letter from the editor

Christie’s Love

I

believe that beauty is at its very height in the simplest form. Purity is a form of being strong in your most simplistic of states. When I think of something “pure”, I think of it as being “strong” “un-mixed”, “true”.

I find myself most comfortable when I am sure of myself and dwelling in my confidence and my own skin...in the strength of knowing my own worth and value. I do believe that there is a time to get dolled up and adorn ourselves in beautiful clothes and makeup. There is also a very strong sense in my bones of when to keep it simple and real. That is in my physical representation as well as my state of mind. There is a beauty in being comfortable with me as a woman, a mother, a person that has been entrusted in my soul and my skin.

I am hopeful that women all over will feel empowered by the strength of their own mind and the beauty of their own skin. All we can be is ourselves because, as it has been wisely stated, everybody else is already taken. If there are things you would like to improve about yourself - like maybe your health, patience, or relationships - I am encouraging to the utmost. Otherwise, I encourage you to be happy just as you are! Enjoy your journey; love heavy; forgive easy and remember to take photographs along the way.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN

LUCK OR DESTINY?

LUCK

DESTINY

According to the dictionary luck is defined as (noun) success or failure apparently brought about by chance rather than through one’s own actions. Wikipedia says the “definition of luck varies by philosophical, religious, mystical, or emotional context of one interpreting it; accorging to the classic Noah Webster’s dictionary it is “a purposeless, unpredictible and uncontrollable force that shapes events...”

VS

Destiny (noun), according to the web, is defined as “the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future. Fate. Something that is to happen or has happened to a particular person or thing; lot or fortune. This power is said to be personified or represented as a goddess.” Destiny can often be that reward of hard work and investment. Your payoff that you have been working so hard for.

We each have our own beliefs and ways we think of how life flows for us. Some are based very heavily on our religious beliefs and in living good and righteous. Another very big element is that you too, personally have a part in all of this. When you want something worth having in your life, you know that you must work very hard to achieve this. Whether that be professionally and/or personally. At work, we put in extra time and hours to boost our careers. We work hard at our craft continually growing and becoming proficient and a skilled pro at what we do - no matter how long we’ve been at this. The same goes for our personal relationships. We can’t let those fall by the way side. They too take time, energy and investment. For a plant to grow and flourish, it needs water and care. The same is true for relationships as well as career advancements. It is probably not wise to assume that professional and personal relationships will grow if you don’t take the time to cultivate and nurture. Do not assume it can wait. Whether it be luck or destiny. Hopefully these two brief definitions will give you food for thought. Work hard for what you want and the fruits of our labors will likely take root and flourish. 14 | maria christie glamour photography | www.mariachristie.com | 916.705.7106 | March 2015

I SPY WITH MY

GREEN EYE!

It’s that time of year to get out of the dull of the cold and winter and spruce up our nests. The color green is a wonderful route to take for this. When you go shopping, try this neat little mission. Only shop for “green”. Trust me, you will see things that you will be tempted by that have many other colors - that cute pair of shoes, or that cute blazer. But, try to stay strong and only green. How about a new house plant that you can start as only a little one and raise up tall, or cute green toes or fingers. Oh and don’t forget maybe a new fluffy set of towels for your bathroom.

hat do you mean photograph like a Bobcat? The Bobcat, also known as the Lynx, is a hunter of patience. They are superior hunters, and they incorporate stealth and strategy. The Bobcat is teaching us a lesson that we can apply not only to photography, but to life as well. In order for us to get what we want, we must be willing to plan, adapt, and above all, have the patience to see our ideals manifest into a photograph or into a lifestyle. When you are photographing, take your time! I can’t stress the importance of this. Sometimes our shots are not always there - you have to be patient and wait for them. There is a beauty in the unposed shot just as much as in the posed ones. When you are directing your subjects into position be nice and patient because if you rush them, they will feel rushed and the photography may look rushed.

To be both wild and intelligent at the same time is the mark of practiced genius. ~Anguis There is a also a beauty in anticipation (also patience). If you know that you want to photography a beautiful smile of a child, wait for it, it will come. How about a beautiful sunset - wait for it, it too will come. There’s a beauty of getting into the groove. Believe it or not, the art of patience, helps us with our all around lives. It causes us to really pay attention when we are in the company of others and to not only be there physically, but mentally as well. So, next time you pick up your camera, get your stealth on and get in touch with your inner Bobcat.

CALLING ALL GREENS!

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PERSONALITY? How understanding your color type can lead to improved health, better personal relationships& more productive outcomes at work!

By LaTrice V. Jordan

It’s not easy being GREEN...or is it?

BEST RELATIONSHP MATCHES While many color combinations can work if the relationship is given the proper time and attention, Dr. Ritberger believes we all have a best fit! Green + Yellow Yellows like to solve problems. Because of their neurology, their approach is logical and that doesn’t always give them option to see big picture. The Green gives them the ability to explore. Red + Orange These two are balanced together. They are both family oriented, predictable, need security. Orange + Green (of course Red would be the obvious fit) The Orange personality worries. They also get anxious and can get set in other people’s needs taking over their life. Green brings balance and spontaneity. Both are sensitive to others feelings.

