Color and Space

A research study on the relevance of color and space. Color designations were made to some of Miami’s neighborhoods, with the purpose of showcasing the similarities between the vernacular of any given place and color hues found within such. This approach may be applied to the context of other cities. The aim would be to use these findings to create an architecture of identity. In doing so, we as architects, would be able to blend individuality with architecture.

In doing so, we would further understand how our subconscious mind plays an important role in how we experience space. This is due to the emotions and thoughts that are triggered through color. The purpose is to make color designation an active element when designing space, rather than a selection made towards the end of a project. Setting emphasis on what some may consider an insignificant element, can allow for a forward thinking proposition when designing through color.

Bright Orange Stage

A collaborative installation for Art Basel, designed to promote the development of the public realm in Miami. The open-air structure, composed of 1001 PVC pipes, creates a sense of place with an elevated stage, made to host a variety of free interactive performances including live music, poetry readings, comedy, and more.

The pipes were purposely arranged to increase in precise mathematical increments from the edges to the center of the square platform to form an empty triangular space for performances. Thus, creating a forced perspective the focuses the attention of the spectators on the performers, while heightening the visual experience for all.

This stage was a winner of the Public Space Challenge and published on a variety of well-known architectural platforms.

Micro Housing

An urban block incision meant to create affordable housing for the younger demographic. Its peculiar layout was intended to create an open and inclusive approach, encouraging engagement within the community. Coconut Grove is well known for its native flora pervading its communities, the architectural historic pieces found throughout, but mainly for its locals who have witnessed its evolution. A notable element to Coconut Grove is its seamless transitions from the suburbs of Coral Gables to the robust movement of Brickell.

The possibility to maximize the site without compromising outdoor space was a factor highlighted throughout the design process. This low rise was designed to harmonize with its surrounding context and set precedence for future development. The layout of a typical floor plate was created to maximize sunlight and welcome a passerby to experience the structure. At the core of each floor plate, public space was granted to create a sense of community and provide spaces for professional development. The notions implemented in this development, can easily be abstracted for other architectural developments.

Unboxing New York

New York sets the stage for experimental studies that later become precedents for other cities. The project analyzed one block within Midtown and proposed elevating a ‘New York block’. This would culminate an elevated notion of public versus private. When opening the ground floor level of such block, we would create alcoves for New York’s vibrant street culture.

When multiple buildings of one block are taken into consideration, it creates an interconnection between such and propose many programatic possibilities. This concept is not limited to one block within the Midtown limits. If adapted properly, these interconnected buildings could in turn span the public air space over the streets, and creating a new real estate for existing conditions. This project depicts the possibilities for future development through the creation of a new topology that monetizes horizontal real estate.

Brutal World

A classification of what defines Brutalism, inspired by studies of Boston’s brutalist architecture studied by Mark Pasnik. This brochure captures the history of important architectural structures and elements that prevail in such structures that can help in identifying brutality structures found anywhere around the world. The goal of this research is to bring light to these mid 20th century structures and prevent their demolition. By having individuals understand the purpose and functionality of this architectural style, we would build on the connection that lacks between this style and the communities that they are found in.

This pamphlet also captures a one on one conversation I conducted with Hilario Candela. An architect who pioneered the architectural style within Miami’s metropolitan area. His most famous and controversial structure being the Miami Marine Stadium. When asking H.Candela how brutalist structures are able to speak to their surrounding context he stated, “integrating the human experience into the design and assuming that someone will only experience the space once”, a concept that can also be applied in the reinterpretation of how we experience brutalist structures.

Our

Collaged Thoughts

A series of collaged thoughts meant to instill a sense of Marissa in all of my work. What was once a break in between architectural school projects, turned into a hobby that has become a way I like to perceive my thoughts. You may have also noticed that this surrealist way of thinking, is a strong element when I present my architectural work.

While in school, a professor advised me to avoid placing my name on my work, as my work should speak for itself. I like to think that this artistic style, is a way for a reader to distinguish my work from others and allow for a unique appreciation of my architectural perspective.

Collages speak louder than words in my world. It is a casual effort to allow for free flowing thoughts to make it on paper. The intention is for every viewer to create their own concoction of ideas that they find relevant to each piece.

Vernacular Series

Capturing still moments through a lens has been a hobby of mine since 2011. It is through these moments that I became fond of the field of architecture and the vernacularity that different cities have in creating a form of identity. As someone who strives to heighten identity within the field, this has become an important factor for me, when capturing a place and a moment in time.

This series is dedicated to the first place that saw me grow professionally after my undergraduate studies, Falmouth. A small town in the coast of Cape Cod that drew me closer to myself and the sense of creating homes. The architecture found in the neighborhoods of Cape Cod, Massachusetts offer a sense of timeless comfort.

Stippled Acrylics

A series of playful and rhythmic interpretations of space and color. This interplay of elements has become a quick study when interpreting how an individual may make use of a space. It is through studies like this, that I build my strong ties with color and the playfulness and harmony that results from combining different hues.

My work is meant to harmonize the arts with architecture and showcase the importance that this interconnectivity has when creating spaces of integrity and identity. Through my nonprofit, Manos de Mar, I have been able to be involved with small communities of Latin America in hopes of making this harmony of fields, accessible to the younger demographic who may not have the resources to explore such notions.
