Qetaifan Island North By Sarah Palmer It has already been a big year for one of Qatar's largest and most ambitious projects, with a number of awards and contracts signed.

W

ho wouldn't like to live on an exclusive island, with the latest smart technology in exclusive villas and apartments while enjoying comfort and relaxation?

Located at Qatar's new Lusail City, Qetaifan Island North is an eco-friendly, luxurious choice for families to enjoy quality time together. The island is the first and main project of developer Qetaifan Projects, a limited liability real estate development company founded in October 2017 and fully owned by Katara Hospitality, a leading global hotel owner, developer and operator based in Qatar. The aim of Qetaifan Projects is to support the country's long-term economic vision by building cities with sustainable and intelligent infrastructure. Qetaifan Island North is a unique project spanning approximately 1.3 mn sq m with 830,000 sq m of vibrant attractions and entertainment facilities. It will feature seven beaches, making the island an important part of Lusail City's distinct waterfront. One of the main attractions is a state-of-the-art waterpark, with rides inspired by Qatari culture

and complementing the theme of the oil and gas industry. The Icon Tower is the highest of its kind, reaching 80 m, and is on a smaller, adjacent island and linked by a bridge and approached by a train. Luxury hotels will surround the island with all the usual high-end facilities that will allow visitors to fully appreciate and immerse themselves in the view and comfort on offer. For the residential community, beachfront villas and well-appointed apartments will be available, and amenities will include a school, medical centre and mosque. The sales launch of the first phase of mixed use and residential plots began in late 2019. HE Sheikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Managing Director of Qetaifan Projects and Vice Chairman of Katara Hospitality, commented at the launch, saying: 'We are fortunate to be working on one of the most honorable national projects which in turn aims to serve various sectors of the country such as tourism and real estate development, which will contribute effectively to Qatar National Vision 2030, especially as the country is witnessing a remarkable development in all sectors in the light of the 2022 World Cup preparations. There is no doubt that the freehold law allowing ownership for non-Qataris on Qetaifan Island North will contribute to increasing

opportunities for foreign investment in the real estate sector.' Hotel guests, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a number of retail services, including a retail plaza and souq. The latter will overlook Linear Park, the main artery of the island and which will link all the various zones together. Running through the park will be an artificial Salt Canal, linked to the sea, for activities such as fishing and boating. Watersports can be also found at the familyfriendly Beach Club, which is the proposed first element to be completed on the island. Visitors will have access to a clubhouse, a beach and infinity pool, and a restaurant, gym and spa. Activities are not restricted to the water though, as the island will have ample boardwalks and lush gardens and lawns to stroll along, as well as tennis courts. Phase one of the Qetaifan Island North project is planned for completion by November 2021.

Recent news from the island In June, Qetaifan Island North was named as the winner of The Best Luxury Real Estate in Doha, Qatar by Luxury Lifestyle Awards. Luxury Lifestyle Awards is a global award selecting, recognising, celebrating and promoting the best luxury goods and services. Speaking about the award, HE Sheikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said, 'We are honoured to be recognised by the respected experts of Luxury Lifestyle Awards. We are working hard to make Qetaifan Island North an attractive destination for the discerning tourists worldwide, and we believe in the successful future of this project.'

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Qetaifan Projects and ADMARES Construction and Trading in July for the construction and operation of a number of floating hotels on the shores of Qetaifan Island North. These hotels will provide accommodation for the fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM and will have a specific, unique design, with guest rooms, a restaurant, and a lounge bar. All of the four-storey hotels will be identical. This will be the first time floating hotels have been used as a temporary means of accommodation on this scale. The buildings have been designed by award-winning Finnish architect firm, Sigge Architects, and adhere to strict sustainable solutions with minimum ecological impact. Thinking of working for Qetaifan Projects? Well, good news – Qetaifan Projects has recently been recognised as one of the best places to work in Qatar by Best Places to Work, an HR programme that certifies and recognises leading workplaces in countries around the world. Infrastructure in Qatar Lusail City Stadium

