DAVID BYRNE CENTER FOR HOUSING WORKS soho, ny In my designing process words like “rhythm” and “harmony” would always be in my mind: the rhythm of the structure and the harmony of the program. Since the structure sets the rhythm, I wanted it to be in the façade, my building face and bones. The structure spanning matches the tradicional cast iron columns rhythm in the surroundings. In the facade, there are stairs coming out from the structure that articulate the entire building. I seeked harmony when orgarnizing the uses, and it is something similar to harmony in music: architecture cares about adjecencies in uses and music in notes, that would be the chord.

The idea was to have as many event spaces as possible, so one can have several events happening at once and yet have the bookstore going. The bookstore is distributed in between four floors: L1, 1st, 2nd and 4th floors. There is a bookstack that is twice larger than the actual one and twice more offices. Also, there is a 2-floors clinic with a pharmacy, childcare and exam rooms. On the top of the building, there are a small auditorium and a large event space.

HOTEL recife, brazil An 11 stories hotel, with a total of 96 rooms (15% of them are acessible) surrounded by a park and a waterfront. The hotel site is such that it is impossible for the building to have a rear façade – the “L” shape ratifies it. This shape embraces the hotel common area building that faces the Pina Basin. This separated block contains an entrance plaza on the first floor, a restaurant on the second, and a pool and a bar on the third. Other uses such as rooms, kitchen, auditorium, sauna, fitness, staff room, warehouse, administration, etc. were placed at the hotel main building.

The rooms are of 4 different sizes. The corridors, panoramic elevators and staircase consequently face the linear park. To filter the sunlight and enable the wind to enter, we used cobogos (a kind of a brise-soleil from Pernambuco) that it is a native element, largely applied in our weather. There are also on the first floor stores which are intended to the guests and passersby. In addition, the porches are green – with vegetation – as a way of bringing the park into the building. The kitchen, on the 2nd floor articulates the restaurant and the service wing on the first floor. The slabs on the 2nd and 3rd floor are molded in a way that creates a triple ceiling height on the reception area.

URBAN EXPASION ipojuca, brazil The task was to plan a city expansion of the main district of Ipojuca, PE - Brazil. This city is located nearby an on growing port – Port of Suape – that influences the area economically, socially and ecologically. Ipojuca is mostly a dormitory city with a commercial character. The starting point was to determine the number of inhabitants: 4000 people or 1000 families - 300 families that lives in the district risk areas and 700 new families as a new demand created by the port activities.

streets projections

In regards to the new street grid, the main streets were drawn as continuation of the “commercial street” and “residential street” that we identified as the most important. We called these streets “growth axes”. Also, we proposed a huge linear park to connect the existing and the proposed parts of the city. Although the city law allows a higher construction density, we did not choose tall architectural typologies, trying to adapt and harmonize the new area to the already consolidated dynamics of the city and to avoid gentrification. Having said that, we proposed typologies such as one-story houses, four-stories residential buildings with free standing columns or commercial use on the first floor.
