Tourism in Qatar
Boosting tourism
A range of visa measures announced by Qatar Tourism (QT), formerly known as Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), have been widely welcomed by tourism industry professionals, as well as the country’s hospitality and retail operators.
The introduction of the free, 96-hour transit visa and +Qatar (an initiative to promote Qatar as a stopover destination by QT and Qatar Airways) has resulted in bringing close to 200,000 visitors to Qatar.
In August 2017, Qatar introduced visa waivers for citizens of 101 countries. Since inception, at least 275,000 visitors have entered Qatar visa-free.
In 2022, Qatar introduced digital Hayya Card, the fan identification and an entry permit into Qatar during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, which resulted in bringing 1.4 mn international visitors to Qatar. It relaunched after the tournament allowing more access for tourists who currently require visas to enter Qatar.
Qatar is the safest country in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by Country 2023. Doha is ranked as the second safest city in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2023. In recent years, Qatar and its capital city Doha have continued to retain their global distinction as one of the safest countries in the world. Qatar has taken the title as the world's safest country at least five times on Numbeo since in 2017. Qatar has been named the safest Arab country since 2015.
Doha has been named among the top cities to live in, according to the World Best Cities 2023 rankings by Resonance Consultancy, a leading global advisor on placemaking, branding and marketing for the world’s best cities, districts, developments and destinations.
The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism named Doha as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2023 during its 25th session at the Arab League General Secretariat in December 2022.
Qatar offers a wide range of authentic tourism experiences, in addition to hosting close to 80 sporting events annually, and is the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM.
This year, Qatar hosts Expo 2023 Doha (International Horticultural Exposition), which runs from 2 October 2023 to 28 March 2024. Qatar also hosted the first Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) Qatar 2023 from 5 to 14 October 2023.
Tourist arrivals
Qatar succesfully hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM from 20 November to 18 December 2022, welcoming more than 1.4 mn international visitors. Visitors are still flocking to Qatar.
Qatar welcomed over 2.56 mn visitors in the first eight months of 2023 – exceeding the full-year arrival figures witnessed in 2022 and marking a 157% increase over the same period last year. Visitors to Qatar hail from around the world, with countries in the top 10 being Saudi Arabia, India, Germany, the US, the UK, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, UAE and Pakistan.
Hotel and hotel apartment performance
Qatar’s hotel sector witnessed significant developments with the total supply of rooms increasing by more than 8,000 over the past 18 months. At the time of writing (October 2023), Qatar’s total supply of hotel rooms stood at more than 38,000 and is expected to surpass 40,000 rooms by the end of 2023.
Cruise industry
Qatar continues to impress as a major international tourism destination. New data from QT reveals that the country welcomed 253,191 cruise visitors during its 2022–23 season (December 2022 – March 2023), an increase of 151% compared to the previous season (100,500 visitors). This sharp uptake in visitor figures is particularly impressive given that this year’s cruise season began later than usual, in December rather than October, as the Doha Port was hosting floating hotels during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ to accommodate visitors and fans.
The 2023–24 cruise season began on 28 October 2023 and will run until April 2024. It is expected to welcome 81 cruise calls and approximately 350,000 passengers, making it the country’s biggest cruise season yet.
Over the past few years, QT and Mwani Qatar, the organisations responsible for managing the country’s shipping terminals and seaports, have established a number of strong relationships with international cruise operators as well as with other
Tourism in Qatar
specialists involved in the industry. This has proved to be of great importance as Qatar benefitted from cruise ships during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, as a means of providing additional accommodation for fans and visitors. Two giant cruise ships served as floating hotels during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM at Doha Port. The cruise ships had a combined capacity of 4,000 rooms, which accommodated up to 9,400 people.
Cruise passengers can also avail the new transit visa. It includes the use of enhanced technology and close collaboration between cruise operators and security officials – a passenger manifest containing the passport details of passengers and crew will be shared with immigration officials 48 hours prior to a ship’s arrival in Qatar. This allows authorities to process all relevant information and clear passengers for entry before the ship's berthing, enabling travellers to disembark within minutes and begin on-shore excursions.