Qatar National Vision As arguably the world’s fastest‑growing economy, Qatar recognises the importance of diversification and sustainability. It also acknowledges the inherent challenges of a rapidly‑increasing population, further industrialisation, and the resultant need for an ever-expanding infrastructure. To confront and manage those challenges in an effective manner, an ambitious and far‑sighted policy document, Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030, was first published in 2008. Based on the guiding principles of the Permanent Constitution, it defined the nation’s medium‑to‑long-term objectives and created a framework for sustainable national strategies. QNV 2030 rests on four pillars – Human, Social, Economic and Environmental Development – each with clearly defined individual long‑term outcomes yet important inter‑relationships. Qatar’s human capital is recognised as its greatest asset. QNV 2030 stresses the important roles of education, health and sport in expanding the opportunities and capabilities of all the people of Qatar, enabling them to develop and sustain a prosperous knowledge‑driven society. Under QNV 2030, all new projects should provide a high standard of living for future generations, with investments in education and research, healthcare, transport and industry. This will enable Qatar to sustain its own development by 2030. There are plans for a bold new future with the construction of an integrated transport system, a major overhaul of roads and highways, drainage and sewage, and the renovation of downtown Doha. The first wave of specific actions and targets in the next chapter of Qatar’s transformation were defined in the Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS) 2011–2016. NDS 2017–2022 was released in December 2017 by HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, the previous Prime Minister

and Minister of Interior, and has been prepared by the Planning and Statistics Authority and other entities. The strategy includes aspects related to 2022, continued implementation of QNV 2030, economical performance and future prospects. The strategy also includes institutional development, providing services and financial management, strengthening human development, proper social development, sustainable development that preserves the environment, and managing strategic performance.

Economic Strategy Qatar’s Economic Development plans aim to create and sustain a competitive and diversified economy capable of meeting the needs of, and securing a high standard of living for, its population now and in the future. According to the International Monetary Fund in their Regional Economic Outlook Update: Middle East and Central Asia in April 2020, 'Countries with fiscal buffers such as Qatar are better placed to accommodate rising deficits than those with limited space'. Two new laws introduced in 2018, regarding tenders and public finance, are part of a plan to monitor public expenditures, improving efficiency and enforcing better management of investment spending. Infrastructural spending is being further boosted in advance of Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM, an event expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors and to increase tourism both before and after the event. The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs indicates that the demand for workers has been rising ever since Qatar’s bid victory in 2010. The state budget for 2020 shows a total expenditure of QAR210.5 bn, with major projects again being allocated 43% (QAR90 bn), in key sectors such as healthcare, education and transport. New projects worth QAR11.5 bn will ©

be awarded in 2020, mainly towards major infrastructure projects such as roads and sewage networks undertaken by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal). Qatar’s economy has historically been significantly boosted by growth in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industries. However the government is taking steps to diversify economic development elsewhere, especially in view of lower oil prices. Education, sports, medical and cultural tourism are being developed and Qatar is emerging as a major player in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market.

Conferences and Exhibitions An influential player in the region’s MICE market, Qatar opened its first major facility in 2011. The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) and located in Education City, is an iconic venue in terms of design and green technology. QNCC is one of the largest, most technologically advanced venues in the Middle East, employing environmental and sustainability best practices including LEED gold certification. Designed by Arata Isozaki, the award-winning venue features a 3D representation of the Sidra tree, symbol of QF. The 200,000 sq m venue has a 40,000 sq m exhibition space, a conference hall for 3,800 delegates, a 2,300-seat theatre, multipurpose halls, auditoriums, meeting rooms, lounges and suites. qncc.qa The Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) opened its doors in 2015. The building sits on a 47,700 sq m site, and includes a state-of-the-art exhibition hall, modular wall system, high-tech meeting and conference rooms, a VIP hosting suite and a vast underground parking system. Located in Al Dafna, Qatar’s commercial district, the venue has five exhibition halls, which can be used as one exhibition hall totaling 29,000 sq m, thanks to a unique wall partition system. The 18-metre high ceiling is the highest in the Middle East and is supported by a revolutionary cantilever roof meaning the whole space is pillar-free and more versatile than many other exhibition halls. decc.qa Annual business conferences and exhibitions include: Project Qatar, the trade construction, building, environmental technology and materials exhibition; QITCOM, the ICT-industry expo; Cityscape Qatar, one of the region's largest real estate events; and MEED Qatar Projects. Qatar has also hosted the Arab Future Cities Summit, the Green Building Expo, and the World Stadium Congress, as well as trade summits and conferences.

