EAA announces Qatar Has Talent

EAA’s back to school campaign in support of underprivileged children gets more exciting with the addition of the Qatar Has Talent competition.

Education Above All Foundation (EAA) was established by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, and today works in over 59 countries, transforming the lives of 16 million marginalized and impoverished children and youth.

EAA’s purpose through its back to school campaign is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of quality education, good health and well-being, and partnerships for the goals. Qatar Has Talent is the latest initiative in this endeavour. In March 2023, EAA organised a football tournament and art competition between 36 schools in Qatar, an event that raised enough funds to benefit 50,000 children.

Expo 2023 Doha will make history as the first A1 International Horticultural Exhibition to be held in Qatar, and in the MENA region – indeed, the first to be held in a desert climate.

The six-month long event is a collaboration between the Bureau International Des Expositions (BIE) and the International Association for Horticultural Producers (AIPH). BIE is the intergovernmental organisation based in Paris that oversees and regulates all international exhibitions that last more than three weeks and are of non-commercial nature.

Expo 2023 Doha will attract international visitors and feature participation from 80 countries and NGOs. The Expo is developed under Qatar National Vision 2030 and is being organised by the Ministry of Municipality.

The theme is ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’, addressing the challenges faced by hot desert nations with regard to desertification and sustainability. Historically, greening the desert was a challenge. It is now possible to achieve, and can be the answer to global water, energy, and food scarcity problems. One-third of the world’s land surface is threatened by desertification and an additional 12 mn hectares of arid land is emerging each year. Desertification has become a pressing global issue, affecting the livelihoods of millions of people who rely on the benefits of ecosystems that drylands provide. As land becomes more arid, so people will migrate from rural to urban areas, causing both an environmental and economic problem. To achieve – and maintain – a green desert, there is a need for a platform where people can come together to exchange information, technology and innovations.

Visitors will be inspired to explore and adopt change through four sub-themes: modern agriculture, technology and innovation, environmental awareness and sustainability. Expo 2023 Doha will also aim to attract cutting-edge global technologies and foster international collaborations to achieve goals.

According to Expo 2023 Doha Secretary General, Mohamed Ali Al Khouri, ‘By hosting this event, we are raising awareness about the importance of more sustainable livelihoods and sending a powerful sustainability message to all visitors and particularly younger generations.’

With the event lasting six months, it has the potential to create a an exceptional and lasting impact. The organisers and the ministry have worked on a strong thematic programme that involves a number of international specialised agencies and organisations. The overarching aim is to leave behind a substantial legacy and surpass the achievements of previous horticultural expos.

WHAT EXPO 2023 DOHA WILL OFFER

The event is expected to attract a total of 3 mn visitors and will take place in the beautiful Al Bidda Park, spanning 1.7 mn sq m and overlooking the waters of the Arabian Gulf. There will be a slew of activities and entertainment suitable for everyone: business visitors, horticulture enthusiasts, tourists, families, and children.

On offer will be the extensive gardens in the park, thought-provoking talks, conferences, art and F&B choices. Facilities include congress and exhibition centres, a family amphitheatre, domes with indoor gardens, a cultural bazaar, a farmers market, an environment centre and biodiversity museum, and a grandstand arena.

One particular hightlight of the event will be the National Day celebrations, to take place on 18 December, to include a flag-raising ceremony with international official delegations in attendance.

Expo 2023 Doha will be divided into three distinct areas where volunteers will be assigned – between 3,000 and 4,000 will be recruited for the six month event.

The international area, located in the northern part of the park, will serve as the gateway to the expo and the main hub for international gardens, exhibitions, and events, covering an approximate area of 700,000 sq m. The family area, occupying a central position within the park, will provide a focal point for family-oriented activities, gatherings, and outdoor pursuits, encompassing an estimated area of 500,000 sq m. The third area, the cultural area, is located in the southern zone, and will serve as a venue for cultural and traditional activities, and exhibitions, and covers a space of approximately 500,000 sq m.

Expo 2023 Doha is scheduled to run from 2 October 2023 until 28 March 2024 – at 179 days, this is the second-largest event Qatar will host after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. The Expo promises to be yet another successful international event in Qatar!

