NOT MY CIRCUS!

THE DUSTY MILLERS

Opening Night 14 June | 5–6pm Footscray Train Station Hopkins St & Irving St, Footscray

Opening Night 14 June | 7–7.30pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray Second Performance 23 June | 4–4.30pm Chip’s Loft 116a Hopkins St, Footscray

Not My Circus! are an exciting new trio bringing high energy, dance fuelled jams to the streets of Melbourne. Influenced by New York subway sensations Too Many Zooz, the Not My Circus! crew have quickly become a busking sensation all around the city and are in high demand for all kinds of events and festivals across Australia.

The Dusty Millers is a collaboration of three intimately connected voices: cherished singer-songwriter Lisa Miller, soul jazz queen Tracey Miller, and upand-coming star Loretta Miller. alice skye Opening Night 14 June | 7.50–8.30pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray

#westset

Alice Skye is a singer-songwriter, Wergaia woman and universal little sister. Growing up aside the Grampians with no shortage of inspiration - music was unavoidable. Alice’s songs sparkle with a sensitivity and maturity well beyond her years. Influenced by Missy Higgins, The Cranberries and Regina Spektor, Alice’s voice is described as a combination of hopeful and haunting, naturally sweet, slow and dreamlike.

5

ziggy ramo Opening Night 14 June | 8.50–10pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray

festivalcity.com.au

To say Ziggy’s voice is an important one in the Australian music scene would be a gross understatement. At a time when artists like AB Original are (quite rightly) swinging sledgehammers in their efforts to expose Indigenous issues in this country, Ziggy is right there beside them with a cut throat razor, sharp and on fire, slicing deep into the heart of race relations in modern Australia.

DONALD’S HOUSE

SUGAR FED LEOPARDS

Opening Night 14 June | 10.30pm–1am Pride of our Footscray 1/86-88 Hopkins St, Footscray

15 June | 8.30–9.30pm The Commercial Hotel 238 Whitehall St, Yarraville

Hailing from Brunswick, James and Peter Isaacs are the brotherly duo Donald’s House. Taking influence from Paradise Garage styled disco, early 90s house, italo and anything with a DMX drum kit, their take on dance music is as refreshing as it is familiar. You’ll often hear M1 solos, chords and stabs, juxtaposed against Phil Collins styled stadium drums, and groovy basslines that just beg your body to move.

Sugar Fed Leopards (SFL) are a blazing septet conceived at the swooning nexus of classic pop and disco. With smoking hot costumes, sweet harmonies, tight dance routines and a cranking rhythm section, SFL have been breaking hearts and starting dance floor fires for five years.

CULTE

RUBY JONES

15 June | 8–8.30pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray

15 June | 8.50–9.30pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray

Culte began as a solo bedroom project by Yura Iwama in 2015, creating lo-fi songs with limited equipment and knowledge about recording. Upon leaving high school, Culte flourished into a full band and has developed as a dream pop outfit. Culte can be described as simple song writing dedicated to the myriad of emotions and experiences of a young person entering adulthood - heartbreak, anxieties, friendship, money, existential crises, and so on.

Jones’ tempestuous brand of bliss is uniquely her own. She combines searing vocals and a traditional rock instrumentation with the kind of washed out, psychedeliasteeped sonic palette that pulls the heat from your fingertips.

spike f**k 15 June | 10–11pm The Line 2 Yewers St, Footscray

#westset

Spike F**k is inspired primarily by love and obsession, addiction, sexual disorientation, Catholic guilt and washed up 60s musicians who make overproduced comeback albums. Spike F**k describes her music and attitude as a whole (for the sake of classification and utility) as “smackwave”–a blend of late 80s new wave and late 70s post-punk, with a dash of country music/ singer-songwriter sensibilities delivered in Las Vegas ballroom karaoke vocal style. 9

GORDON KOANG

AUSECUMA BEATS

15 June | 8.30–9.30pm Jambo Bar & Cafe 195 Barkly St, Footscray

16 June | 6–7pm Africa Town 161 Nicholson St, Footscray

Gordon Koang Duoth is a Neur speaker and musician hailing from the Upper Nile region of what is now South Sudan. Accompanied by his cousin Paul Biel, Gordon performs a blend of traditional Neur rhythms and original compositions in English, Arabic, and his native language, Neur.

Ausecuma Beats formed as a combination of musicians from Australia, the Senegambia region, Cuba, and Mali... And hence the name Ausecuma, combining the four regions into one word. As a band they stand for unity among diverse peoples, and it shows through their combined influences. Their sound creates a complex rhythm that is unmistakably unique and virtually forces your body to move! Presented in association with Emerge in the West Festival.

ALLARA BRIGGS PATTISON

TRACY MCNEIL

18 June | 6–6.45pm Pride of our Footscray 1/86-88 Hopkins St, Footscray

18 June | 7–7.50pm Pride of our Footscray 1/86-88 Hopkins St, Footscray

Lose yourself in a swirl of sound as one woman creates a sweet tangle of electric bass, double bass and looped tones. Allara’s emotive compositions resonate with dark frequencies and soaring melodies. With smooth earthy vocals this collision of hip hop, neo soul, blues, and reggae is an empowering thematic exploration of culture, spirituality, and the environment.

Tracy McNeil delivers a shimmering style of Indie Americana, coasting a musical landscape between her Canadian roots and the heart and grit of Australia’s alt-country scene. With new material continuing to draw from classic rock, pop and alt country influences, she’s simultaneously broadening her sonic palette.

