP bureau “gdmp-studio” composed of Giovanni Drugman and Michele Pizzinato and is located in via Legnano 28 in Milan. Since 1993 the bureau deals with logistics buildings, attic shelters, churches and parish complexes, telephone exchanges, car dealerships, interior architecture, design, self-construction, public spaces, rural architecture and recovery, cemeteries, exhibition stands, residential settlements, restaurants, protected housing, fairs, offices. The complexity of the profession requires the project activity to be justified and coherent on the semantic level but also a precise control of the consequences on the administrative, technical, construction, energy, plant, chronological, environmental, accident prevention, economic and ethical levels.

Concept/ Plan and Section 1:100

Abstract /Castiglioncello a mare The architect Giovanni Drugman start looking at the natural context in which the villa is Located. Along the tuscany coast, close to the Maremma’s forestry and stones, it is unvoidable to look at the natural textures that surround the house. The project consists of a renovation of the garden, a small pavilion and the construction of the swimming pool. During my internshpi I had the chance to follow Giovanni during the project and to take care of the drawing of the project, of the importance of the materiality , of the detail of the pavilion. I decided to point out in my portfolio the renew of the paving and the swimming pool , bucouse here the research of the material and the relationship with the natural context is gracefully expressed.

Abstract /Repower Garden The new green space Repower is not a hanging garden: it is a space with its own specific identity that can support and nourish at the same time the marketing connotations of the Repower brand. The green heart does not coincide with plants; on the contrary, it expresses a soul, a way of being, the ability to improve and impose itself as the example of a reality that wants to be visionary and at the same time concrete with its own clean and efficient and responsible energy. The green Repower embodies a share economy able to fuse resources, knowledge and skills. It wants to be viral because it is ordinarily outside the conventional, a garden capable of communicating normal elements connoting them as extraordinary; a magic that puts Repower as a leader also in the way of setting up a Hanging Garden.
