At our last Member/Manager Reception in February, I announced that the ABOG in establishing its goals and objectives for 2013 overwhelmingly felt that “enhanced communication” should remain at the top of our list. Nothing hurts Club morale more than rumors and misinformation. In an attempt to improve communication and create the most transparent environment possible, we have implemented a number of initiatives to facilitate better open communication. We have reformatted the Member/Manager Reception format in such a way that members will be updated less on current activities and events, and more on substantive matters related to Club operations and membership status. We ask you to rely on the calendar of events posted on the hammockbeach.net website and Marianne’s e-blasts about specific events. I apologize once again for the length of the last reception, and promise we will make every effort to limit the

presentation portion of the reception to 30 minutes. In order to help us accomplish this goal, I ask that members arrive promptly in order for us to begin the meeting at 5:30PM sharp so that cocktails can begin at 6. I will use this portion of the newsletter every month to communicate a recap of what was discussed at the reception. This will help those members who are unable to attend, to hear first hand what was communicated. Although the By-Laws prohibit Club members from attending the ABOG meetings every month, we post the minutes of the ABOG meeting along with the notes from all committee meetings on the Hammock Beach website. I encourage all members to access this resource every month in order that you know first hand what the ABOG is attempting to accomplish on your behalf. Since a number of questions have surfaced recently regarding the various levels of membership now being offered here at the Club, Marianne Murphy provided a handout membership benefits grid which we have posted on the member website. This grid not only provides prices, but clearly distinguishes what is different about each level of membership. Keep in mind that care was taken not to diminish any of the existing memberships when setting up the new levels of membership, such as the Conservatory category. If you have specific questions that need clarification, please contact the membership office. In an attempt to promote the development of the Conservatory property, the Club has recently sold approximately 37 new memberships at the Conservatory, 2 of which include members who have elected to begin construction of homes on the property. As such, you will notice increased activity at that facility. Separately, the Club has announced a Conservatory greens refurbishment program which will commence on or about June 1, 2013 and will require the course to be closed for approximately 3 months. During the time the course is closed, Conservatory members will be offered the opportunity to play the Ocean Course; however, Full Golf members will be given

priority for tee time bookings. In addition, the Club has arranged for Full Golf members to gain access to play both Hammock Dunes Courses for a fee of $60+ tax per round during this period. Arrangements need to be made through the Hammock Beach pro-shop. For the convenience of all golf members, the golf staff has begun posting a complete listing of all golf activities in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms at both golf courses on the appropriate communication bulletin boards. Also posted will be a listing of member preferred tee time blocks. As Brad announced at the reception, the tee time blocks are meant to insure that golf members have access to appropriate tee times and are given preference to resort guests. As we get into busier time periods, these tee time blocks will be adjusted accordingly to adequately accommodate the membership demands. The pro-shop has also committed to do a better job in giving advance notice of large golf group bookings that significantly impact member play. Notice will be posted on the member website and the communication bulletin board. Several questions have surfaced about the Club’s use of GolfNow.com for booking golf reservations for non-Club members. Simply stated, this is a program which has been used on a limited basis during the slower months of the year in an effort to fill some of the tee time space available and as a marketing tool to promote future Club membership. The program has been in effect for several years and generates approximately 300 additional rounds per year, typically in the colder months of January and February when there is tee time availability.

The Club has also begun to advertise locally to promote the sale of a limited number of exchange memberships. On the surface, it may appear that memberships are being offered at a discounted price, but that is not the case. This is a program to ease the financial burden on fellow members who own multiple memberships, while at the same time promoting new members to join. Please feel free to contact the membership office for further clarification. Last but not least, I’d like to make a few food and beverage announcements. Jeffrey Sacchet has reached out to the ABOG in an attempt to solve an on-going logistics problem that has developed at the Conservatory. With the expanded level of golf play at the Conservatory, it has become essential that the Club re-evaluate the food and beverage service element at that location. The Clubhouse in its present state is a limited facility without the support of a full service restaurant, kitchen and bar. Food and beverage service is confined to the café as a quick service pick up window option. Service in this facility is unable to expand beyond the borders of the café. It is basically the same service model as the Ocean Course Hammock House. As such, the membership office has emailed a list of guidelines to be followed at the Conservatory which they hope will allow them to provide attentive service to all the members choosing to eat on the golf courses. As always, we encourage your constructive feedback. Suggestions and comments can be emailed to me at bobbuonaiuto@yahoo.com or Marianne Murphy at mmurphy@hammockbeach.com.

