An exhibition organised by the future Art Mill Museum, on art and architecture from Pakistan from the 1940s to the present day. Approximately 200 paintings, drawings, photographs, videos, sculptures, installations, tapestries, and miniatures across eight decades are on display based on the Urdu word manzar, meaning a scene, a view, a landscape, or a perspective.

Until Palestine: A Journey Through Time Book Display The MIA Rare Book room presents a collection of rare books dating from 1615 to 1930 CE, written by European travellers to showcase the beauty of Palestine's architecture, nature, culture, and customs. At the library majlis, visitors can read books about Palestine and write notes to hang on the ‘Support Palestine’ tree.

9 Aug – 9 Nov In the Footsteps of Ara Güler A collaboration between the Ara Güler Museum in Istanbul and Qatar Museums, this is a journey into the life and career of the globally acclaimed photographer spanning 70 years. At the exhibition are archaeological findings across Turkey, portraits of notable figures of his time, and the screening of Hero’s End, a film directed, written and produced by Güler.

2 Nov – Ektashif: Morocco Exhibition Part of Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture. The exhibition will showcase artworks by a number of Qatari artists who travelled to Morocco to explore Islamic architecture, and participated in art workshops led by expert craftsmen to learn traditional arts.

What's on at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Ongoing Mathaf galleries The museum's collection bring an original perspective to local and global conversations on art and society. Galleries 1–7 are for temporary exhibitions, Galleries 8–12 are the permanent collection.

Until Khalid Albaih: Shahid Shahid, Arabic for witness, is an interactive audiovisual installation by artist Khalid Albaih, with four printed digital illustrations on a mirror along the width of the wall. The drawings relate to poignant moments that went viral on social media, showing what it means to be a witness to the devastation in Palestine and asking visitors to reflect on the responsibility that comes with that role.

22 Oct – The Art and Influence of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) (right) Organised by the future Lusail Museum in collaboration with Mathaf, drawing from the Lusail Museum’s substantial collection of Orientalist paintings, as well as important international loans and artist commissions, to celebrate and reevaluate the artist’s legacy throughout his lifetime until the present day.

3 Nov – Forensic Architecture The origins of Forensic Architecture (FA) lie in seeking to confront settler-colonial violence in Palestine with locally situated counter-investigations. In the context of Israel's military campaign in the occupied Gaza Strip, this exhibition is FA's first solo exhibition in the Gulf, with new counterinvestigations produced with Palestinian civil society groups in the country. Shown publicly for the first time, the projects foreground the voices and living testimonies of survivors to reconstruct lost live-worlds, demonstrating the historical continuity of the Palestinian experience of an ongoing, and escalating, Nakba.

THE THRILL OF THE RACE!

Qatar is well known for its love of motorsports, with a rich history of events hosted by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF). Since 1987, QMMF has developed motorsport in Qatar and across the region, promoting the country’s profile in the global sporting arena.

This year has seen one of QMMF’s most action-packed calendars featuring more than 40 events, including the Qatar International Rally, the inaugural Qatar 1812 KM – FIA World Endurance Championship, and the 2024 MotoGPTM Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar.

The action will be continuing into the autumn and winter months, with more rounds of the Qatar National Sprint, Qatar Off-Road Championship, Qatar Superstock 600 Championship, and Qatar Touring Car Championship.

However, eagerly awaited is the return of one of motorsports most prestigious events – the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2024, taking place at the iconic Lusail International Circuit.

The circuit, which lies on the outskirts of Doha, took just over a year to build, cost USD58 mn and had almost 1,000 staff working around the clock to get it ready for the inaugural event, the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar on 2 October 2004.

The 5.4 km track is surrounded by artificial grass to prevent sand from the desert from blowing onto the circuit. The main straight is over 1 km long giving overtaking opportunities at Turn 1, and there are a number of medium and high-speed corners, including some popular quick left-handers. The first night time Grand Prix in history took place in 2008, thanks to the construction of permanent outdoor lighting. This was such a success that the Qatar event is now one of the most spectacular on the MotoGP calendar.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many sporting events were cancelled, leaving a gap in the FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) 2021 season. Qatar quickly stepped in to assist and hosted its first F1 race, the Qatar Grand Prix, on 21 November, in place of the cancelled Australian Grand Prix. The country subsequently signed a 10-year deal with F1 to start in 2023, with 2022 skipped to avoid any clash with the FIFA World Cup Qatar

2022TM. Qatar Airways is the global partner and official airline of F1 through to the 2027 season and title sponsor for both the F1 Qatar Grand Prix and Qatar MotoGP.