GWS publishes the annual Global Wellness Trends report. GWC recently published The Future of Wellness 2023 Trends report, which identifies 12 key wellness trends impacting the wellness economy in 2023 and beyond. Rigorous, international research in this report unveils that the long, thoughtful pause forced by the pandemic has transformed the very idea of "wellness". People are now more reflective, they seek more science, they’re less selfish (more concerned about each other and the planet) and want solutions that are meaningful and work. You can purchase this longest-running, most in-depth wellness trends report to understand the meaningful shifts impacting your business and investments at globalwellnesssummit.com. Your purchase includes access to a recording of the recent Trends Master Class, where Beth McGroarty and six other experts unpack the 160-page report. m

Academy Course Greens Rebuilt

With the successful implementation of Paspalum Greens on the Championship Course, the Academy Course now follows suit.

The work to the putting surfaces on the Academy Course will be the first of its kind since the course was constructed, with the grass on the greens changing to the paspallum ‘dynasty’ species.

The greens were constructed in 1996, and grass technology has come a long way since then and the passpallum dynasty grass we have selected doesn’t mind the TSE that is now used.

The majority of the greens will be expanded back to their original size and will be reinstated back to their original slopes and elevations, with some fresh surrounds and run-off areas being added by new Course Superintendent, Andrew Ikstrums. Work commenced at the end of June, and the greens will reopened in mid-August.

We look forward to welcoming you to our refurbished Academy Course

About motorsport in Qatar and at Lusail International Circuit

Lusail International Circuit lies on the outskirts of Doha. The track and complex took just over a year to build, cost USD58 mn and had almost 1,000 staff working around the clock to get it ready for the inaugural event, the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar on 2 October 2004.

The 5.4 km track is surrounded by artificial grass to prevent sand from the desert from blowing onto the circuit. The main straight is over 1 km long giving overtaking opportunities at Turn 1, and there are a number of medium and high-speed corners, including some popular quick left-handers. The first night time Grand Prix in history took place in 2008, thanks to the construction of permanent outdoor lighting. This was such a success that the Qatar event is now one of the most spectacular on the MotoGP calendar.

But it isn’t just MotoGP that Qatar is now known for. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sporting events were cancelled, leaving a gap in the FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) 2021 season. Qatar quickly stepped in to assist and hosted its first F1 race, the Qatar Grand Prix, on 21 November, in place of the cancelled Australian Grand Prix. The country subsequently signed a 10-year deal with F1 to start in 2023, with 2022 skipped to avoid any clash with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. The initial F1 event saw some issues arise, namely the small pit garages that were designed for MotoGP, as well as the need to erect temporary team hospitality buildings in the paddock. Therefore the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) were tasked with implementing the Lusail Circuit Upgrade Project as part of the country’s preparations to host future Qatar Grand Prix F1 events.

There are now new grandstands to accommodate 40,000+ spectators, increased parking slots, an entirely new pits and paddock complex, medical centre, race control, media centre and expanded fan zones. In addition the surrounding and internal roads have been redeveloped. As part of the upgrade, the circuit has been resurfaced but there have been no changes to the layout.

According to formula1.com, for the best place to watch races ‘the grandstand at the exit of Turn 10 gives fans the chance to watch the cars blasting through this dynamic section of the track, pitching right through the fast kink of Turn 9 and into the Turn 10 braking zone.’

Qatar Airways is the global partner and official airline of F1 through to the 2027 season and title sponsor for both the F1 Qatar Grand Prix and Qatar MotoGP.

Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar Qatar hosts the penultimate race of the 2023 MotoGP season on 17 – 19 November. Qatar had opened the MotoGP™ Championship for the last 16 seasons, but the event was pushed back in the 2023 season due to the renovations.

As well as MotoGP are the Moto2 and Moto3 categories. Practice sessions will be on the 17th, and practice and qualifying on the 18th. The races will be on the 19th: Moto3 at 5 pm, Moto2 at 6:15 pm, and MotoGP at 8 pm (all local time, GMT +3).

The race, Qatar 1812, will be the season opener on 2 March 2024, over a distance of 1,812 km or a maximum duration of 10 hours. The event will be a landmark moment as there will be a record number of manufacturers in the WEC’s Hypercar category. The WEC’s official pre-season test, known as The Prologue, will take place on 24 – 25 February. fiawec.com
