Tourism in Qatar

Qatar offers a wide range of authentic tourism experiences, in addition to hosting close to 80 sporting events annually, and is the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM and the 2023 FINA World Swimming Championships.

Tourist arrivals

In 2022, Qatar's tourism sector grew siginificantly, mostly due to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, which took place from 20 November to 18 December 2022 and welcomed 1.2 mn international visitors.

Boosting tourism

A range of visa measures announced by Qatar Tourism (QT), formerly known as Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), have been widely welcomed by tourism industry professionals, as well as the country’s hospitality and retail operators.

The introduction of the free, 96-hour transit visa and +Qatar (an initiative to promote Qatar as a stopover destination by QT and Qatar Airways) has resulted in bringing close to 200,000 visitors to Qatar.

In August 2017, Qatar introduced visa waivers for citizens of more than 95 countries. Since inception, at least 275,000 visitors have entered Qatar visa-free.

In 2022–23, Qatar introduced digital Hayya Card, the fan identification and an entry permit into Qatar during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, resulted in bringing 1.2 mn international visitors to Qatar. Qatar is the safest country in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by Country 2023. Doha is ranked as the second safest city in the world, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2023. In recent years, Qatar and its capital city Doha have continued to retain their global distinction as one of the safest countries in the world. Qatar has taken the title as the world's safest country at least five times on Numbeo – first in 2017, then every year from 2019 to 2023. Qatar has been named the safest Arab country since 2015.

Doha has been named among the top cities to live in, according to the World Best Cities 2023 rankings by Resonance Consultancy, a leading global advisor on placemaking, branding and marketing for the world’s best cities, districts, developments and destinations.

The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism named Doha as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2023 during its 25th session at the Arab League General Secretariat in December 2022.

Visitor arrivals from the GCC were 244,261 (40%); followed by Europe at 103,067 (17%); Asia including Oceania at 99,638 (16%); Arab countries at 87,916 (14%); the Americas at 68,422 (11%); and African countries at 10,308 (2%).

Top 10 source markets by arrivals in 2022: Saudi Arabia at 595,000 (23%), India at 273,000 (11%), the US at 107,000 (4%), Kuwait at 107,000 (4%), the UAE at 67,000 (3%), and France at 48,000 (2%).

Hotel and hotel apartment performance

Qatar’s hospitality sector witnessed a strong growth with hotels across segments seeing an increase in occupancy rates in 2022. Two and onestar hotels recorded the highest occupancy rate.

At least 40 new hotels opened in Qatar in 2022. The overall supply of hotel keys reached approximately 37,000 keys ahead of the World Cup, which represented a 125% increase in less than 10 years. The overall average room rates (ARR) for November and December 2022 were QAR3,140 and QAR2,610 respectively. Both months recorded more than a 300% increase.

The country's overall hospitality sector saw a 285.84 y-o-y surge in average revenue per available room (RevPAR) to QAR1,281 in December 2022 as ARR increased to 328.4% to QAR2,112.

This upward trend in the hospitality sector’s room yield comes amid a 317.6% y-o-y surge in visitor arrivals to 613,612 in December 2022 with the majority coming from the GCC.

Cruise industry

Qatar’s tourism sector is witnessing a further boost from the busy 2022–23 cruise season as mega cruise ships and cruise liners such as AIDAcosma, Costa Toscana, Emerald Azzurra, Le Bougainville MSC World Europa, Mein Schiff 6, Ocean Odyssey, and more make maiden and return visits to Doha Port.

ships with approximately 200,000 visitors until the end of the 2022–23 cruise season in April 2023.

Over the past few years, QT has established a number of strong relationships with international cruise operators as well as with other specialists involved in the industry. This has proved to be of great importance as Qatar benefitted from cruise ships during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, as a means of providing additional accommodation for fans and visitors. Two giant cruise ships served as floating hotels during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM at Doha Port. The cruise ships had a combined capacity of 4,000 rooms, which accommodated up to 9,400 people.

Cruise passengers can also avail of the new transit visa. As part of the new operating procedure –which includes the use of enhanced technology and close collaboration between cruise operators and security officials – a passenger manifest containing the passport details of passengers and crew will be shared with immigration officials 48 hours prior to a ship’s arrival in Qatar. This will allow the authorities to process all relevant information and clear passengers for entry before the ship's berthing, enabling travellers to disembark within minutes and begin on-shore excursions.

