FOREWORD
Building data machines This project started in october last year, but the will was there earlier, first in 2014 when I attended to WUD Berlin and assist to a talk given by Aral Balkan «Beyond the Camera Panopticon», the progress of this idea led me to Data Machina. BUT FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO THANK AT THIS POINT ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SUPPORTED AND MOTIVATED ME DURING MY PROJECT: Thanks to my two examinators : Professor Mirjam Göller and Professor Cyrus Khazaeli who have always given me valuable feedbacks and new ideas during my researches. A special thanks to Clive K. Lavery, who brought me back again and again on the right path. Also thank you to Maria Kolitsch who accepted to illustrate the role of Lucy, the Personas for this project and by so made Data Machina much more tangible. I would like to thank all my friends that have given me over the many months repeatedly valuable feedback, motivation and fresh impulse. And finally deserve my family a special thanks for their patience and supports in all my projects.

« DESIGN AS AN ACT OF CHOOSING WHAT TO CREATE AND WHAT NOT TO CREATE »
(1) How designers destroyed the world by Mike Monteiro at UXLX conference (2014)
SYNOPSYS
In «Überwachung und Kontrolle», edited by zfm Zeitschrift für Medienwissenschaft, the media community identify the need to redefine the terms and their vision of media after the revealations of edward snowden. The relationship between ethics and design has always been evolving, today, many design studios developing smart objects such as The incredible Machine, or ind.ie, are also developing, beside, their own IoT Manifesto, a red line to guide them when manipulating data.
Data Machina Data Machina IS
AN OPEN-SOURCE WEB PLATFORM THAT ALLOWS DESIGNERS TO UNDERSTAND AND CREATE MEANINGFUL SMART THINGS.
Data Machina, THE VISION BEHIND THIS PLATFORM IS A FUTURE OF DESIGN THAT SOLVES REAL NEEDS THROUGH THE USE OF SMART TECHNOLOGY AND EMPOWERS HUMANS IN THE LONG TERM.
All of those initiatives motivated me in bringing Data Machina to life.
Data Machina acts as a companion for designers and their work with smart materials which helps them discover, use and contribute to the building of smart technology by making it more tangible and less utopian. It communicates the «always in-formation», endless becoming aspect of smart materials and how it affects the very nature of physical objects.
Motivations
(2) What if your radio could make you sense connectedness to a country
THE TOPIC OF BIG DATA AND THE PROCESS OF DATA GATHERING STARTED TO INTEREST ME AFTER ATTEMPTING TO ARAL BALKAN’S TALK ABOUT PRIVACY, CALLED « THE CAMERA PANOPTICON », IN BERLIN, 2014. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN VISITING MORE DESIGN CONFERENCES, AND MADE LOTS OF RESEARCH AND EVEN IF RELEVANT CONTENT EXIST, IT ISN’T MADE MADE EASY TO FIND, AND WHEN I FOUND SOME, STILL IT WAS VERY TECHNICAL, OR PHILOSOPHICAL CONTENT AND SO IT WAS NOT SO EASY FOR ME, AS A DESIGNER, TO IDENTIFY MYSELF AS PART OF THIS MECHANIC.
where you used to live? by The Incredible Machine (2015)
Goals HELPING DESIGNERS BUILDING SMART MEANINGFUL THINGS, HAVING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE «DATA» TOPIC AND SO GAIN C O N F I D E N C E (2). Goal is that in 5 years from now, designers that are willing to get into the topic can found more easily relevant content, in a language that they understand and that will make them feel part of the dynamic.
Mike Monteiro gave a talk at UXLX conference (2014) (1), « How designers destroyed the world » and this is for sure a very motivating source. He is a designer, adressing designers using the same language and by so create confidence.
Goal is to move beyond Foucault’s or Deleuze controlled society to a distributed model. 7