Spectacular Buildings Dramatic changes to Doha’s skyline seem to occur in the blink of an eye. Exotically sculpted glass and concrete towers, built with materials imported from all over the world, reach skywards in many areas of the city. A forest of skyscrapers has created a mini-Manhattan skyline on the capital’s northern shore, each new design complementing and contrasting with its neighbour. The population has increased from nearly 1.7 mn people in 2010 to just under 2.8 mn in June 2020, mainly living in and around Doha. Just 50 years ago the 20,000 population of Doha lived and worked in single or two-storey structures bordering the narrow streets of what was just a small town on the southern shore of Doha Bay. In the 1970s, as the country changed from fishing and pearl diving to oil production and export, the decision was taken to reshape Doha Bay, extend the waterfront and expand the town area by reclaiming land. The area now known as Al Dafna (or ‘West Bay’) was dredged from the sea and the first building was the pyramidal Sheraton hotel – an iconic structure at the time and one which is now dwarfed by the plethora of other hotels, office towers and apartment blocks nearby. As the demand for prime town centre real estate has grown, and the population seeks ever-more luxurious living and working environments, the city has been forced upwards. Old Doha’s traditional inward-looking, small-windowed, courtyard dwellings have been replaced by multi-storey office, residential, and mixed-use blocks as building technology has developed. The old stone houses of the 19th century – cooled naturally or with the help of a wind tower and vented walls – reflected the limitations of building materials and affordable or available technology at the time. The huge glass walls on many of the new edifices reflect global developments in glass technology and energy-efficient, eco-friendly air conditioning as Qatar dedicates itself to ‘green’ building.

Developments to Infrastructure The State Budget for 2020 has again been based on an oil price of USD55 a barrel, and is forecast to achieve a QAR500 mn surplus. Revenue is again estimated at QAR211 bn, and spending at QAR210.5 bn. Expenditure is the highest in the past five fiscal years, as the country is committed to completing numerous development projects across multiple sectors, including those related to National Development Strategy 2018–2022. The biggest expenditure, to infrastructure, is for development of highways and internal roads, expansion of the existing road system, water and electricity networks, sewerage networks, and other public utilities. The main infrastructure projects under construction include the relaunch of the previously-shelved Sharq Crossing Project, linking Ras Bu Abboud and West Bay, which is expected to be completed within four years. The allocation for the healthcare sector is QAR22.6 bn, 11% of total expenditure in 2020, for major projects to improve healthcare services including expansion of Hamad Medical Corporation facilities and the establishment of new healthcare centres. The education sector is allocated QAR22.1 bn (10.5%), for expansion of schools and other educational facilities. The budget again provides for the five-year, QAR12.0 bn land development scheme for Qataris, to include water and electricity networks, sewerage, roads and other infrastructure. The new public-private partnership (PPP) law, approved by the Cabinet in April 2019, is anticipated to be used to support projects connected to Qatar National Vision 2030 and the FIFA 2022 World Cup QatarTM. The PPPs will be used for a variety of sectors, including healthcare, education, sports, real estate and public infrastructure.

Public Works Authority ashghal.gov.qa The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) was established in 2004 for the planning, design, procurement, construction, delivery, and asset management of all infrastructure projects and public buildings in Qatar. Various departments oversee roads and highways, drainage networks, and public buildings such as hospitals and schools. Key projects include the Expressway Programme, roads and drainage under the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme, and the Inner Doha Re-sewerage Implementation Strategy (IDRIS). Ashghal launched its Corporate Strategy 2018– 2022 under the authority's new vision ‘Excellence in delivering and managing efficient sustainable