QT’s projections show continued growth in the cruise tourism industry over the coming years. With the completion of the Doha Port redevelopment, and the associated capacity increase, which allows the port to receive two megaships at once, Qatar is expected to attract 500,000 cruise tourists by 2026.

Next Chapter

On World Tourism Day 2017, held annually on 27 September, Qatar launched the Next Chapter of its National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, which charts the next five years of the tourism sector’s growth in Qatar.

According to QT, the next chapter aims to attract 6 mn visitors to Qatar annually by this year. It also aims to achieve a 72% occupancy rate across all hotel establishments, through a combination of increasing demand and diversifying the country’s tourist accommodation offering.

Visitor arrivals in Doha are projected to grow by 104% by 2025, making it the fastest-growing tourist destination among major cities worldwide. The city is expected to see more than 4.51 mn visitors in 2025.

Tourism is expected to play a greater role in Qatar’s economy as the sector’s share of the country’s GDP will be nearly QAR133.5 bn in 2028, reports the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Travel and tourism investment in Qatar may exceed QAR14.5 bn, or 4.2% of total investments in the country, in 2028.

Qatar Tourism (QT)

In November 2018, The Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued Decision No 74 of 2018 establishing Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC), cancelling QTA and the government committee to coordinate conferences and events. In 2021, Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) was renamed Qatar Tourism (QT).

QT promotes Qatar as a destination around the world, through its destination branding, international representation and participation at trade shows, and by developing a rich calendar of festivals and events. QT is growing internationally with representative offices in London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Singapore and more cities.

In 2014, Qatar launched the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy (QNTSS), which seeks to diversify the country’s tourism offering and increase the sector’s contribution to Qatar’s economy by 2030.

MEET THE GM Roger Saad

General Manager of Park Hyatt Doha

Marhaba interviews Roger Saad, the General Manager of Park Hyatt Doha since December 2021.

Tell us more about your career in hospitality?

I started my hospitality career in Lebanon after getting my BA in Business Administration with an internship at the hotel Sofitel Le Gabriel in Beirut. This internship gave me the desire and love for hospitality. Being half Romanian-half Lebanese, I had the taste of travelling and discovering different cultures and backgrounds since a young age. This further contributed to my decision to pursue a career in this fantastic industry, so I decided to take an MBA in Hospitality Management in France to hone my skills and learn more.

I started working in the GCC, specifically in Qatar in 2004–05 at the Diplomatic Club. Being passionate about hotels, I wanted to rejoin an international hotel chain so I took a role at the Hyatt Regency Dubai in 2005 as Associate Director of Sales. Three years after, I had the opportunity to join the Concorde Hotel & Resorts Group in Paris as Director of Sales, where I was in charge of royal families, the GCC business for their portfolio, hotels such as Le Crillon, Hotel Le Martinez in Cannes, and Concorde La Fayette among others. After Paris, I received an offer from the Four Seasons Hotel Beirut to join as Director of Sales.

I went back to Hyatt in 2014 with the Park Hyatt Dubai as Director of Sales and Marketing, and after a year and a half was promoted to EAM Sales and Marketing, and later acting GM. After Dubai, a Hotel Manager post opened at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome, one of our flagship in the company, and I took the opportunity. Tell us what a normal day is like for a GM of a luxury five-star hotel.

I start my day at the hotel at 8 am where I meet with my leadership team, and then I do one-on-one meetings. I then proceed to tour the hotel checking the venues and the spa, and attend several in-house meetings.

As my background is in Sales and Marketing, I love meeting guests and always take the opportunity to get guest feedback for us to always improve and get things right. It is very important as well to meet accounts and feel the pulse of what is happening around and to help my Sales team convert more business.

I am also a very family-oriented person, I love to spend time with my daughter and my wife, so I always make sure to have breakfast with my family, and I try to leave work at 7 pm. During weekends, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and exploring new places in Doha.

You have worked in Doha before, some years ago –how do you feel the hotel landscape has changed?

