Dramatic Throwback
Dramatic Throwback Whether its from the 1990’s or the dawn of time, references to history are consuming society. With technology and general cultural advancement, there is a resurgence of old looks, gadgets, and style with a new and dramatic flare. Cinematic icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly are living on as people recreate them in film, books, and attitude. Primal hunter-gatherer mentality continues to dominate the urban environment, lending those involved to a bold, primitive style. The JPEG Generation that is growing into adulthood has the technological means and creative spirit to revive any “retro” idea into a stylish trademark of current times. Learning and veering away from previous trends highlighting “airbrushed” or unnatural beauty, the natural and confident style is resurfacing with gusto. The distant past is not the only focus for 2012 trends, but the immediate past as well. Inspired by the right-now, designers create hybrid apparel ranging from sustainability trends to utilizing outer garment design for undergarments. Lingerie is the basis for all design as it is the base garment put on before and other in an outfit. Trends in fashion rely on trends in lingerie, and therefore trend predictions for undergarments are important to keep up with.

Bordelle Spring/Summer 2011 Collection
When it comes to lingerie trends, it seems only natural to take inspiration from the ancient and tribal cultures of society. Drawing on the most extreme category of historical fashion, primitive tribal wear is being revived in the lingerie trends predicted for S/S season 2012. The basis for the apparel that these cultures wore is the bare minimum, emphasizing decoration and tribal design over coverage and support. Detailing seen throughout this historic inspiration consists of chains, beads, fringe, and straps. These same details are progressively edging their way back into current lingerie styling and will really heighten as we reach 2012. We are beginning to see lingerie take shape in primitive strap or harness designs, bead work intricately decorating the female form, and fringed lacing draped over the body. Predictions for S/S 2012 emphasize the drama and primitive look inspired by these cultures, but utilize the advancements made in garment design to create more clean cut and decorative lingerie looks.

Sisley for Spring 2009
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the film icons of the 1900’s would be very flattered by the trends in lingerie over the next few years. Stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Farrah Fawcet, Betty Davis, and Grace Kelly are known for both their on screen work as well as their iconic style. The sleek yet modest for present day lingerie styles worn by these famous stars are on the rise. The vintage glamour look associated with the actors makes emulating them today very popular. Lately we have been seeing trends in lingerie lending themselves to satin draped just snug enough over the female form to invite ideas of sexuality, while still leaving some things to the imagination. Dainty bows placed on the 1950’s slip skirt, or lace trim at the feminine neckline of a satin camisole are details that bring to life the ideas of what these style icons would wear as lingerie if they were around today. Predictions for the S/S 2012 year anticipate heightening the drama even more. This style will continue to stay sexy but modest, and increase the intrigue through lace, bows, and ruched detailing to increase the femininity of the pieces.

JPEG Gen.
The JPEG Generation is all about advanced technology, and the wave of graphics, colors, and freedoms that it brings in. When relating to fashion, the JPEG Gen. idea comes across as bold surges of colors and prints that overstimulate the mind, just as the amount of technology overstimulates young minds. Metallics also lend themselves to this trend style as they bring in the futuristic mechanical aspect of JPEG Gen. design. We have been seeing a growing number of prints and cut-outs in the lingerie industry in recent years. In addition to this, lingerie is veering away from standard black, red, blush, white, and nude color schemes to embrace the bold in-your-face colors of the younger generation, Where is this trend going? In S/S 2012 even more of the lingerie wearing population will be part of the JPEG Gen. and will be expecting to see this trend blossom into its full overstimulated potential. In addition to print and color, texture and volume will be showing up, incorporating the 3-D crazes seen in the media and tech worlds. Lingerie will move from subtle to bold stimulation.-

We have all heard of wearing underwear as outer wear, as was popular in the 1990’s but what about the flip side? Lingerie lines have recently been incorporating trends of outer wear as underwear. Lace blouses that would easily be layered into a casual wear or date night outfit are inspiring lingerie tops. Similarly, the tunics and shirt dresses that have grown in the outerwear industry over the past few years are now seeping into lingerie trends. Traditionally lingerie separates itself from outerwear by incorporating some sheer or lacy textiles, however, trends are showing lingerie such as slips, tanks, and nighties are becoming almost indistinguishable from the skirts and blouses they are layered under. Predictions for the 2012 seasons show that the line between underwear and outerwear will continue to blur. Tunics and shirt dresses will transition almost completely from outerwear to lingerie. Lace or sheer blouses will be able to be worn in either category, layered in different ways.

Natural Drama Naory Lingerie by Christies 2009
Daxon Lingerie 2010 (France)
The body is a natural canvas for lingerie. Under garments are becoming more and more like the body’s accessory, where the real statement piece is simply the female figure. Instead of shaping, pushing, and adding to the body, lingerie is embracing the natural shape of a woman. The industry is showing bras, teddies, and panties that have less padding and shaping material, allowing for the woman’s natural curve to show through. If not to support, then what is lingerie’s purpose? In the case of this trend, it is to dramatize the visual. Delicate lace creates just enough drama so see some but not all of the skin beneath it, and higher rising panties lay on the body’s curves, leaving the natural figure undisturbed. As far as predictions for 2012, we can look forward to and increase in barely-there lingerie made for acessorizing the body it is on. Bras with no padding or coverage and possibly no underwire will emerge as the trend continues to rise in popularity. The more confident the woman is in her own body, the more likely she will take to this trend of naturally dramatic undergarments.