QT’s projections show continued growth in the cruise tourism industry over the coming years. With the completion of the Doha Port redevelopment, and the associated capacity increase, which allows the port to receive two megaships at once, Qatar
Qatar Tourism (QT)
is expected to attract 500,000 cruise tourists by 2026.
Next Chapter
On World Tourism Day 2017, held annually on 27 September, Qatar launched the Next Chapter of its National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, which charted the next five years of the tourism sector’s growth in Qatar. According to QT, the next chapter aims to attract 6 mn visitors to Qatar annually. It also aims to achieve a 72% occupancy rate across all hotel establishments, through a combination of increasing demand and diversifying the country’s tourist accommodation offering.
Visitor arrivals in Doha are projected to grow by 104% by 2025, making it the fastest-growing tourist destination among major cities worldwide. The city is expected to see more than 4.51 mn visitors in 2025.
Tourism is expected to play a greater role in Qatar’s economy as the sector’s share of the country’s GDP will be nearly QAR133.5 bn in 2028, reports the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Travel and tourism investment in Qatar may exceed QAR14.5 bn, or 4.2% of total investments in the country, in 2028. m
In 2018, The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued Decision No 74 of 2018 establishing Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC), cancelling QTA and the government committee to coordinate conferences and events. In 2021, Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) was renamed Qatar Tourism (QT). QT promotes Qatar as a destination around the world, through its destination branding, international representation and participation at trade shows, and by developing a rich calendar of festivals and events. QT is growing internationally with representative offices in London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Singapore and more cities. QT works in partnership with public and private stakeholders to achieve this mission by planning, regulating and promoting a sustainable and diverse tourism industry while perpetuating Qatar’s culture.
In 2014, Qatar launched the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy (QNTSS), which seeks to diversify the country’s tourism offering and increase the sector’s contribution to Qatar’s economy by 2030.
In 2016, Discover Qatar, the destination management company of Qatar Airways and partner of QT was established to advance Qatar as a premium tourist destination. discoverqatar.qa For more information, visit visitqatar.qa or qatartourism.com

The Keys of Gold
Les Clefs d'Or is an international network of professional hotel concierges with common interests and goals. All Concierge Clefs d’Or can be recognised by the golden crossed keys they display on the label of their uniforms – these are a symbol of guaranteed, quality service.
The association is non-profitable, non-political and non-religious – it is not a trade union. Rather, it is based on friendship between members with an enduring aim to assist international travellers and tourists. Members have their own unique combination of expertise and sources of inside information that allows them to accommodate all guest requests, from the mundane to the extraordinary.
A Short History
The first such concierge association evolved in 1929 when Pierre Quentin, Concierge at Hôtel Ambassador in Paris, and 10 of his fellow Parisian concierges realised that they could operate more effectively as a team than individually. They felt that by joining forces they could make their services more useful and indispensable.
Accordingly, on 27 November 1929, the founding General Assembly took place, which saw more than 100 members join. The two oldest associations are the French and the Swedish ones; Qatar and Macau are the newest members joining in 2014. Qatar was officially accepted in Les Clefs d’Or as the 44th Independent Country at the Union Internationale des Concierges d’Hôtels. The association now counts 44 Member Sections representing 80 countries and 536 locations around the globe with 4,000 members. Concierge members are primarily dedicated to the promotion and facilitation of travel and tourism. They
carry out a delicate balance between seeking out advancements in the travel and tourism industry, while also respecting the history and traditions of the hotel concierge profession.
A vital element of the association is being able to rely on an extensive and global network of acquaintances, friends, and colleagues in order to ensure that guests’ demands are met. Duties are handled with persistence, tenaciousness, and professionalism. Les Clefs d’Or Concierges have worked hard to obtain their keys, and the many years of hard work and training is shown in their ability to remain calm under all circumstances and their dedication to providing discreet and quality services to hotel guests and travellers.
