elcome to the 36th Annual Kentucky Book Fair! We are delighted to welcome you to the Commonwealth’s premier literary event. While much has changed about the Book Fair over the past couple of years — including a new city and a new venue this year — one thing has not, and that is the impressive group of authors from near and far who will be in attendance. In addition to the more than 180 writers you will encounter, we are offering an incredible line-up of captivating speakers and presenters and the electric atmosphere has never been better. We hope you enjoy your day at Alltech Arena, meeting and interacting with authors from across the country. I imagine you will find writers you have been reading for years in attendance, while discovering new favorites throughout the day. I have long been a fan of this Kentucky treasure, having experienced the Book Fair as a patron and then a participating author in past years. This year has been my first look behind-the-scenes of the event and it has been eye opening to see first-hand the time, resources, and preparation that goes into planning an event of this magnitude. For all of us at Kentucky Humanities, and the many volunteers who make the Kentucky Book Fair possible, it is a labor of love. And we hope that our efforts continue to make those who began this literary event so many years ago proud. In addition to the schedule, this catalog includes everything you need to plan your day at the Kentucky Book Fair. You can also find additional information on our website, kyhumanities.org. We have a wide variety of speakers and panel discussions planned throughout the day, so be sure to check out the Schedule of Events on page 11 to ensure you don’t miss a thing! If you haven’t yet experienced a Kentucky Chautauqua® performance, I would encourage you to visit the Main Stage at 10 a.m. to see one of our new Chautauqua dramas — Virgil Covington, Jr. portrays William Wells Brown who was born a slave in Kentucky and escaped to freedom to become the first African American author and playwright. It is a fascinating story. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many sponsors, partners, and supporters who helped make this year’s event possible: Kosair Charities’ Face It® initiative, Lindsey Wilson College, Spalding University, Berea College, Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, Centre College, the Snowy Owl Foundation, Brown-Forman, Campbellsville University, Alice Lloyd College, Graviss McDonald’s, KCTCS, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, Rory Harris, Sullivan University, VisitLex, the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Kentucky Monthly, the University of Kentucky College of Arts & Sciences, and the University Press of Kentucky. We are grateful for your partnership, allowing us to share the Kentucky Book Fair with the citizens of the Commonwealth. Here’s to Kentucky Book Fair 36! We look forward to seeing you at the Fair!

2017 KBF KIDS DAY

Seventh Annual KBF Kids Day Welcomes Record Number of Kentucky Students For the seventh year, the Kentucky Book Fair will officially begin with KBF Kids Day, Friday, November 17th. This day-long event is open to Kentucky schools, and gives hundreds of students the opportunity to interact with local and national authors and scholars through a series of presentations, all for the cost of a field trip. Ordinarily, these author programs would cost schools upwards of $500 each, but we offer them for free. Our travel grants help schools further, by offsetting field trip costs — buses, drivers, gas, lunches, substitute teachers, etc. — for participating schools. In 2016, more than 500 students in grades 3-8 participated in 20 different author programs. Our Master Class featured Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Wake Forest professor Maria Henson, who presented a modified version of her Journalism 101 class to nearly 300 high school students. Nineteen schools attended from 18 counties as far west as Hopkins County and as far east as Carter County.

For 2017, more than 1,000 students in grades 3-12 have registered from 22 schools in 18 counties. Elementary and middle grade students will participate in two interactive programs with authors, and one optional activity with the Kentucky Horse Park Educational Program. Thanks to a partnership with Kosair Charities® and their Face It® initiative, this year’s high school Master Class will feature Erin Merryn, a child sexual abuse survivor who helped create a law protecting child sexual abuse victims. By sharing and overcoming the trauma of her abuse, Merryn has been nationally-recognized as “A Voice for the Voiceless.” Kentucky Humanities and Face It are also sponsoring a PSA contest for participating high school students. Registered classes can submit a 30-60 second video PSA on how they are a voice for the voiceless. Two winners will be chosen and interviewed by Erin Merryn on the Master Class stage, in front of their peers, and all submitted PSAs will be shown during lunch.

KENTUCKY READS

Kentucky Humanities Introduces Kentucky Reads, a Statewide Celebration of All the King’s Men in 2018 Kentucky Humanities is proud to announce Kentucky Reads, a new program that focuses on how the public can relate great literature to modern life and current events. Beginning in April 2018, Kentucky Humanities will begin a nine-month celebration of All the King’s Men, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Kentucky native Robert Penn Warren. All the King’s Men is widely considered one of the best novels of the 20th century. Published in 1946, it received the Pulitzer Prize in 1947, and was later made into a film that received the 1949 Academy Award for Best Picture. The novel’s setting and plot were inspired by the life and death of Huey Long, the populist governor and senator assassinated in the Louisiana State Capitol in 1935, when Warren was teaching at Louisiana State University. Although Warren wrote the novel with themes of nihilism, the nature of time, and the consequences of a person’s actions in mind more than politics, Huey Long and his right hand man, journalist Jack Burden, serve as a ready-made analogy for the conflicting yet interconnected worlds of politics and news.

Although it has been 70 years since the novel won the Pulitzer Prize, All the King’s Men continues to strike a chord with readers, in an age of populism and identity politics, Twitter feeds, spin control and “fake news,” and the decline in consumption of print and television news. Through a wide range of activities, Kentucky Humanities and its partners will guide a statewide conversation on the novel’s insights into contemporary populism, political discourse, and new flows of information. This extensive project includes mini-grants for statewide book discussions, public forums on what All the King’s Men can teach us about the relationship between journalism and politics today, a new book and keynote address on All the King’s Men from Northern Kentucky University professor Jonathan Cullick at the 2018 Kentucky Book Fair, and the premiere of a new documentary on Robert Penn Warren, produced by award-winning filmmaker Tom Thurman and Kentucky Educational Television, followed by a discussion of Warren’s legacy.