FREYA JOSEPHINE HOLLICK 18 June | 8.15–9pm Pride of our Footscray 1/86-88 Hopkins St, Footscray In recent years Freya Josephine Hollick has been a name claiming special attention for her impressive singing and writing. Raised on everything from jazz to soul to Sonic Youth, Hollick relishes in blending wild Thurston-esque distortions, Latin beats and orchestration with heavily spun poetry and vocals.

THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS 18 June | 7.30–9.30pm Sloth Bar 202 Barkly St, Footscray Hailing from the north from distinctively diverse yet complimentary musical families, The Montgomery Brothers now reside in Melbourne delivering their sound to the music capital of Australia in mesmerising shows. The fiercely talented three piece generates moments of Latin-jazz, blues, soul, and rock ’n’ roll in transfixing live performances.

FOOTSCRAY GYPSIES 18 June | 7–7.50pm Footscray Hotel 48 Hopkins St, Footscray Footscray Gypsies is a community orchestra based in Footscray. Focusing on klezmer, gypsy and Balkan music, the band enjoy crossing geographical boundaries to bring a sense of community to their audience. The Footscray Gypsies like people dancing to their music so don’t be surprised if some of the band invades the audience and brings you to your feet.

festivalcity.com.au

DARCY MCNULTY AND HIS SALTY BOYS 19 June | 6–9pm Small French Bar 3/154 Barkly St, Footscray Darcy McNulty and his Salty Boys play jazz. They didn’t grow up going to church in Harlem or New Orleans, they grew up in Melbourne. But they did learn some tunes like St Louie Blues and Polka Dots and Moonbeams and have been looking for the good sounds in them. Darcy has played music in many places and bands in this city but always comes back to the music he loves and the songs played by the giants of his instrument.

HACHIKU

CODA CHROMA

20 June | 8–9pm Littlefoot Bar 223 Barkly St, Footscray

20 June | 8.30–9.30pm The Night Heron 228 Nicholson St, Footscray

Hachiku is the brainchild of bedroom-producer Anika Ostendorf. Born in Detroit but raised in Germany, Anika is what can be best described as a “global artist“, writing and producing her home-made dream pop (think: Grimes, Perfume Genius and early CocoRosie) from whichever bedroom she is currently inhabiting.

Coda Chroma is the alias of prolific Melbourne-based artist Kate Lucas, and is a vehicle for her preoccupation with writing songs. Coda Chroma’s songs are drawn from personal dreamscapes and real life encounters, delivering poetic honesty, with a nostalgia for the unknown.

FRANCO COZZO 20 June | 8–9pm Kindred Studios 3 Harris St, Yarraville Franco Cozzo is a five piece band from the heart of Melbourne’s inner western suburbs, Footscray. The lads–Alex, Sam, Archie and Reuben–got their first taste of the music scene in early 2015 with a study tour in Sweden. Maseta Pratama joined the band soon after on bass and they established the indie rock sound they have today, taking influence from music greats like Radiohead and Block Party.

AMAYA LAUCIRICA

CHITRA

20 June | 9–10pm Littlefoot Bar 223 Barkly St, Footscray

21 June | 8–9pm Littlefoot Bar 223 Barkly St, Footscray

Amaya’s work blends swirling contours with wistful melodies and lush, sonic depth. Within this rich palette of sound resides Amaya’s uniquely captivating voice, restrained yet beautiful, with rich breathy tones offering touching moments of yearning and lament. Amaya is a seasoned live performer, having undertaken several national tours.

Chitra is a genre bending songwriter, much like her creative influences Alabama Shakes and Angel Olsen, who seamlessly weave the blunt force of rock ‘n’ roll with the candid story telling of country and soul.

festivalcity.com.au

Growing up amongst “the rich” music scene of the Bellarine Peninsula, Chitra immersed herself in sounds both local and global, quickly developing a passion for song writing as a way of channelling emotion and experience.

DANIEL ELIA

P-UNIQUE

21 June | 8.30–9.30pm Chip’s Loft 116a Hopkins St, Footscray

21 June | 10–10.30pm Chip’s Loft 116a Hopkins St, Footscray

Producing music with a strong political and spiritual message, Daniel Elia encapsulates the trials and tribulations faced by the Melbourne South-Sudanese community, and what it means to be black in Australia. With an extensive background in dancing and touring, Elia draws inspiration from contemporaries such as J Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Big Sean.

Sudanese-Australian artist P-UniQue is on the way up! Her music is raw, unique, genuine and heavily shaped by strong personal experience. Her words flow with relentless speed and sharp lyricism, floating across futuristic bass-heavy beats and rippling hi-hats. She writes from the heart and speaks her mind, expressing her perspectives confidently via spoken word and hip-hop.

Anna Cordell’s rich folk music straddles that place between light and dark where true human emotion exists. Her penchant for the minor key, intricate nylon and electric guitar playing, and haunting yet uplifting voice, make for an enthralling performance.

Melbourne artist Hannah Cameron and Canadian-born Sydney musician Brian Campeau have joined musical forces to create Brain Romance. Together they are an exquisite synergy of guitars, harmonies and impeccably fine composition, along with off-kilter song writing and progressive indie tropes.

22 June | 9–9.45pm Chip’s Loft 116a Hopkins St, Footscray

Executing pop music is no mean feat, but new kids on the block, Peachnoise, have already pricked up ears with their innovative and exciting songwriting. Eccentric two-piece Peachnoise was founded in the deep, dark, smarmy depths of Melbourne, in an unforgiving riptide of guitar pedals and musical whatsits.

Hemm are in a state of flux, redefining their sound palette and artistic vision, learning, growing and changing as artists. Their unique brand of minimal ambient pop blends folk-style melodies and lyrics with intricate and considered electronic production. Slow, soft ambient textures evolve to become hard hitting club doompers. Every genre, all at once.
