WAM

WAM Architecten Delft | The Netherlands

Period: February 2013 - July 2013 Director: Wilfried van Winden http://www.wam-architecten.nl/

Working six months in The Netherlands was a lifechanging experience. I found myself in an office of four people, where I experienced equal treatment and responsibility. I easily adapted to the culture of the country and to the style of the office in particular. Learning new regulations and data for the constructive industry, was an opportunity to broaden my knowledge. I experienced different approach to architectural concepts and realisations in all scales, from furniture to residential and commercial projects. Due to the small size of the company, I was undertaking all kind of responsibilities for the architectural part of a study, including its management and marketing. Now I feel confident to deal with any type of work in all the environments.

Revisit_Customizing Tourism 13th Venice Biennale 2012 NATIONAL PARTICIPATION OF CYPRUS Curators: Charis Christodoulou | Spyros Th. Spyrou REVISIT expresses the idea of rethinking tourism in order to reexamine, redesign, reform and reuse: architecture provides a new approach to tourism for alternative answers to the aforementioned issues through processes concerning regeneration and sustainability. Within the framework of the topic of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia given by David Chipperfield, REVISIT investigates the conditions of common grounds related to tourism in Cyprus and explores alternative answers to questions raised from these conditions that may empower the idea of common ground. How can tourism infrastructure - a key factor for urbanization and development in Cyprus - be redesigned and redirected with architectural means in order to bring people together on a common ground? Tourism is readdressed for the regeneration of public space, stimuli of interaction, creation of networks - spatial and social - and sustainability of the cities. Ultimately, REVISIT explores architectural concepts that may upgrade the tourism product and at the same time regenerate the constructed space for locals.

REVISIT Project: 4 H(OUR) LOCALS Team UCY 03: Maria Prodromou | Maria Prokopiou Noting the phenomenon of the limited time tourists spend when they visit Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, the largest in terms of population and the only major urban area not to be located on the coastline, has been the driving force behind this proposal. Typically, tourists are transported from their resorts on the coast to this capital region for limited period of four hours and with the sole purpose of visiting important spots in what may be termed “landmark hoping”, driven on their bus from one to the other or having these landmarks pointed out to them by a tour guide in the bus itself as they are speedily zooming around the city. In this manner they very rarely get a chance to develop a real sense of place or to draw a holistic and consistent mental map of these disparate locations and the all important journey from one to the other, rubbing elbows with the local population and occupying the common ground that holds both groups of users. This proposal attempts to map connecting routes between nodes and landmarks in the city that are used by both locals and visitors. Through opportunistic spatial interventions on the way from one to the other it attempts to slow down the pace and to encourage opportunities for pause, interaction and collective activity. Various urban design tools come into play and they deal with each case specifically to enhance the strengths and to overcome the weaknesses in particular spatial configurations in order to create milder or wilder event places that will help colour the overall experience of both groups of uses, whether urban or tour-ban, will help turn it into a memorable experience and last but not least enhance the spatial awareness cohesion of this mental picture of the city.

Water Temple Pavilion

Slovenia 2012 | MEDS (Meeting of Design Students) Team: Maria Prodromou (CY), Agata Madurowicz (PL), Agata Motyka (PL), Andreas Von Knobloch (IE), Catriona Kinghorn (UK), Florence Declaveillere (FR), Irem Karadeniz (TU), Kieran Donnellan (IE), Luca Giacobazzi (IT), Sarah Mogensen (DK), Valerio Bianchi (IT), Zsolt Sarkadi (HU) Member of TWELVEPLUS team, who build WATER TEMPLE, a temporary exhibition pavilion located in a narrow riverside park in Ljubljana. The concept was inspired by the history of the Ljubljanica river, and in particular the change over time in the ways that locals interact with it. The elliptical shape of the interior was an experiment with the amplification of sound. An ellipse has two focal points, and any sound that occurs in the interior within certain directions will be loudest at those points.

cube_me Nausicaa Pavilion INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Team: smART_studio [Maria Prodromou | Stavros Voskaris]

| 12 |

The goal of this competition was to design and develop an Information Point (visitor centre) which would not be over 21m2 and would have elements of the Mediterranean Culture. So firstly we researched the culture and architecture that we find in the Mediterranean, the materials that were used in the past as well as the ways with which they dealt with the weather conditions. Consequently we opted to use rock and wood as our basic materials for the construction of pavilion. First and foremost this was because they are materials that are used in dry construction, which was one of the things the competition asked for, but also because these were the basic materials Mediterranean countries used in their architecture. For us it was important to be able to construct pavilion easily and quickly and simultaneously to follow some of the principles of bioclimatic designing, something we find in many traditional buildings in the Mediterranean.

