marhaba.qa Qatar offers a wide range of authentic tourism experiences, in addition to hosting close to 80 sporting events annually, and is the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM and the 2023 FINA World Swimming Championships.

Tourist arrivals Qatar succesfully hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM from 20 November to 18 December 2022, welcoming more than 1.4 mn. Visitors are still flocking to Qatar.

A range of visa measures announced by Qatar Tourism (QT), formerly known as Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), have been widely welcomed by tourism industry professionals, as well as the country’s hospitality and retail operators. The introduction of the free, 96-hour transit visa and +Qatar (an initiative to promote Qatar as a stopover destination by QT and Qatar Airways) has resulted in bringing close to 200,000 visitors to Qatar. In August 2017, Qatar introduced visa waivers for citizens of more than 95 countries. Since inception, at least 275,000 visitors have entered Qatar visa-free. In 2022, Qatar introduced digital Hayya Card, the fan identification and an entry permit into Qatar during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, resulted in bringing 1.3 mn international visitors to Qatar. It relaunched after the tournament allowing more access for tourists who currently require visas to enter Qatar. Qatar is the safest country in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by Country 2023. Doha is ranked as the second safest city in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2023. In recent years, Qatar and its capital city Doha have continued to retain their global distinction as one of the safest countries in the world. Qatar has taken the title as the world's safest country at least five times on Numbeo since in 2017. Qatar has been named the safest Arab country since 2015. Doha has been named among the top cities to live in, according to the World Best Cities 2023 rankings by Resonance Consultancy, a leading global advisor on placemaking, branding and marketing for the world’s best cities, districts, developments and destinations. The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism named Doha as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2023 during its 25th session at the Arab League General Secretariat in December 2022.

Qatar has welcomed more than 2 mn international visitors, with May and June registering the highest figure – 567,000 – ever recorded in the last ten years. International arrivals in 2023 have so far doubled compared to the levels seen prepandemic. From 2023 to date, arrivals by air constituted 51% of all visitors to Qatar, while arrivals by land and sea comprised 37% and 12% of the total figures, respectively. Visitors from Saudi Arabia remain the top source market for international visitors this year, contributing to nearly a quarter of all arrivals. India and Germany follow.

Boosting tourism

Hotel and hotel apartment performance Qatar's hospitality sector witnessed an improved room yield in April 2023, mainly lifted by five-star hotels and deluxe hotel apartments, as visitor arrivals surged compared to the same month last year. This comes in view of a 231.5% annual increase in visitor arrivals.

Cruise industry Qatar continues to impress as a major international tourism destination. New data from Qatar Tourism (QT) reveals that the country welcomed 253,191 cruise visitors during its 2022–23 season (December 2022 – March 2023), an increase of 151% compared to the previous season (100,500 visitors). This sharp uptake in visitor figures is particularly impressive given that this year’s cruise season began later than usual, in December rather than October, as the Doha Port was hosting floating hotels during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ to accommodate visitors and fans. Over the past few years, QT and Mwani Qatar, the organisations responsible for managing the country’s shipping terminals and seaports, have established a number of strong relationships with international cruise operators as well as with other specialists involved in the industry. This has proved to be of great importance as Qatar benefitted from cruise ships during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, as a means of providing additional ©

which includes the use of enhanced technology and close collaboration between cruise operators and security officials – a passenger manifest containing the passport details of passengers and crew will be shared with immigration officials 48 hours prior to a ship’s arrival in Qatar. This will allow the authorities to process all relevant information and clear passengers for entry before the ship's berthing, enabling travellers to disembark within minutes and begin on-shore excursions.

accommodation for fans and visitors. Two giant cruise ships served as floating hotels during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM at Doha Port. The cruise ships had a combined capacity of 4,000 rooms, which accommodated up to 9,400 people. Among the number of cruise visitors welcomed this season, 37,144 were turnaround passengers, a 790% increase on last season’s numbers (4,172 passengers). Qatar received a total of 54 calls during the 2022–23 cruise season, both transit and turnaround, which marks a 59% uptake on last year. Most cruise passengers originated from Germany, Italy, Russia, and the UK. Doha Port was able to welcome a 100% increase in mega ships – 44 were welcomed this season – with MSC World Europa bringing in the most passengers (13 calls in total). The next cruise season 2023–24 will begin on 8 October 2023. Cruise passengers arriving to Qatar through Doha Port will be welcomed in the brandnew Grand Terminal that features state-of-the-art facilities. Upon exiting, passengers find themselves by the Mina District, a colourful destination where visitors can enjoy plenty of restaurant options, retail outlets, and a stunning promenade. Cruise passengers can also avail of the new transit visa. As part of the new operating procedure –

QT’s projections show continued growth in the cruise tourism industry over the coming years. With the completion of the Doha Port redevelopment, and the associated capacity increase, which allows the port to receive two megaships at once, Qatar is expected to attract 500,000 cruise tourists by 2026.

