Integrity: Why It Matters/page 1

[Title] Integrity: Why It Matters [Kicker] Integrity is more than a virtue—it’s a way of life. Great rewards can be reaped as we stick to our principles, even when it seems unpopular or inconvenient. [Highlights of the source article] Doing the right thing wasn’t meant to always be easy, and yes—sometimes it may seem “uncool” or difficult. But never fear: one will never regret the decision to be honest, and the effects of integrity spread farther than you might think, according to Brigham Young University professor W. Steve Albrecht. In his November 2014 essay entitled “Why the Lack of Integrity Burdens Society,” [http://wheatley.byu.edu/fellow_notes/individual.cfm?id=27] Albrecht discusses the necessity of integrity and its role (or lack thereof) in our society today. Integrity [https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1990/04/personal-integrity?lang=eng] is more than “being true to what you believe.” Instead, it is “believing and doing what is true,” Albrecht says. Consider the example of RC Willey, an American furniture chain that demonstrated unfailing devotion to its principles. Several decades ago, a warranty company declared bankruptcy shortly after RC Willey had paid a large sum of money for its services, but RC Willey backed all of the warranties—even though the company was under no such legal obligation to do so. In spite of the economic inconvenience, RC Willey continued to thrive. The sacrifice to practice integrity may have been great, but the blessings that accompanied the decision were perhaps far greater. Stories such as that of RC Willey make it clear: learning integrity is vital to both our homes and any organization. Integrity improves unity and can even reap economical benefits. Though dishonesty may be tempting in the moment, Albrecht reminds us that such shortcuts ultimately spell trouble down the road. The influence of integrity is profound; the blessings are immense. But the choice is yours: “Integrity cannot be forced; it must be self-absorbed.” [Link to the source article] Read “Why the Lack of Integrity Burdens Society” [http://wheatley.byu.edu/fellow_notes/individual.cfm?id=27] and learn why integrity matters.
