ABOUT ME
Greetings! My name is Maria Theophanous and I am an architect with an interest in architectural dialogs with timber; from the conceptual to the technological, I enjoy the detailing and the experimenting with the flexibility and lightness of this material that is both soft and robust, warm and adaptive, historical but contemporary, and hides a multiplicity of possibilities. Having graduated from the Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention at UmeĂĽ University I have become familiar with the architectural language of Sweden which, combined with my previous experience allows me to consider myself a valuable candidate for employment.

A.01/2013 PRIVATE RESIDENCE RENOVATION & ADDITION, NICOSIA //Proposal stage. //Leading architect. //125sqm existing + 145sqm additional covered area. In this project a young couple requested a proposal for renovating a traditional old house from the previous century, in an area next to the heart of Nicosia. The task was to respect the original structure, its materiality, the premises and the form of it, and to add an new extension towards the backyard. In its entirety it would accommodate one family. The facade of the old structure had suffered the most severe alterations and destructions, mainly at the entrance. The mosaic-tiled floor, the stone walls and the
14
wood framed roof with tiles had suffered fewer interventions. The task was to design the common and social spaces in the existing double-height rooms, while using a light structure to create a buffer zone, housing the main staircase and leading to the ‘every-day’ functions of the house.

//173sqm covered area. The house is divided into two cores, as the client had asked for a clear separation of the private and semi-private functions. When entering through the main

gate, a series of panels block views into the courtyard. The user can then chose to enter into he private quarters on his left, or the kitchen/living area on his right. The sloping of the site allowed for the house to be designed on three different levels, enhancing even further the separation of functions. Because of safety issues in the area, all the rooms have their large openings turned towards a central courtyard

The clients are a young couple with a small child and plans to have more family members in the future. The site was not specifically selected by the clients because the land has been ‘offered’ as help by the state to young couples coming from at least one war-immigrant parent. Based on its nature it had been handled to me as an architect with certain specifications/ regulations, such as maximum meters inside the perimeter, height and covered square meters, and other. site with the clients and note their personal needs and requests for their future home. This approach leaded to one way of placing the two main facades south and west and the secondary or less exposed towards the north and east. Conceptually I adjusted a form that was created through a push/ pull method on a cube, while that emerged having a double height base. The shape itself was to be
22
oriented based on natural light and locality. In order to achieve the maximum openness while allowing for enough privacy, the uses were zoned based on the owners’ lifestyle. Alongside on sketching draft proposals, a list of regulations had to be followed. At this phase the collaboration with the civil engineer started to secure the structural dynamics of the final proposal.
The final stage of my involvement was to decide on interior finishes, lighting and fixed furniture.
Having agreed on the final proposal with the clients, the architectural and structural drawings were completed and delivered to the local town planning authority for approval. Selecting the appropriate offer of tender began immediately after approval; and by that the construction began. This phase is the longest and the most complex one.

SYNOPSIS
Through my experiential encounters within nature another enlightening monumentality appeared. It is this other image of monumentality - beyond the gaze of geometrical perspective - that I like to investigate and capitalize upon. This master thesis project aims to explore monumentality through landscape architecture at specific sites that are situated around the forest areas in the North of Sweden. The project investigates what kind of form(ations) of monumentality, along a trajectory; through, in and along the Norrland forest, can be developed through the different experiential perspectives of human agency.
What kind of freedom(s) can a visitor experience encountering the monumental qualities nature triggers?
[Map of Norrland with routes and places of interest]
The experienced (and developed) trajectory with its elements (towers, platforms) becomes an alternative design tool, a catalyst, which challenges the traditional relationship of the designer-client and the conventional role of the tourist, through a participatory practice where science, researchers and locals meet.
Monumentality – particularly
in the past – is primarily built upon historical events, expressed in architecture and landscape architecture through the design of monuments that represent the political and cultural movements of certain periods.
In Norrland the land is sparsely populated and the forest with lakes and rivers occupy the vast majority of the area. Here, the natural elements are the primary ‘ingredients’ of an ‘other’ monumentality. This thesis challenges and
40
contradicts the traditional notion of monumentality, with the use of two particular tools: the path and the observatory (the tower) that materialize through the experience of human interaction and collaboration that uses local knowledge and expertise. This research project starts from Umeå, following a trajectory to reach Abisko, a village at the Northwest edge of Sweden, in search of the experiential monumentality; the ‘other’ monumentality. The view, the landscape, the reflection of the sun on the frozen lake; are all elements where human activity meets the animal paths, where human culture intersects with nature. This notion contradicts the type of architecture that shelters an informative exhibition, attracting all kinds of visitors from the urban enclave, forcing them to step further and introducing the idea of the path and the
observatory. It reverses glass boxes of stuffed animals to an experience of new monumentality. Here the bird is alive in its natural environment and the human has the privilege to experience this moment, positioning himself on an observatory platform and exposing himself to the elements.
The path is a cultural artery
that allows a connection between the human and the nature to occur. It is a tool that initiates people into an experience of ‘the other’ monumentality. It meets the observatory at its end, where it circulates and shifts from a horizontal movement to a vertical path. The observatory structure becomes a new form of an “exhibition”, a point of vantage and of exploration that connects the individual with the forest and its elements through a minimally invasive interaction with its surroundings.

