Healthcare in Greater Phoenix
For Job Seekers

The healthcare workforce delivers care to patients and families. Healthcare employees work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, medical labs and in the community. It is one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing industries; demand for jobs in healthcare is expected to increase as the number of Americans 65 years and older grows. Experts say over half of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. in the next 10 years are in healthcare or healthcare related fields.
Trends in Healthcare: Cost Pressures In the coming years rising prices are expected to shift demand for healthcare services away from higher-cost hospitals and long-term care facilities to lower-cost healthcare providers, home healthcare services, and community-based clinics.
Healthcare Information Technology (IT) The move towards electronic health records is an ongoing trend in the healthcare industry. Electronic records would allow doctors to view a patient’s entire medical history, and offers the promise of improved diagnosis, increased safety, and reduced costs. The expansion of healthcare IT is also evident in the growing popularity of telehealth services, or the delivery of health-related services over the Internet or other forms of telecommunications.
Personalized Medicine Personalized medicine is the customization of healthcare services. Today, advancements in genetics allow doctors to create customized tests, targeted therapies, and tailor-made drugs based on a patient’s genetic profile.
Medical Tourism Medical tourism is defined as a patient receiving healthcare services outside of their home city, state, or nation. Quality of care and cost are motivating factors. With affordable costs and world-class facilities including the Mayo Clinic, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Barrow Neurological Institute, and the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, Greater Phoenix is considered a destination location for medical tourism.
Affordable Care Act The passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 represents the most significant restructuring of healthcare in the U.S. in 50 years. The Act promises to lower costs, boost good patient outcomes, and expand health coverage to millions of additional Americans. With more people insured, demand for healthcare services will increase leading to more jobs.