The initial F1 event saw some issues arise, namely the small pit garages that were designed for MotoGP, as well as the need to erect temporary team hospitality buildings in the paddock. Therefore the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) implemented the Lusail Circuit Upgrade Project to host future F1 events.

There are now grandstands for 40,000+ spectators, increased parking, an entirely new pits and paddock complex, medical centre, race control, media centre and expanded fan zones.The surrounding and internal roads have been redeveloped, and while the circuit was resurfaced, no changes were made to the layout.

According to formula1.com, for the best place to watch races ‘the grandstand at the exit of Turn 10 gives fans the chance to watch the cars blasting through this dynamic section of the track, pitching right through the fast kink of Turn 9 and into the Turn 10 braking zone.’

In 2023, the race was the 17th round of the F1 World Championship. Max Verstappen won both the race and the fastest lap, and ultimately his third Driver’s Championship. With a much tighter 2024 season, will Verstappen be victorious again or will Qatar crown a new champion?

The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2024 will take place 29 November to 1 December and will be the 23rd and penultimate round of the season Schedule (in local time, GMT +3 hours):

• 29 November – Practice 1 at 4:30 pm; Sprint Qualifying – 8:30 pm.

• 30 November – Sprint at 4:00 pm; Qualifying at 8:00 pm.

• 1 December – Race at 8:00 pm.

Qatar Olympic Committee

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was established in 1979 to oversee sports events and subsequently became members of the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Council of Asia, and the Arab Sports Games Federation. In 2021 Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was re-elected President of the QOC.

QOC released its 2023–2030 Strategy in March 2023, with three main objectives: ensuring sports excellence; promoting Olympic culture; and achieving comprehensive sports development.

The Rise of Padel in Qatar

This October, the International Padel Federation (FIP) in collaboration with the Qatar Tennis Federation will host the 17th edition of the FIP World Padel Championships at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

The news was revealed in May, when Qatar was selected to host this year’s tournament based on the availability of world-class sporting facilities, the conditions and support for players, and the country's previous experience of hosting major events, as well as the strategic geographic location.

The flagship FIP bi-annual event has the participation of 16 national teams across both the men’s and women’s categories. The 17th FIP World Padel Championships will have a prize pool of €500,000, equally distributed between men and women to all countries qualified for the final stage.

Completing the series of World Championships in padel, the FIP World Padel Championships follows on from the FIP Seniors World Padel Championships in La Nucía, Alicante, in April this year, and the FIP Juniors World Padel Championships in Asunción last year.

The FIP World Padel Championships returns to Doha three years after the remarkable success of the 2021 edition. A total of 16 female teams and 16 male teams from 19 countries competed, with Spain triumphant in both the men’s and women’s team competitions and Argentina winning silver in both categories.

The last edition of the FIP World Padel Championships took place in 2022 in Dubai and saw Argentina winning the men’s tournament while Spain triumphed in the women’s category.

International Padel Federation President Luigi Carraro said, 'We are delighted to finalise the venue for the 2024 FIP World Padel Championships. Padel progress

In August 2023, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), a subsidiary of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund and one of the world’s leading sports investment companies, acquired the World Padel Tour (WPT) from the Spanish Damm Group, the owner of Setpoint Events, which organises the tour.

This marked a significant turning point in the sport. The move will merge Premier Padel, the new circuit created following QSI’s investment partnership with the International Padel Federation (FIP) in February 2022, and the rival WPT, uniting them into a single global professional padel tour.

It will be operated by QSI but governed by the International Padel Federation (FIP). The deal reflected months of negotiations between the involved parties, and resolved around 18 months of disputes between QSI, FIP, and professional padel players who participated in both tours.

A new unified Premier Padel global tour, overseen by FIP, commenced in 2024.

The acquisition of WPT will add to a portfolio of interests which includes the French football club, Paris Saint-Germain FC and an almost 22% stake in the Portuguese football club Sporting Braga.

Padel is one of the world's fastest-growing sports, with tens of millions of players around the world.

An estimated 25 mn people currently play padel in 110 countries.

The popularity of padel in Qatar has also skyrocketed in just the last couple of years, thanks to huge investment by Qatar Tennis Federation, and a passionate local fan base.

This acquisition will further accelerate the sport's international growth, and also reflects the growing influence of the Gulf region in the international sports arena. QSI has immense resources and a commitment to promoting padel both domestically and internationally.

Speaking as Chairman of QSI about this significant event, Nasser Al Khelaifi said, 'This is a historic moment for the sport of padel, ultimately seeing the two leading professional padel tours unified as one single global Premier Padel tour.
