david moinard Tu as été le premier à avoir exposé Huang Yong Ping en dehors de Chine. C’était à Paris, au Centre Pompidou et dans la Grande Halle de la Villette, en 1989. Restée gravée dans la mémoire comme rarement exposition l’aura été, on célèbre cette année les vingt-cinq ans de « Magiciens de la terre ». À l’aune d’un travail aussi scrutateur du monde qu’est celui de Huang Yong Ping, je souhaitais solliciter ton regard sur ce quart de siècle passé et, pourquoi pas, sur celui qui vient ! Une vision rétrospective et prospective sur l’art, sur l’artiste et sur le monde dans lequel il a évolué au cours de cette période. Tout d’abord, j’aimerais que tu te souviennes pour nous de ta première
rencontre avec Huang Yong Ping, pourrais-tu raconter dans quel cadre ça s’est déroulé et de quelle manière tu as découvert son œuvre ?
jean-hubert martin À force de raconter les choses, on reconstruit un peu les souvenirs. (Rires) J’ai rencontré Huang Yong Ping en 1987, chez lui à Xiamen. Je faisais une tournée avec Fei Dawei pour aller voir de jeunes artistes plus ou moins en rupture avec le régime. Tous bouillonnaient d’impatience de s’exprimer, à cause de la chape d’autorité politique qui

david moinard You were the first to show Huang Yong Ping’s work outside of China. It was in Paris, at the Pompidou Center and in the Grande Halle de la Villette, in 1989. It left a profound mark on its visitors, as only rare exhibitions can. This year we are celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of “Magiciens de la Terre” [Magicians of the Earth]. Considering a body of work that scrutinises the world as thoroughly as that of Huang Yong Ping, I wanted to hear your take on this past quarter-century and, while we’re about it, the next one! So, a retrospective and prospective vision of art and of the artist
and the world he has been experiencing during this period. First of all, I would like you to remind us of your first meeting with Huang Yong Ping: could you tell us in what context that took place and how you discovered his work?
