RECON[FORM]ATION Academic. Graduate 2016 Individual Project Position Landscape and technology Topic Manhattan, NY Location To design a building able to blend culture and nature Objective Pratt institute. Directors: Thomas Leeser /Jason Vignery Bene. Thesis Studio Context
The project is located in Manhattan on the waterfront over the Hudson River. The proposal is conceived as a public floating park which uses a reconformation strategy as dynamic input. The park is envisioned as a performative landscape where a close relationship with the inhabitants of the city is encouraged by the use of responsive and dynamic spatial strategies. Inspired on a swarm system, reconformation is a strategy that looks for reconfiguration but has an unconventional way to deliver it. It is based on the idea of the reconfiguration of the matter. Therefore, it is an ephemeral architecture made by small elements which present changes in their spatial arrangement to adopt multiple forms. Reconformation is a strategy for spatial flexibility and also it is a responsive system which performs according to user’s necessities and environmental conditions. G EN ER AT I VE

The reconformation is an automated strategy composed by smart units. Conceptually, these units are a population of agents that follow rules of self-organization. Technically, these objects are robots that have electro-mechanic characteristic which allow them to move autonomously guided by a computational program. Architectonically, these elements are pieces that form different surfaces. These units act in relation of a fixed ground that serves as a board where they can detect targets to follow. There are two types of smart units; a flying unit which has the ability to fly as a drone and is used for air conformation such as walls or covers, and a floating unit which stays floating in the water and moves around to create ground conformations, also, this last one has an hydraulic mechanism to construct various kinds of floors and furniture by changing the slope of its upper face.

SYNTHETIC NEST Academic. Graduate 2015 Individual Project Position Design of a Film Festival Hall Topic Antalya, Turkey Location To design a building able to blend culture and nature Objective Pratt institute. Director: Sulan Kolatan. Fall Studio Context
This project intent to provide a new hall for the International Orange Film Festival that takes place in Antalya Turkey once a year. Due to the fact that Antalya is a region with exceptional natural landscapes and biodiversity and at the same time with amazing history as well as important tourism activity, the aim of this project is to combine the cultural and natural richness of the city. Among the animal wealth that this region has, the biodiversity in bird’s species is a remarkable aspect. Taking this into account, this project seeks to create a building able to host bird species by follow natural forms. Therefore the project proposes a light and extense cover that contains the entire program inside, serving at the same time as synthetic nest.

The program inside is hybrid and fill many purposes. The movie theater for the awards ceremony of the film festival is the main space. Under this structure a series of spaces for cultural and learning activities take place. The building is viewed as an interactive space that allows a big range of events and visitors. Learning, research and entertainment can take place under this structure. The shape of this project is made by the assemblage of cells with organics shapes. Two main cells configure the entire structure, the variation in scale and density is what determines the richness of the system. Materials such as textured concrete and plastic-wood are used to simulate natural conditions. Between the main structure and the nest layer an etfe enclosure is proposed. Also vegetation is allowed to grow feely in the outside. Initial Cell

INNOVATIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - NYC Academic. Graduate 2015 Individual Project Position Design of innovative learning environments Topic Manhattan-New York City Location To design an innovative elementary school for downtown Manhattan Objective Pratt institute. Director: William MacDonald. Summer Studio Context
Taking into account the active urban environment in which this school is located, the main goal of this project is to connect the inside with the outside giving to the students the possibility to learn from the city. At the same time this rough context requires protection for the children so the building proposes mixed spatial strategies; Transparency with the outside, enclosure to the inside, continuity with the outside and protection from the outside.

Responding to an increasing demand of primary and elementary schools observed in downtown Manhattan, this project is a model of educational institutions for this area. Since 2000 until today the number of residents in the financial district has grown enormously. This situation has caused that the amount of schools located in this area results insufficient for the amount of children living there.

