conversion & restoration

01

The main objective of the thesis “New use for the industrial complex Kapsimalis in Lesvos is the restoration of the old complex and its conversion to a new use as a student accommodation complex. The industrial complex Kapsimalis is located in Panagiouda, a small village about 6 km away from the city of Mytilene and 10 km away from the University of the Aegean. The complex was built early in the 20th century (1900-1905), during the period of industrial growth in the island of Lesvos. It occupies a total area of 2,916 sqm and in the past housed the industrial functions of oil press, soap factory and tannery. The complex, which includes 11 individual buildings, is not currently in very good condition; except for one building that has been restored and now operates as a restaurant, the buildings seem to collapse progressively. The main principle followed on the restoration is to give a contemporary feel to the memory of the old building through the building lines and volumes of the complex. Based on this, the interventions and the materials used are defined by the current degree of deterioration of the buildings. Finally, the introversion and the extroversion are important factors in the restoration proposal. The introversion, met as a general feature of industrial buildings in Lesvos, is also repeated in the operation of the new student residences.

housing & urban design

02

The aim of this project was to design a new addition to the city of Chalkida. The area we were asked to design was a former military base that was going to be incorporated into the city. There were specific guidelines regarding the different uses planned for this undeveloped piece of land. The main factor that we took into consideration when starting to lay out our urban plan, was the fact that this vacant lot was in the water, right behind a sailboat marina. We decided to create a network of streets leading to the sea, offering unobstructed views of water. Our goal was to use this new section of the city as a connection with the water and the waterfront. In that base, we organized the residential areas closer to the existing city and the wider waterfront was designed as a public area that included all the commercial, educational and cultural uses. That was the basis of our design approach.

WorkShop: FASHION-MARKET-SHOWS

During the Architectural Studio 7 and 8, which last 2 semesters, the students in School of Architecture NTUA have to design a building with multiple functions and public character, giving special attention to its integration into the urban environment. The purpose of these Studios is a complete architectural work, which includes plans from scale 1:500 to construction details in 1:10. With my partner, we designed a building in a central location of Athens. According to our scenario, the building accommodate a company looking for new talented fashion designers. Workshops and Market are the two principles. A big room for fashion shows and conferences, a cafĂŠ and a plaza complete the design. The expansion in height and the vertical structure of the building, the public movement and the gathering spaces and finally the problem solving of interior circulation played important role in the designing approach. During the Architectural Studio 7 we designed the whole building until the scale 1:200 and the next semester we focused to the biggest and most complicated part of the building, to solve it to the final degree and the construction details. Parameters such as the construction materials, the colours and the lighting were significant for the final project elaboration.

THE INDUSTRIAL LESVOS OF THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY

In general, the aim of this architectural studio is to design a light construction. During designing, emphasis is laid on the simplicity of construction and the use of common materials such as wood and metal. Constructions are supported by a theoretical concept, which defines the technological principle and the connection approach of materials. In that particular project we had to design a mountain refuge with an area of about 3sqm that would be placed on a hillside with 50% incline. The purpose of that small building is to offer rest and warmth to the passing mountain climbers and also a good viewpoint as an observation tower for the forest rangers in the summer months, when the fire risk increases. The main factor that we took into consideration when starting to lay out our design, was the widest visibility. We decided to create in plan an isosceles trapezium with an opened but covered balcony in the front and we gave a small incline to the rooftop aiming to the widest view and also the drain of the rain. The selected material is wood with metal connections.

THE INDUSTRIAL LESVOS OF THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY

The thesis project in the School of Architecture in the NTUA is part of the 9th semester. The students choose a topic of their interest and specialization. After the research and analysis, they have to print their thesis on a book and give a lecture in front of the examination board and audience for about 45 minutes, presenting their thesis project, and afterwards follows discussion and questions on the topic. The industrial development of Lesvos took place in the 19th and 20th century. The economic apex of the past left a substantial industrial heritage. If that heritage is managed effectively in the future, it will allow the “Industrial Lesvos of the 19th and 20th century to survive. This study presents the industrial buildings and the production processes of the past, the present condition of those industrial buildings and some general directions for the future of the industrial heritage of Lesvos.

Molyvos

The book “Industrial Lesvos of the 19th and 20th century”, which counts 123 pages, was based on literature and fieldwork. The fieldwork was the most important part of the research, because of the peculiarity of the topic that required much time in and around the buildings. The present situation of the buildings can show us the history and the architecture of the past century, that leave us a heritage to protect.

PROFILE PAGES HOMEPAGE

06 LOCALIZE ME

The project “Localize me” was a student business plan for an innovative idea about a startup company. I have been asked to design the logo and the basic pages, homepage and profile pages, of the new website by three Marketing students of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (NL). The concept of “Localize me” is community marketplace that connects travelers and locals around the world in order to offer tailor made travel experiences curated by locals as well as tips and insights. The target audience of the website would be ages 18-45, therefore a more colorful but also simple design were chosen. The logo with the combination of the earth and the popular “check-in” icon expresses clearly the type of the services that the website offers. In general, a frisky but also clean-cut design with extra bold colors on the photos complete the design approach.