golf t i p We tend to give many areas of our golf swing attention, such as grip and backswing, but rarely do we focus on our finish. A proper finish is crucial in hitting a great golf shot. When we finish correctly, our weight is transferred to the middle of our left foot, the left knee is slightly flexed, and our belt buckle is pointing slightly left of our target. Our hands are the same height as our ears or a little above. The proper transfer of weight to the left foot will help us to maximize our distance, so make sure that your weight is transferring to the ball of your left foot. If you are not sure that you are finishing properly, try this drill. Simply hold your finish position until the ball lands. Once the ball lands, try to lift up your right (or back foot). This will give you a very good idea whether or not you are properly shifting your weight to your left foot. If you are not completely satisfied with your ball striking lately, make a better effort to swing to your finish!

The “No Man’s Land” is the area of the tennis court between the baseline and service line. One of the most frequent mistakes at the Club level is standing in this area too long. Often, players wander into this part of the court unknowingly and don’t realize it until they’ve lost the point.

One of the main reasons to avoid staying in the “No Man’s Land” is because that is where most balls bounce during play. If you’re caught standing inside the “No Man’s Land” and the opponent hits their shot deep, you may be caught hitting off your back leg (figure 1). Not only will you be totally off balance, but your shot will have very little power. Another common situation that occurs when a player strays into the “No-Man’s Land” is they get caught having to make a difficult deep court volley (figure 2). Volleys made from this far back in the court are relatively ineffective as you are forced to hit from a low position. Ideally, it is best to position and set up your points from behind the baseline (figure 3). Even if your opponent hits with good depth, you would only have to marginally give ground. In the event that your opponent hits short, move forward and hit an aggressive shot (figure 4). From there, you can advance towards the net and position yourself IN the service boxes for an offensive volley. Remember, it is fine to move into the “No-Man’s Land” to hit a ball, but the key element is not to remain there. Do your best to appropriately position yourself before and after your shots and conquering the “No-Man’s Land” will be no sweat!

GOLF STRETCHING FOR THE TEE B O X A N D P R I O R T O T H E 1 9 TH H O L E Part 2, continued from the Feb 2013 newsletter B Y T H O R H O L M , D I R E C T O R O F S PA , R E C R E AT I O N & F I T N E S S The following exercises are intended to help you prepare for Golf and are not intended to replace a regular regimen of exercise or flexibility training. You will with consistent application of these techniques find that you will become more flexible. Caution: If you have any health concerns please consult your physician before proceeding. If at any time during these exercises your feel any pain or discomfort STOP IMMEDIATELY and seek medical advice. Point of Stretch: The point of stretch is different for each person in terms of degrees but the feeling should be the same. The point of stretch is that point where you begin to feel discomfort but not pain, as you become more and more flexible the area you are stretching will require more movement in the direction of the stretch to reach the point of stretch. Proceed slowly but do proceed because the benefits will enable you to enjoy your round of golf and perform better Golf from the ground up!: These exercises are noted in a particular order to reflect the importance of building your swing from the ground up. While stretching is important prior to your round it is vital after. All of the areas are utilized and contracted upwards of 150 times a round with practice swings and the driving range over a 4 hour time frame. To shut down and not lengthen the muscles after all that would be shame. Once you get this routine down you should be able to complete it in 6 minutes.

Golf Stretching on the Tee: Part Two Core/Obliques: Stand with your feet slightly over shoulder width apart holding your driver behind your back as illustrated. Keep your torso upright and bend the knees slightly turn slowly to your right until you reach the point of stretch then hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite side. Shoulder/Triceps: Hold your driver as illustrated in position A, gently pull the Club up with the hand on top until you reach the point of stretch and hold for twenty seconds. Keeping the same grip gently pull the Club down with the lower hand until you reach the point of stretch then hold for twenty seconds, repeat both positions for the opposite side.

Forearms/Supinated: Extend your right arm with your palm up and grasp your fingers with your left hand and gently pull the fingers of your right hand until you reach the point of stretch and hold for twenty seconds, repeat for the opposite side. Forearms/Pronated: Extend your right arm with the palm down and grasp the back of the right hand with your left and gently bend it down until you reach the point of stretch and then hold for twenty seconds, repeat for the opposite side.

beach livin g | 17

Rear Deltoids: Reach over your left shoulder with your right hand and using your left hand catch your right elbow and gently guide it to the point of stretch, hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite side.

Neck: Standing with your feet shoulder width apart grasp your left hand behind your back with your right hand now relax the upper body and slowly tilt your head to the right while holding the left hand in place until you reach the point of stretch. Hold for twenty seconds and repeat for the opposite side.