With the intention to provide educational spaces for the current time and for the future, the design of this school focuses on generate innovative learning environments. The spaces proposed are flexible and hybrid and the rules for its functioning can be set by the users. The methodology used in the developing of this proposal is based on the analysis of four qualities that are defined from the site in which it is located. These qualities are; Fluency, Coexistence, Resilience and Curiosity. The qualities are measured according to its intensity, and the result among the interaction of these forces is used as a base diagram for the spatial design. The geometry of this building arises from the assemblage of cells as “modular unities that shape a parametric system. This system is adaptable and has the ability to grow in time. PLAN 1

Director: Monica Gomez. Final career project studio B. final mark 5/5 Context
This project is located in a strategic area of the Bogota’s city center. The idea of a mixed device for integration is to take advantage of this location and create an urban node able to impact positively in the transformation of the city by integrating the surrounded community in order recover the broken urban structure and regenerate the deteriorated social fabric. This project it is a transportation, financial, technological, educational and cultural cluster able to encourage activity 24 hours a day. The building-bridge is a hybrid between public and private. In the street level is located the access to the multimodal station as well as the cultural and educational facilities. In the superior levels take place the offices and housing in a more private condition.

The evolution of digital tools in the architectural design practice has lead to a shift in the way of conceiving and producing architecture. Currently the language of architecture is expanding is scope and adopting a more complex repertory of forms. Advanced geometries require different ways of representation and materialization. In this sense, in the present fabrication techniques and material research are not only an interesting field but also a fundamental aspect for the successful design process development. The exposed examples were made by the use of advanced tools such as robot arms, CNC machine, 3D printers and laser cutters.

MARINILLA EDUCATIONAL PARK Professional.Architecture and Landscape 2013 Project Architect/Architectural Designer Position Built Status Marinilla, Antioquia-Colombia Location Give to the community an 800m2 space for cultural expression and training Objective Public project commissioned by the local government to El Equipo de Mazzanti Context
The project more than a building it is a public space cover up by a metallic mesh. The form of the building works as an endless system which is able to grow by connecting with other similar pieces. The main idea of this project is to promote cultural activities and encourage the community to appropriate the space. Therefore the stairs become diverse scenarios that allow the people to express in many ways. The mesh volume results in a permeable environment, is a cover linear park. When people walk through it, the vegetation is present around and there is always a close relationship between the inside and the outside. The classrooms are enclosed with red glass to make them stand out inside the volume.

The form of the project is the result of the intersection of five hexagonal modules. Each module has concentric classrooms and a circulation around a yard. The yards are covered by a pergola in a shape of hat which allows an ideal microclimate for vegetation’s grow and gives an interesting spatial sensation. This project is located in a hill that can be observed from the main areas in Cartagena. This fact makes the landscape proposal fundamental and is the reason to locate the project in the top of the hill. With such a particular location, the “hats” make the building outstand in the landscape. This circumstance makes the community to feel proud about the building.

The building is as a linear object that grows like a spiral upon itself. Two conditions are proposed. The first one it is a public condition created by the transparency that generates the rise of the volume above the public plaza. The access is located there and this creates a strong link with the city. The other is a private condition present in the first level and in the superior levels where the hospitality program is located. Also, the top of the building is used as a private garden for the recovery of the patients. The facade has two layers, a glass window and an aluminum curtain. The aluminum layer helps for the climatic comfort and reduces the noise in the interior spaces. This metallic curtain is designed with different folds that are expanded or contracted according to the light and privacy needed inside the building.

The project is a territory occupation strategy. It aims to be a sustainable occupation where productive, sport and entertainment activities are fundamental. Five types of clusters are proposed. They work as a cover or boundary but not as an enclosure of the space. Each of these is characterized by a particular way of relating with the nature and is used for different type of activities. The clusters are made of cylindrical modules grouped together.
HILL It extends the topography and generates an interior space. Inside of it takes place program that requires insulation, such as conference rooms and cinemas. FOREST It creates a second land layer supported by multiple small columns. Is an elevated surface that protects while allowing freedom access and movement.
GARDEN it is similar to a maze that allows to be explored. Also it works for farming activities. This is a transitional type cluster in the general occupation proposal.
CAVERN Uses natural depressions of the site to fill the land and create spaces. The spaces inside can be covered or uncovered open or isolated according to user’s needs. FOLIAGE It seeks to generate protection in open spaces. It creates an excavation on the ground and a canopy for activities that require protection.