I worked in Qatar in 2004 to 2005 at the Diplomatic Club, owned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Our only competitors back then were the Ritz-Carlton, Intercontinental and Sheraton. Now, all the big names and key players in the industry are in Qatar, so the market has changed drastically and the competition now is really fierce.

What plans do you have for the hotel this year and beyond?

We have lots of plans for this fantastic hotel. In 2022, it was all about having the right people at the right place and focusing primarily on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, which the team executed superbly. In 2023, the focus will be on providing tailor-made experiences across the board and in everything that we do, and curating long-lasting memories for guests and their families. We will also continue to focus on our teams by identifying talents and unleashing potentials.

Cyril Mouawad

Multi-Property GM of Two Marriott Properties

Cyril Mouawad has been appointed as the MultiProperty General Manager of Marriott Marquis City Center Doha and Marriott Executive Apartments City Center Doha. He will overlook the operations of both properties.

The two properties feature a combined portfolio of over 800 rooms, 12 dining destinations, extensive conference and banqueting facilities, including a fully equipped outdoor catering division, spa, gym and various leisure facilities.

Cyril joined Marriott International in the early part of 2022 as the pre-opening Hotel Manager for Le Meridien City Center Doha. Under his leadership, the hotel successfully opened on 30 October 2022 in preparation for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The hotel performed above expectations and exceeded its target.

Cyril is no stranger to Doha as he adorned several roles with different brands in Qatar in his enviable career. An alumnus of Notre Dame University, he graduated in Business Administration and Economics with a specialisation in Hotel Management and Tourism. He has over 24 years of professional hospitality experience.

After making his mark as Director of Sales and Marketing with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Beirut, Bahrain and Doha, Cyril moved up the ranks swiftly to hold several roles including Hotel Manager for InterContinental Doha, Pre-Opening General Manager for Staybridge Suites Doha and General Manager for Holiday Inn Hotel & Residences Kuwait.

According to Marriott International Vice President, Qatar Stefan Kuehr, they are thrilled to announce the promotion of one of their brightest young talents from

A Nod to the Past at The Ned Hotel

There was a huge buzz in town when The Ned Doha opened its doors in Qatar recently.

This is the third Ned hotel and members’ club, and its first location in the Middle East. The Ned was created in 2017 by Soho House Founder, Nick Jones. The company expanded in 2022 to include The Ned NoMad in New York and in 2023 with The Ned Doha.

Every property is slightly different depending on its location, as the architecture and interior design reflect the period and style of the original building. However, those familiar with The Ned’s other properties will recognise features like Cecconi’s restaurant, the circular stage in the central atrium, and the rich green marble from Tinos.

This third Ned property is in the former site of the Ministry of Interior, set across five floors overlooking the Arabian Gulf and Doha’s famous skyline, as well as Al Bidda Park and the Amiri Diwan. There are 90 bedrooms and suites, seven public restaurants, a pool and club lounge, a health club with spa, salon, and fitness centre, and a new 775 sq m event space for conferences, events and receptions.

‘Five years after launching The Ned in London, we are excited to open in Doha. The Ned Doha has seen much interest in the property from Qatari citizens who either worked at the former Ministry of Interior themselves, or knew family members who did. It has become quite popular for locals to want to see where their old office was and what it looks like now!

Meanwhile long-term expats have also been fascinated in the building’s transformation for the austere government building of yesteryear to the opulent hotel of today.

The transformation of the building

The Ministry of Interior building was designed in the 1960s by Lebanese architect William Sednaoui, and was redesigned by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin with interiors by Soho House Design. Many of the original features have been kept to reflect the historical importance of the property, and aligns with Qatar’s mission to preserve, modernise and repurpose its significant buildings.

One of the property’s most notable architectural attributes is the podium surrounding the building, which creates a relaxed and inviting public space with shade, greenery – and of course, superb views of Doha Corniche and Al Dafna.

Guests enter the building via a huge set of stairs, and are greeted by sculptures, a water feature and a striking concrete pergola. The building’s interiors are inspired by 1970s glamour with terrazzo flooring, silk curtains and marble furniture. Influenced by The Ned’s original address in London, there is a live performance stage beneath an enormous atrium surrounded by restaurants and rich green marble sourced from the Greek island of Tinos.