Grössjöns nature reserve is located within a walking distance of 6km from the centre of Umeå, and one can find fine cloudberry mires and an old forest around a small bird-lake. Grössjön is a shallow bird lake where you can get to know the horned grebe and wood sandpiper. Great Blomstermyran is one of the few coastal swamps, that is extremely rich in species. “I left the bike and started walking on the marked snow-ice. I was walking on a cross-country ski route. I wanted to continue more but I stopped. It was an open mark with trees around it. I was standing in the middle of the distance to reach the trees, holding my breath to be able to listen. I felt that the birds and the other animals were right behind the trees and looking at me. I was now alone and far away from my comfort zone...”

Tower; A Freedom Icon Both a metaphorical and literal ‘translation’ of the hunting tower, the tower becomes an essential part of this micro landscape, an element of its network that is an extension of the horizontal path in its verticality. It is monumental (as a manmade structure that stands tall in the woods) without over imposing, creating a conversation with its surroundings and becoming a point of attraction while maintaining the ‘freedom’ and flexibility to do so. Its ephemeral character allows it to escape the confinement of long term or complex laws and regulations. The tower enables different kinds of experiences to come together. As a symbol of freedom (of movement and experience) and coexistence (with the natural) it has the ability to hold a position within the forest and cooperate with other ‘free’ towers.

CONCLUSION
The choreography (development) of the path/tower becomes a participatory act that forms the main component of my urban praxis; it is a strategy that counteracts the neoliberal consumption of the landscape, the popular touristic experience, and forms an engaging experience. Through participation we have the opportunity of creating stronger memories, real places in real time to high potentials of monumental experience. This can be achieved by ‘being within’, by contributing and leaving our personal impact to join a network with bonds of common grounds. The experienced (and developed) trajectory with its elements (towers, platforms) challenges the traditional relationship of the designer-client and the conventional role of the tourist, through a participatory practice where science, researchers and locals meet.
B.02/2016 9th SEMESTER LiAi RESEARCH COLLABORATION & BOOK RELEASE: “SWEDISH HOUSING: (re) searching for common life” This publication is a research report and forms a part of the LiAi fifth year studio work for the autumn/winter semester 2015-2016. part of Manifesto: “Why Common Life? Because it is the part of our lives that is shared, not always intentionally. So with whom do we share our lives and to what extent? The common life we dream includes the notions of sharing, displacing and caring. It is about a life of coexistence with whom or what we define as “The Other”. Common experiences are not controlled by the individual and might have unexpected outcomes, which should be embraced and encouraged.”

