Dear Members, I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. First, let me start by congratulating Kevin Streelman for winning the 2013 PGA TOUR’s Tampa Bay Championship played at Hammock Beach’s sister resort, Innisbrook. Played on the stunning Copperhead Course, the tournament received worldwide coverage on NBC and The Golf Channel, and received rave reviews from the competitors. It was also nice to see so many familiar faces from Hammock Beach taking in the action in person. Prior to, and during the event, our public relations team was working to secure coverage about Hammock, Salamander and the Grand Golf Resorts of Florida collection. Here are just a few: • Golfweek: Lady Trump Outshines the Donald in Florida • Bleacher Report: A Woman’s Touch • NBC: Talking Golf with NBC’s Dan Hicks • Florida Golf: Time to Anoint Hammock Beach as a top Florida golf resort April brings with it lots of exciting and fun family activities. For more information, please contact Marianne Murphy.

Here’s to a happy spring! Yours in hospitality,

GM CORNER

DEAR CLUB MEMBERS

Last month, the Club at Hammock Beach had 8 employees nominated for the 2013 Rose Awards Program, a recognition program sponsored by the North Florida Hotel & Lodging Association (NFHLA). The NFHLA covers the hospitality industry in the five counties of Flagler, St. Johns, Duval, Nassau and Clay. Hotels and resorts, clubs, airlines, car rental and transportation companies and area attractions nominated their top performing employees - over 150 “Star” performing employees – to be recipients of a prestigious Rose Award (Recognition Of Service Excellence) in 25 industry categories. If you find this to be the case in your golf swing, try the following tips. I am pleased to announce the following “Stars” from Hammock Beach were nominated by the NFHLA and attended the 2013 Rose Award Ceremony at the Renaissance Hotel at World Golf Village:

Brittany Boyer – Exec. Admin Santosha “Kai” Hayes – Banquet Bartender Madeline Kinney – Golf Shop Attendant Alex Mecalco – Banquet Cook

Joanne Parthemore – Delfino’s Server Randy Lott – Banquet Captain Latisha Smith – HR Coordinator Walter Sam – Personal Trainer

The Rose Award for the Golf Services category was won by our “Star” performer:

Madeline Kinney at the Conservatory Golf Shop Please congratulate and recognize all these “Star” performers – to us, they are all winners!

Sincerely,

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all members that the 2013 Annual Member Survey was e-blasted to everyone in March with a deadline for return of March 27. In an effort to make the survey less tedious, we streamlined it by reducing it from 45 to 19 questions. Hopefully, this made it easier and less time consuming for you to fill out. We will analyze the results and attempt to distribute the results as quickly as possible.

It was announced at the Member Manager Reception that the club is running a half page ad in Sun and Surf Magazine in the second quarter, which will promote Club Exchange and Conservatory Recallable Memberships along with an article on the Ocean Course. There will also be a membership drive postcard mailer targeted at specific households within a 50 mile radius of the club to promote these memberships. If you have any specific questions about the membership drive, please contact the membership office. In an attempt to dispel any rumors to the contrary, Carlton Grant reiterated at the Member Manager Reception, that Salamander is still in the planning stages for the replacement of the Lodge and has not approached Flagler County with any plans as yet. Pro Formas and renderings are underway and changes continue to be made, however, we have been assured that Salamander will present these renderings to the members first to get the community’s feedback and support prior to any meetings with county officials regarding this project. You may have also heard that our Golf Superintendant Ron Baker announced he was leaving as of the beginning of March. Although we will miss him, I am happy to announce that Brad Hauer has already hired his replacement. Our new Golf Superintendant is Steve Sorrell. Steve is a graduate of Penn State University School of Agronomy. His past experience has afforded him the opportunity to work with both Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus at a few of their facilities. He also

worked with Brad in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Most recently, he was the Golf Superintendant at Hammock Dunes, and his many years of experience maintaining grass here in the Hammock will be invaluable to us here at Hammock Beach. He will be a welcome addition and his hire is timely with the upcoming Conservatory green replacement project commencing in June. The Ocean Course bunker refurbishment program continues. The golf committee has been working with the golf staff to prioritize and identify the bunkers to be redone. The start date on this project will be announced shortly. Please be patient with the heavier than usual bunker grass growth around the edges of the bunkers. The grass is being maintained higher than normal in an effort to strengthen the root structure and reduce washouts from heavy rains. Although it appears unsightly now, it will pay dividends going forward. Now that the Club is getting into its busy season, the Sushi Bar will be open daily (Monday thru Friday). Members can continue to enjoy the $22 Member Sushi menu on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. New member menus have gone into effect March 15 for both the Atlantic Grille and Delfinos Restaurants. We hope you will enjoy the new and improved options.

