Christie’s Love
I
t seems befitting that our premier issue of Maria Christie Photography magazine begins this month of February 2015 - the traditional month of love Valentine’s month. I like to think of the month as a time to express love, hope, joy, gratitude, compassion and kindness. It can be used as a time to express these emotions as well as being an example of what these emotions look like in actions. So many go through life with busy tasks to complete each and every day. Rarely do we take the time to pause and truly appreciate the people, loved ones and things that we love. Life is short and many of the best things in life are what some may refer to as “simple”... a smile, a belly laugh, a touch, a phone call to or from someone you love, a gentle gesture, a sign of compassion, a word of forgiveness. Going through life it has been said that all of us have some common basic needs and desires - we all
want to be seen, heard and to know that we matter. I hope that you take this month and beyond to really take the time to do the things that really matter. Hold a baby - pay attention to their laugh; hold somebody’s hand; Look into somebody’s eyes and give them your one-on-one attention; share a gentle kiss; give a hug to someone in need; help others; stop and smell the flowers; take your child to dinner and vow to turn off your phone; give your hobby the time and attention it deserves; complete a long standing goal; be kind to yourself; forgive yourself for something you’ve done; and while you are in this place of loving...take photographs along the way.

MY BEST VALENTINE MEMORY
E
ach year around February 14th, the pressure begins. Whether you are in a long standing relationship, a new romance, or going solo - here it comes...a reminder that it is time to do something for your significant other and you better shine (at least that’s what society says). There are constant reminders from every high-end retail store to Target, Walmart, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Mall that you need to spend a lot of money to get this right so you do not end up in the dreaded doghouse. Perhaps it is helpful to know the history of Valentine’s Day. Although several theories can be found on the Internet simply by Googling, here is one from history.com that is interesting and romantic: The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II
decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Dear Diary
Always Daddy’s Girl
22 Years ago Cupid delivered my Valentine love to me, the most beautiful baby girl that I had ever seen. She is my life’s treasure!! When she was 6 or 7 years old my date every Valentine’s day was my daughter. I watched those years transition from her mother dressing her in beautiful dresses to the days in which she would dress herself as a beautiful young woman. My daughter is now 22 years old and, of course, I miss those treasured dates but I’m grateful and thankful to God for blessing me to experience the best Valentine’s days of my life with my Destinee!! Cloyce Girls Best Friend My first Valentine’s Day with my fiancé and it was amazing. That January, I’d been looking Online for a puppy and found (the perfect little one) I loved. I wanted more information about the dog but had to work, so my now-fiancé said he’d call and talk to the breeder for me. Later, he called to tell me the puppy had been sold. I was crushed. A month later, on the day before Valentine’s Day, I walked into his apartment and found a card waiting for me. As I was reading it, his dog came running towards me. I started playing with him and then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw this tiny little dog run past me with several bows around his neck. I started squealing as my fiancé said, “Do you recognize him?” He had not only bought the puppy I wanted but had arranged for him to be driven from Missouri and had picked him up at 1 a.m. This is the greatest gift anyone has ever given me – and that Valentine’s Day remains the very best one of my life. Brenda Sunset Reservations One of my best memories of Valentines Day was last year. My boyfriend called me up and told me we had reservations “just before sunset”. I was confused but said what time specifically? He then told me to just be ready around 4:00pm in comfortable clothing. I said ok. He arrived and we were on our way. We were driving through the streets of Los Angeles taking all kinds of twists and turns that I was unfamiliar with. I was in my head wondering where we were going because none of the restaurants I was familiar with were on these streets. Finally, we pulled up to a location that looked nothing like the gourmet restaurant I was expecting where I assumed we had these reservations. We were at a helicopter pad! I screamed with excitement. Our reservations were to tour the city of Los Angeles at sunset for Valentine’s Day. The best ever. So romantic, I only wish I had taken my camera with me but I was able to take a few with my camera phone. Monique

One of my favorite memories of childhood and later adult years of visits to my grandmothers home
was going through the old brown wicker basket where she kept all of the most precious family photos. Back then, we didn’t handle the photos with white gloves - but we probably should have. They are priceless. It represented my family history in a little wicker box. There was a torn photograph of my grandmother when she was a young girl; a photo of my grandmother’s parents and a few of her sister; my grandfather with some musical legends from his era as a legendary DJ in the Motor City Detroit; My mother and my aunt when they were teenagers; my brothers and I in the backyard when we were very small; my little brother when he was a baby; my cousins at our birthday parties and many more. The beauty of these photographs was that they were printed and we could all touch and feel them. They are our family art pieces. With today’s technology, we must be careful that we do not fall prey to feeling mistakenly comfortable with our precious photographs being only in computer systems and hostages in our mobile devices. Make sure to print them out for years of sharing and telling your history. Read on to learn how to set your photographs free.
ARE YOUR PHOTOS HOSTAGES IN YOUR MOBILE PHONE?
FREE MY PICS! A great thing about having a smart-phone today is they come with built in cameras. Hence, you always have a camera accessible literally at your fingertips. You can use your mobile camera as a way to capture your everyday life - everyday. Today’s technology will also produce a pretty decent print - If you follow several simple rules. You have to know how to work your camera function on your phone, learn the basics of how to turn on your flash and then how to focus your image. The next step is key and
FREE MY PICS! critical. DO NOT use your camera phone as your permanent storage device. Can you imagine how upset you will be if you lose your phone or it gets stolen or you don’t have it backed up in “the cloud”? Don’t let this happen to you. You should always have a steady routine to back up your photos and remove them from your phone. This will also allow you to free up storage space and will allow your device to perform optimally. Follow these steps to backup and FREE MY PICS!
FREE MY PICS!
1.
Make sure you always keep the cords that come with your phone when purchased. It might be helpful to always store them in one location - like a specific drawer when not using the cords.
2.
Plug your phone into your computer (one end fits into the phone and the other USB or Fire-wire fits into the computer). Follow the instructions on your computer for where you want to store and manage your photos. I recommend a folder named “My photos” or if you are using a Mac, store in IPhoto.
3.
For added security, I would further back up my precious photographs on an external hard drive. You can usually purchase these with plenty of space for under $100. Then you are double backed up.
4.
Finally, print some of your favorites, frame them and display them to enjoy everyday.