B.03/2015 TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP: TWO MOVEABLE PUBLIC SAUNAS, UMEÅ
//Dates: 23 - 27 February 2015 //Participants: Sami Rintala (Guest architect) //Alberto Altés (Program director) Josep Garriga Tarrés (Teaching assistant) //LiAi 8 Students (2015): Victor Berg, Ioulia Eleftheriadou, Géza Fischl, Måns Lundberg, Alla Onopchenko, Gabriela de Arruda Pinheiro, Rogier Rouwet, Egle Rutkauskaite, Jessie Svensson, Maria Theofanous During the last week of February of 2015 LiAi teachers and students run a technology workshop at Umeå School of Architecture. The task was to sketch and design on basic dimensions two moveable public saunas, build them and test them, in five days. As a group of master students we

had the opportunity to work with Sami Rintala, an internationally known Finnish architect. The focus of the workshop was the learning process during construction, rather that spending more time on giving solutions during the design phase. This approach provided us with ad-hoc technical skills and knowledge that can be applied to an unlimited number of uses. “What would it be like to build a (truly) public sauna for the city again?” The idea to build the saunas was conceived to be a gift to all and people had the opportunity to ‘bastu’ until June 2015.

B.04/2010 THESIS PROJECT: “THESSALONIKI DESIGN MUSEUM” University Of Thessaly Department Of Architecture Supervisors:
Evelyn GavrilouR4
Giorgos Triantafillidis Students: Cleoniki Fotiadou Maria Theophanous This thesis project deals with the planning of a “design museum” at Nea Paralia (New Seafront), in Thessaloniki. It is a result of a suggestion for housing a collection that was created by Mr. Stergios Delialis nineteen years ago, but it is still remains private. This stunning collection currently comprises of more than 3.500 design items and 6000 books that refer to the industrial design of the 20th century.

The chosen building plot belongs to the municipality. It has a triangular shape and it is designated at ‘greenery area’, at the end of the ‘Nea Paralia’ in Thessalonika. It is surrounded by important cultural buildings and it is right next to the “Macedonia Palace” hotel. The main consideration for the planning of the plot was the maintenance of the majority of the green area. The main effort was to combine the natural with
the structural environment. The architectural composition of the building was based on the topography characteristics and the study of the surrounding plots. The design of the building was carried out by two basic axes: the flow of movements for the museum was executed based on the sense of ‘immersion’ and the gradual development around a large central atrium, while the main concept of the enlargement of the museum
was based on the sense of “exhibit on a pedestal”. As far as the structure is concerned, the first two floors, which are the base of the building, constitute a heavy structure made of concrete and the third overhead floor is a steel construction that forms a lighter structure than the base. The main facilities of the museum are: permanent and temporary exhibitions, foyer am-

phitheater, digital screens, library, cafe-restaurant and workshop room with space for an outdoor exhibition. The purpose of including a workshop is to give an interactive character to the museum and yet to ignite the interest of young people for the concept of “design”. Thus, a place of studying and regular approach of new designing products will be created in Thessaloniki.
B.05/2008 MATERIALS & PROCESSES: “PAVILION PROPOSAL IN TOSCANI //Spring semester, third year. //Teamwork with Cleoniki Fotiadou. This workshop emphasizes on the use of materials as origins of architectural design. The aim is the experimentation on procedures of reforming materials. The scale is reversed and the detail 1:1 is the initial stage of the architectural design. The selected material, is the Swedish wood and specifically the Swedish pine planks. The research involves the properties and techniques of the material manufacturing process. The final project concerns the design of the INFOPOINT pavilion stand for the 23rd Congress of Architecture in Torino in 2008.

characteristics of both ideas. Thus, obtained an architectural proposal that the idea of ‘openness’/ open to public towards a shift to less public/private reading zones, from the ground floor to escalate to the top floor. Engaging with the site, a corner were two main streets meet, we considered that a foyer with glass structure and an indoor ‘full high’ wall allowed multiple accesses, views and circulations to happen.

EPILOGUE Today I am living in Stockholm and learning Swedish while exploring the city and the south part of Sweden. I enjoy photography and exploring local tastes wherever I travel, either for short or longer periods of time. As an architect I am currently working on a new project; designing an alternative gym with a focus on climbing, based in Cyprus. The client is a small group of young climbing enthusiasts who are trained in outdoor activities. Thank you for taking time to read my cv and portfolio. Please feel free to contact me with any kind of suggestions, questions or simply if you are interested to meet me in person! Warm regards, Maria