infrastructure’. Under the strategy, Ashghal aims to be more self-reliant, and has set 10 objectives to accomplish its mission of ‘continuously enhancing customer satisfaction through leading project and asset management services and solutions’. The 'Qualification of Small-Scale Contractors' initiative was launched in December 2018 to support Qatari companies and encourage them to participate in road projects, providing training and assistance with project implementation. The third phase was implemented in late 2019, and to date Ashghal has contributed to the development and support of local companies through 12 projects to improve roads. Projects are also being implemented under the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places. This is for the development of several major roads, pedestrian and cycle paths, and landscaping, to include parks. More than 15,000 trees and shrubs have already been planted under the G Ring Road Development Project, and 30,000 on Al Khor Road. Numerous expressway projects have brought great benefits to navigating around the country. The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route has been renamed as Al Majd Road: Road 2 links Mesaieed Industrial City with Lusail City, while Road 4 links Mall of Qatar with Ras Laffan. The superhighway Dukhan Road is nearing completion, while the B Ring Road development project is well underway. Overall, Ashghal aims to complete 1,543 km of road works, 2,000 km of footpaths and 1,028 km of bicycle tracks between 2018 and 2022. Much of this is under the second phase of the National Strategy for Traffic Safety (2018–2022). Under the first phase (2013–2017), the road network tripled. Under the Citizens Residences Development, 33 infrastructure projects are being implemented at a cost of QAR13.7 bn, to provide 30,000 residential plots in a number of areas: Al Wukair North, Al Mashaf, west of Abu Hamour/Ain Khaled, south of Al Shaihaniya, west of Umm Slal Ali, Rawdat Egdaim and Izghawa, west of Al Khor/Al Egda, west and south of Simaisma, Al Wukair South and Rawdat Al Jihaniya. In July 2020, Ashghal signed nine new contracts with Qatari companies, worth QAR3.6 bn, with work to commence in Q3 2020. The Refurbishment and Upgrading Works for Four Sewage Pumping Stations Project aims to provide sustainable solutions for improving the country’s sewage networks, with pumping stations in four vital areas within Doha. Ashghal is using 'Made in Qatar' materials for this project to support local manufacturers. ©

The Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects began in May 2018 and will include a pumping station operating at 19.7 cu m per second, pumping water from Mesaimeer Tunnel to the new outfall tunnel. The project will provide a sustainable solution to discharge surface and storm water and cost around QAR920 mn. It is scheduled to be completed in Q4 2021 and is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Tunnel Project. As at June 2020, 50% of excavation works on the 10 km long outfall tunnel has been completed. In January 2020, Ministerial Resolution No 211 of 2019 on Setting the Fees for the Services Provided by the Public Works Authority was issued. The services provided are under three categories: connecting to networks, usage of the networks, and providing permits for services related to the operation and maintenance of both drainage and roads networks. A full list of charges can be found on their website.

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation km.com.qa The corporation, known as Kahramaa, was established in 2000 under the Ministry of Energy and Industry to regulate and maintain the supply of electricity and water to its customers. Kahramaa transferred ownership of its stations to Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) in 2002. In November 2018 HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, assumed responsibility for Kahramaa as part of his remit to oversee the regular and sustainable supply of energy, power and water for domestic purposes. An ambitious strategic plan for projects began in 2014. The first 'transformation' phase ended in 2018; the second phase started in 2019 and will end in 2023. Overall, Kahramaa plans to invest QAR38 bn in projects to meet the increasing demands made to the electricity and water supply, with a further QAR6 bn after 2022. The commissioning of five mega water reservoirs to be online by 2026 will provide storage for 2,300 mn gallons a day of water. One, the Umm Al Houl Power Plant, currently pumps 136 mn gallons of water a day. The power generation phase will produce 2,520 megawatts of electricity. The plant will add around 30% water and 25% electricity of local demand once fully completed. Kahramaa now installs smart electricity meters in all new buildings and is replacing old ones – all meters will be smart by the end of 2020. These meters digitally send readings to the energy supplier to ensure more accurate energy bills. They E-GUIDE © QATAR INFRASTRUCTURE E-GIUDE

also help the customer better understand their energy usage and is part of the Tarsheed initiative to rationalise consumption of water and electricity. The use of about 1,000 smart digital devices to detect leakages in 10 places on the water distribution network has enabled savings of QAR6.42 mn, or 1.4 mn cubic feet of water. The first remotely-operated smart power substation opened at Barwa Village in September 2018. It is connected to the main control room enabling it to be monitored and shut down quickly in the case of an emergency without human intervention.

