Ormoc Doctors’ Hospital opens its portal for OSMS visit July 27, 2015 – OSMS pupils turned an ordinary Monday to a busy yet fun-filled affair for Ormoc Doctors’ Hospital, as administrators and staff welcomed the kids for a Hospital Tour. In the pursuit of providing a concrete experience to our pupils on the key functions and areas in a hospital as well as on the different health workers in our community, OSMS conducted an educational tour in partnership with Ormoc Doctors’ Hospital Nursing Services Department, spearheaded by Chief Nurse Arianne A. Enecio ( cont. page 5)

Part of the school’s mission is to: Fervently empower the learners’ God-given gifts and nourish lifelong skills to achieve optimum development, enabling them to become proactive members of the society. Educational tour provides students an opportunity to observe many things that are not available in school. It also creates closer bond among classmates while experiencing new environment away from school. OSMS Parents Contend in Cook Off,..(page 1) Each grade level from Playgroup to Grade Four was represented by one team composed of three individuals, a combination of parents and guardians of bona fide OSMS learners. The central tasks of the competition was for the teams to come up with a nutritious recipe, prepare the dish on-the-spot for an hour, and finally, to win the hearts and taste buds of the adjudicators. Tastefulness was the number one consideration since it covered 50% of the criteria; 30% went for the ingredients used; 20% was allocated for the creativity of presentation. The catch was that key members of the Board of Adjudicators were the OSMS pupils themselves – one pupil from every grade level, all of which were those whose parents or guardians were not official contestants to the Cook Off. Other members included Mrs. Rowena Ang, school administrator and Dr. Delsergs Abit, guest speaker and visiting physician who also conducted a medical checkup for all pupils. The Playgroup team served utan-bisaya, Kindergarten I prepared French Toast, Kindergarten II had a unique bolabola recipe made from mashed squash and cheese, Grade 1 did their version of Bread Rolls, Grade 2 served , grade 3 made Chicken Kiev with Rice, while Grade 4 came up with Vegetable Tempura. Among all delectable dishes, the Grade 4 parents’ version of vegetable tempura emerged to be the most tasteful, healthy, and creative as it bagged the first place, followed by the KI parents’ French toast at second place. The winners, namely Mrs. Lourdes R. Lucero, Mrs. Aileen S. Aviles, and Mrs. Pearl O. Latoza, were recognized and awarded during the Culminating Activity held on July 31 at the OSMS Multi-Purpose Hall.

Ormoc Doctors’ Hospital Opens….( continuation) The pupils were divided into two batches: one in the morning, another in the afternoon. Both of which had a very informative tour on the different areas in the hospital including the laboratory, doctor’s office, emergency room, delivery room, operating room, and the nursery. The kids also got a first-hand encounter with hospital apparatus and machines such as Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan, Xray, Ultrasound, and Electrocardiogram (ECG) facilities. Friendly nurses enthusiastically accommodated their visitors in the nurse’s station which they particularly prepared for the visit. A roleplay of a confined patient’s scenario was also done by the staff in one of the hospital’s suite rooms, with one of them acting as an ill patient.

The tour was wrapped up with a brief talk delivered by representatives of the different hospital departments, highlighting on their vital roles as health care providers – from the hospital’s resident physician, to ate Beverly, the head of housekeeping department – all were very generous in imparting their skills and experiences to the OSMS learners.

Kids-turned-entrepreneurs in OSMS Kiddie Food Fair July 24, 2015 – Pupils engage in a healthy competition, both literally and figuratively, in a food preparation and selling activity organized in line with the Nutrition Month and at the same time Savings Awareness Week. The newly-installed OSMS Covered Court transformed into a festive fair as pupils from all grade levels excitedly put up their food stalls. Prior to the food selling, pupils grouped themselves by grade level and simultaneously prepared a variety of healthy snacks with the guidance of their grade level advisers. After which, everyone proudly displayed the products of their hardwork in their food stalls. The school gates were opened for parents and some outsiders who came over to support the Kiddie Food Fair. Nutritious treats sold in the food fair were as follows: Kindergarten I – Graham Munchkins @ Php5.00 each Kindergarten II – Lemonade @ Php5.00 per cup Grade 1 – Tuna Sandwich @ Php10.00 each Grade 2 – Ham Sandwich @ Php3.00 Grade 3 – Hotdogs-on-Sticks @ Php6.00 per stick Grade 4 – Fruity Jell-O @ Php10.00 per cup As for the proceeds, the total sales were divided equally among the kiddie entrepreneurs for every grade level. The amount each of them received served as the starting amount for their coin bank project. Pupils created their own coin banks using recycled materials as their unified Math project done a week before the food-selling activity. The said project is set to be a year-long endeavor and the kids will be encouraged to continue dropping a spare of their money into their coin banks.