Do you like freedom, nature and sharing? Are you all about having fun? Do you live in a world of hope, dreams and emotions? You could possibly be a green personality. In the spirit of All Things Green in March, Maria Christie Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Carol Ritberger, Ph.D, Yellow + Yellow world renowned author of “What Color is your Personality?” Yellows are very particular and have a set way of thinking. and the master mind behind the Personality Color Indica- They make decisions logically and with fact. A yellow best works tor (PCI) to do a deep dive into what it means to be GREEN. with a yellow! According to Dr. Ritberger, “greens have rich imaginations and thrive, flourish and grow when using their creative abilities. For greens, the intangibles of life are most important. They love to create ideas and explore possibilities, particularly when the ideas are created through brainstorming activities with others. Greens view life through a holographic perspective, which allows them to see the whole picture as they are creating. Consequently, the limitations and mental barriers that restrict most other types do not bind them. They focus on what things look like or could be, rather than what they are or were intended to be. Greens create novel applications for existing products, services and operations. When you combine a green’s ability to see the whole picture with their sensitivity to the feelings and emotions of others, they can create opportunities and solve problems that meet the needs of everyone involved. And, at the same time greens can be innovative and imaginative.” Not your makeup? Then undoubtedly you’re a yellow, red or an orange. By taking Dr. Ritberger’s personality assessment, which we will direct you to later, you can better understand yourself, potentially improve upon current relationships and reduce stress.

her thirties after being introduced to the concept by her counselor. Many personality assessments utilize number coding or descriptive words to categorize individuals such as driver or steadfast. After extensive research, Dr. Ritberger opted to take an approach she felt people could easily relate to, remember and understand. What differentiates Ritberger’s approach is her focus on health as well as self-assessment and improved relationships. “I started out using the Myers Briggs. I found that when I would follow up with my clients to help coach them in understanding their personality, nobody could remember their letters of Myers Briggs and some personality types just plain don’t like being categorized. So, I turned to a common language we all use and that’s the language of color. When I started looking at the psychology of color and how it actually changes the physiology of the body, I was intrigued. It causes us to act a certain way.” Dr. Ritberger explained. “I soon concluded that I could literally talk to the brain. That’s what the personality assessment does. It identifies very clearly how you gather information and make decisions.” She continued.

For centuries humans have tried to understand behavioral characteristics by analyzing individual personality types. You may be familiar with Myers Briggs or Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs utilized by millions seeking insight into who they are and why they react a certain way. This is also relevant in the workplace as corporations seek avenues to identify strengths and weaknesses of employees with a goal of creating a more productive environment.

When asked how simple statements in the assessment work so successfully, Dr. Ritberger expounded on the process stating that in each key phrase there is one word that each color personality will resonate with. While a yellow may pick up one word, an orange will identify with a totally different word. “What I found was that if I could get the brain to clearly say this is who I am then I could start to look at why we become stressed and what causes that. For example, if an orange personality, who

Dr. Ritberger became intrigued with color psychology in

makes decisions emotionally, tried to go in and make decisions based on logic like a yellow, even if it

made sense, they would change the chemistry of their body and find themselves worrying, fretting, feeling anxious or not wanting to say no. What I have found over the years is that while we adapt and adjust and we certainly expand who we are, when we get into a stressful situation that hard wiring in our brains always come back in because it is the set point and it says this is how you’re going to do this and that is what helps us to reset the chemistry in the body so that we don’t end up with chronic illness. Again my focus was always about stress and health.” While we all have a percentage of all four colors represented in Dr. Ritberger’s PCI (green, yellow, red and orange), your primary color defines who you are and once you understand characteristics of your color personality, you can use that information to improve yourself, handle stress which causes chronic illness and better control how you interact and communicate with others. So are you ready for your true color to SHINE through? What color are you? Are you a yellow, red or orange? Maybe you use facts and logic to make decisions. Sound familiar….could you be yellow? Yellow personalities use fact and logic to make decisions. They often ask themselves if they can expand the big picture. They go back and forth from right brain and left brain seeking to make sense of things. When they tap into emotion (or as Dr. Ritberger put it, put their big toe in the emotional pool), if no past experience of doing something bad comes up, they make the decision. If they recall something bad happening as a result of that decision, they go back and check logic and the decision. Further, according to Dr. Ritberger, if they get caught up in going back and forth, they get “analysis paralysis.” “If yellows have to make a decision without having time to think,

they fall apart neurology. What the yellow does to buy time to think is come back in a very sharp abrupt way to shut a conversation down so they can have time to think. If it’s with an orange or green on the other end, it’s brutal.” She added. Roses are Red….do you need to touch it, hear it, smell it, feel it and taste it? Red could be your color! Reds have predominantly left hemisphere thinking meaning information that they gather is tangible…see it, hear it, touch it, taste it, feel it, smell it. What they hear first is what they accept and act on. They are very audible. They make decisions based on logical analysis. They evaluate the information to past experience even if it didn’t totally work, they make a decision. “Reds are very much information in/information out,” summarizes Dr. Ritberger. Carol Ritberger, Ph.D., offers the following workshops globally: What Color Is Your Personality? Services offered globally Corporate Level Relationship Counseling Individual Counseling Are you kind, sensitive, team oriented and make decisions based on emotion? Hello Orange! An orange personality makes decisions based on emotion. They use emotions to evaluate if the decision is good or bad. The orange personality relates to all relationships in a very nurturing environment …a team cooperative environment based on kindness and sensitivity. “Any time a decision is made where the orange personality does not follow their heart, it will end up being the wrong decision. It will create stress and change the chemistry in their body. The orange will wish that they had more time to make sense of it all and that creates a loop of guilt and causes them to worry….should I have done things differently? The Orange personality has the neurology that things need to make sense and feel right so they’re asking their left brain to make sense of it and their right brain in the neurology to feel right and until those two come together the orange can’t make a decision. If pressed to make a decision, because they don’t want to create conflict, they get to live with the result and often the result is not really what they wanted to get out of the situation.” Dr. Ritberger concludes. I’M READY TO TAKE MY COLOR ASSESSMENT NOW!