Selected Megaprojects in Qatar Qatar is undertaking a number of megaprojects to satisfy QNV 2030, as well as the much talked about football event. All this construction is good news for both local and international businesses. These include projects with Qatar Rail, Qatar Free Zones Authority, the North Field Expansion project under Qatar Petroleum, and the proposed expansion of Hamad International Airport. Construction projects both planned and underway include upgrades to infrastructure, as well as projects in all of the country's main sectors, from health to oil and gas and education. Here are just a few of the biggest projects currently underway:

The 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM sc.qa No list would be complete without mentioning the enormity of the proposed sporting event coming to Qatar. With the ongoing scrutiny over the State being awarded the rights to host the competition, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) continues to issue assurances that the country's preparations are on track. Previously known as the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, SC has signed stakeholder agreements with Qatar Rail, Ashghal, Kahramaa, Aspire Zone Federation and Qatari Diar, for projects to deliver the infrastructure for the event. The Workers’ Welfare regularly interacts with SC workers and a dedicated hotline was established in 2017 to deal with grievances. SC's Workers Welfare Standards exceed Qatar’s laws in an attempt to ensure fair recruitment policies, payment terms, overtime provisions and accommodation standards. All contracted workers are registered with an integrated electronic medical records system and undergo medical screening by Qatar Red Crescent funded by SC. The Official Emblem was unveiled in Doha on 2 September 2019 at 20:22 local time, with the synchronised projection of the emblem onto a number of prominent buildings.

• Al Rayyan Stadium: features an undulating façade and sand dune-shaped structures, using environmentally friendly building materials and practices, with a renewable energy generation system on site. The proposed venue up to the quarter-finals will be the new home of Qatar Stars League football team Al Rayyan Club, and nearly half of the 40,000 modular seats will be donated overseas.

Msheireb Metro Station

Many of the eight proposed host venues are completed or nearing completion. The new stadiums have been designed by the world's leading architects and reflect a different aspect of Qatari culture, and take into consideration three priorities: access and comfort, sustainability, and post-tournament legacy. Fans can potentially see more than one match a day, as the longest distance between venues is just 55 km. • Khalifa International Stadium: originally built in 1976, the stadium was reopened in May 2017 following its renovation. • Al Janoub Stadium: the Al Wakra stadium opened in May 2019 for the final of the Amir's Cup. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid and inspired by traditional dhow boats, the 40,000‑seater venue will host matches up to the quarter-finals. After the competition it will become the home of Al Wakra Sports Club with 20,000 seats, with the remainder donated to football development projects overseas. • Education City Stadium: the 40,000-seat venue will host fixtures up to the quarter-finals, and in legacy mode the stadium will become a sports, leisure and social hub for students and local sports clubs. Half the seats will be donated to stadiums around the world. The stadium was officially completed on 15 June 2020. • Al Bayt Stadium: a 60,000 seater-stadium which will be home to Al Khor Sports Club. The design of the proposed host venue up to the semi-final matches is based on a Bedouin tent, and will have a retractable roof. After the tournament the stadium's modular seating will reduce to 32,000 with the surplus seats donated to global football development projects.

• Al Thumama Stadium: capacity for 40,000 fans and will host matches up to the quarter-finals. The stadium, designed by Qatari architect Ibrahim M Jaidah, represents the traditional gahfiya, and won the MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Award in May 2018. In legacy mode, seating will be reduced to 20,000. • Ras Abu Aboud Stadium: constructed from shipping containers, removable seats and other modular building blocks, the 40,000-seater stadium is the first fully reusable FIFA stadium. It will host matches up to the quarter-finals. • Lusail Stadium: seating 80,000, the stadium in Lusail City will host the opening and closing ceremonies, matches throughout the tournament, and the final, to be held on Qatar National Day, 18 December. Its design is inspired by the fanar lantern, as well as the motifs on bowls and other vessels seen throughout history in the Arab world. After the tournament, the stadium will be changed into a community space with schools, shops, cafés, sporting facilities and clinics.

Qatar Integrated Rail Project corp.qr.com.qa Following its establishment in 2011, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) is leading one of the largest rail projects in the world to meet the demands of Qatar’s dynamic and growing population. The company is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the entire network and systems. Water Security By Sarah Palmer One of the largest networks of reservoirs of its kind in the world, the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project, was recently inaugurated after nearly four years in the making.

