WHY HOSPITAL TEXTILES?

In the service industries, there is a lot of discarded textiles. So where do we have a large amount of textiles? Restaurants, hotels & hospitals is three places, where a lot of textiles gets discarded. But there is something special about working with hospital textiles. One of them is the personal relationship most people have with hospitals, because almost all of us will need their service at one point in our life, and most of us already know someone who has been in need of their services. This creates a personal relationship between the consumer and the materials. PRINTING

Another more practical reason, is the amount of different qualities that are available at a hospital. At a hospital they have everything from pants and shirts to sheets & shower curtains. Especially the clothing and sheets is of a very nice quality, because the comfort of it, is important for the user, and also because of allergies. therefore everything is 100% cotton. When using discarded textiles, there will always be the question of bacterias and dirt, and at a hospital, it is of most importance, that they are absolutely clean, and does not contain any chemicals from the washing process. Therefore hospital textiles goes through a very elaborate cleaning process, and is very safe to use afterwards. That is some of the reasons why hospital textiles is very beneficial to work with. Working natural dyes currently experiences a great renaissance, but let us not forget; it is the oldest way of dyeing textiles. From thousands of years back we have dyed our textiles with plants and organic material available around us in order to embellish and ornate, or to differentiate from other textiles. Indigo, cochenille lice, safran flower and mud are amongst the most traditional dyeing agents. Although these are quite precious and exotic ingredients, there are plenty of natural dye agents around us, in our homes, gardens and in wild nature. For example, avocado stone, onion skins and turmeric are effective dyes that produce beautiful colors. Tired flower arrangements or garden flowers including amongst others eucalyptus, marigold and dahlias are particularly good for eco printing. And from early spring till late autumn, you can forage plants for natural dyeing processes - they really are all around.

One of the challenges you’ll meet upon embarking on your natural dyes adventures is the issue of color fastness. This relates to how and if the color will fade with light and time. Many natural dyes are sensitive to sun light and washing, meaning they will fade upon exposure. One way of going about solving this is using a so-called mordant that will help fixate the dye to the textile. Amongst the most usual - and most safe - mordants is alum (hydrated potassium aluminium sulfate), salt, tannins and vinegar. Another important thing to consider is to use textiles that have been treated as little as possible before applying the natural dye. Therefore, undyed textiles are preferred, although most light textiles will be able to attract some color. A textile that is already heavily dyed will not be able to fixate a lot of the natural dyes, as they are saturated with the far more powerful chemical dyes.

Remazol is color used for both textile printing and dyeing. One of the advantages of this type of color is that it has a large span and therefore can be used on all natural fabrics, such as silk, wool and cotton, as well as a few synthetic fibers.

Dyeing with remazol, is quite similar to the printing technique. You start by mixing the colour with a binder, a salt, urea & soft water. The urea opens up the fibers, and enables the color to enter the material. Afterwards you place your textile into the mixture and when fully covered, take it out and let it dry One of the easy techniques for printing and follow the steaming and washout with remazol is that you simply paint process. with the color directly on the textile as you would with watercolor. One thing Binder, salt & urea are all chemicals, that is important to remember is that that can be bought off the counter at in order for the color to remain on the drug stores and pharmacies. For the fabric, it requires a binder mixed up correct measurements look online. with the color. After you have painted your material, you let the color dry. When completely dry, you have to steam your fabric, which is where the color gets binded to the material. After the steaming you take the textile through a washout process, starting with cold water, working your way up to hot water, until there is no color residue left, and the water is clear.