Guests have a number of indoor-outdoor spaces to enjoy. A new annex to the original building has dramatically increased the footprint of the property, and houses the Corniche Hall. In between the two buildings, guests can wander through a beautifully landscaped area, with water features, plants, flowers, and the pool. It is quite a surprise to find this private green oasis in central Doha.

Luxury awaits in the rooms and suites

The bedrooms are also inspired by the 1970s and range from Cosy to Large, each with balconies offering city or sea views. Many feature the original coffered concrete ceilings, now fully restored.

The nod to 1970s glamour continues with curated drinks cabinets, glass chandeliers, silk-covered ottomans, period vanity desks, marble-clad bathrooms, rainforest showers and freestanding clawfoot bathtubs in Large bedrooms.

The 12 suites are ideal for longer stays and larger parties, with views of the Amiri Diwan, the Arabian Gulf, or Al Bidda Park. Interior design details include mirrored headboards, reflective surfaces, walk-in wardrobes with dressing tables, period walnut coffee tables and wingback armchairs, bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs, and walk-in showers.

It is all most luxurious, and attention to detail doesn’t stop there! Rooms and suites are sumptuously decorated with period radios, vintage telephones, and chic glass and silverware. In fact, you won’t find your usual technological wizardry at The Ned: televisions are hidden away, light switches and bathroom taps are retro brass fixtures. The only visible nod to the current era is the air conditioning panel.

Food and beverage options

The Ned Doha has seven restaurants to satisfy all palates:

• Cecconi’s – Northern Italian classics from the open kitchen

• Kaia – Pan-Asian cuisine with signature dishes from Southeast Asia and Hawaii

• Electric Diner – a casual restaurant offering American staples

• Nickel Lounge – classic drinks with seating centred around the live performance stage

• Millie’s Grill – a European brasserie with vintage-style interiors that serves afternoon tea

• Hadika – al fresco Levantine cuisine

• Malibu Kitchen – California-inspired favourites by the pool and air-conditioned all year

Members only

The members’ club experience is a first in Qatar, and gives members access to the facilities and events at all three properties. At The Ned Doha is Ned’s Club Pool, a 30 m outdoor pool with private cabanas, terrazzo flooring, and green and white striped daybeds. On the rooftop, Ned’s Club Upstairs (left) is a warm and welcoming lounge with wood, touches of gold, statement furniture, and views of the bay and the Amiri Diwan, and a private room on the rooftop, seating up to 12 guests.

Wellness at The Ned

Also on the top floor is Ned’s Club Spa, offering members and hotel guests a number of treatments as well as sauna, steam room, and traditional Hammam. Ned’s Club Spa also has treatment rooms for barber services, hairdressing, manicures and pedicures. The Ned’s Club Gym is a fitness and studio space with state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes, and a separate, private gym space for women.

Meet Me in Doha

The Corniche Hall event space (right) has its own private entrance, arranged around a landscaped courtyard, and can cater up to 600 people for conferences, receptions, and other events. There is a balcony with additional outdoor event space, and the balcony overlooking the main stage can accommodate up to 40 guests for a standing reception.

Art Collection

The extensive collection of original artworks is by 95 artists, 61 based in Doha and 70% of whom are female. Commissioned by Wadha Al Aqeedi and Elina Sairanen, the co-founders of Mathqaf, the collection features more than 350 works using a multitude of media – textile, painting and sculpture – and covers themes including identity, history, culture, globalisation, and ecology. Many of the artists drew inspiration from the modernist building and its location.

Keys of Luxury to a Luxurious Qatar

Qatar is expected to have approximately 40,000 hotel keys by the end of 2023.

Although Qatar opened more than 40 new hotels for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, 2023 is to see yet more new hotels opening as the country is becoming one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

A look back at 2022

Qatar’s hotel revenues shot up in 2022 thanks to the month-long World Cup. The country, which was the first in the Arab and Muslim world to host the global showpiece, recorded the second-highest increase in hotel revenues globally, beaten only by Miami. Qatar’s gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR) indexed at 152%, and leveled at USD68.07 for the year.

According to consultancy firm ValuStrat, at least 46 hotels opened in 2022, comprising at least 9,000 keys. An estimated 62% are in the 5-star category. Lusail City and West Bay comprised 40% of the total hotel rooms.