I

n December 2018, the Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid Al Thani inaugurated the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project, one of the largest of its kind in the world, and the largest expansion of Qatar water storage capacity. The ceremony was attended by HH The Amir along with a number of dignitaries and senior officials from government and the public and private sector. In the opening ceremony, HE Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, stated that the QAR14.5 bn project – led by Kahramaa – is the largest in the world with an enormous strategic system. The total capacity is 1,500 million gallons, (MIG) which satisfies storage requirements up to 2026. It adds 155% to the current water storage capacity of 900 MIG. This phase of the project will ensure water security for the State until 2026, while future phases will meet water demand by adding additional reservoirs. Overall this will hopefully meet the needs of an increasing population and the continuing development in the country.

According to Kahramaa, the whole Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project includes 15 reservoirs in five sites with a total capacity of 1,500 MIG – or nine football fields and 180 Olympic swimming pools. Each reservoir is 300 m long, 150 m wide, and 12 m high, at a capacity of around 100 MIG.

The reservoir project is set to enter the Guinness World Records for the world's largest drinking water storage tank and largest drinking water storage tanks network. The project is in five strategic sites – Umm Birka, Umm Slal, Rawdat Rashed, Abu Nakhla, and Al Thumama – with each covering approximately 1 sq km. Over 650 km of pipelines connect the desalination plants to ensure water flow in both directions with operational flexibility to meet any emergency. The sites have been designed so that future expansion is possible, allowing for the construction of additional reservoirs without the installation of more pipelines. m Eng Issa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President of Kahramaa, said at the inauguaration that the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project began as a vision in 2007, as a solution to achieving water security in Qatar. The first phase of the project was inaugurated in June 2018 by HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. The foundation stone was laid in May 2015.

The purpose of the project is to provide the seven days of potable water storage in the new mega reservoirs and the existing and future secondary reservoirs with the water quality mandated under Kahramaa and World Health Organization standards. For fact fans, the weight of steel used in the pipes is equivalent to 70 Eiffel Towers and the concrete used is enough to build six of the world's tallest buildings! ©

Inside 5/6 Park: Qatar's Newest Public Park By Ola Diab

O

n the occasion of the third anniversary of the Qatar blockade, the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places under the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) announced the completion of the main works of the 5/6 Park in Onaiza on 5 June 2020. Located adjacent to the 5/6 interchange (5/6 Arch or Al Wahda Arches), the 5/6 Park is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places has completed the implementation of pedestrian, jogging and cycle paths, planting trees, a major plaza and maze, where completion has reached 80%. Work is currently underway to complete the remaining works, which includes lighting of the maze – the final form will be completed after the growth of plant barriers – the illuminated hill, service buildings and water drinking fountains as well as the children's play area, sports apparatus and garden furniture. The maze The 160,000 sq m 5/6 Park comprises many attractive features, but the most striking of these is a large green maze. This feature, which is at the heart of the park, emulates the map of Qatar in over 6,500 sq m. Engineer Hessa Kahmis Al Kaaby, Project Design Manager of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places, said, ‘The design of the maze is inspired by the human imprint to signify the role of all citizens and residents in creating glory and prosperity, a tribute to every person who leaves their imprints in the state. It also commemorates the resilience and success in overcoming the unjust blockade imposed on Qatar. We shall witness together the growth of these plants shaped by the imprints sketching many roads and paths, so the visitors will enjoy choosing different paths each time taking them towards different views of the park.’ The hill The final shape of the map appears clearly when looking at it from the top of the adjacent hill, adorned with fancy lighting to illuminate it at night. The hill next to the maze is about 5 m above ground level and located in the centre of the park on an area of 3,000 sq m. This hilltop area gives a QATAR INFRASTRUCTURE E-GUIDE ©

