Apotheosis TRAIN STATION

paris, france architectural design studio 3 This studio course concentrates on the ways in which the nature of structural systems, including long-span structures, affects and informs architectural design. Students design projects that address tectonic and structural issues. The program is located in Paris Rive Gauche in France. Paris Rive Gauche is a part of the 13th district, which is one of the biggest district in Paris. Our site, MassĂŠna, runs alongside the Seine and with its southern boundaries marked out by Avenue de France, the MassĂŠna district is characterized by innovative urban planning. I was assisted by two Architectural Fundamental III students, Sabrina Richer and Alvaro Gutierrez.

Concept Development

Site Plan Sketches were developed to evoke the idea of layering and how it can be applied in an architectural context and form. Using Layers of skin, scale, and light; the train station will weave together an adaptable community symbol that becomes the identity and tradition of the place. The bridge became a very important component in the design to unites both sites and continue the circulation along Avenue du France. In order to achieve that motion I implemented a ramp that starts from the main entrance and continues all the way to the end of the building. It will function as an unmistakable dialect between the two sites.

Interior Perspective

Structure The structure of the building is made out of steel “I” beams in which can be bend and shape any way. What became critical was the skin of the building. I chose to use Kalwall, which is unique composite fenestration sandwich panel that combines controlled, usable, natural daylight with the ultimate in energy efficiency. It’s primary element is a structural composite sandwich panel formed by permanently bonding, under heat and pressure, specially formulated, fiberglass-reinforced translucent faces to a grid core constructed of interlocked, structural aluminum/composite, thermally broken “I” beams.

Culinary Art School of Asheville INTERNATIONAL BEACON asheville, nc architectural design studio 4 This studio course concentrates on the issues raised by creating new architecture in existing high density urban contexts with complex social and cultural characters. The program is the Culinary Arts School of Asheville located in Asheville, North Carolina. CASA is an international center for education in the production and preparation of healthy sustenance for a sustainable future. With a focus on social consciousness CASA’s mission is to educate students and the public in redefining and exploring alternatives to the present state of the food industry.

Concept Models The city of Asheville is very active, with a great focus on arts, the community, and the natural environment. From all these factors and CASA’s missions statement in mind, I developed a concept idea of engage and movement. I want my design to be unique and become a symbol of this new food movement. At the same time, the site will interact with the surrounding area and keep that active movement going. As I explored the site, I noticed some very important elements that will dictate my design process.

Jacksonville Digital Art Museum CATALYST

jacksonville, fl architectural design studio 5-6 This studio course concentrates on the issues raised by creating new architecture in existing high density urban contexts with complex social and cultural characters. The Digital Art Museum, located in Jacksonville, Florida, is dedicated to showcase and preserve digital work and illustrate how digital media shapes and impacts today’s society. The arts have always been a great influence throughout the history of Jacksonville and it has been gaining momentum during the recent years. The site, in which JDAM is located, has become disconnected from the activity that populates the downtown area of Jacksonville. In response of the lack of activity and interaction with the city, JDAM proposes avenue that will introduce a new medium of art and continue the on going movement that already exists in the city. The idea is driven by the need for a solution to the lack of interaction with the city and desire for an influence of arts, JDAM will become a catalyst that will encourage development, movement, and a sense of community to the site. In the end as a result, the goal of JDAM is to engage the public in the creating, understanding and appreciation of digital art.

ACSA/AISC Steel Competition 2012 CULINARY ARTS COLLEGE

asheville, nc steel design student competition The challenge for architecture students is to design a Culinary Arts College in an urban setting. Steel construction offers students great benefits in this endeavor, as it is ideal for covering long-spans without sacrificing flexibility and aesthetic lightness, multi-story buildings, quick delivery and assembly in congested urban environments. For this competition I reused and readapted Culinary Art School of Asheville from studio 4. As a requirement for the competition, steel must be used as the primary structural material and contain at least one space that requires long-span structure, with special emphasis placed on innovation in steel design. The designs should respond to context, climate, and culture. The Culinary Arts College will draw from local restaurants for some of its faculty and will use them to provide externships for students. “On-location sessions and walking tours will allow its students to experience everything from the behind-the-scenes action in the cities kitchens to the bustle of seasonal and farmers markets. Students will need to conduct research in the design of culinary arts educational facilities.

Structure The main structure of the building is steel I-beams and steel columns with open web joist. The I-beams and columns are exposed throughout the building. To emphasize the new food movement and engage people into the site I placed giant steel columns on the north faรงade covered in metal sheet that are anchored to the floor and roof I-beams. The north faรงade becomes the most prominent feature of the building and is the most exposed to open interaction between the city and the building. The overall building is covered with aluminum panels and perforated aluminum panels on the south facades to protect from sun exposure.

Detroit by Design 2012: Detroit Riverfront Competitio URBAN REVITALIZATION

detroit, mi architectural graduate studio 1 The competition focuses on the area between Cobo Hall and the Renaissance Center and between Jefferson Avenue and the Detroit River. This section of Riverfront which includes Hart Plaza is at the heart of the city. The site lost its prominence as the city’s town square when a new park was created a couple of block to the north. The program is direct and purposefully vague with the intention of generating creative solutions. Objective is to amaze and connect. The project presented addresses the development and redesign of the waterfront of downtown Detroit, in hopes of revitalizing pedestrian use and circulation. The vision for the waterfront includes transforming the current ‘dead’ zone into a sport and recreation district, high end retail strip, dining and fresh markets, cultural interaction spaces with museum space as well as the possibility of introducing an art district. The importance of urban open space, housing and commerce was also brought to light. Specifically, we have discussed incorporating green space to create value and retrofit the old downtown, as well as the current highway and street layout. For this competition I worked with Courtland Eddings.

Phase 1 Reestablishing Urban Links As we analyzed the problems of the city and the solutions that we can provide, we decided to divide the master plan into a three phase plan. The first phase will consist of transforming Jefferson Avenue into a major shopping strip. The city itself is in a high need of pedestrian activity. By having a strip of stores and restaurants by the entrance of the site, it will start creating a catalyst and funnel the activity into the site. Another major change is converting the ten lane highway into a four lane avenue. By doing this is will reduce the incoming vehicle traffic and invite more pedestrian flow into the site.

Phase 2 Waterfront Expansion Phase 2 involves the development of the site. As showed on the master plan, we decided to provide a large amount of green space to the public. We also included different outdoors activities through out the site to get people involved. They include a boat club, open fields for outdoor sports, water feature for water activities and ice skating, and art installation. Also there are restaurants, cafes, and museums. On the other side of the site we included apartment complexes which is something the city lacks on.

Master Plan

Phase 3 Reintroducing the Highway One of the biggest problems we noticed with the site is the massive ten lane highway that cuts through the city right in front of the site. Having highway 10 in front of the site discourages pedestrian traffic to access the site. We further analyzed the highway activity and noticed the amount of cars traveling daily is very low compared to major highways in the nation. As a result, in phase one we transformed the highway into a avenue and converted into a shopping strip. Phase three is reintroducing the highway back to the city. In fifty years, we are hopping that if the city gains a lot of activity, then there will be a need for a highway. If so we are proposing to move the highway underground so it wont interrupt the pedestrian flow of the city.

Dinnerware PRODUCT DESIGN

furniture design 708 The concept behind Dinnerware is transforming everyday dinning ware into a decorative element. The idea is to stack up the different type of plates until it transforms into a vase. It consist of two sets of plates, bowls, deep bowls, and cups. People not only can use this as a decorative feature, but at the same time they can share a meal with a guest and stack them up again when done.
