Dear Members, In just a few short weeks, Salamander’s PGA TOUR tradition continues at Innisbrook. Preparations are well underway for the 2013 Tampa Bay Championship, scheduled for March 11-17 on our renowned Copperhead Course, and we look forward to welcoming the world-class players, broadcasters and fans. For additional information please visit www.TampaBayChampionship.com. On February 2, I officially took up my position on the Executive Committee of the United States Golf Association. I am eager to share the Grand Golf Resorts of Florida story, facilities and vision with this influential group, and will keep you updated on developments. Finally, we recently hosted the first group to challenge our Legends of Golf Trail, encompassing all nine courses at each of our Florida resorts. The group, comprised of influential golf and travel writers, started its six-day journey at Hammock Beach and were blown away by the resort, its amenities and service. A story about the Conservatory Course has already been published, and we anticipate many more to follow. Yours in hospitality,

SHEIL A C. JOHNSON

In the January newsletter we reintroduced you to the committee chairs and the ABOG members serving on the respective committees. The committees have all had an opportunity to meet and establish their new goals and objectives which the ABOG reviewed at their January 28 meeting. Goals and objective of each committee will be posted on the member website for review. We encourage club members to participate on these committees and if you have any interest please contact the appropriate chairperson. For your convenience, the following is a summary of the committee meeting schedules in the event you would like to participate this year:

Jeanette Prellwitz: February 12: 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2PM In the second half of 2012, we eliminated one of the monthly socials and promised we would reallocate the funds to better serve the overall membership. As a result, we were able to bring you a number of exciting social events over the past holiday season. All were well attended, in fact so much so that we were not able to accommodate everyone interested in attending. We hope to do a better job addressing this problem in the coming year. With an entire years worth of savings in 2013 we are excited about the

offerings we have in store for the year ahead. Please check the calendar, since there will be one additional event every month. As most of you are aware, much needed improvements to the Ocean Course have been completed by way of the greenside bunkers being redone on holes number 1, 8, 10 and 17. Additional funding of approximately $100,000 has been committed in 2013 to further enhance more bunkers on the Ocean Course. The greens will be completely redone at the Conservatory beginning in June. As a result, the Conservatory golf course will be shut down for approximately 3 months, at which time full golf members will be offered access to the Hammock Dunes golf courses at the cost of $60/person including golf cart. Tee times should be made through the Hammock Beach pro-shop. Currently, the sale of Conservatory Golf memberships is going very well. To date, 37 memberships have been sold. In addition, progress is being made with the resale of 6 lots. Construction has already begun on 2

of these lots. With the addition of these new members, activity has already begun to pick up at the Conservatory. This has also allowed the Club to begin scheduling more social events at this facility, as evidenced by the special dinner scheduled on Saturday, Feb 16 at the Conservatory Clubhouse. As you know, the hours of operations for Delfinos, Sushi Bar, Loggerheads and Cigar Bar change frequently. These changes can be found in Marianne’s weekly eblast in the Food and Beverage News section in the links after “Hours of Operations Snapshot”. The same links can also be found on the member website’s Dining page, in the right column that reads “Dining Hot Sheet”. As always, we encourage your constructive feedback. Suggestions and comments can be emailed to me at bobbuonaiuto@yahoo.com or Marianne Murphy at mmurphy@hammockbeach.com.

R E L A X T H E A R M S F O R M O R E D I S TA N C E BY BRAD HAUER, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Does your plan of hitting an extra long drive backfire more than succeed? Usually when we’re trying to get a little more distance out of our drives we end up creating more tension in our swing, resulting in slower clubhead speed and less distance. If you find this to be the case in your golf swing, try the following tips. First, try producing less pressure and tension in your grip. Gripping the club too tightly will cause your forearms and shoulders to become restricted, thus resulting in a shorter turn in the backswing. The grip pressure is similar to taking a banana, peeling it, and gripping the banana without putting any fingerprints on it. When done properly, you will feel more relaxed in your arms when gripping the club in your set up. Secondly, at the top or completion of your backswing, eliminate tension in your arms by making them feel as if they are wet noodles. Staying relaxed at this point of the swing will help you sync your arms with your body efficiently.

beach livin g | 6

Working the two tips above will help create more clubhead speed without swinging harder at the ball and get the little added distance when you really need it. As always, if you’re struggling with your golf game, please contact our golf professional staff to set up private lessons. We are more than happy to help you with the improvement of your golf game. A private lesson program can help you focus your thoughts on sound fundamentals that will help improve your game.