The new hotels opened to accommodate the teams and fans of the World Cup, which took place from 20 November to 18 December 2022. At least 3.4 mn spectators attended the popular tournament, including 1.2 mn international visitors equalling 96.33% of the total occupancy for the tournament. Total international arrivals for November 2022 clocked in at 573,000, a 412% year-on-year (Y-O-Y) increase. December welcomed 614,000, a 318% Y-O-Y increase.

Additionally, there was a rise in the average daily rates (ADRs). The ADR in November 2022 was QAR577, 38% higher Y-O-Y. The occupancy levels reached 56% in November. December 2022 saw higher occupancies of 61%. December saw record ADRs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) levels. ADR averaged QAR2,112 and RevPAR QAR1,281.

Qatar will have approximately 40,000 hotel keys by the end of 2023, if all projects are delivered on time, according to ValuStrat.

An estimated 5 bn people from around the world watched the World Cup matches, which according to ValuStrat, will attract at least 40 mn people to visit Qatar in the medium to long term.

The hospitality sector is expected to see additional notable 5-star hotels including:

• Located on Dafna Street in West Bay, Andaz Doha will mark the debut of the brand in Qatar, a luxury lifestyle brand of the Hyatt family. Andaz properties are vibrant boutique hotels and resorts which immerse the guest in the local culture through different touch points from cuisine to design, music and more. The property features 256 rooms, 32 suites, four Royal suites, and 56 residences in addition to three distinctive dining concepts, The Salt Road, Mr. and Mrs. Hawker and Mumble Jungle, along with spa and recreational facilities.

• Located in Qetaifan Island North in Lusail City, Rixos Qetaifan Island North Doha will offer guests a luxurious getaway to an island packed with entertainment and adventure. With five acres of fun-filled attractions, including the upcoming sensational Meryal Waterpark, private beach, retail area and numerous fine dining and casual restaurants, Rixos Qetaifan Island North Doha will be the ultimate multi-inclusive vacation destination.

• Located in Ras Bu Abboud, NH Collection Oasis Doha Hotel will feature a selection of signature food and beverage venues, including restaurants with indoor and al fresco seating, two lounges and a relaxing pool bar. Other hotel facilities will include a fully-equipped fitness centre, a kids’ club, NH Collection Spa, four padel courts and a relaxing rooftop lounge with impressive views of Doha skyline.

• In Lusail City, two striking towers inspired by the coral reefs in the seas surrounding Qatar will house Rosewood Doha and Rosewood Residences Doha. Rosewood Doha will consist of an ultra-luxury

hotel with 185 exquisite guestrooms and suites, and offer guests a collection of eight innovative outlets, including a bistro, lobby lounge, coffee shop/deli, three speciality restaurants, cigar lounge and a lifestyle entertainment lounge. The hotel will also feature a 1,500 sq m ballroom, Sense, A Rosewood Spa, a fitness centre featuring state-ofthe-art training equipment, Rosewood’s signature Manor Club executive lounge concept and more.

Rosewood Residences Doha will introduce luxurious 300 for-sale residential apartments and 173 serviced apartments for longer-term stays. The residences will be complete with bespoke amenities, facilities and services to create the world’s pinnacle of private luxury living and contemporary style in Qatar.

• The 42-storey Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, which is managed by Hilton worldwide, will be located on Dafna Street in West Bay. The hotel will offer panoramic views of the city and Arabian Gulf, featuring 250 spacious guest rooms and suites, and 80 large serviced apartments. Amenities will include a roof top pool and a two-storey health club and spa, a palatial ballroom, state-of-the-art meeting and conference facilities and a wide range of destination bars and restaurants.

• Set to open in Porto Arabia in The Pearl Island, Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The PearlQatar is a glamorous beachfront home, offering a new Four Seasons experience in Doha with residential comfort in expansive apartments and residences, each with a full kitchen and breathtaking views of the city or sea. Connect to the lively social scene at their seven restaurants and bars, soon to showcase Joël Robuchon, and enrich your lifestyle at their Loulou Spa, the beach and pools.

This year also saw the opening of a few new 4-star hotels including Terminal Inn Al Mansoura (Terminal Inn By Edar City Centre already opened in 2022) and Gloria Hotel & Suites Doha.