Next Chapter On World Tourism Day 2017, held annually on 27 September, Qatar launched the Next Chapter of its National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, which charted the next five years of the tourism sector’s growth in Qatar. According to QT, the next chapter aims to attract 6 mn visitors to Qatar annually. It also aims to achieve a 72% occupancy rate across all hotel establishments, through a combination of increasing demand and diversifying the country’s tourist accommodation offering. Visitor arrivals in Doha are projected to grow by 104% by 2025, making it the fastest-growing tourist destination among major cities worldwide. The city is expected to see more than 4.51 mn visitors in 2025. Tourism is expected to play a greater role in Qatar’s economy as the sector’s share of the country’s GDP will be nearly QAR133.5 bn in 2028, reports the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Travel and tourism investment in Qatar may exceed QAR14.5 bn, or 4.2% of total investments in the country, in 2028. m

In November 2018, The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued Decision No 74 of 2018 establishing Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC), cancelling QTA and the government committee to coordinate conferences and events. In 2021, Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) was renamed Qatar Tourism (QT). Chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, QT promotes Qatar as a destination around the world, through its destination branding, international representation and participation at trade shows, and by developing a rich calendar of festivals and events. QT is growing internationally with representative offices in London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Singapore and more cities. QT works in partnership with public and private stakeholders to achieve this mission by planning, regulating and promoting a sustainable and diverse tourism industry while perpetuating Qatar’s culture.

Art is becoming an essential part of a hotel’s essence and décor with many hotels hiring curators to help them tell their story through art.

Symbolically intertwined with Qatar’s heritage, the iconic towers in Lusail City are an architectural translation of Qatar’s national seal, representing the traditional scimitar swords. Some see that role as an offspring of interior design, with the responsibility of the art curator to decorate the space created by the designer,’ he said.

The Qatari people have for centuries been "Trades of Cultures",’ said Danai, adding that the over-arching curatorial framework rests on the idea of ‘Trades of Cultures’ or ‘Trading Cultures’. From that narrative, they have branched out into related narratives and have focused elements of the collection on specific areas that feature their own stories. ‘The unique position on the Silk Route and the reliance on pearling and the pearl trade have brought many a people from many cultures to Qatar. With over 20 years of hospitality experience across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Thomas brings a wealth of experience in his role. He joined Mandarin Oriental, Doha in 2019 as the Hotel Manager and has since demonstrated his exceptional leadership capabilities. Marhaba interviews the new GM of Mandarin Oriental, Doha, Thomas Kinsperger.

You have been with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group since 2008. What are your highlights/ fondest memories during these 15 years? I began my career with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 2008 at the iconic Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok and worked for 10 years in various positions. This experience ingrained Mandarin Oriental’s signature oriental and Asian hospitality service and guiding principles in my day to day. I don’t think there is one to single out; however, what I find the most rewarding is when colleagues who I worked closely with over the years are passionate about what they do and progress in their careers and when you keep in touch they show their appreciation.

What accolades have you received during your time at the Mandarin Oriental, Doha? Mandarin Oriental, Doha has been consistently recognised throughout its operations from service, F&B and Spa since opening in March 2019. We sustained the distinction of a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star award for four years since 2020 as the only

hotel in Doha and then after awarded for the second and third year achieving Five-Stars for Spa and Hotel in 2023.

Can you tell us what the Mandarin Oriental, Doha offers to guests? Mandarin Oriental hotels are renowned for their innovative restaurants and our 10 dining outlets offer an exceptional array of culinary destinations to delight all tastes and preferences. What do you have planned for the future of the hotel in your new role as GM? Talent for hospitality is getting less and less and we are in a unique position here in Doha that we can attract talents from around the world. We now have 60+ nationalities and we need to be an incubator for young talents and provide with training and development programs to maximise their potential and retain them on a group level. From a business point of view, our focus will be largely on the regional traveller and promoting the destination together with Msheireb Downtown Doha and with that the hotel. dagio and Ibis Doha recently appointed Rajiv Tarcat as the new General Manager.

With more than 20 years of experience across three continents fulfilling various senior leadership roles in the hospitality sector, Rajiv Tarcar has worked with international brands such as Marriott, Intercontinental, Premier Inn and now Accor. Due to his flawless track record in Qatar, Rajiv was featured in the Top 100 General Managers Power List 2021 – one of only five GMs from Qatar to make it onto the illustrious list. You have worked in Doha before, a few years ago. How do you feel the hotel landscape here has changed? When I arrived in Doha in 2015, the city was undergoing significant development in the hospitality sector. Since then, I have witnessed remarkable changes in the hotel landscape and the country’s infrastructure. The city has seen the addition of several new luxury hotels, an increase in international hotel chains, and a growth in offerings and amenities. Doha has truly transformed into a vibrant and diverse destination, attracting both business and leisure travellers. What plans do you have for the hotels this year and beyond? Ibis is arguably the world’s most popular economy brand with great locations, from London and Paris to Sydney and Tokyo. The brand has been long awaited in the Doha market and we are currently operating at over 90% occupancy with demand soaring. Over the coming 12 months, we are opening three new outlets which will change the landscape of the hotel providing more dining options for our in-house as well as community guests. Adagio on the other hand

