grendels mother BOOK: BETWEEN 8th AND 9th CENTURY WRITER: UNKNOWN MOVIE: 2007 ROLE PLAYER: ANGELINA JOLIE

Grendel’s mother (Old English: Grendles moðor) is one of three antagonists (along with Grendel and the dragon) in the work of Old English literature of anonymous authorship, Beowulf (c. 700-1000 AD). She is never given a name in the text. After the monster Grendel is slain by the hero Beowulf, Grendel’s mother attacks the mead-hall Heorot to avenge his death. Beowulf is tasked with destroying her, and ventures into her lake-based home, Grendel’s Mere. When Grendel’s mother senses his presence, she immediately attacks Beowulf and drags him into her home. They then engage in fierce combat. Grendel’s mother is about to defeat Beowulf when he sees a sword in the “mere”. He uses the sword to decapitate Grendel’s

mother and to behead the corpse of Grendel which came back to life when Beowulf strangled her. Some words of the original text are a little bit confusing, for this reason there are people who tell different versions of the whole story, including Grendel’s Mother appearence and objectives.

book vs movie

In the book, she was an aquatic creature with hard scales and sharp teeth, She was the terror of the villages on the coast of Denmark. Reproduced with a sea monster guarding his cave sub-aquatic and gave birth to Grendel. In the movie, she is a creature hidden in a submerged cave that made treatment with a long line of Danish kings. In exchange for a “child” would be given power, strength and so on. In the book, Grendel’s mother is really like a monster, ugly and all. In the movie she is Angelina Jolie, c’mon, she is wonderful and hot and nothing like the poem.

professor moriarty BOOK: 1893 WRITER: SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE MOVIE: 2011 ROLE PLAYER: JARED HARRIS The archenemy of Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty is a criminal mastermind whom Holmes describes as the “Napoleon of crime”. Doyle lifted the phrase from a real Scotland Yard inspector who was referring to Adam Worth, one of the real life models of Moriarty. The character of Moriarty as Holmes’ greatest enemy was introduced primarily as a narrative device to enable Conan Doyle to kill off Sherlock Holmes, and only featured directly in two of the Sherlock Holmes stories. However, in more recent derivative work he is often given a greater prominence and treated as Holmes’ primary antagonist. Moriarty is a confident man, assuring Holmes that if he meddles in his plans, he risks inevitable destruction. He has full respect for Holmes’ intellect and

says that it has been an intellectual treat to grapple with him but is also completely willing to kill Holmes should he oppose him any further, showing a ruthless side. He has a fiery temper, furiously elbowing aside people in the train station when Holmes escapes him.

book vs movie

In the book there’s no mention about Irene Adler. In the movie, Moriarty is the responsible for Irene Adler’s death. In the movie, Holmes and Moriarty fall from a cliff. In the film, the characters are attending a European Peace Conference held near the falls which Moriarty seeks to sabotage, and the two plunge down from a balcony overlooking the falls rather than from the ledge of the original story.

dracula BOOK: 1897 WRITER: BRAM STROKER MOVIE: 1992 ROLE PLAYER: GARY OLDMAN Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England, his story with Elizabeta and her reencarnation, Mina and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. The novel touches on themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Although Stoker did not

invent the vampire, he defined its modern form, and the novel has spawned numerous theatrical, film and television interpretations. It has millions fans around the world, we suspect his fame increase a lot after Gary Oldman’s interpretation, c’mon, he’s really hot in the movie!

book vs movie

In the book, it is not shown how he became a vampire but is indirectly said that he was already a vampire during the war as he always returned alone and came back again. Still in the book, Dracula is not shown to particularly love Mina or any other woman from his past. In the movie, it is told that he became a vampire only after he won the war and lost his wife. Dracula falls in love with Mina because he believes she is a reincarnation of his dead sweetheart, Elisabeta. So, this is such a change of facts, don’t you think?

erik, the phantom BOOK: 1910 WRITER: GASTON LEROUX MOVIE: 2004 ROLE PLAYER: GERARD BUTLER

The Phantom’s story has been changed many times by different directors and authors, but according to the original novel by Gaston Leroux, a man named Erik lived underneath the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. He was a musical genius, but shunned the outside world and used skillful trickery and gadgets (like a two-way mirror) to make himself seem like a ghost haunting the place. He demanded a payment of 20,000 francs a month and the free use of ‘Box 5’ from the managers, threatening violence and disaster upon them and the company should they fail to comply. As the story begins, however, two new managers take over and dismiss his mysterious notes and the company’s stories about him as nonsense.

31

book vs movie

In the book, The Phantom is really a man named Erik who comes from the middle east and had a chaotic youth, being born with a hideously ugly face, being part of a show for a tribe of gypsies, designing palaces filled with torture devices for royals in Iran and Constantinople before finally settling down in Paris. The Phantom attends an opera dinner in the beginning of the book, wearing a fake nose to conceal his identity. In the movie, The Phantom, who was born with a disfigured face, escaped from a life as a freakshow exhibit and went to live in the tunnels beneath the Opera House. He’s not so ugly, please, Gerard Butler is in the role! Also, The Phantom never goes to events with any of the opera patrons. The only event he goes is the mask ball, but he is with a skull mask covering all his face and he doesn’t pretend to hide his identity.

hannibal, the cannibal BOOK: 1981 WRITER: THOMAS HARRIS MOVIE: 2002 ROLE PLAYER: ANTHONY HOPKINS Dr. Lecter is a brilliant forensic psychiatrist. He is also a serial killer and a cannibal, preparing the meat of his victims into tasty dishes for himself and serving them to unsuspecting guests. Yuuummiii isn’t it? Although he is a killer, Lecter is still a very refined gentleman. He is meticulous in appearance, speaks very precisely, has an impeccable wit, astonishing intellect, and a gourmet palate. In Red Dragon, FBI Agent Will Graham has been called out of early retirement to catch a serial killer, known by authorities as “The Tooth Fairy”. He asks for the help of his arch-nemesis, Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter, so that he can be able to catch “The Tooth Fairy” and bring him to justice. The only problem is that “The Tooth Fairy” is getting inside in-

formation about Graham and his family from none other than Dr. Lecter. He’s kind of old, but every women go crazy about him, and please, who doesn’t?

43

book vs movie

In the novel reveals that Lecter’s left hand has a condition called mid ray duplication polydactyly. In Hannibal, he performs plastic surgery on his own face on several occasions, and removes his extra digit. Lecter’s eyes are a shade of maroon, and reflect the light in “pinpoints of red”. He is also said to have small white teeth and dark, slickedback hair with a widow’s peak. In the movie, the lurid character gains a certain untamed nature, however he keeps the traces of a gentleman and the abilities of an artist in all ways. The cinematographic version of Hannibal Lecter is even more astonishing with the calm face of a mid-age man hiding the inside madness, while make all sort of diabolical mental games with Will Graham.