Les Clefs d'Or in Qatar and the Middle East
In February 2014, Qatar was officially accepted as the 44th Independent Country Section to be a part of Union Internationale des Concierges d’Hotels (UICH). Les Clefs d’Or Qatar was formed in 2010 at the InterContinental Doha by Randy Santos who was the then Chief Concierge, and who is now Chief Concierge at Fairmont Doha. The group consists of 27 members from different nationalities and backgrounds, covering most hotels in Qatar. Their objectives are to provide a world-class concierge service, which includes recommending the most authentic experiences in Qatar, and the best places to visit. Duties also include daily tasks such as dealing with mail and messages, and organising travel plans.
Santos and his colleagues have helped to expand Les Clef d'Or in the Middle East. They assisted the concierge of the Sheraton Kuwait in establishing a Kuwait Hotels Concierge Group, with the eventual aim of becoming Les Clefs d’Or Kuwait. In addition to Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE, the Middle East is also home to many other Les Clefs d’Or, including Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt.
The Keys of Gold
Les Clefs d’Or Qatar Committee
Les Clef d'Or Qatar have different committees that serve not only their guests, but also the community by volunteering and donating whatever they can offer. Their Qatar Concierge Committee and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee have joined forces to host charity events such as the Donation Drive by Les Clefs d’Or Qatar. According to Les Clef d'Or Qatar, it does not only help those in need, but it can help promote a culture of giving and being a Les Clefs d’Or International Family, they firmly believe in that.
According to Randy, 'We also have scheduled to volunteer and set a date for Qatar Charity to help the community. We also help dog and cat shelters, and undertake beach cleaning activities as a Les Clefs d’Or. Enhancing the Concierge profession by providing an education day training, we do have different committees as follows: Executive, Qatar Concierge Society, Corporate Social Responsibility, Education, and Communications and Social Media.'
Monthly meetings are held, and they have launched the yearly International Concierge Workshop hosted by HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Fahad Al Thani, who is the primary supporter of the Les Clefs d’Or Qatar. Qatar Tourism, Katara Cultural Village, and the GMs of Qatar's hotels also support the society.

Hospitality Art
By Ola DiabArt is becoming an essential part of a hotel’s essence and décor with many hotels hiring curators to help them tell their story through art.
Experience the significant role art plays in the hospitality industry at Katara Towers. Symbolically intertwined with Qatar’s heritage, the iconic towers in Lusail City are an architectural translation of Qatar’s national seal, representing the traditional scimitar swords. The towers are home to Qatar’s newest and most luxurious hotels, Fairmont Doha and Raffles Doha, each arching skyward with dramatic poise, creating a sense of wonder with curated beauty that unfolds in every space with abundant masterful artistry.
As one of their many ways to give guests next-level hotel experiences, the hotels have invested greatly in art by being one of the few hotels in Qatar with an art curator, also known as a hotel curator, creating aesthetic spaces and forming lasting connections with guests.
The role of an art curator
Tal Danai is the art curator at Katara Towers.
‘The role of an art curator, being a relatively new discipline in hotel design, is still somewhat fluid. Some see that role as an offspring of interior design, with the responsibility of the art curator to decorate the space created by the designer,’ he said.
Danai is the founder and CEO of ArtLink, which he founded in 1996 to develop a pioneering global market segment for young and emerging art and make the art of our time available, accessible and affordable to the world. ‘For us, the art and craft selected for a project is a separate layer from those developed by architecture, interior design and the other disciplines contributing to a hotel's environment,’ he said.
stories. We form narratives based on the history and culture of a place or concoct original ones to stimulate and enhance a guest's experience,’ he said.
ArtLink offers professional art curation and provision expertise in the hospitality sector. It is now the leader in its market and has completed over 140 hotel and cruise ship projects worldwide. ‘We promote cultures and learn to speak specific brand language for each project. We team up with academic institutions for research of emotional and cognitive triggers and tap into the creativity of artists in a journey to layer more brushstrokes on our storied canvases. We challenge fabricators and technology providers to help us materialise our own imagination and that of the artists we engage. We conduct a symphony that comes to life when guests encounter the art and craft collections and are touched by them. We have the best job in the world,’ he said.