is a premium aparthotel and is offering a fantastic apartment hotel product at great value prices. What can guests expect from a stay at the Adagio and Ibis Doha? Ibis is ranked in the Top 10 hotels in Doha on Tripadvisor by our guests who believe that we are offering a fantastic value proposition while delivering a great service, from the booking stage to their checkout. The guests also get to earn loyalty points on all programmes, which is our loyalty platform for Accor. Very few of our competitors in midscale hotels offer loyalty points for their stay, and this is our USP. Tell us what a normal day is like for a general manager of a hotel? I start my day at 7:30 am with a walk around including the guest floors. It usually takes me 12-15 minutes to say ‘Hi’ to my team and guests who are heading down for breakfast or to their taxi to take their flight home. Following that, I have a couple of hours of back-toback meetings focussing on commercial strategy, sales, guest feedback and operations. From the age of 18, I have had a flair for food and beverage and have worked and managed some amazing venues, bars and restaurants in the UK. I am a keen networker and like to visit various restaurants in Doha to be closely connected with what the customer wants. Any exclusive news you can share with our readers? The hotel opened less than six months ago and we are a very popular location for tourism corporates and locals already. We had 2,500 iftar bookings during Ramadan so the response to our F&B proposition is very promising. We are opening two new outlets this summer. We are also launching an Indian Street Food Brunch on Fridays in August. Watch this space! Ammar Samad Multi-Property General Manager

What do you think of the hospitality industry in Qatar? True. I have worked in different countries which made me gain a lot of experience and knowledge about the hospitality sector. I would say that Qatar has fascinated me with its unique 5-star services. Also, we have a lot of career opportunities, especially with the new projects which have been finalised within the past year. Qatar is an amazing touristic hub with iconic souks such as Souq Waqif, the bustling Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), fantastic museums, and much more. What developments in the hospitality industry do you see unfolding during and after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM? Hosting so many visitors in town will have a huge impact on future business, and this will also create more work opportunities along with healthy competition in the market. You have said that you would like to take the Westin hotel to the next level. Please tell us more. We are working on launching a lot of new concepts. For example, in November, we will be launching our new concept at Mix Lounge which is INCA. This will be the largest rooftop venue in Qatar. We have recently launched a new Asian Brunch concept at Sabai Thai which takes our guests to six different Asian countries and explores authentic dishes, and I am happy to say that it is already getting fully booked every week! alah Bsisso is the hotel manager of the new Maysan Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

Salah began his luxury career in Jordan as a busboy at The Four Seasons Amman. He was later promoted to server while continuing to study. After earning a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, he was selected as an Executive Butler at the renowned Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the UAE. His professional turning point was joining Marriott’s The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, where he worked for six years and steadily advanced within the organisation. The next leg of his adventure took him to Saudi Arabia, where he served as Director of Rooms for Le Méridien Riyadh until 2022. He then relocated to Doha where he joined Katara Hills Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts, and became the hotel manager at Maysan Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts. Marhaba was able to interview Salah about his career, Maysan Doha and his thoughts on the hospitality industry in Qatar. You are now the hotel manager at the luxurious Maysan Doha – how do you spend an average day at work? I start my day in the morning going through the numbers of last night and review FO Operations. Then I start checking our restaurant for breakfast service. After we meet with all our hotel leaders in the morning, I go through the special requests and pre-arrival responses to our Villa Hosts team and ask if they need anything for the personalised set-ups at villas.

I spend most of the afternoon interacting with guests on check-in as I like to welcome them and tour the hotel with them. I then catch up on meetings planned for the day and return to operations to assist my team. What does your hotel offer guests in terms of experiences? We provide our visitors with privacy and prestige. I define our service as being luxurious, anchored in Qatari culture, and tailored to our contemporary lifestyle. Our Villa Hosts dedicate their day to setting up picnics at Aspire Park and creating custom arrangements for special occasions. What do you think will be the future of tourism and hospitality, both in Qatar and worldwide? I believe that in the future, the hospitality industry will increasingly incorporate technology to provide personalised and genuine experiences. We can expect the emergence of hotel brands that cater to specific preferences or combine business and leisure offerings. There will be a growing demand from customers for immersive experiences that allow them to deeply engage with the local culture of their destination. Do you have any stand-out memories and achievements during your time in hospitality? My favourite moment was when we celebrated the end of a stay of famous Arab designer and my butler team gifted her a Barbie wearing the design resembling her first abaya dress. She was so touched and happy. On a personal note, do you get the chance to travel much, and what do you look for when staying in hotels? I love travelling. Asia is my favourite destination.
