CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE OX! Lunar New Year is on 12 February this year, and while we might not be able to celebrate in our usual fashion, there's lots of goodies at the library and online!
START WITH A LION DANCE... Lion dancing is an exciting part of seeing in the New Year. Discover what happens behind the scenes with the Ken Seng Keng Lion and Dragon Dance Association as they prepare for celebrations in this video linked here. Investigative journalists R.AGE follow top lion dancers in Malaysia as they prepare for the Lunar New Year. NEW BOOKS AND DVDS IN CHINESE AND VIETNAMESE Footscray and Braybrook Libraries will have new books and DVDs in Vietnamese and Chinese on display ready for borrowing during the week of Lunar New Year (6-12 February). LUNAR NEW YEAR FOODS GALORE! What Lunar New Year is complete without food! Many Asian countries celebrate with their own specialties, some foods only make an appearance around this time of year and have special meaning and symbolism.
Did you know fish can have different meanings during Lunar New Year? The same can be said about dumplings, ricecakes, noodles, and other foods. Fercility from China Highlights has compiled a list of seven lucky foods to eat and their symbolism on their website here. The Wild Tussah Blog has a great break down of special Vietnamese sweets called 'Mứt Tết', a combination of colourful candies, roasted seeds, pickles and candied fruits made especially for family and visitors, click here to check it out.
