SHORT PROJECTS

A pot made of plaster An exploration of plaster. Layers of plaster mixed with paint. A normal pot is the inside, a plastic bag is the outside. The shape is a result of the unplanned.

PROCESS:

7

Reptile in ceramic The task was to make a shape in ceramic, out of a word. My word was “reptile.

A game controller Four days project on making a working controller with an arduino microcontroller. With Line Moen.

A simple controller for a simple arcade game named / ESCAPE \. You jump by pushing left or right side of the computer.

LONGER PROJECTS

Chess for children A group project with Cecilie Liset & Caroline Myre. Second year, spring 2013.

The task was to give form to chess pieces for children. The shape had to follow the rules of items produced by injection moulding. We got trained in 3D CAD software Catia & Solid Works, and made iterations of prototypes with rapid prototyping (SLS & FDM printers).

?

We wanted to reveal the real personality behind each chess piece. What kind of Queen is she? What kind of personality does the knight have? For this reason we have analysed and discovered their real attributes - the associating stereotype.

L AZY POWERFUL IMPORTANT UNEMOTIONAL The King 14

BOLD THE BEST DOMINANT PROTECTING The Queen

In the beginning of the process we got influenced by the Pop Art movement from the 1950’s. Later we focused more on finding the essence of each and one. Like the Pawn: it is the most numerous piece in the game and in most circumstances the weakest. Historically it represents infantry - so why can’t just the Pawn be an arm who is ready to fight? Underneath is a few rapid sketches on different assosiation the pieces may give.

15

Learning the 3D printer

Some form explorations in plasticene and then 3D printed iterations. We worked a lot between shapes by hand and test printing in 3D. The final result was SLS printed and lacquered.

16

SKETCHES & ITERATIONS

The King: Passive as a chair, but still powerful.

The Queen: You don’t want to mess with her!

17

SKETCHES & ITERATIONS

The Bishop:

A bit sneaky. It moves where the tip of the boots points. He might be an agent?

The Pawn: hardworking army

The Rook is an eye - representing the protecting. The Knight is a leg - representing the sportiness.

18

FINAL RESULT

We let the kids play - and they really enjoyed it a lot! They even made other characters with the pieces that was out of the game. That’s really a nice unexpected situation we didn’t predict.

iPhone cover Second year, spring 2013.

The task was to make a personalized phone cover with additive manufacturing. Lots of training in 3D CAD programme Catia.

?

Most people would say that a covers purpose is to protect the phone. But it’s also a result of personal expression - what kind of cover you have, reflect you. But also it is placed on an other product - like the iPhone. And most of the covers totally crash with the look of the iPhone itself. I want to make a cover that reflect the iPhone aesthetically. And cross some assumptions.

Where does your hand touch the iPhone?

22

Areas you don’t want to hide

I looked at the iPhone as an empty canvas. By pointing out areas I wanted to hide and show, I drew lines between them. “Here it has to be open, and here you wuold like it to be nice to hold.” The final shape is a result of this experimenting.

FINAL RESULT

This cover is designed with the same “visual language” as the iPhone, and doesn’t try to be crazy or funny. It’s a cover that is meant to fit the iPhone and make it look even better than it already looks. It’s not a bulletproof cover who protects your iPhone from water and fire. It’s a cover that makes your iPhone stand out.

A flower vase Third year, autumn 2013. The brief: Everything was better before? In this project we were suppose to question this typical expression (often old) people say. I did a lot of reaserch on old traditonal handcrafting techniques. In these days it is a lot of focus on old handcraft and materials. Which is an interesting discussion.

Rosemaling is a decorative painting techI have therefore based my project around

I wanted to digg deeper on the history of

Here is some of the test painting I did. When you paint Rosemaling, different colors are mixed together in a specific way. This i tried to learn just to get the feeling of what it is about. I then imagined how these strokes would look like if it was translated to an actuall 3d object. What if some of the forms over was a vase. How is the flowers placed in then? I started sketching, and made some mockups in paper.

27

After testing out different shapes I started drawing the shape in Catia, The result is 3D printed because of the difficult shape and because ot the fine meeting with old tradition and new techonology. 28

FINAL RESULT

The flower vase is made in the SLS printer sith nylon powder. After it is colored in textile color. The color blue is used because it was very often seen i Rosemaling. The idea is that the flowers you put in this vase will remind of real-flower-rosemaling. And the vase itself may remind of layering in the strokes. But most important is the fact that the aestethically look is not Rosemaling-style, neither “Scandinavian design nor the 3D printing look.

This project was also about branding, so the following is the logo process. It got the name "Bevart" which means "Preserved"

33

I made a report about the project. Here you can see the moodboard, logo process and personas

I’ve made a film about the process, you find it here: https://vimeo.com/89087555