comprehensive view of the park from above, making it a major attraction for visitors and photographers. Visitors can also enjoy the view of some of Doha Bay's attractive landmarks such as the 5/6 Arch, Katara Hills, Lusail Towers and The Pearl-Qatar. Artwork The 5/6 Park is also home to various artworks, including ‘Al Somoud’ by Faisal Al Hajri, one of the prominent artists in Qatar. Two artworks from the collection of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art have been added to the Park: 'Poem' (1963-65), and 'Poem in Three Verses' (1963-65) by the Lebanese sculptor and painter Saloua Raouda Choucair. Planting greenery The park contains open green areas of approximately 107,000 sq m and small shrubs and tree fences of approximately 11,800 sq m, in addition to at least 1,500 trees. At least 10% the trees planted in the park are of Qatari origin such as Ziziphus Spina Christi, Acacia Arabica and Acacia Tortilis, which are evergreen trees that reach a height of more than 10 m and can bear the environmental conditions of high temperature and drought. Park facilities, utilities and services The park includes many facilities such as shaded seating areas, play areas for children with games suitable for different ages, celebration spaces and artwork exhibition spaces. The park also includes exercise areas, pedestrian paths of approximately 1.3 km, and jogging paths of a length of 1.3 km and a cycle path of a length of 0.88 km, in addition to bicycle parking slots. The interior footpath is constructed using earthy materials that reflects the natural desert shape of

The interior footpath is constructed using earthy materials that reflects the natural desert shape of Qatar’s environment. The committee has depended on locally produced materials in implementing this park up to the level of 65% of materials used. The local elements used included curbstone tiles, asphalt and lighting, in addition to planting materials of trees, grass, plants and soils, and homemade rubber floors known as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) used as a recycled rubber layer to form jogging tracks. The park also includes many utilities and service stalls such as restaurants, cafes, toilets and prayer places. In addition, the park is equipped with garden furniture and lighting poles to enable visitors to visit at night. The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar is working on constructing gardens, spreading green spaces and planting trees in various areas of the country in line with the state’s strategy to achieve environmental sustainability, one of the key the national development strategy as per Qatar National Vision 2030. The framework of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places focuses on implementing beautification and recreational projects that preserve the environment and contribute to an improved healthy life for Qatar's people. Thus, trees for plantation are chosen in consideration of the nature of Qatar's environment, taking into account less water consumption and future maintenance works. m

Trees of Qatar By Sarah Palmer

Q

atar is a small desert peninsula, with sporadic rainfall and a hot and humid climate. So you could be forgiven for thinking that plants and trees stand no chance of thriving here – you would be wrong!

The initiative will be carried out in two phases: the first phase is for the establishment of a large nursery for trees and plants; under the second, one million trees will be planted across the country with the participation of schools and other sectors.

Despite the somewhat harsh desert climate, the streets and gardens of Qatar are full of trees and shrubs, both indigenous and those brought in from other countries. They thrive thanks to modern agricultural techniques including artificial irrigation and careful planning by entities such as the Public Parks department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

According to Abdulhadi Nasser Al Marri, Director of the Climate Change Department, 'Apart from the one million tree initiative, which is a special project, the MME continues to plant trees and work to increase greeneries in parks, streets and other public places for beautification and to deter climate change and reducing carbon footprint.'

The Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) announced in 2019 that it would be planting one million trees in the country, part of the global initiative on climate change and sustainable environment. The planting project aims to utilise treated sewage water for irrigation, reducing water wastage, enhancing biological diversity, improving air quality, and increasing greenery to reduce Qatar's carbon footprint. Priority will be given to government facilities and roadsides in areas which are close to sources of treated water.

In 2018, the MME distributed 4,000 packets of seeds and 11,000 seedlings of wild plants to winter campers for planting in several areas to fight desertification. The Protection and Wildlife Department at the MME also fenced off 12 areas in December 2019 to protect rare native wild plants and trees that are at threat of extinction and overgrazing by animals, as well as to collect seeds for replanting. The department has planted 800 seedlings of Qatari wild trees, including Bumber, Awsaj, Sidr, and Samur. Rawdat Simaisma has been declared a protected area and 600 wild trees have been planted.

As part of the ‘Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees’ campaign, 25 young people from the Generation Amazing Festival 2019, organised by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, planted 50 trees at Al Masrah Park.

Other organisations in Qatar are also involved. The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has implemented the ‘Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees’ campaign to plant a million trees, to continue until the end of 2021. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of planting trees, and for students at different ages to be environmentally aware. The campaign is overseen by The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar. The committee, under the MME, works with other ministries and entities such as Qatar Museums, Qatar Railway Company, and Nakilat.

