Celebrating Academic Achievement, Leadership and Service to the Community

1

All-Arizona Academic Team for Community Colleges Recognition Ceremony This ceremony celebrates the outstanding academic achievements and distinguished leadership of students enrolled in Arizona’s community colleges. Phi Theta Kappa, American Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Community Colleges, Arizona Board of Regents and USA TODAY help these exceptional students reach their educational goals by awarding of scholarships and issuing tuition waivers to any of Arizona’s three Universities: Arizona State University, University of Arizona or Northern Arizona University. Process Each college may send two student nominations per campus to the International Phi Theta Kappa organization for judging. This year we honor seventy-four students who were evaluated on academic performance and service to the college and community. Criteria for selection: • GPA of 3.50 or higher (4.0 scale) • Good academic standing and working toward an associate degree • Involvement in campus or community volunteerism Judging consists of three rounds. First-round judges consist of business, civic, education, and government leaders. The second and third rounds are held in Washington, D.C. and the judges are representatives of various federal agencies and national education associations. Scores from the national competition are used to rank the students for the state team. First team members will receive a $1,000 scholarship, second team members a $750 scholarship, and third team members a $500 scholarship. National Recognition Twenty students will be named to the All-USA Community College Academic Team. All-USA Team members are the nation’s top community college students. They will be featured in a spring global edition of USA TODAY, receive $2,500 in stipends, a medallion, obelisk and certificate. These recognitions are presented to students at a ceremony held at the American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention. In addition, the Coca-Cola Foundation, along with the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation recognizes the New Century Scholar. Fifty students will be named Gold Scholars, receiving $1,500, fifty students will be named Silver Scholars, receiving $1,250, and fifty students will be named Bronze Scholars, receiving $1,000. A state may have multiple Gold, Silver, or Bronze Scholars. All scholars will also receive special medallions. The top scoring student in each of the fifty states will be named a New Century Scholar and will receive a $2,000 stipend. New Century Scholars will also be presented at the AACC Convention.