HOW TO TAKE BEAUTIFUL TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHS On your next vacation
W
elcome to the beautiful Half Moon luxury resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. A place of luxury, fine dining, warm weather, gorgeous beaches, catering staff, superb spas, tennis courts, golf and even horse back riding. Peace, calm and just about anything your little heart could desire. Many times we plan vacations in beautiful locations and create fabulous memories with plenty of breath taking visions that we wish we could bottle photographer: maria christie up, stow it in our luggage, and bring it home with us. Because this is not possible, please allow me to offer a way that lets you bring memories home with you to enjoy for years to come - TAKE PHOTOS! This may sound easy to some and complex to to others. I’m going to give you some tips that will make this process less intimidating and fun for you at the same time. The key tip to taking beautifu l travel photography is PATIENCE. Be patient with yourself and be patient with all subjects. You first hav e to look around and visually inhale your surroundings (as you should anyway seeing you are on vacation). You have to “feel” your surroundings and the presence you are in. When you are in a location, slowly and quietly sit - look around and consciously think about what would make a beautiful picture from what you are seeing. Think about composition and framing. Do you want to take in the entire scenery or just that one seashell you see at your toes in the sand? It is a bonus to see the picture in your head before you actually take out either your mobile phone or pointand-shoot or your DSLR (your photographer: maria christie 18 | maria christie glamour photography | www.mariachristie.com | 916.705.7106 | Premier Issue

big camera). Make a conscious decision about what you want to take a photograph of and take that photograph. Next, be aware of your LIGHTING. Sweet times of the day to photograph in natural lighting (without any flash) are sunrise and sunset. Of coarse you can still take great photographs throughout the day. Those are just the times to capture beautiful lighting effects. If you are ever unsure about your lighting (especially if you are photographing at night or in a very dimly lit room or area), use your flash feature on your mobile phone or your other camera. This will stop action (if you are photographing something or somebody in motion), as well as add light for a better result. Now that you know to be PATIENT, and to be aware of LIGHTING, your next step is to FOCUS. What you are FOCUSING on is huge. On most mobile phones, this is a feature that comes on your phone. When you are in camera mode, tap your screen and a little box should briefly pop up. That is where your lens is going to focus. Make sure you are composing to accommodate that. If there is a group of people, your box on some of your phones, will become many. Use that! It will help. Have fun, photograph and ENJOY!

SWEET IDEAS FOR YOUR SWEETHEART If you are (ah-hem) mature enough to remember this episode of I Love Lucy, you will remember this classic scene where eating the chocolate is helping Lucy and Ethel to keep their newly minted jobs. COMMUNITY HERO’S SHOUT-OUT
This area will be dedicated to the A Day in the Life Project as well as other organizations and nonprofits that are doing great things for our communities, youth, and the overall empowerment and increased quality of life for all. You can look forward to coming to this page for regular updates of what’s going and to read about other hero’s and organization in the community. It is important to recognize those community organizations that are doing good for all. There are many people that are working in the day-to-day trenches of making things better for youth and others in many creative, academically strong, and productively fun ways. This includes those that are in the backgrounds raising the funds to run the programs, those out there promoting the program, those forming partnerships with others to strengthen the programs, those working hands-on with the youth in the programs and on and on. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. This will be a dedicated area of where you can stay informed, support and have the option of volunteering and/or to financially give donations to further the cause of these organizations.
THE CREW: THE A DAY IN THE LIFE PROJECT CREW Some of “the crew” working with their first “cameras”. One technique used to teach pre-visualization and patience before they get the actual cameras in their hands. Framing and composition at its best.
If you have not yet heard of A Day in the Life Project, please allow us to introduce you. A Day in the Life Project is near and dear to our hearts as it is a non-profit organization that has a foundation that is designed to work with creative, under-served and at-risk youth through the art of photography. Although the organization works with all youth on all economic levels, the reach is strong to those challenged youth so as to give a creative approach while offering equal opportunities for success, progression, and advancement through life.
A Day in the Life Project is currently in partnership with Roberts Family Development Center working in the academic and creative after-school program at Robla School District and working with a group of youth at Marina Vista Housing Complex. Each of these groups meet each week advancing in academics and photography. TO DONATE and for more information, contact: www.adayinthelifeproject.org