the act of collecting data about an individual / object. So we can say that surveillance is the act of recording information, allowing the proper functioning of society. Secondly, this has resulted by the direct monitoring of subordinates beyond the prison settings by the growth of bureaucratic administrations, defense and security but also in workplaces, what we could call management in the twentieth century.
But data itself can’t be enough! The essence of what we call ‘big data‘ takes its source in a socio-technical nature and is as described in the data-gathering-protocol, endless becoming. Data is by nature ‘information‘. And so capturing it from its context means altering it, making it less true. Thus we see the birth of the ‘dividual matter‘, designates the individual in form of datas.
PA RT I — F R O M F O U CAU LT ’ S D I S C I P L I N A R Y M AC H I N E TO D E L E U Z E ’ S CO N T R O L L E D S O C I E TY.
Collecting data to organize a society living. THE TRANSITION FROM FOUCAULT’S DISCIPLINARY MACHINE (1) TO DELEUZE’S CONTROLLED SOCIETY (2) MARK ABOVE ALL ELSE THE SEARCH FOR BUILDING A STRUCTURE, ENABLING LIFE IN SOCIETY. THIS LATTER INSINUATES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PRODUCTIVE SYSTEM TO ORGANIZE COMMUNITY LIVING.
THE ALGORITHM DOES NOT REMAIN THE DATAS IN THEIR TRUTH, BUT IT DISTORTS THEM IN THE SHORT TERM, EXPLOITS THEM BASED ON THEIR OUTPUT POTENTIAL FOR THAT INSTANT. IN ORDER TO INTERPRET DATA, ARTIFACTS OF REALITY, WE HAVE TO ENGAGE IN A DISTANCIATION PROCESS FROM THE TRUTH, ALLOWING THEIR ASSEMBLY TO FORM SIMULATIONS, KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY REMAIN ONLY ANTICIPATIONS.
Foucault’s disciplinary machine is an utopian representation of modern societies. The individual is seen as an object of study involved in the collective effort to strengthen the efficiency of the society. It is embodied structures of time, space, the human body then subconsciously obey to a schedule. The collection of information in the discipline plays a vital role. To surveil is
9

certain goals. Then information which we exchange, which Lyotard calls the „language“ becomes a product. The legitimacy of this knowledge is then overridden by the criterion of information’s operativity. What is creating value becomes now true and just, as seen in the illustration of information’s production, truth and reality are two things made different by the criterion of operativity.
And so knowledge became information TODAY, INFORMATION CAN BE STORED, RETRIEVED, BOUGHT AND SOLD. IN ORDER TO ACCESS OR BUY THIS INFORMATION. LYOTARD RAISES THE QUESTION OF THE SEEK OF SUCH AN ORGANIC WHOLE, ECHOING THE NATURE OF DATA AND DECLARE : « KNOWLEDGE IS NOW PRODUCED TO BE SOLD ».
Utopia vs. Dystopia GEORGE ORWELL ILLUSTRATES THIS THOUGHT PROCESS THAT HE CALLS: „DOUBLE THINK“ IN 1984, A FICTIVE NOVEL BASED ON THE FANTASY OF A UTOPIAN/DYSTOPIAN FUTURE IN WHICH INFORMATION IS REMOVED FROM ITS TRUTH AND IS ONLY INTENDED TO BE USED IN THE PRESENT MOMENT, EXTREMELY D E F O R M A B LE .
The nature of the collected data has an infuence on, not solely (in)dividual beings but also has repercussions on our relationship to knowledge, and what «makes» knowledge. Thus the question is no longer whether the extent to which it (knowledge) is true but how it can be used effectively in order to achieve certain ends.
This was a fictionnal novel, yet, designers tend to get stuck in this utopian / dystopian vision of a smart future. Most of the solutions provided by the design industry implementing big data seem to answer a utopian ideal to some, for others dystopian, not very often in between.
Data has become power
What interests me here will not be the collection of these two extreme visions of the Internet of Things, but rather to understand why an inbetween doesn’t exist. The role of the designer in the equation gives the impression of something that can not be controlled and therefore is doomed to correspond to an extreme. We can detect here that the challenge for the designer is therefore not to «change the course» toward a utopian future idealized rather than letting the soft machine to a dystopian nightmare.
And so informations will be evaluated depending on their market value, not according to their “truth” but their potential of exploitation. What Lyotard describes, is a system where false information by which it would make possible to produce (wealth) is preferable than indecipherable authentic information. Stored in the databases, those informations belongs then to the companies that archive them. When we no longer wonder if the information is true or false, but how can we use it to achieve

Need to redefine the terms — data as a medium Not only in media theory, communication practitioners, from them as design tend to redefine the practice of a design now aware of those implications. First on a theoretical level, it appears important to re-define terms, allowing us to have a better understanding of our digital Humanity, incorporating this element of unpredictability, free will in our conception of this invisible layer that is called interaction.

