TE E D R I L L TO CURE T HE S H ANK S BY BRAD HAUER, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Every golfer has experienced the dreaded shanks at one point in their golfing career. If you get them, it can be very discouraging and will destroy your confidence Shanking the golf ball is a result of hitting the ball off the hosel of the golf club and will cause the ball to go sharply to the right. This can be a result of flaws in your set up, backswing, or downswing positions. One drill that I have had success with over the years is the “Tee Drill”. The “Tee Drill” is a very simple way to get yourself out of the shanks. To do this drill, place a tee just inside the ball. You will want to address the ball, but the key to this drill is that when you make your swing you will focus your attention to clip the tee out of the ground. I love this drill because it gives you instant results. If you happen to still shank the ball with the tee in the ground, check to see if you clipped the tee, odds are that you missed it. After 10 or so shots with the tee drill, you will regain your confidence and be ready to tackle the golf course again!

The greens at Conservatory are making very good progress as the majority of the greens are experiencing 70 to 80% coverage.

beach livin g | 8

We have included some pictures showing the progression of the growth on the putting green over these past 24 days. Holes #5 and #8 are a little behind schedule, but should still be on target for opening on September 2. These greens will be receiving extra fertilizer applications to speed up the growth. We also included a picture of the bunker repair that was recently done to the greenside bunker on hole #16. New sand will be added to this bunker as well, but we wanted to show that the face of the bunker has been repaired and will be grown in nicely for our opening.

T E N N I S T I P : THE DROP SHOT

THE DROP SHOT

B Y G E N E PA U L L A S C A N O , H E A D T E N N I S P R O F ESS I O N A L

The drop shot is an effective shot if used properly, but is also one of the most difficult shots to execute. When attempting to hit a good drop shot, remember these 3 elements – SOFT, SHORT, SPIN.

Finally, SPIN (in particular backspin) will help keep the ball low after the first bounce on your opponent’s side of the net. If the spin is great enough, the bounce of the ball will also be shorter, causing your opponent to run farther to get to the ball. Remember to “slice” down on the back of the ball from high to low to impart plenty of backspin. The drop shot can be extremely effective if used properly and at the right moment. Mastering it takes a lot of time and practice. When practicing, remember the “3 S’s” and you’ll be on your way to adding a new weapon to your tennis arsenal.

Happy hitting!

beach livin g | 11

A good drop shot requires great touch or “SOFT hands”. Relaxing your grip and wrist at the point of contact will let the force of your opponents shot be absorbed by your racquet. This will make your shot less powerful and very likely to have a short first bounce. A great drop shot should bounce 3 times in the service box.

One of the best times to hit a drop shot is when the distance between you and the net is SHORT. Since the ball doesn’t have to travel too far, your opponent will have less time to retrieve it. Also, since the distance is shorter, the margin for error is much less.

b y T hor Ho lm, Dire ctor of Spa , R ecrea t i on & Fi t nes s The Core of core training comes down to being able to lower your center of gravity to provide a stronger base for all of your athletic and recreational activities. You can not walk into our fitness center at any time of day and not find someone doing a traditional exercise in a non traditional manner using a bosou ball, or exercise ball, standing on one leg, anything that will engage your core muscles. Besides the obvious esthetic benefits of a conditioned core, there is not a sport or an active endeavor that you will not benefit from and perform better with a stronger core and lowered center of gravity. Many of you have watched our beach staff this summer either setting up the beach or putting it away at night or just moving chairs and umbrellas throughout the day. I can tell you from first hand experience that this is a tremendous amount of work but basically an ideal core strengthening workout. They are carrying objects over an uneven surface repeatedly. We all have tasks that can provide similar benefits like landscaping work, vacuuming, mopping to name a few. Before farming out those tasks consider the benefits they can provide in addition to a sense of accomplishment and money in your pocket.

Two New Classes added to Aerobics Schedule. Body Flow will be taught by Donna Giallone and offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 am. Sign up sheets are in the Fitness Center.

beach livin g | 14

Body Flow is a metabolic based training program designed to fire up your muscles and metabolic rate to create a leaner, healthier you. This is not another cross fit or bootcamp class, Body Flow is designed to work multiple muscle groups in an effort to maximize calorie burn and increase the metabolic rate during and after the workout. Body Flow is guaranteed to keep your mind engaged and focused on achieving your fitness goals and getting the most out of every movement, muscle and moment during class. Shake up your fitness routine and get ready for amazing results.