‘We challenge ourselves in researching each location with the aim of extracting its inherent natural
Art at Katara Towers
Katara Towers have abundant masterful Qatari artistry. ‘During our research for the Katara Towers project, a fascinating cultural phenomenon kept surfacing from the materials. The Qatari people have for centuries been "Trades of Cultures",’ said Danai, adding that the over-arching curatorial framework rests on the idea of ‘Trades of Cultures’ or ‘Trading Cultures’. From that narrative, they have branched out into related narratives and have focused elements of the collection on specific areas that feature their own stories.
‘The unique position on the Silk Route and the reliance on pearling and the pearl trade have brought many a people from many cultures to Qatar. The locals have embraced the objects and stories brought over by foreigners, reworked them into their culture, their arts and their crafts and in turn, released the outcome back to the world,’ said Danai.
‘That fascinating phenomenon of an almost secluded culture that hosts and accepts others, that is curious to encounter other cultures, and which feels comfortable reprocessing what comes its way, was the pillar to the curatorial narrative we have developed for the project,’ he said.
Art at Katara Towers features a rich and versatile art collection with artwork in a variety of media, including paintings, ceramics, sculptures, glass and more by more than 120 local and international artists. From Qatar, you will see the work of wellknown local artists Aziza Iqbal, Shua’a Ali and Noor Abuissa. International artists include Natalie Blake, Kati Junger, Marie Andree Cote, Mattia Bosco, Jesus Perea, Ali Almasri, Omar Safa, Chris Wood and more.
As guests visit Fairmont Doha and Raffles Doha at Katara Towers, make sure to take in the art around you. ‘I would love guests to pay attention, appreciate, have an alternative look at the rich culture they are visiting and walk away with memories they can re-visit of a unique cultural
experience,’ said Danai. To achieve that coherent narrative sharing, the front of house staff is trained to talk about the art and engage with guests.
The Managing Director of Raffles and Fairmont Doha at Katara Towers, Christian Hirt, said, ‘Art is an integral part of the essence and décor of the two hotels, allowing them to tell their story and create memorable experiences for guests.
At Katara Towers, the architectural translation of Qatar’s national seal symbolically intertwines with the country’s heritage. With the expertise of a hotel curator, the hotels have invested greatly in art, creating aesthetic spaces and forming lasting connections with guests. The art collection at Katara Towers features a diverse range of media by local and international artists, showcasing Qatar’s rich culture. Through engaging with the art, guests can have a unique cultural experience and create lasting memories.’
In collaboration with Katara Towers, ArtLink will produce a film and book about the art collection at Fairmont Doha and Raffles Doha, featuring some of the artists, their artwork and stories.

The role of art in the hospitality industry
A great first impression is key, and art can play a significant role in doing just that. Today, many hotels are understanding that art can play an important role in leaving guests with a lasting impression. ‘Far are the days since hotels may have seen themselves as places to sleep and maybe eat. Hotels today are experiential, they compete with one another to better understand and anticipate guests' needs, whims and wishes and provide beyond what those may be,’ said Danai. ‘Guests have become accustomed to expecting more of their hotel experiences. As guests, we became more sensitive, more demanding and harder to please. Comparing experiences has become the norm. Personal research has become easier and much more accurate.’
According to Danai, art curators at hotels are tasked with adding local cultural layers, supporting brand values, providing moments of inner reflections, and creating memory anchors guests will take away with them to revisit their experiences.
In addition to Raffles Doha and Fairmont Doha at Katara Towers, there are many other hotels and resorts in Qatar that create aesthetic spaces with art to enhance the guest experience, including Abesq Doha Hotel and Residences; Fuwairit Kite Beach (FKB); InterContinental Doha The City; Le Méridien City Center Doha; Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha; Mondrian Doha; Pullman Doha West Bay; The Ned Doha; Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha; W Doha Hotel & Residences; and more.