Educate Through Work High School in Nicosia Semester: 8th | Architecture Design VIII Tutor: Aimilios Michael Team: Maria Prodromou | Elena Constanti

The proposal was about an alternative high school which had as a main aim the combination of work experience with the standard educational methodology. Other than the typical classrooms, the program contains cooking, fashion design, graphic design and handcraft workshops, in order for the students to interact with the public and with the ideas of trade and exchange.

3 An important criterion of the design was the existence of several army office blocks in the plot. The school classes were housed in them, due to the repetitive orthonormal character that they have. The workshops, the public market and some exhibition spaces, penetrate the plot with a new organism of timber and glass combination.

Into Cone Interfaith Centre

Semester: 7th | Architecture Design VII Tutor: Theoharis David Team: Maria Prodromou

| 24 |

Having an interfaith centre next to an important mosque in the city, is certainly a matter that you consider carefully. The design had as a main aim to keep the plot as an open socialization space and interconnecting it with the front and the back yard of the mosque acting as an urban park. Furthermore as a result of this decision, the interfaith moved under the earth level exploiting the darkness, the smell, the texture of the ground working as technical isolation. Important points of the design are the cones of different sizes and angles that control the light penetration into the interfaith giving you the chance to interact with the natural character of light and ground. At the upper part of the interfaith, a park is created with the cones acting as sculptures giving shadow and creating resting points for the pedestrians.

Semester: 6th | Architecture Design VI Tutor: Marios C. Phocas Team: Maria Prodromou | Vania Athinodorou The building is treated as an urban hub, as a magnet of movements from the bustling marina and a passage/ diffusion of these movements to the dead until now port. The aim was to enable the port and convert it from a private space into something more public and socially engaging. From a synthetic point of view, we are dealing with an ellipse, which is divided into eight sectors that can accommodate both functional and green spaces. The shell creates a special interest as it is composed of louvers, which filter the light and optics and can be changed from the users depending on their desires.

(Sol)ibrary University Library

The main aim of the project was making a building that could operate autonomously without additional systems that will provide cooling and heating. This building is a library, which has a transformable roof that helps the light and air penetrate the central atrium and to create its permanent thermal comfort, we use the

Thermosiphon panels outside of the building envelope: -It consists of glass, air gap and dark metal surface bearing outer insulation. -Generally is placed below the main areas of the building at an angle of approximately 50 째 (to have the rays of the sun almost vertical during the winter). -The heat collected from the air gap, is transported via pipeline with a flow either directly to the building, or to the heat store from which gradually it is distributed to the sites.

The proposed building unit is composed of three subunits, where the first and the third will be stable while the second one will be variable (reference of accordion). This proposal aims to construct a building that is intuitive, flexible and easily transported in different places depending on the needs of each report. The above objectives were achieved by using a device that allows the connection of individual parts and their components, in such a way that allows the building to wrap and fold.

Dividing Exhibition Adjustable Space

Parameters - size & shape of plot - curvature of road - lightning - number of divided spaces - size & shape of exhibits

| 36 |

Semester: 6th | Parametric Design Tutor: Odysseas Kontovourkis Team: Maria Prodromou | Vania Athinodorou This study involves parametric design and how that gives new opportunities to architectural design. The idea was the creation of a flexible design which will accommodate transient exhibitions; it will be able to move to different locations and be adjusted each time to the land where it would be sited, always following the curvature of the road or turning, etc. depending on location. Each time the building is divided into individual spaces it creates new experiences, with both narrow corridors succeeding wider ones, and smaller openings that create rays of light through the small narrow corridors. At those points the visitor can be closer to the exhibit, creating new relations with it in a more enclosed space with interesting shadows.