TENNIS TIP

FOR BETTER VOLLEYS: FINISH ON THE SAME SIDE A S Y O U S T A R T B Y H A R R Y G I L B E R T, D I R E C T O R O F T E N N I S

incorrect

correct

I’m sure we have all heard the old saying, “Finish what you start”. This month’s tip is very similar— for better volleys,“Finish on the same side that you start”.

When volleying, you want to begin by getting yourself into position and lining up the strings on the line of the incoming ball. For good direction on the volley, remember to extend the strings out and through the ball staying on the same side. In the first photo, I have allowed my racquet to drift across my body and this will result in a weak volley with loss of directional intent. In the second photo, I have kept my racquet on the line of the ball and finished on the same side. The result is a firmer volley with better direction. In addition to the accompanying photos, click on the link below to see a quick video of this tip. http://youtube/1ZUVNYpYjgo See you on the courts.

GOLF STRETCHING FOR THE TEE B O X A N D P R I O R T O T H E 1 9 TH H O L E B Y T H O R H O L M , D I R E C T O R O F S PA , R E C R E AT I O N & F I T N E S S The following exercises are intended to help you prepare for Golf and are not intended to replace a regular regimen of exercise or flexibility training. You will, with consistent application of these techniques, find that you will become more flexible. Caution: If you have any health concerns please consult your physician before proceeding. If at any time during these exercises your feel any pain or discomfort STOP IMMEDIATELY and seek medical advice. Point of Stretch: The point of stretch is different for each person in terms of degrees but the feeling should be the same. The point of stretch is that point where you begin to feel discomfort but not pain, as you become more and more flexible the area you are stretching will require more movement in the direction of the stretch to reach the point of stretch. Proceed slowly but do proceed because the benefits will enable you to enjoy your round of golf and perform better Golf from the ground up!: These exercises are noted in a particular order to reflect the importance of building your swing from the ground up. While stretching is important prior to your round it is vital after. All of the areas are utilized and contracted upwards of 150 times a round with practice swings and the driving range over a 4 hour time frame. To shut down and not lengthen the muscles after all that would be shame. Once you get this routine down you should be able to complete it in 6 minutes.

Golf Stretching on the Tee: Part One Inner Thigh: Using your driver for balance, place your feet 2-3 feet apart keep your back upright and shift your hips to right letting your right leg bend while keeping your left leg straight until you reach the point of stretch. Hold for twenty seconds and repeat on the opposite side. Quadriceps: Using your driver for balance in your left hand, keep your legs together and bring your right foot up into your right hand. Find the point of stretch by pointing the right knee towards the ground. Hold for twenty seconds and repeat on the opposite side. Hip Flexors: Using your driver for balance, start with your feet together and take a step out with the right foot about 2-3 feet keeping both feet pointed straight out tighten your abdominals, bend the right knee until you reach that point of stretch then hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite leg. Hamstring: Using your driver for balance, start with both feet facing forward and about 1 foot apart step out with the right leg 2-3 feet and straighten the leg with the toe pointed up and sit into the stretch until you reach the point of stretch and repeat for the opposite leg. beach living | 10

Calf: Using your driver for balance, stepbp back with your right foot about 2-3 feet. With both feet pointed forward and keeping your right leg straight bend your left knee until you reach the point of stretch and hold for twenty seconds and repeat with the opposite leg Core/Interseratus: Stand with your feet slightly over shoulder width apart and reach over your head with your left arm and assist the stretch by using your right hand to lengthen the stretch to the point of stretch hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite side. Core/Obliques: Stand with your feet slightly over shoulder width apart holding your driver behind your back as illustrated. Keep your torso upright and bend the knees slightly turn slowly to your right until you reach the point of stretch then hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite side. Look for the remaining stretches in Part Two in the March Newsletter.