Repairs have been completed at the main pool with the slide surface recoating and lazy river pump refurbishment. I understand that now the speed of the lazy river can be varied as desired. Upgrades have also been made in the spa, with 3 new pedicure chairs being installed in March. The existing manicure table will be relocated to make room for the 3rd pedicure chair. Please update your calendars for the following upcoming events:

Annual Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament April 24-26 Club Championship May 18-19 Annual Ladies Retreat at Hammock Beach for the weekend of August 16 As always, we encourage your constructive feedback. Suggestions and comments can be emailed to me at bobbuonaiuto@yahoo.com or Marianne Murphy at mmurphy@hammockbeach.com.

M A I N TA I N Y O U R P O S T U R E F O R A D D E D P OW E R BY BRAD HAUER, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

If you are losing distance or hooking the golf ball more than you would like, you may need to pay attention at maintaining a better posture throughout your swing. Generally, loss of distance or power can come from a result of standing up and losing your posture during the swing.

be ac h liv ing | 6

When working with our students, I like to use video and draw a vertical line behind the student that touches the seat of their pants. The goal in the swing is to have the seat of your pants always touching the line throughout the backswing and down through the impact area. I have enclosed several pictures showing the correct positions in the set up, top of the backswing, and down through the impact position. I have also enclosed a photo of what a typical incorrect impact position would look like as well. So what do you want to feel to help maintain your posture and add more power? One of my favorite swing thoughts is to have the sensation that you are barely sitting on a bar stool while you make your backswing. As you do this you will feel the right hip pocket point out and away from the golf ball. The right thigh will sink slightly producing more coil and power. This will help you achieve a better impact position as shown in the correct impact picture. By doing so, you will be maximizing the power you can generate in the swing. Give this a try on the range and I guarantee you’ll like the results.

TENNIS TIP

TENNIS ELBOW PREVENTION B Y G E N E PA U L L A S C A N O , T E N N I S P R O F E S S I O N A L

Tennis elbow occurs when a specific tendon on the outer arm is irritated, inflamed, or damaged as a result of the repetitive twisting of the forearm and elbow from activities such as tennis, golf, baseball throwing, and bowling. Athletes who develop tennis elbow often complain of a knife-like pain on the outer part of the elbow. Here are a few things you can do

beach livin g | 10

to prevent tennis elbow.

CHECK YOUR GRIP SIZE: Start with a grip that matches your hand; a grip too big or small will make you have to work harder. While gripping your racquet, you should be able to fit the index finger of your non-hitting hand in the space between the ring finger and palm (see photo). CHANGE YOUR EQUIPMENT: Believe it or not, a head light racquet with a bit of weight is actually better for tennis elbow than a light and stiff racquet. Also, softer strings like natural gut significantly reduce the amount of vibration that travels through the racquet. Lowering your string tension can reduce the stress on your elbow as well. The less vibration that reaches your elbow, the less likely the tendon will flare up. USE PROPER BACKHAND TECHNIQUE: The backhand stroke is most commonly responsible for tennis elbow injuries. Poor form on the backhand can cause a player to mistime their shots, causing their arm to do most of the work. Having a skilled instructor evaluate your backhand and teach proper technique is essential to avoiding tennis elbow. The best thing to do is to focus on preventing tennis elbow. However if you are already feeling the effects of tennis elbow, applying ice to the affected area can help reduce the inflammation. Other forms of treatment include using a properly designed tennis elbow brace/band, strengthening exercises, and of course lots of rest. The good news is tennis elbow is treatable. If you have the right equipment and right instructor, you can become an even better player---without the discomfort. Good luck and happy hitting!
