+ Not only is devWorks difficult to find without previous knowledge of its existence or a direct link, but it is also not very welcoming to new users. + Home page is a bit cluttered & confusing and there’s no direction or explanations provided for newbies.

+ Successful digital communities usually have some sort of welcoming gesture and introduction to the site and its capabilities to offer the new user. + DevWorks should focus attention on garnering new users in order to establish a stronger community base.

+ New users may feel overwhelmed or intimidated as they enter a new digital community. + A successful site requires a welcoming attitude and elements that pique and hold users’ interest. When do community feel like they belong? As a newbie, I would like to find a community with which I can identify. When do community members feel connected? As a newbie, I would like to gain followers/friends.

+ New users tend to browse a website to understand its content and use before committing to join the community (i.e. creating an account). + DevWorks could be better designed to accommodate this curious exploration and immediately showcase the benefits of joining the community. + Newbies visiting the site can see who is a trusted voice. + Gives a more logical flow to the community and brings more users straight to the homepage, not just from google searches. It also eliminates spam from the DevWorks community. + Newbies can see a logical progression into becoming a potential advocate for the community. + “We want users to see what the latest trends are, what kinds of new technology are emerging, or just to see what’s out there.” + Upon first sight, user is able to see that this is a full, active community that can be relevant and useful to him + User feels like he has found and is welcomed in a new community that he can revisit to give or receive trusted advice, tips, or feedback

+ Voting system allows users to have a voice in which content is valuable and to strive for recognition from other users + Indication of user interests and contributions allows him to connect with like-minded users and be seen as an authority on certain topics + Placing emphasis on user photo and interests allows for a more personal, user-focused environment
