6 Placeless : Learning From Monopoly Thesis Abstract

Atlantic City, New Jersey Master of Architecture Thesis, 2014 The existence of tourist destination cities proves our impulsive desire to break the monotonous everyday routine and exist in a fantastical place of consumption. The identity of Atlantic City, New Jersey is that of escapism and pleasure, it is a place rooted in the American psyche. Yet, today this casino resort city does not flourish as it once did. The juxtaposition of the glitzy veneer in the tourist district and the decaying lots splattered throughout is symptomatic of the developers’ myopic city. The escapist quality of casino architecture is revealed as nothing but a thin veneer, which this project exposes as hollow. This thesis challenges the typical role of the architect as a pawn in the developers’ tool chest and critiques the way that economics, politics and consumerism have come to dominate our notion of place. The real estate value of the abandoned plots becomes a metaphor for the perspective of the developer, resembling Monopoly properties within the greater board game. In response, this project proposes anti-architecture on the blighted lots as a commentary on society’s infatuation with money, recognition and material possessions. These interventions construct a dialogue between the real and hyper real, cause and effect, money and practicality, developer and local resident of Atlantic City.
