Domestic violence is currently considered a global challenge. It occurs in all countries, all cultures and at every level of society without exception. The main response of the Brazilian government for sheltering the victims is a women’s shelter called Casa Abrigo. This typology is exclusive to women whose lives are threatened. It is a public, discreet and temporary service for women and their children.

During the development of this project, it was noticed that the confidential nature of the service is one of the factors that hinder investment in this area, which created a sort of “itinerant architecture”, once the institution changes location periodically. Moreover, this feature is negative in some aspects, whereas creates conflict of institutional and domestic territories in the building. Therefore, it was relevant to study institutionalization of people, implicit relations of power in institutional architecture in contrast to domestic settings, and the function of privacy in the built environment.

Ultimately, it was perceived that sheltered women, instead of receiving tools for empowerment, lost their privacy and autonomy while they were institutionalized. Although this is inherent to traditional institutions, it is understood the possibility of improving and achieving a more human and participatory model of service and architecture.