their alteration and their persistence. Commonly, smart technology devices and services rise to fear and scepticism. Indeed, According to a survey, 92% of the public expressed concerns about the informations collected by devices (1). (1) (2013), conducted by ISACA (formerly the information System Audit and Control Association)
Distributed technology as the natural path to take. Open-source projects already allow a public of tech-enthusiasts to experience the networked society, yet, the poor user experience for a nonexpert turn inaccessible these promising tools.
Integrate ethics! THE NEXT STEP IS TO CONCEPTUALIZE A MODEL WHERE TECHNOLOGY BECOMES A COMPANION TO THIS DIGITAL HUMANITY AND NOT A COMPETITOR. THE DESIGNER HERE HAS THE ROLE OF A DOOR-KEEPER AS EMPHASIZED BY MIKE MONTEIRO, BECAUSE IN FACT, DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE DATA MACHINES, THE DESIGNER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS CREATIONS, WHICH REQUIRES HIS APPROVAL.
TO THINK THE DISTRIBUTED TECHNOLOGY AS THE NATURAL WAY TO WORK WITH SMART MATERIALS. COMMONS-BASED PEER VIRTUE
The shift to digitalization of a part of our humanity must not be at the cost of the deeply organic nature of the human kind. The challenges relates around the identfication of data, its de-identfication, re-identfication, in all,
12
Reframe the designer role Last component in the design of such machines is data put into practice, intended to not only amplify the things around us but thinking as an experience, enabling a networked society, including our share of digital lives without that this means denying the properties of the physical world, a digital companion.
13
BACHELOR — RESEARCHES
Big data? Although it might seems easy to overlook the impact of technology and data science on our society framework, it has signfically amplfied transportation or communication and by so allowed progress in many fields, making no distinction for medical sciences, biological sciences and agriculture. Yet it also had a huge impact on how we act and interact with what surrounds us. To reframe the role of the designer into the 21st century is a primary issue, the creative industry will have to get to grips with data gathering machines.
14
invest more and more in the reserach phase and proof all the possible use cases. The startup he rejected had the great project to rend possible the detection of physical coordination issues by a simple exercise on a tablet, the risk of this exercise to be unconsciously conducted, hidden behind a undetectable filling form for example was to high.
NEXT 2015 I attended this conference in Hamburg in 2015, and this has a little more confirmed the need that the designershave to share their research and findings in the field of smart objects. Visiting an «apartimentum», intelligent flat where the door opens not with a key but is able to tell who is at home, or if there is anyone, This has lead me to ask a lot of questions, what will happen if the iOS door is not up-to-date? do my apartment can lock myself? NEXT also made me discover the IoT Manifesto from The Incredible Machine and showed that some designers do not wait any signal to start wondering where ethics meets design.

This exercise was followed by a short session where each group had to pitch his project. It was interesting because when faced with other’s designers, some aspects seemed fundamentally contradictory with some basic product design principles, making designers using big data was no longer the domain of rigorous or feasible design.

During the Bachelor Entwicklung class, I had the opportunity to test a group of fifteen BTK students (communication design) on their approach to the development of a smart object. Each group receives the same exercise with different orientations to ensure diversity in the results.

The story behind: THESE FIRST SKETCHES ADDRESSES ALL THE SAME STORY FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEWS MORE OR LESS PRONOUNCED. This is to transcribe what we have seen so far in visual form, for that, I recovered a style that is similar to that of «mental models» as a live-captured thought. The story told by this logo is the following: The data, previously trapped in a system cadrillage take the first step to get out. The cadrillage is always present, recalling that the process is not yet completed. Vision: In 5 years, if Data Machina and other initiatives raised enough awareness and ammene to a change in our use of data, then the grid will no longer be necessary in the logo. This logo is an indicator of the state of working with smart materials today, opening up new possibilities.

Invision INVISION M’A PERMIS DE RÉALISER UN PROTOTYPE CLICABLE DONNANT UNE PREMIÈRE IMPRESSION DU SITE WEB. IL PERMET AUSSI D’ACCÉDER AUX DIFFÉRENTES VERSIONS ET AINSI VOIR LA PROGRESSION DU PROJET.
J’AI UTILISÉ SKETCH POUR LA RÉALIATION DES PREMIÈRES ESQUISSES DU LOGO ET LE LAYOUT DU WEBTOOL. LA FONCTION «MIROR» M’A PERMIS DES DESIGN ET DE VOIR EN TEMPS RÉEL SUR LE SUPPORT FINAL, DESKTOP, TABLET AND SMARTPHONE.