Department, Al Shamal Municipality, and the Public Parks Department, to protect Ghaf trees since 2015. At that time, there were just 50 trees – a recent survey shows that this has increased to more than 400 over the last three years. Ghaf (Prosopis cineraria) is an evergreen, spiny tree that can grow to 15 m in height, with a round canopy and distinctive loose, pendulous branches. Leaves are compound, and there are clusters of small, cream-yellow flowers.

The committee is a vision of The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to preserve the environment for future generations and increase green areas. It has five objectives: the construction of central public parks; provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles; the development of Doha Corniche; the development of Central Doha; and increasing afforestation and greenery areas. All of these efforts also fall under the fourth pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, Environmental Development, which outlines several challenges facing Qatar's environment, namely a rapidly growing population, increased air pollution, and damage to natural habitats.

Selected trees being used in beautification projects across Qatar One of the department's other projects is for the protection of a rare native tree, Ghaf (right). The Protection and Wildlife Department has collaborated with the Agricultural Affairs ©

Ghaf has a deep and extensive root system to reach groundwater, and has a high tolerance to Qatar's environmental conditions. The tree has been important to the Bedouins in the Arabian Gulf, with the leaves and pods being used as dry fodder for cattle and camels. The tree provides good firewood and is impervious to insects and ground worms. The honey produced by bees feeding on the flowers is of a good, high quality.

conditions, being able to withstand temperatures of up to 47°C. The single trunk can grow up to 15 m in height and is a relative of Phoenix dactylifera, the date palm more often seen in Qatar. It can be found in most of the public parks, lining footpaths in clusters or as a single tree among other shrubs. The Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis) has been successfully cultivated in Qatar. It prefers moist soil and thrives in direct sunlight. The tree grows to about 4 m with slender leaves on pendant branches. The name comes from the bright red stamens which resemble a bottle brush. The swaying branches are quite beautiful to look at throughout the year, and can be grown as hedges and screens in public spaces.

Sant (Vachellia nilotica), seen above at Aspire Park, is an evergreen, fast-growing tree that can reach 10 m, dark to black-coloured stems and branches, and a grey, red or brown rough bark. Again leaves are compound, and bright yellow flowers bloom in spring and summer. It is more commonly known as the gum arabic tree or prickly acacia, and although the tree has been used in beautification projects, precaution should be taken due to its thorns.

You can learn more about parks and public spaces in Qatar in Sightseeing, in the Discovering Qatar section. More information about the local flora and fauna is readily available from Qatar e-Nature, at enature.qa or via the app. This is an initiative of Sasol and Friends of the Environment Center, and supported by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Canary Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is, as you might guess from the name, a native invasive tree from the Canary Islands. It has been brought to Qatar due to its tolerance for harsh environmental

Industrial Area Barwa Commercial Avenue Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor *This new section of Doha Expressway bypasses Al Wakra and connects with Mesaieed Road

The Doha Expressway is now complete. We can now drive non-stop from Al Shamal and Ras Laffan Industrial City in the north, through Doha, then skirting Al Wakra and the two free zones of QFZ before reaching Hamad Port and Mesaieed. Also from south to north of course. This long, wide and safe expressway, or highway, has given to all sections of the population and

industry unprecedented mobility and ability to access all regions of the country. Most of the interchanges on the expressway, and elsewhere, are very pleasing to the eye; they are largely symmetrical with lots of tight loops. This last interchange completing the Expressway is significantly different. Whereas in the past most interchanges have had four roads radiationg from

their centres, this interchange had to combine not four but five roads. The solution has been unique in Qatar and it looks unique, too. Instead of orderly symmetry, we can revel in a glorious nonconformity of individualism. From the north, access to Hamad International Airport (HIA), G Ring Road and the Industrial Area, the Qatar Free Zones, Hamad Port and Mesaieed Industrial City, has been massively improved.

This easy access especially facilitates the further integration of Hamad Port which has come into operation at a critical time for Qatar and its transport links. If anything, Qatar’s transformation seems to be accelerating. These are infrastructure projects on a scale barely thought possible until now, but necessary for modern Qatar to function efficiently at the next level of development. ©
