A Relic Restored A treasured gem, the Provo Tabernacle bears close ties to BYU’s history and the surrounding community. Built over 15 years, this iconic structure welcomed world-class musicians in the mid-1900s, including violinist Fritz Kreisler and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. It also became the stage for BYU commencement ceremonies through the 1990s. “It was a symbol of the industriousness of the pioneer Saints . . . a place for education and the performing arts, as well as a sacred space,” says BYU piano performance professor Robin Hancock. Though ravaged by a fire in December 2011, this landmark will find new purpose as the Provo City Center Temple, set to be dedicated in March 2016. ––Margaret Willden
